Organizing Health Info: Notebooks, Cardfiles, PC Docs, Etc.

i'm keeping a notebook of all the neat tidbits i learn

Funny you should mention this.  I've just recently decided to make my own "textbook" about everything I learn.  They don't teach any of this stuff in schools, colleges or on the discovery channel, so the only place my kids are gonna learn it is from me.  I got to thinking that if I created a "textbook" or notebook with articles, recipes, etc, my kids would have a resource for teaching my grandchildren the same things I'm trying to teach my kids and myself.

I haven't started the notebook, but I have a database full of recipes and a blog with lots of info that I've collected.  I just have to sit down and gather it into one place and organize it better.   Grin

I'm doing the same thing.  I try to find what free information I can on the web about healthy cooking, non-toxic cleaning, etc. but I want to limit the time I spend on the 'puter and don't always want to be on it trying to find information that I already spent the time to find once.  So if I print out what I found I need an organized place to keep it...voila!...a notebook.

That's the idea, anyway.  Now...to actually get it done the way I would like to!

Hey gals, (and guys),  just wanted to throw this in.  I have been making what I call an herbal notebook.  I have lots of herbal recipies in there from the Bulk Herb Store and other places too as well as lists of what different herbs are for etc.  But the thing I thought about more recently was this.  Whenever we have something wrong and use an herbal remedy I have been writing it down.  For example, my hubby just had a fall recently and we have been using ceyenne rub, BF&C, from Dr. Christopher, Hot Baths with Epsom Salt, Comfrey and Lavender.  I have been writing down what works, and what doesn't, what makes this condition better and what doesn't with the date.  I have also involved my teenage daughter and she is really enjoying the research and I thought when she is a mama I can copy the notebook and pass it on to her so she knows that goot works for fungal things, this works for that, this works for colds and has some practical experience there already. I may not be around at some point and thought this would be a great reference for her.  What do you gal's do?  Do you have some type of other system to use to pass this knowledge onto our children (daughter's especially).  I would love to hear any other suggestions too.

I had started a Home Management Binder (the idea was from hillbillyhousewife.com, I think).  I have tabs for Recipes, Schedules, Prayer, General Housekeeping, Homeschool, etc.  I started a tab for herbal remedies after I came upon WTM.  So far, that tab is empty because all of the info I've accumulated is still on my pc in my favorites tab and documents folder.  I've also realized that it's going to have to have its own notebook anyway.  I think I'll make it about healthy living in general, not just herbs.  Once I start it I'll organize it into better categories.  Then I'll order a bunch of ink from Dell and start printing.   Shocked
If you did it this way, what categories would you use...

If I was organized enough to actually make different sections at some point  Grin, Maybe by use of the herb i.e, anti-infalmmatory, anti-fungal, colds & flu, etc., or maybe salves, tintctures, infusions. Who knows, you could really get creative, if you had time to do that. It would really be a great resource for your family.

This is a fabulous idea!  I am a young wife that would love to have something like this, so at least if I keep my notes in order now I could pass this on to my daughter.  I am going to start one of these.  What are some of the other categories that people will put in?

I believe it's easiest to just start one. Don't think about all the categories and what not. Just get going.

Put pages you print in plastic lining and put in 3 ring binder.
If you buy a really big binder you'll soon decide what categories YOU need.

Then, you may  have to separate your subjects into different binders (as time and information builds).

Initially, I would start with:
Herbal recipes
List of websites/links
Record of use (recording how it was all used)

Then, as time goes on, I would divide the recipes into general support, women's health, and that sort of thing (using the table of contents from an herb book borrowed from the library).

That's just what I did yesterday!  I decided it was time to stop thinking about it and start doing.  I just copied off the recipes I use frequently.  For now, I'm dividing into cooking recipes/ideas, health/treatment ideas, and cleaning recipes.  As I use it more, I will know more how to sort it all out.  It feels great to start!

I too had all good intentions...but started at least by keeping a spiral notebook next to my computer. (I have a binder/recipe book started and created an herbal section at the back .) Getting the notebook next to the computer was a huge start....no organization to it ( maybe a 3-5 subject one would help) but at least " I know its in there somewhere!!" and I don't have a pile of little bits of paper everywhere.

Hi Y'all, I'm in the Flylady group and she encourages people to keep a Control Journal for your home she has lots of info on ideas of what to keep. I also make a sheet for everyone modified for each to carry in wallet/backpack. I put Family Medical Info at the top then each person's name ss#, insurance if they have it, DOB, then list names & ph # of Family, then Friends/Family that know my children and could take care of them in an emergency. I do it on MSWord table. I put on the back of the info sheet ph #;s for our pharmacy, all medical drs/dentists, vet, where I order groceries etc. I have several times had to run in the ER with asthmatic son & just handed them my info sheet as I went on through. They always comment how nice it is to have legible complete info all in one place. When the Dr asks where to ph in the prescrip I have the #. On my tots I leave off info & on my DH I supersize the font  Cheesy. Also in my control journal I have Grocery lists for each wks menu & I have lists that tell each childs size ht,wt, shoes, where & when I bought them, Another sheet for seasons, who was their coach for what sport. They ask how many seasons has your child played on some sign up sheets and with 2 seasons per yr x 4 tots I would never remember if it wasn't written down. Also who played what for what instrument for what season's recital. and last but not least what cake, gifts and theme who came for their birthday parties. All that said - my photos on are the computer and only # one has a "book". If I live long enough to be in a nursing home I'll have plenty to do! Hope that helps someone!, blessings, surfyoyo

I like to write recipes or ideas on 3x5 cards (I always have a stack in my desk) and keep them in a card file box.  It's easy to pull out the one you need and they can also be categorized with tabbed cards.  I also use a box with cards for the children's chores.  Each one has a tab with their name and a card for each job.  When they finish the job it gets refiled.  Works great! Another idea I had is to have a section for each family member to record health, illness details and what worked for different symptoms....we have 3 different ethnic groups represented in our family and I have found that my kids all respond differently to various treatments.

Found this pdf file that lists remedies for ailments, A-z tyypish.  If you ignore the cover graphic and something on witch stuff later on, it's a pretty interesting compilation of natural remedies...64 pages, I think!

http://uss.za.org/library/HERBAL%20APOTHECARY%20REMEDIES%20&%20RECIPES.pdf

Here's a sampling:

Quote
Expectorant #1 (Cough Syrup)[/u]
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
Sugar to cover

Put onion and garlic in a deep bowl. Cover with sugar, and let the mixture
stand for at least 1 hour. A syrupy juice will result. For dislodging congestion, this homemade expectorant works better than many over-the-counter cough medicines

Digestive Problems (tea)
1 oz. dandelion root
1 oz. dandelion leaves and stems
2/3 oz. fennel seeds
2/3 oz. peppermint leaves

Steep in 1 cup of water for about 10 minutes. Combined with other medicinal plants, dandelion helps stimulate bile production, promotes digestion and alleviates intestinal gas.

Eczema Remedies
Diet plays an important role in maintaining the health of the skin. Diet should supply all the nutrients needed to build health, namely, protein, carbohydrates, fats, essential fatty acids and all the essential vitamins and minerals. Such a diet will consist of liberal quantities of seeds, nuts and grains, vegetables and fruits, supplemented by special protective foods like milk, vegetable oils, yogurt, honey and yeast.

Nutrients play an important role in maintaining a healthy skin. Examples:
Your skin is unusually dry and rough. You have blackheads and whiteheads. You are probably lacking sufficient vitamin A. You could also be suffering from the deficiencies in iron, iodine and the B Vitamins. Adequate amounts of protein and vitamin C are also important.
The vitamins of the B group are important in producing beautiful skin.
Vitamin B1 aids skin health by helping to keep the circulation normal.
Vitamin B2 or riboflavin deficiency can lead to brown pigmentation, or liver
spots on the skin. These ugly spots usually disappear if generous amounts of vitamin B2 are given over a period of six months. Severe riboflavin deficiency can lead to oily skin and hair and small deposits of fat under the skin of the cheeks and forehead and behind the ears. More severe deficiency of riboflavin causes the skin under the nose and at the comers of the eyes and mouth to crack and become sore.
Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine deficiency can result in dermatitis or eczema.
Niacin deficiency can also cause an eczema type of skin eruption with brown pigmentation, largely on the face, forearms and legs.
Deficiency of pantothenic acid, para-aminobenzoic acid, and biotin: This also
leads to types of eczema. The symptoms will go away completely when these vitamins are generously added to the diet.
It is clear that Vitamin B plays a pivotal role in maintaining a healthy skin. So, diet that is rich in Vitamin B can go a long way in skin health. One of the important food in this connection is brewer's yeast. Even the person whose skin seems smooth and healthy usually notices improvement in texture and glow, a week after adding two or more tablespoons of brewer's yeast to the daily diet.

Persons with eczema should, for an entire month, take a tablespoon of yeast stirred into citrus juice or water after each meal, between meals, and before retiring. If the diet is adequate in all other respects, the eczema is usually cured in a month 's time.

Anemia and Pale Skin: Anemia results from lack of protein, iodine, calcium,
niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid, cobalt, copper, and iron. Take diet rich in Vitamin B. Folic acid and vitamin B12 are especially important.

Ive been working on my notebook. I have one section with remedies for problems such as burns, colds, pain, etc. I cut and paste the remedies I like best. So when the problem arises I have a notebook to read. It works great. I also have a section on each herb. It has been compiled from all the wisdom of this forum. Yeah! Slow, slow learning.

I am afeared that if the FDA has its way, we will begin to find it difficult to find the ingredients for making any of these herbal and home-based remedies. Let's hope the witch-hunt doesn't succeed!

Otherwise, start collecting stuff as quickly as you can. Save seeds!

I have been planning a similar thing for my learning journals.   Wink

I want to suggest that you shouldn't forget to add some things in your own handwriting and not all in computer font.  Maybe add handwritten comments to your recipes and concoctions.  This will make the notebooks more special for your children.  Just a thought.  Cheesy

This is REALLY Great....it is amazing how much free information is available on the web...Such a blessing.  I have two large binders actually.

One is for all of the awesome recipes that you all share, and the other is for all of the other homemaking/herbal remedies, nutritional information that I find.

So far it works really great!

Okay - I've been thinking about this for quite some time.  I first started all my research and investigating for our health a couple years ago.  I started out with the basics, and have moved into deeper issues such as prevention and even cancer research.  The problem is, I'm starting to have so much info in my head that I'm forgetting things I've already researched and having to go back to a book or one of these threads and re-read or whatever.

So - I'm wanting ideas on keeping the info organized.  I'm going to start writing down things that I need now or think I will need in the future.  I'm thinking about a binder with sections, or even an index card file.  I thought I could categorize like what different vitamins do for you, colds, flu, etc.  And after reading the book "Cancer - Step Outside the Box" I would like to include a section for cancer.

Does anyone already do something like this?  Or does anyone have more ideas on either how to keep them or what categories I should include?

P.S. - I'm not talking about household organization and chores, but health related only like I mentioned.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!  Certainly there has to be other women on here who are dealing with this a little! Roll Eyes

I've been thinking a lot about doing this as well.  My memory is swiss cheese after having kids.  Sometimes I have great recall, but I can't count on it.  So notebooks work great for me.  Plus, I like to think that the information can be passed down to my kids one day.

I've already started my notebook in Word documents on my computer.  I like the ease of copy/paste, so I've created a file on my hard drive called Herbs and Health.  Then, I create subfolders for different tops, and add documents to the folders as I research and take notes.

I like to organize my notebooks for the way that I would look for the information when I need it.  Since I already have a good reference book with herbs listed alphabetically, I would probably organize my notebook by malady:
baby
burns
colds and congestion
ear infections and problems
first aid/traumas (including items like nose bleeds and wound treatments)
flu and fevers
rashes and skin reactions,
etc..

I think I am going to start each section with general notes and tips on each topic, then list herbs/oils that are indicated for that malady, then follow up with recipes.

I have sort of been doing this when reading through threads here on WTM...I'll copy/paste good advice and recipes from the thread, and then save that page with the name of the thread.  Eventually, I'll print everything out for my notebook, but in the mean time I have easy access to the info from my computer.

This is similar to what I have done with recipes, and it's nice to have the backup copy.  I can easily share recipes, go in and add to or change things, etc.

I do make handwritten notes in ALL my books and notebooks as I go, so that I can remember what I did/when/how it turned out.  When topics overlap in my notebook, I'll write to the side of the divider page for example: "RASHES-see also baby, diaper rash cream recipe"

HTH!

I like the idea of doing it in a Word document so I can cut and paste, and I think I will print it out to put in a binder.

I think I will also have a page for references, books, etc. where I have found certain things.

I organize a lot of the info I get by saving the pages as " favorites" ...and creating folders for specific ailments, recipes for cleaners, kid issues, etc. I started a cookbook in a black binder with old fashioned page dividers , clear page covers which I could slide magazine pages into, or printed word docs, etc. That cookbook branched out into home remedies, etc so I have different color binders in the cabinet.
