  Glycerine tinctures
« on: July 05, 2006, 02:00:12 PM » by mexmarr
I just got my forst order of herb from the bulk Herb Store. Yea!  I am almost ready to make four different tinctures.  All I need id the glycerine, which I hope to get on Friday.  We have decided against making a mixed tincture, as my husband prefers that I don't even buy vodca.  So, has anyone else made a glycerine tincure?  Do you have any hints, suggestions etc?

I have made a few glycerin tinctures...Immune booster, sweet sleep, and Jungle juice.  It really is quite easy, just follow the directions from BHS.  I think that I will do a mixed tincture though next time as I think it probably will make a stronger tincture as alcohol draws the herbs qualities out better.  My hubby tried to take the jungle juice straight like a shot, and boy was his face a funny sight Grin!!  Glycerin is real sweet, for my kids I dissolve it in apple juice and for the real picky ones it goes in orange juice to hide the taste.  I am hoping that the mixed tincture may not be as yucky to them...we'll see!! OK, I'm trying my first tincture with glycerine. Jungle Juice for Women. It's in the crockpot. I need someone with experience to tell me - do the dried herbs pretty much absorb all the moisture? I filled the jar according to the BHS recipe, and now it looks like the jar is only about half full. Did I not put the lid on tight enough and the liquid escaped? Or is this the way it's supposed to be?

Did you stir it really well when you added the glycerine?  If you don't stir well in the beginning, you may not add enough glycerine to it.  It tends to settle and you need to add more.  How long have you had it in the crock pot?  If not long, I would consider adding more.

While we're on the subject:  Can anyone tell me the shelf-life of their glycerine tinctures?  I have read 1 year and I have read 1-2 years.  I have some Immune Booster left from last year that is still sealed and I cant' stand the thought of throwing it away.  If it is no longer good, would it just lose it's effectiveness or would it actually spoil?  This is the first time I've had any left this long.  We were so much healthier last year!  Smiley

It's in a mason jar, and I shook (shaked?) the jar before I started heating it. Will that not work? Sounds like maybe I need to add more glycerine either way. I ran out, so I'll have to buy more. It's been in the crockpot now for 48 hours. Will it be no good? No big deal if it's not, it was a small batch just to try. I'd really rather use alcohol. My husband said that tequila would work well, but I am not of the tequila-buying sort. Roll Eyes  I'm hinting to (at?) him to buy some for me.  Wink Anyone else use tequila?

It will probably still be ok, but more concentrated.  I would stir it next time instead of shaking.  I have never used tequila, but have used vodka before with good results.   Smiley

Where does one buy glycerin? Also, is it unsafe to use any alcohol tinctures on children?

Not an expert, but I believe that the reason vodka is recommended its that it generally has a high alcohol concentration which efficiently extracts the good stuff from the herbs.  Additionally, vodka has very little taste of its own, so it would not make a strange taste to the tincture.

Tequila has a definite taste to it, so I personally wouldn't use it for a tincture.  But it is really up to each individual.

I found this info at www.bulkherbstore.com

Glycerites (tinctures / extracts made with glycerin) are syrupy liquids that provide an alcohol-free alternative to the more popular alcohol tincture. Glycerin has a sweet taste (but doesn't affect sugar levels) and thus is preferred by children over an alcohol or vinegar tincture. My little ones liked my mixture of half alcohol and half glycerin tinctures.

Food grade (vegetable) glycerin can be purchased for about $30/gallon at your local pharmacy (or from Azure Standard, 79709 Dufur Valley Road, Dufur, OR 97021; (541) 467-2230; www.azurefarm.com).

I also found this there about alcohol tinctures

Pregnant mamas can easily evaporate the alcohol by placing their dose in a hot liquid like tea or water before taking it.

I'm new at tinctures, but I'm using alcohol and will 'serve' them to the kids in a bit of warm/hot peppermint tea probably.

Also try here for serving & preparing ideas:

Ok, I did make 2 of the tinctures, jungle juice and rasberrry leaf.  I have been pleased with them.  I get the same result from the raspberry tincture as I get from the tea.

I store my tinctures in the fridge, but I was wondering if it is safe to leave them out.  I am asking because we will be going to Mexico in November and I want to take them with me.  We will be traveling 2-3 days in the car.  Can I carry the tinctures along?

Or do I need an ice chest and ice packs?

If they are alcohol based, I'm sure they'll keep just fine.  If they are glycerine or vinegar, I'm not sure.

Thet are glycerine based.  Maybe I should bring them in an ice chest just to be safe!

I store my glycerin tinctures in the fridge, but the ones that I am using in the dropper bottles, I keep in the cupboard or even on the counter when we are in need of them a lot.  I think they will be okay on your trip as long as there isn't extreme temperatures (too hot).  If they are going to be stored in the car where it could get hot, then you may want to keep them in the cooler.  The only exception is my Jungle juice that I keep in the fridge just for storage purposes.  I think the best thing is to keep them from getting too hot and in direct sunlight.  I store my larger portions (that I refill my bottles with) in the fridge because I don't have "cool" storage like a root cellar.  My basement is only a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house.  Hope this makes sense, I'm fighting a cold and my head is a little "foggy" Tongue

I leave my glycerine tinctures out.  When I put the finished product into a mason jar, the lid usually seals.  But even the ones I put into smaller tincture bottles, I have always left out with no problems.  The only exception would be anything that contains fresh garlic.   Smiley

Does anyone know about what temperature their crockpots cook the glycerites at?  I am using the BulkHerbstore directions and have my slow cooker on the lowest setting.  It is keeping the water temperature at about 125 F.  I plan to leave it for three days.

I actually don't own a crockpot so I did mine in the electric oven on the lowest setting which was 170 degrees. That seemed to work just fine.

I posted again asking how long you leave your tinctures in the oven.  Thought I would also PM you in case my post gets pushed down the list.  Thanks for your input.
Oh sorry Christal,
I hadn't looked back since I posted! I left them in for the 3 days. I used a shallow ceramic baking dish with a towel to place the jars in. I put about an inch of water in the dish and replaced that as it evaporated.

ABC Herbal says if you make the "sealed simmer" type of glycerine tincture it should keep in a cool dark place for 2 years.

Based on the book:
Use a pint jar
Use one ounce herb per pint
Fill jar 1/2 from top with 60% glycerine, 40% water (on top of the herbs)
Put lids and rings on jars
Place in a pan of water, half up sides of jars
Simmer for 2-3 hours
Strain and then re-jar or bottle, close tighly and store in cool dark place
Lasts 2-3 years

If in a hurry, you can bring water to boiling and boil for 20-40 minutes, then strain and bottle.

Bumping this up, and thanking you all for sharing info here on this topic.  I haven't made a glycerin tincture yet, but hope to make Children's Composition soon.

Ok I just strained some glycerin tincture and it has a kind of foam on the top!  has anyone experienced this before?  I have tinctured a lot but haven't made glycerin in a while.  It looks like it is kind of bubbly?  Is it safe?

I think Shoshanna's method will work better than ABC Herbals.  They are basically the same, but Shoshanna only wets the herbs and then fills the jar with glycerin.  She then pours boiling water over the herbs after they've been strained.

(At least I think it was her.  I went to look for the document on BHS and I can't find it.  Don't remember where I read it.)

I found out the other day that glycerin likes to stick to the herbs and it's very difficult to get every last drop of the good stuff out, so pouring the boiling water over them at the very last helps to "rinse" them and you still get your 60/40 split because you used 100 glycerin to start with.  Make sense?

Found it...

http://www.bulkherbstore.com/SNT?s=glycerite

(except it wasn't the sealed jar method.)

I made my first glycerite in a saucepan and when I strained it, the herbs were very sticky, so rinsing them after, helped get the extra stuff out (no waste).
