I've always read to make it like you would normally make a tincture. Fill a quart jar 1/3 full of cherry bark, then fill the rest of the way up with Southern Comfort liquor (because it's a sweet liquor), and you can add honey to sweeten it as well. Let it set in a cool, dark place for two weeks shaking 1-2 times a day. Then you have cough syrup. HTH!

I also tincture it like other herbs.  I put the bark in a mason jar, cover with vodka (though the Southern Comfort does sound like a good choice, too) and let it sit for 2 weeks at least.  I shake it several times a day.  I then strain and bottle it.
To use I take the tincture and then mix it by the spoonful with some honey when I am ready to use it.

Mine is also purchased.  We've been using this for years for the kids and really like it.  It's "Herbs for Kids - Cherry Bark Blend".
Ingredients:  Thyme leaf, Cherry Bark, Mullien Leaf, Peppermint leaf, Orange Peel, Hops strobiles, Horehound herb, Pluerisy root and Oregon grape root.

Is it Honey Gardens wild cherry syrup? Does it work good for respiratory too, like things besides coughing, croup, ect?

I got this recipe fromwww.fromfieldsandgardens.com.

Here is a very simple and mild cough syrup that tastes
yummy and will work gently.  It is tasty and soothing to
sore, scratchy throats.

Homemade Cherry Cough Syrup
2 cups cherries
1 cup water or herbal tea
1 whole lemon, sliced
2 cups honey
Simmer this mixture on the stove on low heat for 30
minutes.  Strain to remove cherry pits, lemon slices and
seeds.  If you are using an herbal tea, I suggest one that
contains wild cherry bark, elder berries or flowers, or
licorice.

For more easy herbal recipes like this one, check out the
new e-book, "The Kitchen Apothecary".  Go to
www.fromfieldsandgardens.com/ebooks for more information!

I haven't tried it.

Fill a small jar about 1/3 full of cherry bark.  Fill jar to top with vodka.  Tincture for 3-4 weeks.

As needed spoon out 1 part cherry tincture and add 1 part raw honey.  For extra help with congestion, add 1 part mullein tincture (made same way) and one additional part honey.

For adults, take 1 T as needed for coughs/congestion.
For children take 1 tsp as needed for coughs/congestion.

Do you guys use dry or fresh bark? I just found out I have a tree in my yard! I'd like to make a tincture and mix part of it with the BHS blend of immune boost.

I made mine with bark that I had freshly gathered.
It worked so well last winter at our house.  I didn't combine it with anything else and it kicked my cough right away.

I've thought about making this with mullein (since it grows wild in my back yard), but how much mullein should I use, and what is the shelf life using southern comfort?

I made mine with dried from BHS.  I didn't add anything to mine either.  It worked wonders!

This year I may try fresh, as BIL has a row of trees on his new farm.

I'd say that using mullein would be great!  As far as how much, depending on what else you are using, maybe 3 wild cherry bark:1 mullein would be good...maybe more.  I really don't think it matters!  As far as I know, both ingredients are safe to the max.

I don't know what southern comfort is, but if it is alcohol trust it to have a l-o-n-g shelf life.  For comparison, vodka (80 proof or 40% alcohol content) longer than it would take you to use what you make.  (At least in our family!  Cheesy)  Make sense?

Thank you =-)  I was actually told that cherry bark can cause stomach cramps if too much is given.

I make the cherry bark, elderberry and mullein tinctures separately and then add them together as needed for  various symptoms as needed.  I then an equal amount of honey to total tincture mixture and serve in doses of 1 tsp for small persons and 1 T for big persons.  Still tastes bad (reminds me of off brand robitussin) but not so bad that it isn't worth it for the symptoms.

Hello, All --

I made some wild cherry bark and Kentucky bourbon (straight -- no water added).  I see that several of you have recommended 1 t. for children.  My oldest is 3 1/2 and weighs 40 lbs.  Is 1 t. too much?  Also, how often do I give this?
(My husband is concerned about the alcohol content...says we don't need some little drunks staggering around here!)  Shocked)

Thank you!

I give a tsp but it's diluted with honey.  If you're going to give it straight, I would give less.  My kids are 35-45 lbs.

So I literally go out and peel some of the bark off the wild cherry tree and use it?

Is there any time of the year that is best to do that? Could I do it now once the snow and ice storm melts away some?

Fall is best, BJ.  Start scoping some stands out now.  Smiley  The inner bark is what you want.

WOW the inner bark of my wild black cherries smells wonderful. My daughter and I was outside literally sniffing the chuncks we peeled off.

I dont have any honey at the time and I dont think APC would be strong enough to pull the medicine out of a bark is it?

Anyways it is about ready to go into some vodka with some yarrow.

QUESTIONS:

-Can you use the leaves? There are mixed messaages on that.

-does it have to be the inner bark? Can it also be twigs broke off and not stipped?

-why does it have to be harvested in the late summer/early fall?

-about how much can one strip from a tree without seriously hurting it or killing it off?

I hacked and peeled about 12 inch sections off each tree after I took the potato chip bark off 1st.

BJ....
I usually just tincture mine in vodka and it works great!
I haven't used the leaves, but I'm not sure they contain the good chemicals/properties that are found in the bark, and carry more of the 'bad' properties that are found in the tree (namely a cyanide derivative)....  So you could use them, but I wouldn't.
THe bark you typically want is the red-colored stuff.  If your twigs are in that range I would use them.
The good properties of the bark are at their highest in autumn.
If your tree was decent sized it should be alright to take a larger sample.  You can also go to the larger branches as well.

I didnt see any red coloring. I hacked from the trunck itself. The inner bark was yellow and white with an organgish redish tinge thrown in there too.

I get nervouse about it sometimes because the pics I see online show different looking barks with very conflicting reports of how to use it.

It maybe a different variety than what I get (you said it was a wild black cherry) and mine is just wild cherry.  The bark I found was pretty much like I had read, but there is a very distinctive smell to it as well.
My trees have grey, papery outer bark and reddish inner bark.
If you've got an underbark with some orange and it has that 'smell' I would probably try it.... but that's just me.

Makingchanges--
Thank you.  I made this tonight, and it's very tasty.  Smiley

I used a decoction of Wild Cherry Bark for the tea, and I ended up blending it gently in the Vita-Mix after simmering it b/c the cherries were still intact [I had frozen the cherries in September.].

I got this recipe from www.fromfieldsandgardens.com.

Here is a very simple and mild cough syrup that tastes
yummy and will work gently.  It is tasty and soothing to
sore, scratchy throats.

Homemade Cherry Cough Syrup
2 cups cherries
1 cup water or herbal tea
1 whole lemon, sliced
2 cups honey
Simmer this mixture on the stove on low heat for 30
minutes.  Strain to remove cherry pits, lemon slices and
seeds.  If you are using an herbal tea, I suggest one that
contains wild cherry bark, elder berries or flowers, or

I'm also doing this, w/ 1 part Slippery Elm added:
Wild Cherry Cough Syrup
Glycerite

2 Wild Cherry Bark
1 Elderberries
1 Licorice
1 Yarrow

Put herbs in mason jar
Pour hot water to moisten
Fill jar with glycerine
Heat on LOW in crock pot for 3 - 4 days.
Thanks, Esposita!   Kiss

I recently made a simple cough syrup with licorice root and lobelia. I made decoction and added it to honey so we could use it immediately.

I added a half cup of the herbs, one cup water, then simmered until reduced by half. Then I added it to my measuring cup and added honey until I had about a cup and a half of syrup. I keep it in the fridge and take it as needed. I am sure you could use this method with wild cherry bark as well. My amounts are approximate. I didn't follow a recipe but just did it. Worked pretty good, I still coughed but it didn't hurt anymore and felt more productive.
