Hi!

My friend recently gave me some red raspb. leaf tea to try.  Just wondering what it's supposed to taste like?  I'm used to Celestial Seas. red rasp tea: red in color and raspb. tasting.  The tea I'm trying (from bulk herb store) is light green/yellow and tastes like grass/hay or something.  It's not that I don't like it, but just wondering if I brewed it wrong??

Megan~

Ok, here is the difference.  The Celestial tea is Red Raspberry tea.  The bulk herb store is red raspberry LEAF tea.  One is from the fruit, the other is from the leaf.  They are two very different teas.
I always wondered why they were so different!

You probably can get the red rasp leaf at your local health food store, but boy am I glad I price-compared.  They wanted $21.99/lb for it, while the bulkherbstore is more like $5.95/lb.  I have been so happy with all of the herbs and books I have received from them, I definitely echo the recommenations to check them out and utilize their wonderful resources!!
Shocked Shocked They are making money!!! I could get it for $8/lb at my favorite health food store. BTW Bulkherb store is great too.

I take red raspberry and drink the tea every month because it strengthens so many parts of the body, specifically the uterus, allowing for proper function of the body. It's ability to take away cramps and sickness makes it a life saver!

What is it in Red Raspberry leaf that makes it effective? Is it the magnesium? I know magnesium is given to Moms trying to avoid pre-term labor.

Supposedly it's a source of B12, BUT I wrote about this in another thread.  I'm not sure if it's got B12 or not.  There's some discrepancies as to whether you can get B12 from vegatable sources or not.

Some interesting stuff about RRL in Shonda Parker's Naturally Healthy Pregnancy (older edition, p. 32-33):

"There has been speculation that the CULTIVATED variety of RR (Rubus idaeus) may be of danger to PG women due to the presence of caffeic acid in the plant that has shown in one test to inhibit chorionic gonadotropin activity in rats being injected.  Other studies clearly show uterine relaxation.  The question is whether Rubus idaeus can cause miscarriage in women who are prone to miscarriages.  The R. stringosus variety has been advocated as an alternative to the R. idaeus.  This advice has been based on the assumption that the wild variety (stringosus) has been safely used throughout history by women during PG to add tone flaccid uteri and relax irritable uteri.

There is no available research (1998) on R. stringosus so it is difficult to validate the claim that stringosus is safer than idaeus.  It's not also known whether stringosus contains caffeic acid as does R. idaeus...

The Basic CARE Booklets from the Medical Training Institute of America also issue a caution about using R. idaeus as well as recommending  R. stringosus for PG.  I was unable to track down the source for this caution.

I feel it somewhat necessary to defend R. idaeus.  It is the cultivated variety of red raspberry, and R. stringosus is a wild variety.  Since R. idaeus is the cultivated variety, it is the one found in most (almost all) herbal combinations and as a single herb in liquid or capsule form.  It would seem that we would be seeing a great increase in miscarriages among women using RRL during PG if R. idaeus is indeed a problem.  I should also note that those concerned w/ women using R. idaeus during PG feel it is only a problem for WOMEN PRONE TO MISCARRIAGE.

I personally feel that moms who have had several miscarriages who are wanting to be very cautious should use R. stringosus.  The problem w/ that is that it is not widely available.  Most herb companies use R. idaeus and most caregivers educated in herbalism feel comfortable recommending it.  I was branded a "habitual aborter" (woman who has had 3 or more miscarriages) prior to using herbs for healing.  I have used the R. idaeus variety of RRL in my last 3 PGs, and my PGs keep getting better and better.  I had absolutely no bleeding or spotting w/ my 4th child, Eliana.

For moms concerned about cultivated RRL (R. idaeus), is can most certainly be taken after the 16th week of PG when hCG levels stabilize."

I would be interested in knowing how many Beeyoutiful Capsules equal One cup of tea.  The article in the Winter catalog said to take up to 6 capsules a day, but Im not for sure exactly how many cups of tea that equals. I was mainly thinking of the last month or so, in preperation for birth.

I am pregnant with baby #4 (my first WTM baby  Smiley ) I have never used RRL in pregnancy before, I have a history of very early miscarriages and had preterm labor with my first 2. My Dr with the 3rd determined that I just have an "irritable uterus" as I had never delivered early and thus I avoided bed rest and meds...... (my first 2 were girls 3rd was a boy, maybe that made a diff?) Anyhow, now with my fourth, I did not take RRL during my first trimester. I am now 14-15 wks and last wk started RRL. At first we had it in tea bags and I didn't notice any probs.... when we got our order of loose leaf tea, my DH offered to make me a pot of tea.  I forgot to tell him not to use too much and he used a small handful of RRL in about 4 cups of tea. I drank 2- 2.5 cups. So later that night, after intimacy (sorry for TMI but I don't know if it is important), I started having some pretty bad cramping and some contractions. It has been 2 days and I still have some cramping and, when the cramping is most noticeable, my uterus is very hard. So, did I just take too much RRL or should I avoid it altogether?  I haven't had any RRL since and am just taking it pretty easy (other than the vomiting as morning sickness is not over yet).  Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

I know that in Shonda Parker's Naturally Healthy Pregnancy book, she does state that RRL can/could be a problem for some women.  She even says it may be the difference between wild and cultivated varieties of RR.  It was probably too strong for starters and the extra stimulation later made it worse.  Just intimacy by itself can cause cramping like that sometimes.  I would just focus on relaxing, stay hydrated, maybe take some extra cal/mag supplements.  Deep breathing and focusing on relaxing the body and particularly the uterus can do wonders!  You might be able to try RRL again in a few days, but much less concentrated.  Hope you feel better soon!

Beppy--have you ever considered low progesterone being the link b/w the miscarriages and premature labor?  I've been reading about that relationship.

Thanks for the suggestion Kitty. I am actually using Progesterone cream this pregnancy, though not for miscarriage or labor but for my morning sickness. It seems to have helped and I will be interested to see if my practitioner wants me to continue through the whole pregnancy and if it has any effect on my "irritable uterus".

I know there are differing views about when to start taking RRL, so I asked my nurse midwife at the hospital the other day about it.  Her recommendation was that if you were used to taking/drinking it on a regular basis, then it should be fine to use it the whole pregnancy.  However, if your body is not accustomed to it, she recommended not using it until the last few weeks of pregnancy.
