mine still is, baby is 13 mo.  some say it's hormones.  i think it's more a vitamin deficiency.  are you on a prenatal or supermom?  one gal said when she started on supermom hers stopped.   Grin  start it slowly if you are nursing, like going up 1/2 pill every few days or so.

ok Grandma is 74 and is starting to get bald patches on her head. Noone else has ever had this problem -Chilean heritage blesses them with FULL heads of beautiful hair. My mom is looking to me for help since she knows i have been looking into the natural stuff. SHe is on lipitor and something that starts with a t for cholesterol-both say that they CAN cause hair loss.. She stopped them both (apparently loss of hair is more important then high cholesterol.) I have made her a lavendar vinegar rinse to try for AT least 2 weeks till she sees the DR. A cleanse would be near impossible for her i would think at her age and condition. She has had a recent check up and is dubbed "healthy" except for cholesterol and feet problems. I would like to help her...she is embarassed about this-blessing she has more hair to hide it with. I don't know if it could be fungal-it looks almost like the balding disorder that is described as being the body attacking itself and making the hair fall out in clumps. Oh and she has had a hysterectomy and is way past menopause-so not sure bout hormons. Ask her about stress and she would say "PAH viejo pesado" -my grampa "viejo is difficult.
Anyways anybody have any suggestions that would be great.

The meds were probably contributing.  I think liver toxicity has a lot to do with your hair.  Check the shampoo first.  Detergents won't help her hair come back.  Then I should tell you, I've been harping on all of you to take your omega 3 fats (fish oils) for everything.  I just found out yesterday that FIL's doctor prescribed fish oil supplements for his high cholesterol.   Grin  I would put her on some cod liver oil after I checked the shampoo.  If her condition (cholesterol and hair) don't improve after a couple of weeks, maybe get her treated for yeast.

Click here for an article that addresses the nutritional reasons for hair loss in women. Diets that are limited to vegetables, low in fats, and/or deficient in protein contribute to hair loss or dry, damaged hair. Omega 3 fatty acids and essential fatty acids are recommended. Biotin, one of the B complex vitamins, is found in protein. Good sources are found in eggs and organic liver. I would not recommend soy products, as most are not properly prepared and can lead to other hormonal and nutritional problems.

If you could prepare a homemade lacto-fermented mayonnaise for her (like the one in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon), she would get the benefit of eggs and extra virgin olive oil (along with whey -- another protein) all in one package. She could put this on salads and sandwiches.

I do hope she is feeling much better soon

I loose lots of hair all the time, especially in shower, I also have frizzy hair once dried, and bad dandruff.  I was using a tree tea shampoo for this, but it was not helping and my dandruff is really bad now. I can not put my hair up because then you can see it really bad, and I'd like to be able to put my hair up on hot day's.  I tried different things for the frizz, natural leave in conditioner (which make my hair really Soft, but does not help the frizz.  I have been using a natural mouse for the frizz which helps more, but not all the way, and it make my hair feel dirty by the next day, and flat.

How many ounces of water for the vinegar rinse, and how many drops of an essential oil should I put in.  Do you use this every time you shower instead of conditioner?  Can you use any kind of soap bars for hair or does it have to say shampoo bar soap or does it have to be organic and natural or any soap from the store?  I need hair help bad please respond.  Thank You NV Smiley

check this thread. HB has her vinegar rinse on there in full detail. She mentions using dried herbs for an infusion but i and i know some others use essential oils. I just dropped dropped till it smelled right (kinda how i cook to) someone else may have more precise measurements.  Hope it helps! Smiley

How many ounces of water for the vinegar rinse
3 cups of water to with 1-3 Tablespoons of vinegar added.  I use a old shampoo bottle.  It's the bulk size bottle of Suave and it's just about 3 cups, so I marked the Tablespoons with a marker on the bottle and then I pour the vinegar up to the mark and fill the rest of the way up with water.

Quote
and how many drops of an essential oil should I put in.
I don't use essential oils.  I make an infusion of chamomile, lavender and peppermint with my vinegar prior to mixing in the water, BUT straight apple cider vinegar and water is all you really need.  I use this when I run out of my infusion.

Quote
Do you use this every time you shower instead of conditioner?
Yes.  I do not use conditioner.  I wash my body and my hair, rinse very well in the shower and then soak myself hair to toe with the vinegar rinse.  If my head happens to get itchy for some reason, I will use 3 cups for my hair (it's really long) and another 3 cups for my body.

Quote
Can you use any kind of soap bars for hair or does it have to say shampoo bar soap or does it have to be organic and natural or any soap from the store?
This depends on you.  If you have sensitivities to fragrance and detergents, try to find a bar soap that is free of everything.  Most people that use this method have good luck with Ivory bar soap.  I think I'm a little sensitive to it (not sure what's in it) so I use a bar soap called "Vel" and I'm very happy with it.  It costs a little more than Ivory but not as much as organic, natural or homemade soap.  Vel costs about $.50 per bar and the really good stuff goes for about $5 bar after you add in shipping costs.

Don't give up on this the first day.  It may take as long as 2 weeks to get your head feeling healthy again, but I would bet you'll notice improvement in at least 3 days.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for answering my questions.  I did have another though.  Does the vinegar rinse make your hair feel soft?, If not does your hair get ratty?  Will this help for frizzy hair too.  We also have an high Iron content in our water will that be o.k. still with the rinse?  Do you get "Vel"  bar soap at the regular grocery store or Wal-Mart?  If I got a lavender bar soap would that help with dandruff, or if I got lavender essential oils to put in rinse?  What exactally does regular shampoo's and conditioner do to your hair?  Sorry for all the questions, I'm knew to this kink of thing.  Thanks you NV

Does the vinegar rinse make your hair feel soft?
Very soft and managable.  If you comb your hair before you wash it, you will have virtually no tangles after you rinse it.,

Quote
Will this help for frizzy hair too.
Does your hair friz because it's curly or because it's damaged?  There is another thread called Taking Care of Curly Hair.

Quote
We also have an high Iron content in our water will that be o.k. still with the rinse?
I don't know.

Quote
Do you get "Vel"  bar soap at the regular grocery store or Wal-Mart?
Walmart doesn't carry Vel, but all of the grocery stores I shop at carry it and have for the last 35 years.

Quote
If I got a lavender bar soap would that help with dandruff, or if I got lavender essential oils to put in rinse?
Lavender is antifungal, so I would assume that it couldn't hurt.

Quote
What exactally does regular shampoo's and conditioner do to your hair?
Conditioner, as far as I know, doesn't hurt your hair, but it's virtually worthless, because when you use shampoo containing silcate products, the hair shaft is stripped by the shampoo and sealed by the silca and the conditioner is not able to penetrate the closed hair shaft anyway.  For more info on shampoo, read this thread:

"Your Shampoo Might Be Your Problem:  Going "No Poo"

Quote
Sorry for all the questions, I'm knew to this kink of thing.
No need for apologies.  As you'll find posted in the above thread, I suffered with this problem for almost 15 years before I finally found a solution.  I hope the information helps you as much as it's helped me.

Thank You for taking the time to answer my questions.  I have frizzy hair from being damaged (I was also told probably more frizzy due to water with high iron content).  I have a little curl/wave towards bottom (natural), but top to middle is straight and that is wear all the frizz is.  I also went to your thread on the web sit where you learned about vinegar rinses.  I like how their shampoo soaps sound, and will probably order some to try.  Have you used any of them?  The web site I have printed on some paper says htt://chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com/shampving.htm or the end shambar.htm.  Anyway's that's the one I'm talking about.  Thanks NV Smiley

I haven't tried the soaps, but I think someone else ordered some.  Look around the forum, you might find a post on this somewhere.  I think they look good too, but I'm so cheap, I just can't justify spending that much on soap when Vel works okay for us.  If it becomes a problem in the future, then I'm going to start buying lye/lard soap.  I've found this online for about $2/bar plus shipping.  If you're interested, I found this at the following sites.

Vel is just regular old bar soap.  My family has been using it for years.  My grandma wouldn't use anything else.  Every other kind of soap and/or shampoo made her itch.  We always thought she was just sensitive, but I've discovered recently that she was probably just reacting to the detergents in the soaps like everyone else.

HB is Vel a natural bar soap?  Does it help with dandruff, hair loss, frizz at all?  Also I haven't found it yet.  It is found in a healthfood store or just a grocery store.  I've tried two places and did not find it.  Thanks NV Smiley

I buy it at the grocery store.  I've always been able to find it in Missouri and Iowa, don't know about anywhere else.  I usually pay $1.00 per bar.  It's 2.79 for 2 bars in the add below.

Here's an online add for Vel

The Vel isn't what fixes your hair.  Vel just happens to be the cheapest detergent free commercial soap I can find.  If you can't find it, try Ivory.  I was using this for awhile but I think it may contain some milder detergents because I started reacting to it as well and switched back to vel.  If you have problems with Ivory then google and find yourself a good lye/lard homemade soap and use that.   What fixes your hair is NOT using detergents, shampoos, cleansers, etc.  Every time you use these products they damage your hair and scalp, more and more and when you discontinue use, your hair and scalp will heal.  The vinegar will help to speed the healing process and restore a healthy pH to your hair and scalp.  Most shampoos are alkaline and your hair and scalp are supposed to be acid.

I knew someone a while back that suffered severe stress (his fiancee died from a crach in front of him, his parents died within a week of this death) and after all these losses, all his hair fell out, even his eyebrows.  Totally due to stress I think, so yes, I think stress can cause your hair to fall out.
On a different note, I have an interesting story.  After my son was born, my hair was always falling out like crazy.  I had just bought the how to herb book and it says something in there about using herbs for hair.  So, I went to the natural food coop bulk herb area and got dried dandelion root, alfalfa, and kelp.  ground these together and made capsules.  Started taking one  a  day hoping it would maybe make my hair thinker.  It actually make my hair start growing out in areas where it had been thin for many years.(Im only 30)  Well, I showed my mom my short tufts of growing new hair and she shared this info with my step-dad.  He has the bald center on his head like many guys.  He started taking the pills I made and his hair is actually groing out too.  Not dramatically but it is growing.  I was surprised.  Just wanted to share.

My cousin who happens to be nursing right now is losing her hair like crazy now... she has thin hair anyway but it has been getting thinner the last few years.  Her naturepath told her it was her yeast overgrowth that was basically eating all the nutrients she was taking in and once she gets rid of the yeast it should grow back.

shampoo i use baking soda.  If you want some lavender chamomile soap you can PM me, I dont know anywhere else that makes it.

This is the website that initiated my vinegar research.  They sell shampoo bars if you're interested.  Can't vouch for them, but their stuff looks great.

WOW I just spent a good while reading everything on this site.  It all looks great and I am going to order several sample bars.  This, and the vinegar rinse info, are just the things I have been looking for!

Thyroid can cause hair loss {for those who are not prago or nurseing},and I was told kelp and vita. B help this.

I just joined the group and saw this topic and was going to say the same thing about thyroid. I have hypothyroid and lost quite a bit of hair overtime. I started taking levothroxin after being found postive for low thyroid function and my hair a year later has all grown back and I feel more human again. So please have your thyroid checked.

My shampoo bar samples came in the mail today!  I am sampling Rosemary Lavender Aloe, Babassu Marsh Mallow, Herb Garden, Lavender Spice, Nettle, and Carrot Milk & Honey.  There were so many, and the sample price was so reasonable, I just got everything that sounded good.  Ida was very nice and easy to work with.    I don't know which I will try first!  Also, I made the Essential Oil Vinegar Rinse that is on the website.  Apple Cider Vinegar plus essential oil.  I had lavender already.  So tomorrow, look out, I am tryin' somethin' new!   Grin  I will report back tomorrow night!

I tried two soaps from chagrin valley, and one shampoo bar.  They smelled lovely when I first got them, but as time went on they started to smell like a hot, bitter pine tree.  It was really weird.  I'm hoping my experience was an isolated one and I'm also interested in seeing how things turn out for you.  My hair is terribly thin and is still falling out.  I'm nursing my nine month old, and in the last eight months I have gone through two moves (by myself with two kids, one halfway across the country) and the return of my deployed husband.  I am only 23, and my hair is less than half as thick as it was just a year ago!  I can tell from one of my favorite barrettes.  This thread is great and I will start taking the kelp I just got right away.  Any suggestions for how to take it other than in a capsule?  I don't have any right now and it's not in the budgett.

Today is my second day to use the shampoo bar and the vinegar rinse.  So far I have no complaints.  My hair is doing fine, i.e., I can't really tell a difference from when I was using the shampoo.  I hope hope hope that in a few days I will see a very positive difference though.

I'm not quite sure if I'm doing the vinegar rinse right.  I am just pouring a little in the jar lid and pouring it onto my head, trying to work it into my hair as best I can.  It is COLD!!  Can I put it in a plastic bottle?  The website said use glass.  I'm scared I am going to drop the glass jar in the shower!

The shampoo bar is soooo lathery (is that a word?).  It suds up great and smells so nice.

After just re-reading this thread yet again, I am wondering if there is anything else I can be doing to help my hair loss.  It has always been thin.  I first noticed it falling out about 4 years ago.  It has been very gradual and now after pregnancy (during nursing) it has gotten more extreme.  I can see through my hair to my scalp in the front.  I have been taking two SuperMom tablets every morning.  I have cut out white sugar and white flour.  I eat a whole foods diet (nothing processed at all).  I had my blood checked about 3 years ago and everything was normal.  I am not overweight nor underweight. I no longer take the birth control pill so I have no extra hormones flowing through my body.  I have been handling this with diet, but it doesn't seem that diet is really working out too well.  I have been praying so much about it.  Now I am thinking I need to treat it topically, thus I am trying the suggestions here.  I'm still praying.    For a long time I was using Nioxin shampoo.  It was a nice shampoo but I don't think it helped.  And it is full of chemicals, nothing natural about it.    Is there anything else I can be doing?  I am 39 and don't want to face the rest of my life partially bald.   Cry

Lately my hairdresser and I have noticed that my 6yo daughter is thin on top.  My hairdresser says her hair is just like mine.  She is only six.  This can't happen to her so young.  She eats the same diet as I do (but a lot more sweets because everywhere you go someone is shoving candy at kids).  I am having her use the shampoo bars too (but I have not ever said a thing about her hair, don't want to get her hung up on this).

Any thoughts, suggestions?

The idea behind using the vinegar is to rinse the soap from your hair.  Just using a lid full probably won't do you as much good.  I take 3 Tbsp of vinegar mixed in 3 cups of water.  I use an old large Suave conditioner bottle to do my mixing.  It's close enough to 3 cups, I just measured 3 Tbsp in it and marked the bottle.  Then I fill it to the mark with vinegar and fill it to the rim with water.  Then I use the bottle to rinse my hair after initially rinsing it in the shower.

Also, don't lose faith.  Keep in mind that your hair isn't going to thicken overnight.  What I noticed was that my hair actually felt thinner than when I used shampoo.  This is not due to hair loss.  This is because that detergents actually cause the scales on the hair shaft to stand up.  This is what causes the tangles and snarlies.  When you use the soap and vinegar these scales lie flat like they are supposed to making your hair actually feel a bit thinner in the beginning; however look at your sink and tub drains and check your brush.  I would bet (and hope) after about a week, you'll notice less and less hair in these places.  I did.  It's not my hair clogging the drain anymore, it's hubby's (can't convince him to quit using shampoo).
