  my sons...bottomless pitt
« on: July 17, 2007, 12:30:20 AM » by herbmama
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, please move it if this is just for nursing moms, but this is a diet question for children.

I have 2 sons (10 & Cool and 1 daughter (5).  My sons are always hungry, always.  They could out-eat me any day of the week.  At first I thought maybe it was just psychological, but my 8 year old will cry at a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich for lunch.  I will ask him why he is crying and he will say "mom, it's just not enough food".  He's really hungry.

I tool them to the DR. and told her what was going on and they will "burp-up" their food.  She said they burp-up because they are eating too much.  They needed more protein, we started counting every gram of protein, and they are getting way enough.

Any suggestions?

Truly grateful for any help,
Jen

Being a bottomless pit & frequent burping can both be caused by food allergies. The book Unraveling the Mysteries of Autism would probably help. Don't let the title scare you - it has A LOT of info about allergies in it. Also Is This Your Child? by Dr Doris Rapp & any of her other books. Another good book is: An alternative approach to allergies : the new field of clinical ecology unravels the environmental causes of mental and physical ills  By Theron G. Randolph and Ralph W. Moss. It is a doozy title but it is an EXCELLENT book & is understandable.

Another thing that can cause bottomless pit is low blood sugar & the blood sugar swings & worn down adrenal glands that go with it. Also leaky gut, yeast & fungus can all cause bottomless pits as well. Allergies, leaky gut, yeast/fungus, worn down adrenal glands & low blood sugar all tend to go together & set each other off anyway. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

You're counting their proteins.  How about their fats?  Are they getting enough fats?  Are they the right kinds of fats?

No transfats as they interfere with digestion and can cause hunger rather than satiate it. (Is your peanut butter all natural or Peter Pan?)  They need a healthy balance (abundance) of omega 3 and omega 6 (GLA) fats to satiate the cravings for food.

I also agree that yeast, leaky gut or allergies could be contributing factors especially if they crave sugar and carbohydrates on a regular basis.

Could they have parasites?

My chiro told me one time that our grandmothers always de-wormed the children in the spring just in the normal course of things.  My mom confirmed this, too.  Her mom did just that, with something called black draw.

I know there are some herbs that could be used to do this--and with children I'd think that it wouldn't take more than one or two doses to do the job if that is part of the problem.  I've been thinking of dosing my kids, but I need to decide how to.

Burping could be caused by wolfing down their food.  Then, maybe the solution would be some training in not taking too large of bites and chewing bites well.

Perhaps having a look at the overall diet and determining if they eat some foods that are pre-packaged and/or denatured.  They could indeed be hungry because they are not getting the vits/mins necessary.

And then there's just plain ole' growth spurts.  Boys seem (at least to me) to really have to calorie up in those times.  I just make sure they snack on healthy stuff like fruit and eat a full meal three times a day with whole foods, mainly.  And then, as my mom in law says was told, "Go and get a drink of water, dear."  Sometimes they really are thirsty.

HTH,
Cara

My 3 older sons are 12, 11, & 8.  Each one can out-eat me if it's something they like (they would have to be pretty desperate to eat a meal of fresh green beans - but I could do that.).  I would have to agree that the fat is a big contributer to keeping them fueled enough to work, play and grow all in one day.  My 11 yo son is on a severely fat restriced diet because of a recent pancreas injury/surgery.  He lost about 12-15% of his total body weight in the process and has not been able to regain the weight w/o the fats.  He can maintain if he eats 4-5 protein rich meals  in a day - but he can't get enough essential fats to make any headway.

I would recommend adding fat (good, natural fats) to their foods when you can.  Omlet with cheese instead of just scrambled eggs.  Butter the bread for every sandwich.

It is more expensive this way - but fat is essential to growth of brain tissue and other functions.
