Looking for info on MVP, mitral valve prolapse
« on: July 27, 2007, 10:00:57 AM » by wlwest
I only saw one post on here about this, and it had to do with taking the pre-med before dental work.

I haven't been feeling well the last few days, dizzy, headaches, heart palpitations, etc.  And it never dawned on me to think, oh it's probably my MVP.  My old dr. said I could take beta blockers, and it's supposed to prevent the symptoms.  I called my new dr. (old one moved Cry) to see if he would just call me in a prescription without having to go in.

Anyway, are those a good idea?  I did see something about low magnesium, so I'm going to start making sure I take my supplements more faithfully.

I don't know if a MD would just call in a new prescription for beta-blockers if you haven't been on them before.  There are some pretty significant side effects and monitoring that goes along with their use.  You may have been thru testing in the past that was documented by your old MD, but unless the new one has this info I would think that he would require at least an office visit for evaluation.

Ah!  My dr did call me, and called in the medicine for me.  He said that the only side effect may be some dizziness, and to let him know.  I don't have any insurance, so he is pretty good about helping out on the phone.  Plus his office is usually booked up.

I have that Bone Ami, but haven't been taking it like I should.  So, I'm going to make sure I take that, was reading that might help.

I was just surprised that maybe my headaches could be from this.

Just wondered if anyone else had this.

If he is giving you a beta-blocker I am just a little concerned that he doesn't want to monitor you.  They can cause dizziness due to the drop in blood pressure and heart rate that often occurs with these medications.
I understand your need to not want to rack up unnecessary cost, but just be careful and if you feel at all weak or lightheaded,or have any kind of swelling or lung congestion let him know.
The magnesium also is a good idea, too.  Make sure you stay well hydrated and take care.

Thanks for the info.

I'm a little leary of taking it! Smiley  I never filled the other presecription my old doctor gave me.   Roll Eyes

Maybe I'll see how I feel first.  I've been dizzy all day, and I don't want to get worse.

My main concern is at my dc request, we are going to homeschool again, but I don't want to be sickly the whole time!

I wanted to restart this thread again, I've been looking over MVP on the internet and was reading the magnesium thread on here as i've been reading that it's sometimes a cause of MVP symptoms.  I've been so tired lately, and just not depressed really, but not having any energy or desire to do much.  I was surprised when I thought about looking up MVP that all those things can be part of MVP!  Even my numbness in my hands and arms, not being able to sleep at night, fatigue, etc.

I've ordered some books about it, and was reading over some links on the magnesium thread about MVP.  I never did get those beta blockers, the pharmacists was saying they cause nightmares!  So, I didn't want those.

I was just wondering if anyone else with these symptoms might want to check and see if they have this.  I would never thought a heart problem would relate to anxiety, depression, etc.
