Ok, I just got back from the doc and my 10 month old girl has labial adhesion so I had to get some estrogen cream and then after it separates I am to put "booty-butter" on there to keep it from reoccurring.  Ok, so I really don't want to use estrogen cream on a 10 month old.  Does anybody know any alternatives?

Also, I've started using ACV/water instead of soap on myself and I was wondering if you can use that for babies and toddlers?

Someone posted the recipe using coconut oil/olive oil/ and dead sea salt... Do you use this on the child's head as well. Is dead sea salt the same as sea salt?  Can you use sea salt instead?

Okay, I'm not sure about the estrogen cream.  Here is how I have been washing by now toddlers.  I make a warm bath and let them play.  I rub them down head to toe with just the warm water.  I only use a safe, natural baby soap if they are really gross (example: spaghetti, mud, sticky).  I have only had to use soap on their hair a few times.  My dd has beautiful shiny hair.  Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about the adhesion thing either, but I'm with you on no estrogen for a 10 mth old. What about making a salve or using Bulk Herb Store's Eden Salve?

I have been using the dead sea salt (Beeyoutiful has a salt soak made with dead sea & epsom salts) & oil blend for my kids ever since I got the recipe on this thread. I've tweaked it a bit to my own liking, but same basic idea. I just drop maybe 2 tsp to 1 Tbsp in while the water's running. I let them play/soak a while and then I go in and have them lay down (my ds does this on his own, but my dd, who is 2, has to do it with me) on their backs in the water (I don't make it very deep) and give them a good finger massage on their scalps with the water. If you want to "wash" their hair, you could either go with a very mild, natural soap, or just use baking soda. But check out this thread on oil cleansing. It may help you decide how you want to clean your little ones. Another note on the salt/oil bath - a friend of mine was dealing with bad diaper rash and eczema on her baby, so I made her a jar of the salt/oil. It worked so well and she loved it so much that she convinced me to do a little home business making and selling the stuff. I've given it away as baby shower gifts since January and always hear back how wonderful it is on their baby's skin, especially diaper rash. Even more than babies, my friend's husband, brother and almost every adult in her family love the stuff. It just makes a great soak.

I don't use shampoo on my hair either. I do the same to my hair as I do to my children, just in the shower, of course Wink. Let the water rinse all the dirt away. (I do have to use conditioner.) If you're using soap, you're stripping away all the natural oils and causing your body to over produce oil to compensate. My husband has had a stinky head Tongue for a while even though he keeps his hair buzzed short. But he would pile on the shampoo thinking it would help. I told him to stop and almost immediately his smell went away. I don't use soap on my body either. I usually do a dry brushing session before I shower and let the water rinse everything away. I've also found that any soap, even a natural one, on my arm pits is what makes me stink Embarrassed Cheesy. So I even do just a gentle water shave; no shaving cream or anything, slap on more of the good ol' baking soda and I'm good to go for the rest of the day. Of course, where I live, we're still getting snow, so it'll be interesting to sniff me this summer. TMI! Sorry.

Thank you both... this is helpful.  I just ordered some diaper cream from lotionandnotions.com (they are fellow welltellme sisters).  All the stuff on there is cheep and looks good.  I'll tell you when I get it.

Does anybody know if it's ok to use Apple Cider Vinegar on kids and infants?  I'm loving using it on myself and I kind-a thought - why not.

I thought I remembered reading something about adhesion on here somewhere and I think this is it.

Apparently, I can't remember how to attach a link but you should be able to search it out with the title of the thread there.

My second daughter had this, but it was with her perineum.  I don't know if yours is the same, but all I had to do was take some ky and wipe with firm pressure to help it to open up.  If I quit then it would glutinate back together again.   Undecided  It still looks like it is together a little and she's 2 1/2.  I just use coconut oil and gently but firmly try to reopen what has tried to come together.  It's rather thin/transluscent skin so it doesn't take too long.  Hope that helps.

I've not bathed my 1 month DS, because how do you hold them still and keep them warm? It doesn't seem relaxing to the baby. So besides products, what's the process?

I always bathe with my babies until they can sit up safely on their own without any gadgets. Daddy just brings baby in at the end of my bath and then takes baby when he is done and dresses him.  I love this!

I posted this in the Dead Sea Salt thread, but thought I would mention it here since someone asked. Big Lots has 2 lb bags of pure Dead Sea salts for $3. This is all I use most of the time, with a few drops of lavender eo. Sometimes I use a little baby shampoo like Aubrey organics or the Angel Baby Wash/shampoo. They both smell really good & have great ingredients.

Question for havasmama_05 - can you list the recipe you were talking about in this thread?  I looked on this thread and on welltellme in general and can't find the recipe.  I'm sure it's staring me right in the face, but ... preggo brain!!!  Anyway, I just got my dss in the mail and have epsom salts and would like to blend together that recipe to test it out on myself.

Thanks a bunch!!

Thanks so much!!  I was actually looking for the one with epsom salt in it - but I could always sub the baking soda for the epsom salt or play with my own mix.  I tried one of the other recipes this morning on myself and TOTALLY loved how my skin felt afterward!!!  (Used 1c. dss, 2/3c. coconut oil, 10 drops lavendar essn. oil)  I can't wait to use it on the new baby - I'll be using it on the rest of the kids from now on too!

Sorry, I didn't get to read this until today.

Your recipe sounds great. I make mine a tad different, but it's just like cooking: everyone has their own taste. Beeyoutiful has a salt bath that has DSS & Epsom salts. I don't have Epsom, but I'd like to get some to try. But here's what I make:

  • 1 Cup DSS
  • 2-3 T Baking Soda (you could do less or more; I've seen one recipe that calls for 1 Cup)
  • 2 T Coconut Oil
  • 2 T Grape Seed Oil (again, you can do more oil if you prefer)
  • 10-12 drops essential (I've used Tea Tree & Lavender w/ or w/o Rosemary)

Just like baking I mix the dry together and the wet together, then combine the two. I found that if I don't do it this way, the baking soda floats in the bath like little balls. I think it's b/c it clumps up with the oil and then it can't dissolve in the water. If you mix it with the salts first, it gets better dispersed.

I think I know what you're talking about now. I went back to Beeyoutiful, but they don't have the bath salts anymore. Or, at least, I couldn't find them. So I went back to one of my catalogs. Here's the ingredients:

  • Dead Sea/Mediterranean Salts
  • Natural Epsom Salts
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Olive & Grape Seed Oils
  • Eucalyptus

Is that what you were looking for? I don't know the proportions. I just read the ingredients from the catalog. Don't know where you can get it either. I even checked More Than Alive.

I have been mixing my own salts using these ingredients except dead sea salts (haven't got them yet) and I love it.  Sometimes I will add avocado oil too.  I just love the way it makes my skin and kiddos skin feel.  Most of their baths are given with about 2tbs of my own mix.  DH even likes it. If you have DSS you can use just that. That's what I've been using and it's great. I've given it to Moms with babies that have diaper rash problems and the response has been a resounding, "This stuff got rid of my baby's diaper rash! I love this stuff!" If you want to use the epsom, which I'd like to try too, I would use the same recipe I gave you above and just do half & half. Instead of 1 cup DSS, use 1/2 cup epsom & 1/2 cup DSS. If you want to use the jojoba oil and another oil, again, just use half & half. It you don't like the result, just tweak it a bit. That's what I would do. Part of the fun of making your own stuff is the mixing experiments to see what you come up with. You're proud of yourself and your product when you reach a concoction you're pleased with and feel the satisfaction every time you care for your family with it. Have fun!!!! Grin

I've used ACV on as young as 2 years old.  Didn't have any babies any younger in the house when I started.  I just use soap, no baking soda or shampoo of any kind in the tub for anyone in the family.

OK...I skimmed the whole thread and have 2 questions for clarification--

1.  These recipes are to be put in the water, not actually used directly on the skin, correct?

2.  With the small amounts being used per bath, am I to assume you mean for use in an infant tub, not in a regular tub bath w/ Mama?

Thanks!  Smiley

Yoop, are you tellin' me that your little guy hasn't had a bath yet???     Shocked

I've been using about a teaspoon dissolved in a bowl of hot water for wipe downs and baths.

For the real deal, I prepare the bowl of hot water/salt mix, lay baby on a towel in tub and spray water from the detachable shower head all over till good and soaked and then wash him up using the dissolved sea salt water with a flannel cloth and no final rinse.

Not sure if this is the right way, but I'm not fond of cleaning oil off of plastic infant bath tubs.

I do put it on my own skin in the shower and love it.  When I tried to use it directly on my little girl's skin, she said ouch - the salt is pretty rough even though I bought the fine ground salt.  So, I just let them soak in it.

I've been using 2Tb of the recipe on my 2yr and 3yr olds in the regular bath, water covering about to their bellybutton when sitting and it has been fabulous.  I just love the way their skin feels - and no lotion needed!!

Seriously, he took herb baths w/ me starting right after birth for the 1st week...I don't use an infant tub...he comes in w/ me several times a week and we sponge him off.  A few days ago I used a gentle scrub on certain spots...sloughing off dead skin on his head.  His skin has looked good, just wanted to help get rid of those little white bumps.

Anyone know how long a mixed bath salt recipe will last and where I should store it if I won't be using it for a while?

I just made one batch that I won't be using for a few months - refrigerator or shelf?  Will it last that long or should I give it to someone as a gift?

Contains:
Dead sea salt
coconut oil
jasmine scented oil
orange oil

I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that it would be fine on the shelf. I wouldn't think twice about it. If you don't feel comfortable with doing that, it wouldn't hurt to stick it in the fridge. Or you could just bless someone.... Wink

Boy did I do something wrong with the bath salt recipe. I mixed...

1- DSS
2- baking soda
3- Eucalyptus oil
4- Olive Oil

Okay, it was very grainy and I thought if I just add some water then it will make a paste (better for washing) Roll Eyes
BIG NOTE: I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCE Grin
I added enough distilled water to make it pastey...I am just about to put the lid on it and I notice lots of bubbling and foaming. Shocked It almost bubbled over the edge but I stirred it down several times. I was wondering if it was still safe to use but I washed my hands and it was fine. I bathed the kids with it...everything still bubbling. After I put them to bed I took a shower and decided to try the new wash....it was rock hard!!! Shocked I just chipped some pieces off with a butter knife and used it anyway. My skin was so soft and so was the kids. I will continue to chip my creation into the bath...when I do the next batch I will NOT add water Grin

Try smashing it with a hammer. Inside a heavy plastic bag will help contain the mess while you are breaking it up. Just don't seal the bag while you are doing it or the bag will pop like a balloon when you hit it with the hammer.  Shocked HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

I'm not sure why, but the salts that I made with epsom salt got hard too.  The ones I made without epsom, just dead sea salt, did not get hard.  I didn't add water to either one.

By the way, has anyone used the premixed Baby Bath Herbs from Bulkherbstore?  I just noticed it when placing another order and I think I have most of those herbs on hand - lavender flowers, rosemary, yarrow and rose petals.  I don't have the rose petals.

What do you do with it?  Just put it in the bath with them?  Or brew a tea with it and then put it in the bath?

Any ideas?
