Here's something that I make for sensitive or dry and cracking skin that would be good as a bath additive or whatever.

For adult use, you moisten the skin and apply about a nickel-sized amount in the palm of your hand and rub it all over your hands, then rinse in warm (not hot) water. This stuff is a lifesaver for people that handle lots of paper, are outside in the winter and/or must wash their hands a lot and are left with dry, rough hands.

This application can be used for bathing as well, but I wouldn't recommend it for the hair as the coconut oil will be difficult to rinse. It is VERY gentle and soothing.

1 cup sea salt -- I get this in bulk to save $. If it is too coarse, I run it through the mill until it is the consistency of table salt.
1/3 cup EV Coconut oil
1/3 cup EV Olive Oil
10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil (for the fellas, I use Sweet Orange)

Blend well and keep in a glass jar with a wide mouthed lid. Use a scoop for dispensing. It makes a thoughtful gift for a fraction of the cost of brand name products.

This looks so easy and great, SC.  Thank you!!  Here's a website of a place in town that sells stuff for soap, herbs, ess oils, salts, etc  www.texasnaturalsupply.com.

And another thought.  I was wondering if a little apple cider vinegar in the water with baby, or in the water that is sponged on baby, would be a good thing to get the spit up, etc. crudies out of fat folds, etc.  No soap necessary, I would think.

Since I've had success with going no 'poo this week, I thought I'd do this with my new baby:  Maybe the ACV mentioned above for sponge offs and quickie baths.  When the hair needs a wash, a dab of homemade soap on one of those scrub brushes made for babies (cradle cap brush) to scrub allover the head with a rinse in ACV and water.

Blessings,
Cara

(Using what you have) I would mix:

1 Cup Dead Sea Salt
1 - 2 TBS of Olive Oil
5 - 10 Drops of Eucalyptus EO
3 TBS of Baking Soda

I would put it in a pretty jar and include instructions to add 1-3 tsp to the bathwater.

For Sweet Baby Cream I would mix:

1/2 Cup Coconut Oil (warmed to liquid)
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
10 Drops of Lavender EO

I would put this in a pretty squeeze bottle (Walmart for 50 cents) with instructions to smooth just a few drops over towel dried baby after bath. Also, you could add a few drops of this to baby's bath instead of the bath salts. I'm thinking that this should be the right ratio of coconut oil to olive oil so that it will be "lotion-y" instead of hard at room temp with just the coconut oil. Although if you are in a tropical location it would all be liquid anyway...  Grin

I haven't made these exact "recipes" I am just estimating based on concoctions that I've experimented with and what ratios seem to work!

Let me know if you use them and what you think!

Jamie

Thank you SOOOOOOOO much! Came at the right time. I'm so excited Grin! I did end up finding some DSS at my local health food store - EXPENSIVE. Now I know the difference between that and Real Salt Wink (thanks DawnsEarlyBirds Kiss). The DSS I got, Masada brand, was unscented or Eucalyptus or Lavender for the same price. I almost went with the unscented to add my own Euc. EO, but ended up getting the Eucalyptus. I hope that's OK. I'll have to find a great place to get it bulk from now on. I looked up a few places. Anyone else want to let me in on their supplier Wink? Oh, Jamie, where did you find your squeeze bottle at Wal-Mart? Beauty section? Thanks

I can't wait to mix up these recipes and give them to my friend. Heck! I can't wait to try them on myself. I have such horribly dry hands. You can tell the seasons by my skin - terribly dry feet, it's summer; horribly dry hands, it's winter Cheesy.

I just bathed my son (9 mo.) with the ingredients ForeverGirl mentioned, except I didn't have DSS, just regular salt.  His skin was so nicely oiled and moisturized afterwards, without being greasy. I think I'll skip the baby wash with the next baby, and use this or something similar.

The only thing I'm not sure on is the hair.  His fine white blond hair, which I washed with the same water, got left too oily, so it's sticking all over like a little Albert Einstein.  Cheesy  I was thinking maybe just a bit of bar soap would do? Or just not let the bath water get in his hair, and wash it with plain water?

Back in February, I got a greal deal on DSS on eBay--$20 for $17, I think.  Last I checked, they were still selling them...check out this thread:

I just bought some Dead Sea salts at Walmart. It was $4.67 for a tub that was maybe two pounds. I think I'm going to try that Ebay seller sometime too!

I'm glad for the info on this thread. I love to give my baby a bath; it's probably my favorite activity with him and it was quite a concession just to go to every other day! So I'm happy to hear of a method that is good for his skin. He does seem to be a little more sensitive than his brother was. I found also that it (salt and oil in the bath) made his hair a little greasy so I'll probably just wash it with a touch of Burt's Bees or something.

Dara makes a natural baby soap that smells wonderful! I'm hoping she'll invent some baby butter with the same scent! I love a sweet smelling baby.

I found the same ones in the aisle w/ the bath stuff (not basic soap and stuff, but more the lotions and the like)...just past the "Cosmetics", closer to "Pets".  Ours was on the bottom shelf.  Grin

I made my salts and moisturizer and it was a hit. Thanks again, Jamie, for the great recipe. I'll have to make some for myself now. I even got people at the shower saying that I should make it to sell. Had to keep it quiet about how easy it really was Wink.

I wanted to post a pic of the finished product, but it wouldn't let me attach the file; said it was too big. And that's after I resized it as small as it could go on my program. Any suggestions?

Where do you find these pretty squeeze bottles at Wal*Mart? I mean, what section? I know all W*M's are set up differently and things change, but I'd love to know where to get new, pretty squeeze bottles.

The ratio on the lotion is the only thing I'd adjust a bit. Maybe half the amount of olive oil. I live in the NW and we have snow right now. The lotion was still pretty runny. Other than that.... Smiley

The only squeeze bottle at my W-M was in the aisle with hair brushes and other hair accessories. There's a section for travel size bottles. It was in there. And yes, it was $.50. Wink

I have a question concerning my 3-month-old chunker of a baby.

She has an area on her neck that is really raw and stinky.  I'm assuming it got this way because no air gets to that skin because of all of her baby fat.  I've tried washing that spot off with just plain water, but the skin is peeling off and she just cries!   Sad  There are no other spots that are like this.  I wonder if she is sweating (babies can't sweat at this age, or can they?) and that is keeping the area constantly moist.

What should I do for her??  I've tried keeping her head up for awhile and blowing on it to dry that spot out, but she doesn't tolerate that for long, and I can't do it all day.  Help! Undecided

i had that problem too with my chunky monkey. i would wash it out with plain water and a very soft wash cloth to get all the "cheese" and whatever else collected in there. then i would rub coconut oil in there. it helped alot with his raw red rashes and alot of times they were yeasty with milk collected in there.
i don't know when they are supposed to sweat but mine always seems to have been a sweat machine.  Cheesy

I don't have any coconut oil.  What else could I use?  I thought about Goot, but it seems like it would be too harsh to use on one this young.

Do you have olive oil?  That would probably help, too.  Sometimes I have put just a little apple cider vinegar in the wash water to help with yeasty rashes.

The idea is to seal it off from moisture or to dry it out. Coconut oil would probably be best because it's antifungal but like Blessed213 said, olive oil would work also. You could just dry it often which would help some. You could use powder instead of oil. Part of the problem is that the skin is wet & sticking together, then peels apart with movement. Oil seals off the moisture & lubricates it so it doesn't stick together, powder dries it out so the skin doesn't stick. If you have powered slippery elm by chance that would be fantastic & is very soothing but reg baby powder would help. You want to do either oil or powder, not both.

The redness & cheesy smell can be from yeast/fungus. The folds don't get air so they stay damp & yeast/fungus can grow. If it's really bad you can pat on some water with a little Grapefruit Seed Extract in it, let it sit a minute, dry it off & then apply the oil or powder. Use maybe 2 drops to 1/2 cup of water of the NutriBiotic brand of GSE, or 1 drop of Beeyoutiful's to a 1/2 cup of water. If you don't have GSE & the rash is really bad you can dab it with weak tea made from any of the antifungal herbs. None of my babies were chunky so I can't say that I have a lot of experience with this but I do have experience with areas of the skin that can't dry out getting yeast/fungus & I have taken care of babies that have it in skin folds. What kind of mill are you talking about? A wheat mill for grinding flour? My mom has one and I just got some very coarse salt. Would she have to worry that I would break her mill if I asked her if I could use Roll Eyes it or should I use something else?
