Hey RunAmok...haven't done very well this week.  Hubby was home, so I'll just blame it on him...of course, I don't remember him shoving Easter chocolate down my throat!!  Oh well...I'll do better!!  I know I feel so much better when I'm eating this way.

RunAmok checkin' in!   Cheesy  Well, I haven't been "perfect" either this week - lots of unexpected "stuff" going on, so I fudged a couple times more than I should have.  I also wasn't going to weigh right now, cuz am retaining water...

But, curiosity got the best of me.  Even at this, I am down a little over 5 pounds from 2 weeks ago!  <little dance>

Course, I have a Looooooong way to go -- but this is a good start!  Also will encourage me to eat better, as I don't want to go backwards now that I am seeing some results!   Wink

Day 18 for me...

I finally got the original CAD book from the library and just finished reading it. I definitely learned a lot about why this way of life works, and why it is important to stick with it!

My favorite concept is that of eating low carb 23 hours a day... I had been doing the CALP plan of large low carb salad, 1/3 plate of protein, 1/3 plate of low carb veggie, and 1/3 plate of carbohydrates, but I was finding myself eating HUGE portions of vegetables and proteins so I could have a reasonable size portion of carbohydrates. Since I don't want to train my stomach to be accustomed to huge volumes of any types of food, and since I already liked and ate  large variety of veggies with my meals (even before CAD) I've decided to eat a balanced meal of whatever I want, sticking strictly to the 60 minute time limit. I've done this for 2 days now and am much happier with it! My RM saturday included venison steak, 1/4 cup sweet corn (high carb veg) 3/4 c. broccoli (high carb veg) a few bites of baked potato with butter, and a generous serving of homemade apple-raisin crisp drizzled with cream. It was amazing! Delectable! And I was satisfied on many many levels! (And not over-full)

I am more convinced than ever that I need to be sensitive to portion sizes, no extra snacking (even on low-carb foods), and really sticking to the list of low carb foods for my two CM and my optional (only once a day if I need it) CM snack. Eating carbs during the day can seem convenient, even allowable but it is SO counterproductive.

The benefit I see to CAD is this: by eating low carb 23 consecutive hours a day we don't even start the vicious cycle of cravings and over-producing insulin. We are setting ourselves up for success by feeding our bodies healthy proteins, fats, and low-carb vegetables which nourish our bodies, give us something satisfying to eat, and we can eat from when we're hungry until we're satiated with those foods. We're setting ourselves up for success by eating foods that will keep us full for awhile, making it easier (not easy, but easier) to break the habit of snacking between meals. We can choose to practice over and over telling ourselves "no" and "wait" and "okay, now is the time to enjoy this food" which builds our own confidence levels, training ourselves.

While I don't really want to think of doing anything (other than serving God and being married) the rest of my life, I am confident that I could do this on a low budget, while pregnant, on vacation, while sick, I can cook with this and not demand that the others in my household go low-carb - I can eat tuna salad and celery, they can have sandwiches with bread, I can eat a regular meal each day with them, including dessert. I can adjust and accomodate to changing schedules, changing menus, changing seasons, and changing demands.

I do not think this way of eating is for everyone - but it makes so much sense for me and the way I've always lived... I can't wait to see where I am 3 weeks from now!  Grin

I haven't been "perfect", but am doing pretty well, overall.  Remember those pants I bought - the ones that were 2 sizes too small!? - Well, I can get them on AND buttoned too!   Shocked  They are still a tight squeeze - but wearable -- and my husband even said "WOW, I really like those pants on you!"

(So what if I can't breathe??  My husband's admiration is worth it!)  <grin>

Anyway, I did have a couple days where I was fouled up earlier this week - ate an all-carb breakfast, and kind of scared myself with the hypoglycemia later that morning -- REALLY felt sick, shaky, lightheaded... it was awful and because I wasn't eating right, it continued that day and part of the next.  I know better, but...   Roll Eyes

So, back on track and feeling good!  I love not feeling bloated!!   Grin

Day 28

I have been doing CAD for 4 full weeks now and have lost a solid 8 probably more like 10 lbs.

I usually have 3 fried eggs with cheese for breakfast, along with 400 mg GTF Chromium, and coffee with about 2 ounces of half and half. I'm pretty careful to drink the coffee within 15 minutes, but I have lost track of time and gone about 20.

Lunch has varied between various proteins and veggies... I stay very low carb though - only what's allowed.

No snacks really, not really hungry for them either.

Dinner is whatever I want but it is entirely consumed within 60 minutes, and it is the same time frame (evening meal) every day. I've eaten mashed potatoes and gravy, ice cream, cookies, etc. And healthy food.

I haven't been exercising much on purpose, but I own my own cleaning business and did intensive cleaning for 16 hours this week so I guess that counts.  Grin Grin Grin

I feel healthier, more in control, and able to skip meals if need be. I can also clean for more than 2 hours without being starving. It is usually 4-6 hours from my last meal before I get hungry.

I like it.  Smiley

Just checking in to see if anyone is still eating this way, or if anyone might be just getting started?

My computer has been down quite awhile, and without checking in here and being consistant, I kind of lost my forward momentum for a bit.  <frown>  As of last month, I still needed to lose a lot of weight... so I got serious and have lost a little over 12 pounds in the last 5.5 weeks.

I am figuring another 20-ish pounds and I should be pretty close to where I want to be!  I just need to keep doing what I am doing and not get sidetracked, or too confident!!   Grin

Anyway, just curious how everyone is doing?

I am... I've been VERY consistant, except for one week when we were camping and being tourists, but when we were home I jumped right back in again! (gained 1.5 lbs, lost that the next week)

I've lost 20 lbs in the last 4 months! After a quicker weight loss the first two weeks, I'm at a steady 1lb/week weight loss. Nothing big or spectacular, but it's been almost effortless...

It's a good thing!

hi gals! since i got pregnant i have really been struggling with yeast, started on Threelac without diet changes and it wasn't doing anything that i could tell.  so i went to eating this way and it keeps me from having problems throughout the day.  i have yet to figure out what to eat for breakfast, instead of eggs.  not crazy about plain sausage, but i'm allergic to eggs and beef among other things.  the only NON plan thing i allow myself is a grapefruit.  i had been trying a diet i started a thread about which my husband was rather effortlessly losing weight on.  it was "Great Taste No Pain".  it has helped lots of people with Chron's, Diverticulitus, etc.  but  wasn't helping me.   Cry  i kind of liked it, cuz being allergic to dairy, beef and eggs, it seems i fall back on eating a bunch of carbs.  so i thought if i ate them as she said, apart from protein, that it would work.  no such luck.  the only thing it did, was solve my chronic constipation and i've noticed since i laid off the shredded wheat with rice milk for breakfast, i'm not so regular.  but i couldn't live with the other problems it created.  anyway, i will be reading through to see what is for breakfast and lunch!  lunch is right now a huge salad. good luck to ya'll!

JoyChild!   Shocked  20 POUNDS!!!!  That is AWESOME!!!!  I am going to "keep on, keepin' on" as well!  Another 20 pounds loss, and I won't be able recognize myself in the mirror anymore!   Grin

4MyHoonie,
For breakfast, you could try:
Ground turkey, fish fillet, chicken, lamb, sardines (I know, that may not sound good for breakfast, but it is a great filler!!) or any type of wild game...  If you are not opposed to pork products, there is ham, bacon, pork chops, pork roast.  You can accompany these with a bit of salad, dressing, mustard, mayo, etc -- as long as they are pretty much carb-free.  (I won't use Ketchup anymore).

For my salads, I always add some sort of meat now - to balance my body's reaction to the few carbs.

As to being "regular", I seem to do fine, as long as I eat the large salad with my dinner (reward meal).  If I skip the salad, "things" are a little slow.   Wink  I use a natural colon cleanse (with breaks between) to keep myself feeling better as well.

hey thanks for the ideas.......i'm really having a hard time with the whole "meat only" for breakfast.  it just sounds wholly unappetizing and unappealing.  i don't know how you girls are doing it.  i'm really more of an eggs and toast girl.......just having a hard time converting.  i'd actually rather skip breakfast........which i just might have to do.  or just eat almonds.  i can also tell i feel better on less meat, cheese, etc. and more alkalizing veggies than anything else.  well, i will keep checking in case there is a miracle and something gets invented i can eat!   Roll Eyes Grin

It is interesting that you are craving eggs/toast, when you are allergic to eggs.

I think you have a bit of a different situation than most of us on this thread anyway though, because I don't think you are changing the way you eat to lose weight, but more because of the yeast issues - right?  This definitely helps with yeast, if a person is careful with what they eat for their reward meal - but not if they just randomly eat "whatever" for their actual reward goodie.

As to breakfast "meats"; For myself, eating meat only/eggs only, or a combination of the two is no longer a problem, because when I finally do eat breakfast, it is because I am actually hungry - not because I am "craving" something.

Basically, I am eating breakfast/lunch to serve a purpose - It simply fills my hungry tummy and gives me more energy to accomplish my daily tasks; it does not serve as a "fast" pick-me-up, followed by an energy crash.  It does not (necessarily) please my taste buds.  I am not eating to fill an "emotional" void.  These were things I have nearly always done - and they were bad for me.

Do I enjoy the taste of toast??  Yeppers!  But... Is randomly eating whatever tastes "good" to me actually healthy for me?  No.  My reaction to eating carbs "whenever" has proven that with a horrible, bloated feeling, yeast, bad skin, irritability, PMS, and weight gain.  WOW!  "Stop this ride, I wanna get off!!!"   Grin

In contrast, following CAD has helped me lose 13.5 pounds since June 24! I no longer feel "bloated" (not just "fat", but the "bloated", paunchy stomach thing is going away), my skin has cleared up for both "cycles", NO really noticable PMS, no migraine for either "cycle", and I am no longer easily irritated.  I have tons more energy, and have ridden my bike 10 miles in the last week, gone rafting down the river, etc!

Now, if I were really wanting a slice (or two!) of toast during my reward meal, then as long as my meal was properly balanced, that is no problem - but I think I have only had a couple slices since I started this again, as I am not really craving it like I used to.

Whatever way you decide you should be eating -- I would not recommend "skipping" breakfast regularly, as that really isn't healthy.  For all the tasks you have set out each day, you really need a steady energy -- and that, typically, comes from a lower-carb, higher protein way of eating.

yeah, i tend to agree, with the reasons behind eating this way.  i really enjoy eating eggs and toast because i can go til lunch without hunger/snacks.  it keeps me full til then, whereas anything else (all those healthy carbs the health experts say to eat) i am starving in 2 hours or less.  maybe i will do some kind of veggie stir fry with tofu.  i don't eat it now, but it may be an option since meat really binds me up.  well, i will let ya'll back to the original reason for this thread!  thanks.  Roll Eyes

Lost 6.5 pounds the first 7 days
« Reply #466 on: August 13, 2009, 10:29:08 AM » by rainygladness
Hey everyone  Smiley I started eating this way on 8/3/09.  So this is day 10 for me. So far, it's been working well. I lost 6.5 pounds the first 7 days.  Grin  My husband was so excited he decided to do this with me.  He needs to drop a few pounds too, but mostly he wanted me to have a buddy. He's the best! I don't know if I would have the strength to do this all by myself long term. But knowing he's doing with me makes all the difference in the world to me.

We're away from home on my husband's business trip right now and so I'll be doing this out of a hotel which could be a little challenging. Our hotel room has a kitchenette, tho. So far so good. I cook us eggs, cheese, meat and greens in the morning, and make us a salad for lunch (dh takes his to work) and then we get to eat whatever we want for dinner.  We keep it balanced, but wow is it great to eat dessert without guilt.

Ironically enough, the confinement of the rules is actually pretty liberating.  Isn't that weird? They are taming me in areas I didn't know I needed taming which makes me feel in control.  Cheesy  I would rather eat this way because I CHOOSE to, than because I HAVE to, due to diabetes or something, ya know?

I didn't bring a scale so the daily weighing will have to wait.  We won't be back home to mid October so I will have to judge my progress by how my clothes are fitting.

One thing I still don't understand is about the coffee with cream thing.  Can anyone explain how that works?  I know we have to drink it in 15 minutes and only have 2 oz. of milk/cream in it, but do you have to drink it with your breakfast.
How many cups of coffee with cream can you have per day?
Are you ever alowed to have cream in your coffee later in the day?
What exactly are the coffee rules?
Thanks!

I completely agree!  I rarely have any questions about what is "ok", or not.  I can just eat to "full" and feel content.   Grin

COFFEE QUESTION
I don't usually drink coffee - it makes me jumpy and irritable... and makes me crave carbs something fierce.  However...

Quote from: The Carbohydrate Addict's Healthy Heart Program - page 172
Your choices for breakfast are many.  You can decide to skip breakfast (you may find you really don't want it!) or have only a cup of coffee or tea (with milk or cream).*  If you prefer to eat a small breakfast or a full meal in the morning, you can choose from any of the low-carbohyrdrate foods on pages 165-169.  (....snip....)

* We have found that including milk or cream in one cup of coffee or tea outside Reward Meal times can be allowed.  Be sure to finish the beverage within fifteen minutes.  Do not use nondarily creamer.  Coffee or tea without lightener can be enjoyed at any time.

REMEMBER:
(because most folks want sweetener in their coffee!)  ONLY use sugar during your reward meal, and consume all of it within 1 hour of the start of your meal.  Artificial sweeteners should be avoided entirely!!  (I am guessing that stevia would be fine to add to your coffee though - I ususally drink plain tea, but sometimes add stevia, without any noticable changes.)

Progress:
This is the beginning of week 7 for me (this time around... Roll Eyes).  I am down 15 pounds!!!  I did hit a small plateau this last week, but realized I was fudging a bit on my dinner schedule, so had to tweak a few things to get back on track.

Anyway, glad you started!!  Doesn't it feel good to see those pounds coming off??

That is SO great, run amok!  Cheesy  That's over 2 lbs a week --very steady progress!

It really does.  I am getting into the groove of this woe and I'm actually starting to visualize myself thin again. I've stuck to it 100% which is the first time I have EVER not cheated on a diet.  It must be that reward meal - it makes all the difference! Love that!

Just wanted to drop in and say I am still losing weight - more slowly now, but I have had a few days in the last few weeks that I slightly "cheated" and mixed up my reward meal times (and a couple times, I had 2 RM in a day).   Roll Eyes

Anyway, all my regular clothes are too big now.  I have lost just under 20lbs, so... YAAAAAAY!!  I still want to lose around 20 more, but this week am content to lose slowly -- though I think I will really crack down on myself next week and see if I can't jump off this plateau and get busy again.  (My hunting season is just around the corner, so...  Wink)

Hope you are all doing well ~

Hi ladies! I know this thread is from last year... Wink , but I'm going to try this diet, and I wanted to check in with all of you who've done it before! Is there anyone up for trying it again now?

I had my 3rd baby 9 months ago, and about 5 weeks ago, I decided to wake up every morning at 5am and run 3 miles and lift weights. I've done excellent with that, but I haven't lost any weight! I know I'm building muscle, but my real problem is that my sugar addiction has me eating junk throughout the day, sometimes binging for hours, and I know it's got to stop!

I'm really excited to start this, and hoping to get rid of my cravings once and for all! This thread has been a huge inspiration!

Still LOVE this way of eating!  I am pregnant right now, and the midwife wants me to follow more of the Brewer diet... but I will be incorporating both during this pregnancy.

I think, with you being a junkfood addict (ha) the first couple days will feel kind of difficult, but as your body adjusts, it becomes soooo easy!  Your energy/stamina level should come up, your food cravings waaay down, and any hypoglycemia you may feel now (between carb snacks) should go away quickly...

I am so glad you wrote in just now.  For some reason, your posts were interesting and instead of reading 76,000 pages of stuff  Cheesy, I just scrolled through to skim over your posts.  (I think the sardines caught my attention - not in a good way  Cheesy, but very entertaining!  You almost make me want to try them).  Wink  I really wanted to track just one person's progress and see what happened.  Anyway, since the posts stopped around Septemberish, I was wondering if you were still going and what the progress was.  At least you still like it.  Any chance you want to post what the score is today?  Like from when you started back in 08 until right before you got pregnant maybe?

I might just give this a try.  I have the book in my amazon cart right now.  Will check with hubby and see what he thinks.  He always likes to look over this stuff first.  We both could stand to lose weight.  Me more than him.

yeah, everyone has been enthused about the sardines - LOL!

The last few months have been a little "off" because I had surgery (partial thyroidectomy) and am now taking thyroid meds... which they are still trying to get the levels right, so first more weight loss, then a bit of weight gain.  Now, I am pregnant, so expecting to gain approximately 30 - 40 pounds...  (WAH!!) but most of that will come off soon after the baby is born.   Wink

Back to the actual diet...  Frankly, for everyday life, this is, absolutely AWESOME!!! However, both years I have "fallen off the wagon" so to speak when hunting season came.  I was determined to stick with it this fall, but... it was difficult to cook anything that didn't make my hair and hunting clothes smell strongly before heading out (hiking) before dawn - so again started snacking on the dadgummed "trail mixes", fruit, etc.  Now, remember, these things are all "fine" - as part of the reward meal - but I was hiking a LOT and thus munching off and on all day to keep my energy level up.  (Remember again, I had just had surgery - so was still feeling a little "off" anyway...)

Because of the extra hiking, I did continue to lose another couple pounds (I was looking pretty GOOD!) so, my overall weight-loss for last year was a little over 20 pounds - and that was accomplished in a few short months!

At this point, my thyroid is playing a little with my weight right now -- so since October, I have gained about 7 pounds.  Now, I am pregnant and think a pound or two of this is "baby weight", but overall jus' my thyroid.  Since it wouldn't be healthy to drop a lot of weight during pregnancy, I won't be following this (fully) until after I have the baby.  Don't get me wrong though... Part of my daily eating will be CAD - even during pregnancy.  After the little one comes, I am going back on immediately!   Grin

Thank you! Thank you!  I am going on an overnighter with hubby tonight (for a work conference tomorrow), so we can chat about it during the trip.

Smiling here.... I still love the CAD way of eating, and lost almost 20lbs before I got pregnant in September. This pregnancy (my first) has given me a strange aversion to protein, I'm doing better now.

Looking forward to June when the pounds I'm gaining will start melting away again. :-)

JoyChild,

That is funny you mentioned that, as the first 3 months of this pregnancy were pretty miserable - I felt nauseous a LOT!!  The thought of eating almost anything totally disgusted me... and while I felt better after eating protein, the only foods that sounded even remotely appetiziing were nasty carbs... like, I actually bought a (only ONE!) box of cocoa puff cereal.   Embarrassed  The kids all exclaimed "COOOOOOOOL!!" (ha) because this was the first time I have EVER bought such a vile cereal - LOL.

Footnote: No, the cocoa puffs did NOT make me feel better!   Grin I happily munched about 1/2 bowl, then felt horribly, terribly shaky and nauseous.  (Of course, we knew that would happen, didn't we?!)  LOL

Thanks, RunAmok! So here's what I did yesterday....

Breakfast - 2 eggs and RRL tea (no greens yet, I can't really figure out how to make that appetizing for breakfast?)
Lunch - Chicken Breast and asparagus
Dinner - 6 oz steak, 2 C green beans, 1 salad, and french fries

Amazing to me, is that after just ONE DAY, I woke up this morning down 2 pounds and for the first time in forever woke up without a craving for sugar! I ALWAYS wake up wanting chocolate or soda or something (I scored really high on the carb addicts quiz), but I already am noticing a difference in cravings (maybe it's totally psychological, but whatever it is, it works for me!)

Now today I ate really well, except I did cheat with a carb snack - I'm still breastfeeding, and we were out at the March for Life from 7am to 3pm, and I started feeling like I was starving and all that was available was half a blueberry bagel, so I cheated. But, I knew that today would be hard and I'm ready to try again tomorrow.

Prolifeguyswife,

YAY!!!  For some of us serious carb-addicts, it really can be this easy!  I typically have a couple days that I feel a little "off" - but my weight starts dropping immediately, and within a very short time, I lose almost all my cravings...  LOVE it!

Have a great day!!

I was down another pound this morning. Anyone want to start this with me? I'm pretty sure that, so far, it's the easiest diet I've tried.
