I think so.  It clogs your pores really bad.  I have a friend in cosmetology school and she says putting any product with mineral oil or petrolium in it on your body is one of the worst things you can do!  I have had personal experience with it too; my daughter breaks out in a rash if I use any mineral oil or petrolium product on her for more than two days in a row.  And I had been putting baby oil on my skin when I was preggo, and all my pores clogged up, and it even made my stretched-out belly itchier.  I use jojoba oil instead.  Or olive oil.  I think I'll try that recipe, HB! Hi!  I've been wanting to try this and didn't have beeswax...BUT I just realized a I have some beeswax candles from our local beekepper...I'm going to try and shave them on a cheese grater to melt w/ my oil.  Thanks for the recipe proportions!   Smiley  Jen

Does anyone have any more info as to what is bad about petroleum jelly? I've used it on my hands for years, I have very old looking hands. Is that maybe the reason? Has anyone tried this recipe yet? Do you think there could be anything you could substitute for the beeswax? I don't know of anyone local who keeps bees.
Thanks! Smiley

You can  buy a beeswax online - try ebay, I am told you can get anything there.  Or look for beeswax candles and melt that down.

We make a balm of equal parts beeswax and coconut oil.  In hot weather, like now, it works great for lips, hands, my husbands eyelids, etc.  When the weather gets colder you just add a greater portion of coconut oil so it is not quite so hard.

We just got some honey comb.  I am having everyone spit the wax out after they are done chewing on it.  So....can I use that as beeswax or has the abc (already been chewed) taken some good stuff out?

I just made some salve w/ coconut oil and the shaved beeswax candle.  Didn't measure but it was about a 4:1 ration...it's setting up nicely in some Altoid tins!   Roll Eyes  My husband was using Vaseline on a dry nose and I couldn't stand it anymore!  Can't remember why petroleum is bad, but just remember that it was.  Clogging?  This smells nicer, too!  Thanks again!

I just read about this recently and was shocked and threw out everything I had that had petroleum derivatives in it.
In a magazine called Health Keepers, Philip Fritchey who wrote  the book Practical Herbology stated that petroleum based cosmetics have compounds called xeno-estrogens which mean "false" estrogens.  He states that "these compounds have a similar molecular "tail" to estrogens, and are capable of interacting with estrogen receptors in the body in a completely unordered way."  They are easily absorbed into the bloodstream bypassing the protection of the liver.  He says it is like putting an estrogen patch on your face and it would be better to eat these cosmetics than wear them on your skin.  He says that conditions such as heavy and irregular periods, early peri-menopausal symptoms and infertility can be traced to the effect of these chemicals.  More information can be found in Dr. John R. Lee's book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause.  Look for ingredients in you products under the names of petroleum, mineral oil, PEG, propylene glycol, stearates, etc.
That was enough for me to throw out everything I owned with those ingredients.  Right now all I use is coconut oil on my face and a natural mineral make-up that he recommended.
I couldn't believe that something so ordinary could be so dangerous.  But I guess we really shouldn't put something on our face that we also put in our car.    Undecided

WELL..... we just took a few frames off our honey hives for the kids to scrape off and chew.  I took a small jar of the comb to my DIL at our Bible study group, gave it to her and told her, "what you spit out, I want back."  Everyone else was grossed out, but my dear DIL figured out what it was and what I meant!  I told her she could come over with the spit out wax and make some lip balm for herself.  So, yes you can used the abc wax!!! Was just on an interesting website that has a lot of great supplies relevant to things we have discussed here on welltellme.  Caught my eye because they do sell beeswax.  Lots of other great stuff, and a rather lengthy book list.  I was searching for coconut oil when I came across it.  The link is:

My daughter and I made some of this a few days ago.  It was super easy and works great!
Here is a pic:

We are blessed to have a bee factory near us so got the beeswax locally.

Hi, I found this post and I was wondering since it's so old if you had possibly made it yet.  If so, how are measuring the beeswax?  I have just a big block of it, so do I just grate 1/4 cup?  Thanks!

Never tried this myself, but found it on the WWW and thought I'd post it if anyone is interested.

Non-Petroleum Jelly
1 cup oil (your choice)
1/4 cup beeswax
Melt oil and beeswax together. Pour into containers, let cool.

If I may step in, Wink ,that's what I did, although I made a smaller batch using the same proportions.  Thanks again, HB!

I put my block of beeswax in the pan and turned the heat on low.  I let it melt for a while and then took the block our with tongs.  I poured the melted beeswax into a cup to measure.

I don't know that this is the best way to do it but it worked for me.

Thanks to  YooperMama and aussieinamerica for responding.  I'm going to give it a try this week.  Did any of you use this for circumcision healing by any chance?

Thanks, again Cheesy

I hope it works - I ordered some un-petroleum jelly and when I got it, it has hydrogenated oil it.  So I was a little upset and am now looking for alternatives.

I still have 4-6 weeks before the birth - so it will be awhile before I know how it will work.

Thanks again.

I never did make this.  I don't really have a need for it.  I hardly ever used petroleum jelly anyway.  I used to use it years ago to take off my waterproof mascara, but quit using that too.  Also used to use it for sore private areas, but Miracle Salve and coconut oil works well for this purpose.  I can't really think of another good use for Vaseline except to use in place of axle grease.

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

I have a bunch of unrefined beeswax, but I think it may go to waste, because cleaning it is very time consuming and both recipes that I tried with it turned out miserable failures.   Undecided

I know what you mean.  I don't use it either, not since my first son was born (10 years ago) and was circumcised.  That's why I need it now.  Thanks, anyway.

Hi, I know this post is old - but I just looked back and see I never followed up.  I had my son on July 19th and have been very busy -  it worked GREAT. I was very happy with it and even made some for my friend.
Thanks again.

i am so excited that i found this thread.  it is exactly what i was looking for!  my second son is due in june, and i was trying to find an alternative to vasoline for his circumcision.  my first son's circ was red and irritated for a long time, and i truly believe it was because the pedi kept telling me to slather it up with vasoline.  my question is: would anyone recommend adding something to the mixture if i am using for this purpose?  i had considered tea tree oil or something else to aid with the healing.  and how much would i add to this 1 1/4 cup recipe to be effective?  any suggestions?

YES!  Miracle Skin salve from BeeYoutiful!  It is beeswax based.  You can also use straight lanolin (like the kind for cracked n*pples).  I was DEVASTATED when my husband said, "No more Aquaphor," and we use these 2 ointments for everything.

You might also consider adding some grapefruit seed extract/crush to you non-petrol jelly.... I would think that for a cup I would add 20-25 drops of the tea tree or gse/gsc each

It could just be that my family has sensitive skin, but I would think TTO would burn if it's for a circ.  I'd go with GSE if you feel like you need to add it.   ~L

Oh, and by the way, I use this same beeswax/olive oil base (with some honey, vanilla, shea butter, or whatever else I feel like) for my lip balm.  I just couldn't get used to the idea of a carcinogen on my mouth!
