I second ndmomof6.

Thank you, ladies!  I feel better about giving it to them now.  We're praying that they sleep much better tonight. Smiley

We also used an alcohol-based lobelia w/o reservation for croup, and hot water will dissipate up to 50% of the alcohol.

Just echoing what's been said.   Grin

Thanks for your comment, Yooper.  Another question.  How long before any of you saw improvement in your child's croup?  We've been giving it to both girls since yesterday.  (The bottle says 7 drops in water, 3 times a day).  So far, there is no improvement.  Our 3yo is still having coughing fits where she can't get enough air.  We will end up at the ER tonight if she gets worse.  Any insight?

I saw improvement w/i the 1/2 day.

That must be scary...  Sad

Some would be more aggressive w/ the lobelia than those instructions are.  It has a built in overdose where you vomit if it's too much.  Are mullein, or wild cherry bark handy?

Saying a prayer.

I second Yooper's advice.

Also, with croup, if you can get them cold or cooled off, it helps.  I think with other coughs steam helps.  I know with one of ours that got a little croupy one night in the middle of the night and couldn't catch his breath, we took him outside in the cold for about ten minutes.  That calmed him down enough to get back to sleep.

Now, I know this is from a fictional book, but in the Anne of Green Gables book, she gave her friend's little sister a very strong expectorant which caused her to throw up which caused her to be able to breathe again.

Not necessarily recommending that....just throwing it out there for consideration.

LOL, I've thought about that a few times!  I think it was Ipecac.

My hubby went out and bought another cool mist humidifier, and we'll keep the girls right in front of that all night.  I'll up the dose of lobelia a bit and see if that helps.  I don't have any mullein or wild cherry bark.  I need to do some more herb shopping, I guess.  Undecided

Thank you for all of your help, ladies.  And thank you for your prayers!

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before on here, but when mine get croupy I use onions.  I slice thick slices and place them in a towel.  I place the towel on the child's chest with a hot water bottle (heating pad will work) and leave that on for 10-15 minutes.  It really opens the airways.

I also put some slices in honey and let that sit for a couple of hours.  Remove the onions and stir.  Give 1 tsp as needed.  (This shouldn't be given to baby under 1 yr).

Good things to bring up, Floydian!   Smiley

As far as cold air...if you don't have cold weather where you are...the freezer air works.  We did the combo of hot/steamy air/cold air, too.

There's a post on taking lobelia until throwing up to help w/ breathing.  Asthma related?  Let me look...start reading here: http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,3741.msg229748.html#msg229748

Okay, well, I've been doing the onion packs on them all night every night for three nights in a row.  We've also done steam and then the freezer.  I've also been slathering the soles of their feet and their chests with GOOT pretty often during the day and right before bed.

Last night the girls did better.  My 3yo only had a coughing fit every 2 hours.  It doesn't sound like there's much phlegm left.  She just has a hard time catching her breath and makes that horrble wheezing sound when she tries to breathe in.  My 22mo. old had a coughing fit every couple of hours and hers is more sounding like she's trying to cough up phlegm.  She doesn't have trouble catching her breath.  She just cries because it hurts so bad to cough.   Sad

I'll read that thread.  Thank you!

If she's making that wheezing sound when she breathes in, you might want to check out the whooping cough thread.

My pediatrician has always told me that croup is a 3 day thing...with the second day being the worst.

Isn't this forum great for sorting stuff out and gaining support?   Kiss

One other thought besides watching out for whooping cough is re: the bowels.  SO many times cough/congestion is related to sluggish bowels.  Any possibility here?

Yes, it most certainly is!  Cheesy  I am so thankful for this community.  All of you ladies are an incredible encouragement to me!

I'm planning on doing a garlic oil enema tonight on the babies.  Hopefully that will help as well.  I'm reading the threads that were suggested and making notes for future reference.   Grin

Thanks again for all of your help, ladies!

Oooooo....That reminds me.  I've done that before with my older ones!   I have given tons and tons and tons of vitamin C.  It flushes the system and works especially well with a cough.  And if you add pure MSM to the mix, that really helps!!!!!

If you need to get a little one to STOP coughing in the night, I highly recommend pure cocoa, mixed witha a little honey and water to form a syrup.  Kids love taking this one and it works so much better than any store  bought cough syrup!!!

Interesting.  I think I might try that too.  Might not work for the babies, though.  When they're half asleep, they fight me when I just try to give them a drink of water.  Undecided  The older three girs are coughing too, so that would work for them.

Okay, we went ahead and took the babies to our doc (great guy, goes to our church, doesn't push vacs  Wink)  Anyway, he thinks it's pertussis since he heard their coughing, so we're on an antibiotic for the next four days.   Undecided  We're doing a bunch of the other ideas from the whooping cough thread as well.  Thanks for all of your help, ladies.  Y'all are great!   Grin

Looks like we are facing croup again here! My 7 year old woke up with seal barking cough saying he couldnt hardly breathe.  I gave him Old Indian Wild Cherry Bark Syrup and Lobelia 9 drops or so.   The effect of the Lobelia was very quick, and it relaxed his airways. I plan on giving him the Wild cherry syrup and Lobelia every 3 hours, for a total of 6x today.

I feel Lobelia is a must to keep in my cupboard! Smiley Only a tiny bit makes such a huge difference. We are in the midst of a blizzard right now. Sure am glad I have this stuff on hand!

Also I read about putting Collidial Silver in the nebulizer cup and admininstering it that way for croup.
