  Breastfeeding Babies and their Diapers
« on: October 10, 2007, 09:12:56 AM » by mexmarr
I have 2 questions specifically pertaining to breastfeeding only babies.  They have that mustard like yellow poo-poo, and it is SO runny. I am having a problem keeping it from leaking out the back of the diaper.  I mean, I can be holding Elizabeth when she goes, and before I can get a new diaper, it is coming out the back.  Her diaper is neither too big nor too little.  Do you have any tips that will help prevent that?

I use disposibles.  I mostly use Walmart brand, and they have always worked  great, second only to Huggies.  Elizabeth has been using Huggies, though, since I had some coupons that made them about the same price as the others.  So they should be good diapers.

My second question is, how do you get that yellow stain out. Almost all of my dd's sleepers have yellow spots on the back.  That is one stain that I have never been able to get out, even if I try immediately (which I usually don't)  Any help would be appreciated.

well two things, I've never been impressed with wal-mart brand or huggies brand diapers (at least for boys, don't have experience yet with girls).  For me Luvs are and white cloud are decent, but Member's mark diapers from sam's are THE BEST! and they are very cheep if you can store them all.  but like I said my experience is with boys.  Another trick I've heard of is when your really concerned about not having a blow out to take one diaper of the next size up and double diaper.  It'll come up over the back enough to provide an extra layer of blocking for the poo.

Something I have found that works at least some on poop stains is as soon as I can get to the stain mix some Borax and water into a paste and apply it to the stain and let it sit.  Seems to work well and no color fading problems either.

This is currently a problem in our home too.  I never let the poo dry, or it will not come out.  If I am in a hurry I just throw the clothes in the sink with a little water until I have more time later.  It was recommended to me to use Clorox 2, I use the dye free kind.  This is the only time I use the Clorox 2 (it's not a bleach).  I wash the excess poo off, put a little Clorox 2 on and scrub the garmet together then toss into the wash.  This even worked with a white onsie the other day, and we had been traveling so it the stain was set it.
My cousin swore by Suave shampoo to remove her baby 'mustard' stains.

Babies R Us have their own store brand that is very good (IMHO)and very inexpensive. The beatout any other store brand I tried.

I'm glad you asked about the stains, it's something I wanted to know too.

I'll have to try the Borax (thanks Heather)!

i know you said you use disposable diapers but we have great luck getting out all sorts of stains on our cloth diapers with my homemade laundry soap and then hanging them on the line. they always come out much more bright white on the line

so maybe you could make a small batch of laundry soap for just this occasion. i make a powder version that is much easier than the one you have to cook:

1 bar ivory grated on a cheese grater (makes 2 cups soap flakes)
2 c. borax
2 c. baking soda
mix with a wire whisk

i put about 3 T or 4 if it is a huge load and set them on a pre-soak cycle in the washer. then i wash them with another 3 T of laundry soap and occasionally woolite if they are really funky. then like i said, i will hang them on the line for the best dry. i dont always hang them though, the dog loves to nab them and run off with them Wink i would imagine that this would work well on the mustard poos on t-shirts too.

Can I use homemade soap instead of Ivory.  It is a white soap made with beef tallow and lye.

Where can I get borax?

The things that work for me for the yellow stains- not letting it dry before treating it, soaking in Oxyclean, Biz or spray with Shout. Definitely the sooner the better.

I'll hafta try Borax sometime, though...

IMO, Borax leaves your diapers/clothes softer than oxy clean when used to soak. Also, here in MI, Borax is cheaper at Target. Not sure about other areas.
I don't know if you have access to someone who sells Meluluca (sp.?) but their prespot is great. It's pricey but if you only use on things you know are difficult to get out, it's worth it. I got boot oil out of my hubby's pants that was months old. Smiley

It seemed like I always had this problem with disposables right before moving them up to the next size. All of  a sudden, the diapers would quit holding the poo, and it would take me a while to realize that they needed to move up in size. I used either Huggies or the Walmart brand also. Back then, I would set the stained clothes aside until I had a bucket full, then I would soak them in oxyclean. Sometimes it took a few days, but they usually mostly came out. When I started cloth diapering though, I read to put poop stained diapers in the sun. That worked wonders, so I did that for the poop stained clothes. It works great, and didn't seem to fade the clothes. So I would just wash the clothes and then hang them in the sun. The stain should be out in a couple hours.  Smiley And maybe try the next size up. Hope that helps.

Soak the stained item in cold water as soon as possible, then launder as usual.  This seemed to work for most all of our breastmilk poop stains.

Oh, I forgot to add this to my post. Be careful when using Oxyclean, it can cause holes in clothing if let on to long. My experience with this is mainly with the spray on stuff. I still use caution when using the powder.

I second moving up a size avoid blowouts. Whenever we started having them getting a size bigger seemed to solve the problem. Also baby's position can help, seems like laying them flat on their back when you notice they are going is better. I think anytime the boys went while in the carseat or jonnyjump up type of thing it always went right up the back.

We never had a problem getting the stains out as long as I rinsed right away and didn't let it dry. Which someone has already said! Course once they hit that 4 or 5 month age where they dont go very often I don't know if there is anyway to avoid blowout when it does come!  Cheesy

I've had success with a plain ivory soap bar rubbed on the stain while it's still wet and rinsed out.  Then Spray and Wash on top of that.

I've also used dish detergent.  Joy works pretty well.

If it's been on there awhile, try making a paste of Tide and water and letting it sit on the stain for a couple of days.  Then spray with Spray-n-Wash and wash it in the machine.

I have tried many different things that have worked okay. But I have found one thing that has taken every kind of stain out I have ever had with a 3-year-old and breastfed infant, and it is a certain type of "Spray-n-Wash" called "Duel power". It has the two different liquids that blend together right before it squirts out. I use it ALL the time and and it works perfectly. Even if the stain has been set in through the dryer multiple times...it will still get it out. You do have to watch it though because it has taken the color out of two things on me...but it was only when I put it on and then forgot about it for hours or days, even then that was two items out of hundreds of uses (unfortunately, one of them was my couch cushion). So I keep using it and count my losses against how many items it has saved from stains Smiley Otherwise I just throw it in the washer right away and that usually takes care of it. Good Luck!!

I am wondering if sun bleaching would work for this stain.  I have many on sleepers and onsies, too, and never even thought to try, although it works great on my cloth diapers.

Blessedmommy,  i am curious about your homemade laundry soap with cloth diapers.  I have switched to real soap on all of our laundry except diapers.  I currently use Charlie's soap (really detergent) and it works so well that i am afraid to switch.  Don't want to mess up a good thing, ruin my diapers or worse yet, give my  babe a sore bottom!  Have you had any trouble using your soap with your cloth diapers?  Does it rinse completely clean?

not sure if anyone said this yet, since I haven't read all the answers...but I would just rub liquid hand soap or dish detergent on the area right after i took it off my daughter and than wash whenever...this worked for me. My daughter was a BIG pooper...I think she pooped all over me wayyyy ymore than my son peed all over me. I'd open her diaper and she'd squirt it out all over the place....Plus she'd just overflow her diaper ALL THE TIME as well...

oh yes, they have done wonderfully on the soap i make. i have used both mine and all free and clear. i really was glad when the all was gone so i could use my soap again. the all was a gift, a very nice gift, but i was happy to make my own again. all the added chemicals really concern me. plus the price of detergent vs how much it costs me to make mine justifies it in my book.

we have extremely hard water, and the soap has been great with that too. i think the sun bleaching works great for all things. i wish i used it more, maybe after the baby comes. hope you have luck with my soap, feel free to pm me if you have any questions. the baby should be here within a few days and i am not sure how well i will be at getting on the boards  Smiley

Try enzyme cleaner.  There's a brand specifically for baby stains in the baby isle and there's another type in the pet section that probably works better called OUT!.  You can also another brand that's comparable at Petco.

Just a note about the cheap diapers.  Parent's Choice are even cheaper than Walmart (WhiteCloud) brand and they are just as good in my opinion.  I was always a big Huggies fan until I discovered White Cloud and then switched to Parent's Choice and have never switched back ($10 for the Jumbo pack).

I have a question about my daughter's dirty diapers. I didn't breastfeed my son so his diapers were totally different. Anyways, she just turned 4 months and when she poops it's very thick....the consistency of sour cream (sorry for the analogy all of you sour cream lovers. ) And it smells SOOOOO strong. Not like poo at all...like hormones or something. Is that normal for a little girl and why is it so thick. When she was 1-2 months it was all runny and seedy like it should be.

My first thought would be that she needs more fluid.  Has your milk production gone down, even a wee bit?  She may not be getting enough front milk, which is thinner.  Are you drinking about 3-4 quarts of water or herbal teas per day?  That may help with this.

Blessings in figuring this out,
Cara

Did you start any form of solids?

It does sound like she needs to be getting more fluids. Try increasing your intake, just as cecac suggested, but also let her nurse more often and switch sides. If she has finished on one side, try the other, then back to the first, and so forth until she is full and refuses to take more. After 2-3 days your milk will increase a little and she will have more foremilk and that will probably make her bm's softer. HTH

Thanks ladies! I do know that I've slacked off the fluids a little and haven't been drinking very much water lately. I guess she eats about every 3 hours but when she eats she only eats for about 8 minutes total...if not less. She's gained a ton of milk. One thing though, I did pump a couple weeks ago ...about four ounces. When it seperated about 75 percent of it was super thick and fatty. It almost looked like yogurt!
