The idea behind using the vinegar is to rinse the soap from your hair.  Just using a lid full probably won't do you as much good.  I take 3 Tbsp of vinegar mixed in 3 cups of water.  I use an old large Suave conditioner bottle to do my mixing.  It's close enough to 3 cups, I just measured 3 Tbsp in it and marked the bottle.  Then I fill it to the mark with vinegar and fill it to the rim with water.  Then I use the bottle to rinse my hair after initially rinsing it in the shower.

So you are using that much every day?  I couldn't tell for sure from your other posts.  I am using the recipe from the Chagrin Valley website.  I do know you said you have very long hair.  Mine is just about chin length, all one length.  So I would not need as much as you, but I definitely want to use enough to make it worthwhile!  And if you're using a Suave bottle you are using plastic  -- that is ok then?

Thank you for the encouragement.

I wouldn't recommend plastic if you're going to drink it, but I don't think it would be an issue for your hair; although I could be wrong, but I've not had any issues with it.  I make up an infusion with lavender, peppermint, chamomile and vinegar in a glass container, but after it's made, I store it in a shampoo bottle and keep it in the shower.  I then pour from one shampoo bottle to the other 1-3 T of the infusion and fill the rest with water.  I don't shower every day, but I use the vinegar every time I take a shower--even if I don't wash my hair, because it's good for the skin too--unless I have a date (hubby hates it when I smell like a pickle *snicker*  Grin ).  If your hair is chin length, you might only need a Tbsp, but you'll probably still want 2-3 cups of water mixed in it to get the vinegar solution to actually rinse away the soap residue.  I got my recipe from the soap website as well.

I have had a problem with thinning hair which, in my case, has been related to a hormonal imbalance.  I use the apple cider rinse, but I add Shave Grass and Nettles.  It has done a lot to make my hair shiny and thicker.   Smiley

Can you please explain how you do this?  Also, how did you find out it was a hormonal imbalance and what did you do about it?

Since my hair seemed to get worse when I quit the birth control pills, and then got better during pregnancy, I have been wondering if it were hormonal as well.  How would I find out?

Here is how I make my hair rinse.  I put the dried herbs (nettles and shavegrass) into a quart jar and pour apple cider vinegar over them.  I use about 1 cup of herbs to 2 cups vinegar.  Then just leave it on your windowsill for about 3 weeks.  Shake it up every day.  Then strain it.  Take about 3-4 TBS and dilute it in a quart of water.  Now you have a rinse to pour on your hair.  You can leave it in or rinse it out.  The Bulkherb store also has a premixed herbal mix which includes the above herbs as well as a few others.  It's called Beautiful Hair and you will get a recipe with it for a hair treatment that does wonders.  It's messy, but makes  my hair noticeably thicker and shinier.

As for the hormonal issue, I found out when I was trying to conceive and underwent hormone testing.  I was having other symptoms as well and was diagnosed with Polycyctic Ovarian Syndrome.

shampoo i use baking soda.  If you want some lavender chamomile soap you can PM me, I don't know anywhere else that makes it.

This is the website that initiated my vinegar research.  They sell shampoo bars if you're interested.  Can't vouch for them, but their stuff looks great.  They claim

"Our all natural shampoo bars contain no artificial fragrance, color, preservatives, detergents, alcohol, urea, formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulfate, DEA, propylene glycol - or any of the other synthetic hair care additives."

I had JUST order soap and shampoo bars from this website! I ordered a bunch of samples. My first and only I have tried so far is the Rosemary Lavender Shampoo bar. I LOVE it! I used it on my daughters hair as well, Emma (3) Abigail (21mons) and I could tell a BIG difference in all our hair! Abi has natural curly hair, and after using this Shampoo bar, her hair was twice as curly and bouncy! Emma has thick long hair - and it had more body than usual! The ends of her hair even curled when her hair dried! After using the shampoo bar, I did a water/vinegar rinse. After rinsing the shampoo out of my hair, I do a final rinsing with the water/vinegar and DON'T rinse it out! It leaves your hair so soft and shiny. (I use organic apple cider vinegar) Your hair smells like vinegar at first but once your hair dries the smells is COMPLETELY gone!

Well ... I am reporting back on my experience with the shampoo bars and acv rinse.  I used them for two weeks exclusively.  Not only did I not see positive results, I saw a definite increase in the hair loss.  I am even thinner on top than before, in only two weeks.  And, the vinegar smell did NOT go away for me.  I could smell it when it was humid outside, when my scalp was sweating, and various other times through the day. My hair was dull, lifeless, and "fly-away".

Prior to the shampoo bars I was using Aveda shampoo.  I have used Aveda products for the last 16 years at least.  They are expensive but I have always thought they were good quality.

The question I keep asking myself is why are so many others seeing such great results when switching to the bars, but not me?  All I can figure is that most people are not using a high quality shampoo in the first place.  If I were to use any shampoo from the grocery store shelf, such as Suave or Pantene or Aussie, etc., I would have really dull, lifeless hair.  As it is, with Aveda, my hair is always shiny and full of body in spite of being so very thin.  Up to now I had attributed most of that to having a good haircut.  But now I am seeing that it also has a lot to do with what I am using on my hair.  I only tried the shampoo bars b/c I thought they would help with the hair loss.  They not only didn't help, they seemed to accentuate it.  This morning I went back to Aveda.

So .... I would be interested in comments from anyone else.  Did I not try the bars long enough?  I even increased the amount of the rinse I was using, and put it in a squirt bottle for better application.

Oh well.  Its not looking like there is anyting *I* can do about my hair.  When I went to the derm. a couple weeks ago she measured my part in different places.  It was 4mm up top and 2mm in back.  Because it isn't an even loss all over that rules out anything health or nutrition related.  My thyroid levels are good too.  What this means is it is "andro-genetic", meaning, in layman's terms, I am much more susceptible to normal levels of testosterone (that every female has).  There is really nothing that can be done.  Medications have negative side-effects.  I cannot begin to describe how devastating this is.  Right now my hair loss is not at a point where it is the first thing you notice when you look at me.  But it is getting there.  This is really affecting me emotionally.  I know my husband is upset as well but of course he is not going to say anything except just be supportive.  It seems like an easy answer would be to get a wig but I can't imagine having to wear a wig for the rest of my life.  In the big scheme of things hair loss isn't that big of a deal.  I know people who have horrible diseases, family trauma, etc.  I feel guilty for being so upset about hair.  But it IS a big deal.  We talk about whats on the inside being more important than the outside, yes, but even scripture seems to make a big deal about physical beauty.  And the verse about women's hair being their covering is confusing to me.   Huh

thanks for letting us know about the shampoo bars, i have been going to get them for some time now.  all i know is that my hair only falls out when i'm nursing.  i have been using the vinegar rinse also with no change in the amount of hair loss.

i know how you feel, as my hair is still falling out.  i believe mine is hormone related.  have you considered going to a natural dr. to see what they find to be the cause?  it is totally hard on your self esteem most definitely.   Sad

my husband has had great success with using Perfect Food.  he drinks the powder mixed in water, and it's NOT for the faint at heart!   Tongue but you might try the capsules.  he has had massive hair and fingernail growth since taking them and can tell it's helped his general health a LOT!  his blood work is constantly improving over the last few years.   he hasn't ever had hair loss, but it has made his hair grow really fast.  i am planning to start taking the pills when i'm done nursing, as i've tried it and he wasn't as content.  i think i will actually start now, slowly.

Tell me about Perfect Food.  Never heard of it before.

My dh is a physician.  I asked him what he thought about me going to a homeopath (recommended by a friend).  In the past he had implied that he was ok with that.  But this time he said that he felt it would be a lot of money for little to no result.

mama2three,

I'm sorry this didn't prove to be the solution to your problem.  It's been good results for some because they found the root of what was causing their hair loss or itching scalp.  I would say that your problem must lie elsewhere.  Read back through the thread.   There's info on thyroid, hormones and diet.  I hope you find the solutions to your problems.

mama2three,   I am very sorry for what your going through.  Here's a cyberspace hug for you with a  Kiss.
Something you could try is B-Complex. A few yrs back going through a very stressful time in life I broke out in hives, plus my hair was coming out more then it normally does.
My mom advised me to try extra B vitamins before I look into food allergies.  So I started taking 100mg B complex, once a day. My hives dissapeared, my nails grew very strong and long and my hair grew thicker ! ! I was thrilled!:)   Christmas came around and we traveled. I forgot about my B complex and my hives came back Roll Eyes  Eventually I stopped taking it and I'm fine now. My body must have needed extra B,going through a stressful period.
Also, what about just trying the baking soda, instead of any shampoo. Somewhere on here they have instructions for that....

mama2three,

I have a lot of hair loss after pregnancy and breastfeeding. I've read that low iron can be casue of hair loss. I know you've tried a bbunch of different thingds. Don't give up! Keep praying and trying different things.  My whole family drinks the Perfect food. I usually mix it with water and add a little homemade fruit juice to sweeten it up a bit. I'm pregnany with my fourth and have been taking Supermom and alfalfa, which both have a lot of iron and have helped me a lot with my anemia and low blood sugar levels. You could also try Spirunila podwer by itself if low iron might be the problem. I lost a lot of hair after my 2nd baby was born and was pretty much bald on the sides of my head. I did have candida and my baby had a horrible yeast infection throughout her body. I did a strict candida diet for 3 months (while breastfeeding) and that wiped it out of both of us. And my hair started growing back thick.

I'll be praying that something wroks for you.

Thanks to each of you who responded to my post from this morning.  The Perfect Food looks quite amazing.  I am taking SuperMom already but that is my only supplement.  Before I got pregnant I was taking kelp several times a week and had noticed that my hair was growing but then discovered I was pregnant.  So now I don't know if that was it or not.  Prior to that I had tried B vitamins and Biotin.  Then we began grinding our own wheat so I stopped the supplements thinking I was getting the real thing.

I am so new to all of these natural supplements.  How does one go about deciding what combination of things to try?  And whether or not it is ok with breastfeeding?  That is a hard one for me b/c so few studies are done on natural supplements/b'feeding.  I know my baby is getting some of the SuperMom -- HER pee pee is flourescent after I take it!!

Thanks, y'all, for caring.

TammyLee here.  I started this thread way back when, and my hair is still falling out.  It's been pretty emotional at times.  Anyway, I went on an elimination diet for about 5 mos., and recently went off it.  I think my hair loss is getting worse again, and am planning to go back on the diet.  I think I may want to try Supermom, but can I use it safely while nursing?  DD is almost 12 mos., and I am not ready to quit nursing, nor is she.  Thanks in advance!!!

BTW, I joke with my dh that God knows the numbers of hairs on my head, but I'm afraid I will too!!!!

yes Supermom is safe while nursing, though it is good to start with one for a while then work up to two a day.  have you tried extra kelp or B vitamins?  just some other ideas.....

I knew someone a while back that suffered severe stress (his fiancee died from a crash in front of him, his parents died within a week of this death) and after all these losses, all his hair fell out, even his eyebrows.  Totally due to stress I think, so yes, I think stress can cause your hair to fall out.
On a different note, I have an interesting story.  After my son was born, my hair was always falling out like crazy.  I had just bought the how to herb book and it says something in there about using herbs for hair.  So, I went to the natural food coop bulk herb area and got dried dandelion root, alfalfa, and kelp.  ground these together and made capsules.  Started taking one a day hoping it would maybe make my hair thinker.  It actually make my hair start growing out in areas where it had been thin for many years.(I'm only 30)  Well, I showed my mom my short tufts of growing new hair and she shared this info with my step-dad.  He has the bald center on his head like many guys.  He started taking the pills I made and his hair is actually growing out too.  Not dramatically but it is growing.  I was surprised.  Just wanted to share.

MAMA2THREE-
Have you seen this reply? I have the same problem you do. I have always had thin hair. I got made fun of for it being so thin. When I got pregnant, it didn't fall out anymore and actually started growing in places where I hadn't had hair for as long as I can remember. Then (all 3 times) when my baby gets to about 3 months old, my hair starts falling out by the fistfull! UGGG! I almost want to get pregnant again just so I can have normal hair! I took the supermoms this whole pregnancy and I am still taking them. I mainly started taking them because someone said that when they took them their hair didn't fall out after pregnancy, but it didn't work for me!  Cry I am going to try the dried dandelion root, alfalfa, and kelp. Have you tried this?

hey savedbygrace--just wondering if you seek any treatment, or have ever been told that you have low functioning adrenals?  the same thing happens to me and i think that is what causes it.  stress is very hard on this condition.  i get accupuncture and chiropractic for this and it helps a lot.  i think the kelp and alfalfa are in perfect food and i am going to start with that.  i have just been a little lazy.  too many pills, you are supposed to take 5 per day.   Tongue  i already take supermom, and 9 primal defense.  guess i'll have to suck it up and just do it!   Grin  are you trying anything?  just curious.  i am really interested in the above mentioned treatment.  i was going to do it, but struck out with finding them here so i gave up.  trying to juggle too many balls i guess.   Roll Eyes

I have never sought treatment or been diagnosed with anything. I never go to doctors and even hate going when I am pregnant! I have never tried anything herbal for this except the supermoms. I never even thought of it really. I guess I have just lived with thin hair so long I don't think of it often until my baby is about 3 months and it falls out everywhere!  Tongue (I currently have a 4 month old and my hair is presently falling out) My hubby gets aggravated with the hairs everywhere. Especially when they fall into dinner! Embarrassed
Did you get a saliva test done or how do you know you have low-functioning adrenals? Do you have other symptoms? What are the symptoms besides hair loss? I read a little bit on the web after reading your reply but I just don't know. Thyroid disfunction kept comming up. But I really don't want to spend the money on a home test and don't think my husband would like that idea much either.
What do you think of using progesterone cream for it? Are you still nursing?

i am just like you gaining nice thick hair, then a few months later it all falls out everywhere!  my chiropractor and one other one have said i have an adrenal gland problem and that having more children will make it worse.  other symptoms of this are:  being cold a lot, when my hormones flair so do my food allergies/intolerences, and some others listed here:

http://www.womentowomen.com/adrenalfatigue/symptoms.asp

i believe breastfeeding can also make it worse, they have hinted at that before.  i think it causes high levels of cortisol in the blood, stress hormone.  so i suppose stress is bad for it.  i am gonna do some more reading about it on this site i just found.

http://www.womentowomen.com/adrenalfatigue/index.asp?id=1&campaignno=adrenalfatigue&adgroup=adgroup1&keywords=adrenal

there is a thread somewhere on welltellme about it too.  wish i had some answers for you.   Undecided

I knew I had heard many times that your nails and hair may grow well during pregnancy, and then will return to its normal state after birth as your hormones fall back to normal levels.  This article explains it much better than I could.  Take this info for what it's worth - I thought I would throw this out there!

Pregnancy changes your entire body, and your hair is no exception. Many women experience luxuriant growth and increased thickness, while others find that their once lively locks have become dull or limp.
Increased Estrogen
If you find that your hair is growing fast and thick, you can thank the increased amount of estrogen in your body. Estrogen sends a signal to your hair follicles that they need to get growing and stop shedding. Increased estrogen also revs up your metabolism, which brings nutrients to your scalp as well as to your growing belly. In addition, many women eat better and take vitamins during pregnancy, which leads to healthy hair growth as well as a healthy body.

Texture Changes
If your mane seems to change texture – from straight to curly, full to limp – or won’t take a perm, that’s because the pregnancy hormones also affect the very structure of your hair.  They get to the cortex, which is responsible for giving hair its curl and elasticity. According to one mom of a 17-month old baby boy, “About three months into my pregnancy, my hairdresser pointed out that my hair seemed thicker and curlier than before. And I had always had rather fine, straight hair.”

Hair and Health
Since hair is one of the first indicators of good health, women suffering from severe morning sickness or poor eating habits should look to their hair for warning signs that they’re not getting enough nutrients, especially iron. Even a small iron deficiency can lead to dry, brittle hair that’s lighter than your natural color and falls out easily. If you notice any alarming changes in your hair, be sure to tell your doctor.

Post-pregnancy Fallout
After the baby comes, don’t be surprised if all that beautiful new growth begins to fall out. Many women notice increased shedding from about 3 to 6 months after delivery, which is simply a sign of the body adjusting as hormone levels return to normal. It may take a couple of hair growth cycles (up to several years) before your texture completely returns to normal, especially if you wear your hair long.

Remember that everyone’s body – and hair – reacts differently to pregnancy. Have fun with the changes and remember, they’re only temporary.

Many women notice increased shedding from about 3 to 6 months after delivery, which is simply a sign of the body adjusting as hormone levels return to normal. It may take a couple of hair growth cycles (up to several years) before your texture completely returns to normal, especially if you wear your hair long.

mine fell out the entire 16 1/2 mo. i was nursing, and then another couple while it leveled out.  seems like this would point to a problem with my hormones.   Huh

Boo Hoo! Cry
Since my pregnancy/nursing and now pregnant again, my dark brown curly hair has gotten straight!  Its not completely straight, but I saw a picture of me after I was married over Christmas and was in shock as to how curly my hair was then!!  So it sounds like until I am done with the babies and nursing this is just the way its going to be!  Cry
I too lost a ton of hair after my daughter was born, but that wasn't half as sad as loosing the curl.  I know, "all is vanity!"  Embarrassed
But, as the quote stated, it could all come back!  Grin
