Okay,  I have been getting raw cow's milk for about 2 weeks now.  It  seams to go sour just little over a week after I get it.  I now have what I think is curds and whey.  Is there anything I can do with this or do I need to toss it out? Undecided
If you're milk is only lasting a week, then I would suggest discussing it with your supplier or looking at how you clean your containers (if you supply them, that is). My raw milk lasts at least 3 weeks, often 4 weeks in 1/2 gallon canning jars with canning lids.

Also, find out how they filter/strain the milk. If they reuse a cloth, it will be introducing cultures to your milk and it just won't last long. Also, how is the milking equipment cleaned.

Do discuss this with your source. If it were me, I'd want to know that my milk was only lasting a week.

Our milk lasts about 3 weeks as well. My guess is that there is a problem somewhere with the cleanliness of the process. Have you tasted it? Is it sour or just, what we call a strong "cowy", taste? If it is the stronger taste, maybe they are drying up one of the cows. That happens to us and I can't drink the milk when it is more than a few days old. It goes away after awhile. It can also happen when the cow's diet has changed.

We receive our milk in a regular looking milk jug, plastic.  It is sealed and everything.  It comes with a label that says something like for animals only, not fit for human consumption.  It has to have that label in order to be sold in our state.  Is the plastic causing the problem?  I have to admit I really don't know much about milk except that raw is better.  My friend is the one who found this lady and I fully trust my friend, they are the pickiest food people I know.
Do you pick it up from the farm?

I can't believe I missed this question. It is old, but I am going to answer it anyway.  I pick up my milk from a farm, but not the farm.  It is kind of like a coop.  A lot of us get toether and order milk and then the truck delivers the milk to the farm where we then pick it up.

I did make my fridge much colder than the recommended setting and my milk was going about 2 weeks and then my last batch only went a week.   I am trying few new ideas from WTMers of splitting up my milk and shaking it everyday whether I use it or not.  We will see how it goes.  I will have to ask those questions about the supplier.  Thanks all.

Just be careful it doesn't freeze. The cream will curdle if it freezes and tastes gross.

We regularly freeze our milk. Every week, one gallon goes in the fridge and four go in the freezer. And as long as we shake it up really well before putting it in the freezer, we don't have any problems with "chunky cream"  Tongue.

Quick question. Why is our raw cows milk salty? It doesn't smell or taste spoiled or sour. Just extra salty? What is that all about? Anyone know?

Thanks!

Most salty tasting milk has a high somatic cell count...most times that means brewing mastitis. Could be something as simple as that it is the end of lactation. Are they going to stop milking the (or one of the) cow(s) soon? Is she just bred?
Other causes might be something off in the feed, drug residue, or contamination with salted cooling water or not rinsing mechanical milker lines well enough.

If you have any doubts about these people's milk handling practices I would proceed with caution because of the other things going on with your boys.

Just wanted to answer my own question in case someone else was every wondering...  Boysmama was on the right track...

It looked like the cow was try to stop lactation. The people "baby sitting" the cow were only milking her once a day.. so her milk supply was really going down. It took a few days of milking her 2 times a day and the milk cleared out & now is just creamy & wonderful!! Thank God!!

So the saltiness was due to not milking enough & the milking supply going down.  Grin
