  I am scared....family cancer????
« on: September 25, 2007, 12:25:57 PM » by Mama Bear
My SIL called last night to tell us that she is having a total hysterectomy today. She had been having extremely heavy bleeding during her periods for the last 8-9 months. Her dr recommended BC pill or a procedure...(nuvasure? not sure of name) it is the scrapping and then burning of uterus. Since she wanted no more children, she decided to do this. The Dr called her back in 2 weeks later and told her that they had found a cancerous polyp in her uterus during the procedure. He sent her to a cancer specialist and they recommended a hysterectomy. They said that if she had not done the procedure that in about 4 years she would  have found out that she had uterine cancer! So, my prayers are with her today during this hysterecomy...I keep thanking God for my uterus!...the other SIL (both are my husband's sisters) had breast cancer 5 years ago and ended up having a masectomy...this has me thinking.....2 sisters-cancer....should I be scared for my husband? Could it be a family thing? Neither of my husband's parents have had cancer, none of his grandparents either....I am a little bit frightened.

Gina, Sorry about your SIL. I will pray for her today. I understand being scared. It may turn out to be a blessing that you've had this brought to your attention so you can protect your family. I don't believe all diseases are as hereditary as most modern Dr's would have us believe. It does seem that we all have hereditary weaknesses that show up mostly due to our poor diets. I would look into what you could do with diet and supplements to protect your family from what appears to be a hereditary weakness.

I agree with tjmj- I think most diseases that get chalked up to heredity are perhaps due to poor choices in diet and deficiencies.  My grandmother and my mother both died from pancreatic cancer which is believed to be hereditary.  As I have uncovered the layers of what cancer really is, I have much hope that I can avoid getting it by properly caring for my body.  The fear I felt at first has faded as I have gained knowledge.  Keep reading, researching and asking questions- do all you can to stay healthy Smiley

Hello Mama Bear,

May the Lord help your SIL.

My dh's grandfather died of cancer, and his father died of cancer at the age of 60. Embarrassed  I know what you mean about being a little scared.

So, we try and keep dh's eating habits in tip top shape.  I worry a bit because he doesn't get to exercise, but we are trying to help him there, too.  He also needs to lose some weight.

I guess I do understand that dh's father used tobacco some.  Also, I believe his nutrition growing up was not as good as it could have been.  My dh has had a fairly healthy upbringing and living, although not perfect.  May the Lord help us have the wisdom (as the wives and mamas) to raise our families as healthy as possible, in peace, so that even if something like cancer hits, their bodies can be strong enough to fight it off.

Okay, thinking modern lifestyle here, ladies....I'm wondering since it is his sisters if could it be related to birth-control? Throwing hormones "out of whack" and making healthy cells susceptible to cancer?  Huh

Will pray for your SIL.  I to understand about the fear thing.  My brother died at 59 of colon cancer.  My Dad died of colon cancer also but he was 91.   They say this can be hereditary but I can see things in both of their lives that would have contributed to cancer and the weak intestines are definitely a family thing from way back.   I think it is good to be able to identify the weak area and use nutrition etc to strengthen that and trust that God will take care of the rest.
I'm not expert but these sound like they are hormone related cancers.

O.K., yeah, I agree that it could be due to birthcontrol with both sisters...both used birthcontrol for a number of years. SIL that had breast cancer devoloped VERY early...I mean, she was 12 when we married and already wore a C cup. That scares me about my own daughter...who, also developed very early (started her menses at age 10- 2 months before 11th birthday).
I try to make our diets better...but do confess that the diets could use a little more work. I really just don't know where to begin. My own diet wasn't really cleaned up till I started going to Weight Watchers. My children are huge sugar addicts...so, any info on where to start with this? This has really gotten me scared and I do want to protect my family.
Taste is an issue with the kids...the only way I can get 'em to drink water is to let them use the flavor packets made for water...unfortunatley, it contains aspartame...which i know is very bad....so I only let them have 1 a day...otherwise, they would prefer nothing to drink over plain water!!
Help.

(well, three out of the four links did not work so I removed them - I printed out these articles a while ago - so I only have one link to an article that is still valid.  But I can type in my highlighted portions of the articles if anyone wants them.  Sorry!)

I just typed these out from articles I have so I will check if these links are still correct.  These article really helped us to see that the genetic link with cancer makes no sense at all.  Years ago, my husbands family was one of 30 in the country being studied for cancer genes.  Scarey, I know, that his family has THAT much cancer (breast and prostate specifically) but anyway, he could have flown to DC all expenses paid and gotten tested for the "cancer gene".  We were the only ones who did not do it, b/c after looking things up and reading these articles, even a positive test could mean NOTHING.  So he did not participate even though his family got extremely upset and sent a very hateful email after we just tried explaining intelligently our reasoning.  They even wanted us to take at least our baby girl, who was a newborn, to get tested.  They were different then - they have changed  Smiley, but my point is, even an all expense paid trip and testing, we still saw no benefit whatsoever, b/c we believe there is no link.  If he had the gene, he could still never get it; if he didn't have the gene, he could still get it.  Taking ALL those articles as a whole, we came to believe that having the gene does not put one at greater risk whatsoever.  Anyway, I just wanted to reassure you about that.  We were scared when we got that call that his family was being studied, but were reassured when we did some research.  HTH!

I keep seeing and hearing of more and more younger ppl getting cancer now a days. I know that our genes  make it to where we are more likely to get this or that illness but it does not mean we have to get it. It would seem that our modern diets and lack of physical moving, compared to how life was for 1000s of years, is starting to negatively affect our health so that in time we end up getting the illnesses that our genes are geared towards getting.

My husbands mom died of cancer ( so did some of her family) when he was only age 5. Her death plunged my husband into years of abuse by his dad. His mother was a Christian nice lady so when she died all goodness and love in my husbands life went out the door. ( a long story that would make for a good TV mini series).

Lately I have felt the strong urge to find herbs that help one not get cancer. Herbs/foods I can find on my land or buy cheaply. My husband has agreed to take what I give him for this. Since we are a 1 income family we can not afford all those fancy high priced herbal pills made for fighting cancer so I have been looking into what plants that grow near me that I could use for my husband.

Here is what I have found so far ( sorry for the short list)

- clover tops
-burdock
-green tea
-milk thistle
-calcium
-poke root ( requires extreme caution and should only be used for serious cases)
-dandelion
-raspberry
-chicory

I have been harvesting the clover tops and drying them. Now that it is fall time I will harvest some dandelion root and burdock( I read where this time of year is best for harvesting those)

This may need another thread, but you asked - where to start???  It has taken us about 5 years now to get to a point where I can say that I am comfortable with the eating lifestyle that we have in place.  I am not so rigid that I never allow my children anything sweet, and some times are worse than others - traveling, etc....

I started with throwing out ALL refined flour.  I started baking bread and now if I don't bake, I buy organic bread from a small bakery at our health food store.  The price of that keeps me baking!   Smiley  If my children are craving a sweet, I would rather them have an organic chocolate bar sweetened with non-bleached organic sugar from the health food store than something sweet made with white flour.  So, that is their "sweet treat" sometimes.  That and dehydrated fruit, I think it is called "Just....whatever"  It is pretty pricey too, so it is a treat, but really seems to satisfy when they want something sweet, and there is nothing in it but the fruit.  The strawberries, blueberries, and cherries are their favorites.

Next, I started using only raw honey or raw agave to sweeten things at home - tea, muffins, etc....  We keep a very small container of raw sugar (non-bleached) to sprinkle a little on top of cinnamon toast, but otherwise we use agave in drinks and honey on p. butter sandwiches.

I also threw out all of our table salt and we use only "real salt" - I order it online from the place in Utah where it is produced and it is really not that expensive if you buy it in bulk.

I order coconut oil from moutainroseherbs.com in the gallon container and it is not too bad either in bulk.  I use that to saute veggies, make popcorn, eggs, french toast, anything I used to use butter or oil for.  We still use real butter on bread, etc...

I found that by staying home so they are not tempted with fast food, food at other people's homes, etc... I could switch their cravings pretty easily simply by not buying the junk and having it in the house.  Eventually, they will eat an apple when they are hungry instead of wanting chips or whatever it is they crave.  I still have one who is not a good eater, but he just eats more of the things he likes and doesn't get too much variety.  I wish he would eat more fruits and veggies, but I refuse to substitute that with junk.  He won't starve and he eats a lot of homeade bread, natural peanut butter, and raw milk.  He takes a couple of whole food fruit and veggie supplements and he rarely gets sick.

My younger children who don't really remember the eating habits before the "switch" would choose a piece of raw fruit over a cookie any day of the week.  I think it is all what they are used to.  I keep a pot of vegetable soup or chicken and kale soup mixed up and ready to be heated for lunch almost all the time.

I think part of the problem in our culture is that we eat entirely too much food, period.  The cost of organic is certainly high, but I find that the more really good, whole food my kids eat, the less hungry they are.  I don't allow them to snack all day long and truly they don't really eat all that much, yet they are all off the charts in height and none of them are "skinny" - none are overweight either, but they certainly look and act well nourished.  We try to eat mostly raw food during the day, except our soups, and then at night I usually cook chicken, hamburger about once or twice a month, or beans and rice.

It did not happen overnight of course, but now that we are on this "diet" we all really feel good.  They are rarely sick with just a typical cold or flu.  We struggle with some allergies in some of them that we are still working on, but it seems like they have pretty good immune systems.

I take some herbal supplements as well, because my mom did have breast cancer, so I stay on top of having hormone tests every few years to see what is out of whack for me, and I take red raspberry and evening primrose oil supplements and a natural progesterone cream to keep that balanced.  I feel good as well.

I am a worrier, so stuff like this can really freak me out, but the truth is, we are all in God's hands and as our world spirals more and more out of control, as it seems that it is -- I have to believe in faith that He is still on the throne and that this world is not our home anyway.  Please don't hear my say that this is easy for me to say, I could purely panic over every little ache and pain or bump if I let myself think too hard on it.  I just have to believe that by giving them the best lifestyle of low stress, good food, and lots of exercise and sunshine - I am doing my part and the outcome is totally up to God.  He loves them more than I do anyway.  Sorry, to "preach" I was actually talking to myself!  Wink

I watched an episode of NOVA recently that dealt with genetics and disease.  It was really interesting.  The bottom line is:  though we are influenced by genetics, certain chemicals turn genes on or off.  So, although identical twins have the same cancer gene, one twin will get it, but the other one will not.  This is highly influenced by our lifestyle.  It was really a relief to me, since my family has a huge history of skin cancer, as well as diabetes.  Basically, a healthy lifestyle leads to less disease, regardless of genetics.  Hope this helps!

Pondering this some more, Mama Bear. What about your husband's mom? Because I recall reading some where (my mind is sort of a melting pot of information... I remember the info but not always the source  Embarrassed ) that if the mother had used a form of birth control (not sure which) that the daughters would be more likely to develop cancers as well.  Anyone else know about this?

Just for your information, there is a test that is very reliable and can detect cancer at very early stages.  That way you have the best odds of treating it.  It's the AMAS test, and most doctors don't use it.  I read about it at drrons.com.

Yes, DH's mother used birth control. She has no health problems to speak of...however, DH's father has prostate cancer...obviously it isn't too bad, because they told him he didn't have to get any treatment until after the first of the year! That confuses  me, but I don't ask questions of them (KWIM?) My DH paints (houses) part time...this worries me too, because of the fumes he breathes in. DH is very open when I want him to take herbs (mostly for fertility) and if I could improve our overall diet...without losing the taste that my family is use to (I cook Paula Deen style)...they would probably all be open to it.
