Foods that fly...or ah, at least travel well :)
« on: September 04, 2007, 02:19:50 AM » by milmuth
I am looking for ideas for snacks and meals that travel well AND will get through security in the airport.  No liquids or gelatinous foods.  No fresh produce that is fleshy- only fruit allowed in pineapple.  No tomatoes, etc.

My husband has been traveling alot, been home for a few months, and is now starting to travel more again.  He'd like some different meals/snacks for the next trip.  Any ideas?

Things I've done:

breakfast:
muffins (home made, usually blueberry bran)
hard boiled eggs
bread with butter/jam

lunch/dinner type food:
sandwhich (meat, cheese, mustard, spinach-it's made it ok, but no tomato allowed so not as moist as he likes)
carrot sticks
granola bars
homemade cookie
crackers and cheese
nut/seed mix
dried fruit (fresh can't go)

sometimes he has taken an icepack in the snack pack, but not always room for that esp on longer trips.  So, foods that don't need to be kept cold are better.  He has resorted to buying food on the plane, but it is never "up to par".  Drinks he gets on the plane, or fills an empty water bottle at a water fountain in the airport (after security) to save money Smiley (tricks of the trade).

Anyway, any new ideas would be great!

I recently flew and I took along grapes in a baggie and went through security just fine!  It was a wonderful plane snack actually.  I also like to take popcorn because it is lightweight and nice and crunchy.  The cost of airport food and drink is scandalous!!!  They really know how to rip you off, especially since most flights now hardly offer your a bag of peanuts!

Last October I had toast for my 5 yob, and they would not allow it.  This was departing from Denver's DIA, and I realize that they have relaxed the rules a bit since.  I asked what was dangerous about buttered toast and the glove handed security said that it just wasn't allowed.  They also took my chapstick.  Angry

I took applesauce and yogurt for my kids a couple of weeks ago, but not really sure that was officially allowed.  Also a lot of dried fruit, granola bars, and crackers.  My husband appreciated the granola bars the most.  I've made trail mix too but I don't like stuff that's too salty on planes since you have to drink a lot.  But when they go around handing out MSG and artificially flavored "snacks", I am grateful.

Accoring to a list I found, Jello and liquids are allowed.  Is this list incorrect?

produce: due to the agricultural laws of the mainland (continental USA) we cannot bring any fleshy produce= not even for lunch!  which, yes,is very ridiculous consider most COME from the mainland (a lot of our food is mostly shipped here!)  So, the ONLY fruit we can take on a plane off the island is pineapple (when going to the mainland).

Tomato is a fleshy fruit, technically.  I'v ehad it slip through, and I've had my husband lose his whole sandwhich b/c of it Sad

No drinks or liquids, toothpaste as a carry on is even questioned every time- must only be the travel size, regular size is confiscated.  So anything of that consistency is taken.  If jello is in a storebought travel container that is clearly  labeled and unopened MAYBE we could get it through- but we don't like it.  My homemade yogurt wouldn't make it Sad

Any more suggestions would be helpful.  Between safety on the plane and "safety" of your food at the farm, we are pretty limited.   Huh

I have also been wondering about what foods I can get away with on the plane cause I will be flying out of the country in December.
I thought about dehydrating some veggies and fruit to take.

So you're on an island?  Hawaii?  This seems much more strict that just traveling across the continental U.S.!  I sure loooooove pineapple!  I wouldn't complain if I HAD to bring that along!   Grin

traveling internationally partly depends on where you are going- but generally speaking no meats (not jerky or anything) or produce that is unprocessed will make it.  We've lost nuts too Sad  Usually that is upon entering the foreign country, so if it truly is just for the plane ride there, you should be ok with those things.

popcorn is a great idea- I'll have to get creative with seasoning it but lots of flexibility- mixing nuts in a sweet popcorn might be better than msg junk too!   ...I see some new recipes coming....  Grin

How about a dried fruit & nut trail mix? I used to make that for DH all the time when he drove cross country & it's a fall back around here for any kind of traveling. We never fly though, so it never even occurred to me that they might not let it on a plane.

OK, some other possible ideas for local travel, many of them won't be allowed for international:

Nuts & whole grain crackers

Muffins

Jerky

There are some good brand of health food store instant soups that only take boiling water.

Or pop top, heat & eat canned soups or pasta (like canned ravioli only better) from the health food store

For a meal on the plane could he maybe take a frozen burrito, hot pocket type thing , etc & have them micro it on the plane? If it is frozen when he left & wrapped in a hand towel or something, it should stay cold enough. Besides, he might be able to get them to put it in the fridge once the plane takes off.

Packets of tuna or salmon. You can either get the lunch kits, add mayo packets & good crackers for a home made lunch kit or eat it straight out of the packet. Tuna & Italian dressing is pretty good.

It might be a good idea to check with the airline.  Also, if you are connecting, check that airport's particular laws.  My bil and sil were really harassed coming through Heathrow.  But I dont' think the rest are quite as strict.
