Xrays [X-rays]: Benefits & Risks of Radiation Exposure
« on: August 09, 2007, 09:00:05 AM » by bakermom
I got a lower x-ray yesterday and now i regret it.  I am fearful that the radiation could have harmed a future baby in some way or may prevent a pregnancy.  Do any of you have experience with this?  I feel good that the chiro is helping me but I did not think about this before I got the xray.  I am already 41 and hoping to get pregnant.

You may want to ask your doctor if you are this concerned.  Chiropractors tend to be extremely conservative in their treatments.

I have never seen or heard of any evidence that there is a reason to be concerned about this low dose of radiation other than for a developing baby.

I have an X-Ray question! My nearly-1-year-old (her birthday is next week!) has a muscular problem called hypotonia, and trouble eating solid foods. She is in occupational therapy for eating (she's extremely underweight), and physical therapy for her delayed gross motor skills.

Anyway, the occupational therapists have asked me repeatedly if she gets lots of colds (she does). Today, when we were in therapy, the therapist said that since she coughs and gets water eyes while she eats, and gets colds often, she may be aspirating her food. They said that if it was REALLY bad, she'd be getting pneumonia, which she's never had.

So they mentioned an X-Ray swallow study, where they X-Ray her several times to see if the food is getting into her lungs. I hate getting her x-rayed - she's already had it done once when she choked on some food last year. How dangerous is it for young children? Is it better to avoid it, or in this case do you think it's necessary?

I think the question I'd ask is whats the treatment for her aspirating food?  If they are doing a swallowing study just to see if she has the problem, depending on what the treatment is you may want to just assume she IS doing this since she has so many of the other symptoms.  I would be tempted to say she is aspirating, mildly, and just do the precautions/therapy they say to do.. unless they want to medicate.  In either case, she hasn't had any type of lung infections, so I don't know that I would do the study since she seems to be handling it okay so far....

What are the big risks with X-rays at such a young age?

I think it is because they are developing so rapidly.......
I mean, babies in the womb get majorally affected by x-rays, I don't understand why that would change once they are out of the womb....

I have some experience doing Swallowing Studies...... It could very well show you if she is aspirating her food.
Thing is, IF she is... then her body is continually fighting an infection in her lungs. It may have never developed to pneumonia, but regardless her body is 'distracted' by this possible continual fight.
Could be why she is catching every illness that comes her way.

I'd probably see if there was anyway to diagnose Aspriration without the study, and go the route mentioned above....but if you HAVE to know for sure.... then a Swallow Study could give you that information and you could go from there.
Insurance would probably  need the formal diagnosis to move on with that treatment.... and that would involve a swallow study (probably).

digital xrays vs. the "old" kind

Do any of you have knowledge about digital xrays and the significant decrease in radiation exposer?  I was told that lead protection isn't necessary anymore, but most docs still use it b/c people aren't educated about it yet.  I am trying to find the truth about this, but not getting very far in my research.  Anyone know?

Thanks!

Just wanting to bump this up to see if anyone else had thoughts about this situation. I just recently had a pelvic x ray and was concerned that it might do damage to my reproductive organs or harm my eggs or something. I am not pregnant so I'm not worried about that, just concerned about my ability to conceive in the future. Thanks

I know it isn't any kind of proof but if it helps any I had numerous full spine x-rays when I was 11 & 12 years old b/c I was being treated for scoliosis. Since then I have gone on to have 3 children. 3 pregnancies didn't do much good for my back  Wink but the x-rays didn't seem to have hurt my chances of conception. Just my .02.
