  sleep teas and tinctures
« on: October 21, 2007, 12:48:35 AM » by twitterpated4hubby
I have no idea where to put this and i hope there isn't another topic on the subject already. I searched and came up with nothing.

I'm looking to buy some sleep tea and i need to know what is the best one to get that really works. There is sweet sleep tea and there is another one called snooze tea or something right? Can someone tell me what your experience is with these?

What I have always used with good success is the Yogi brand bedtime tea.  It is a blend of valerian,  passion flower, skullcap and several other herbs.

Here is the ingredient for my calming tincture:

Valerian, Hops, passion flower, alfalfa, catnip, oatstraw, peppermint

I am assuming it would make a good tea without the valerian  and hops- those too are too bitter.

My friend told me that a catnip tincture puts her to sleep if she is already tired but cant fall asleep.

Hi there,

I have an amazing story about the Sleep Tight tea from Bulk Herb Store. My mom suffers from an EXTREME case of insomnia. She has tried EVERYTHING, but nothing worked. I gave her some of this tea and she started drinking it every night, brewing it quite strong. She told me that while it does not cure her insomnia (her's is an extreme case), she told me that it really helps her sleep through the night! She used to wake up every hour and have trouble falling back asleep, but now she gets 7 hours instead of the usual 2-3.

She still has trouble falling asleep when she first goes to bed, but once she does, she is sleeping fine. Wow, I had doubts whether the Sleep Tight tea would work, but it seems to be helping her. Funny how herbs do the trick when common medicine does nothing!

For myself I love this tea. Its really calming and when I drink it before bedtime, I conk out. Just a note that you might want to steep it for a long time. I just leave the herbs in my cup and drink it straight without removing them.

Hope this helps.  Smiley

Bumping an old thread for help w/ a sleep tincture.   Grin

I plan to make one tonight, for use w/ young children.  Any comments on their herbs that have been listed?

I'm planning chamomile, lemon balm, catmint, and passionflower, but also have hops, alfalfa, peppermint, and valerian.

I also have a vodka-based Skullcap tincture that I could blend in for older ones.

Yooper, I am making a sleepy glycerite today.

2 parts Chamomile
2 parts Catnip
1 part Lemon Balm
1 part Peppermint

I have chili simmering in the crockpot on LOW so I just set my 1/2 pint jar(s) down in the chili for now, then I will add water later and do it for 42 hours+ on low simmer.  Doing the Relaxing glycerite on Keep Warm did not yield a very strong glycerite.  It was weak, and I also did not leave it in crockpot long enough. 2-3 days is hard to wait till the glycerites get done!

I needed something for my baby to help her sleep. She is 1 now, but thinks she has to have 2 bottles during the night (16 oz of milk or so) and I need something to help her wean off of it. I though maybe these herbs would be very mild and safe for a small child!

HA!  That's why I'm doing it--for my 18 month old.  Cheesy

Rikki uses straight Valerian when needed and she loves how it works.  I need to read a bit more to be comfortable with it, but I may use it.  The store was out of Chamomile, but I have a strong Chamomile (and catmint/peppermint) tincture almost ready, so I can blend later, right?  Wink

Daisey--
Those *are* herbs that can lower blood pressure, but not the 1st ones traditionally suggested.  Huh  Are you OK?

Yes, thank you.  I took it one night to help me sleep and I was already tired but thought I might not sleep well..........sometimes I don't if I am over  tired.   Anyway, during the night and the next morning I was so dizzy I could hardly stand up.   I also have low blood pressure to begin with but I never really thought the herbs would do that.   Guess I will be more careful in the future.
Thanks

Daisey--I'm still not totally convinced that's what did it, but it's possible.   Undecided

I was going through old notes and found Shoshanna's BHS article from '03 on Sleepytime Tea:

1 part Passionflower--calms the busy mind
1 part Chamomile Flower--relaxes/calms, and has a sweet/mellow flavor
1 part Oat Straw--(watch those dreams!)   Roll Eyes
1 part Peppermint--full-bodied flavor, aids digestion, and relaxes the smooth muscles, bringing overall relaxation.

The BHS currently lists the 4 I was planning for a Sleep tincture:

Passionflower
Chamomile
Lemon balm
Catmint

HEY!

There's a snooze tincture listed...http://www.bulkherbstore.com/Snooze-Tincture:

Lemon balm
Catnip
Chamomile flower
Passionflower
Oatstraw
Hops

and noted:

Quote
The premix does NOT include valerian root because it is can be too strong for small children. If you are making this tincture for adults, purchase valerian herb separately and add to the pre-mix. Hops herb tastes BAD, so this mix is not as good as a tea.

Now that is a helpful article right about now.  Grin  I'm filling my jar.   Cheesy

I can add the alfalfa...and oat straw...lemon balm works for a peppermint sub here, and I'll try a little Hops.

When do you start using Valerian w/ children?  Is an 18 month old a baby?  I don't think so...maybe I'll try this 1st and see.  Wink

Thank you!   Kiss

Yooper, Im not sure about the Valerian.  I know I have used Valerian Super Calm (herbs for kids brand) on my children and it says for over 1 year old. Valerian can be a stimulant for some children though!
 http://www.iherb.com/Herbs-for-Kids-Valerian-Super-Calm-2-fl-oz-59-ml/6427?at=0

Here is an article too
http://herbsforkids.com/parenteducation_display.asp?nid=13

Quote
1. Herbal support for kids using a chamomile daytime blend and Valerian nighttime blend help support the nervous system so kids can stay focused and calm. These herbs, along with a catnip and skullcap extract help to bring balance to nervous or anxious children, calm hyper-energized activities and promote restful sleep so important to growing bodies

Let us know how it works! Are you doing a glycerite or a tincture?  I have trouble with knowing how long to do my glycerite, as I have burned one before!
