Looks good to me. Be sure the licorice is reg. licorice & NOT DG type. DG has had the sweet part removed & won't do anything for low blood sugar or low blood pressure. As far as I know it's only available in caps anyway so I doubt that's what you have but thought I would mention it. The combo you came up with is a good, basic vit & mineral formula as well. You might want to add yellow dock to it for more iron & liver cleansing/liver support. Also maybe milk thistle. Poor liver function tends to go with low blood sugar & low blood pressure. I posted this on the hypotension thread as well. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

My two and a half year old is throwing major fits when he wakes up from his naps but also has some other signs of low blood sugar, he is pale, sweaty and disoriented.  I am aware that this could be just plain defiance, but feel there may be something else going on, please, please if there is someone out there who has dealt with this I would appreciate any advice I could get!

Do you have access to a glucometer?  You could borrow a friends, maybe?  If you could check his blood sugars, then you could *know* what you are dealing with.

The nuts and bolts of dealing with low blood sugars is to eliminate simple sugars (juice, candy, soda, fruit, little debbie snacks, etc.) from his diet and focus on high fat & high protein meals and snacks, but there are several threads about low blood sugar on this board that will give you more information, and probably won't contain such long run-on sentences as I'm using now . . .

Try "hypoglycemia" in the search box to start you off!

I am reading all about eating proteins, but what if I don't like animal protein?  I am not determined to be a vegetarian.  I just cannot stand the taste of meat and milk/cheese/eggs really upset my stomach.  I tried to eat the broth from a soup I made my family this week (with ground beef).  It gagged me.   Tongue

Is there anyone out there who's defeated these hypoglycemic symptoms without eating animal protein?

In my post on the polycystic ovary syndrome thread today I outlined the dietary changes I made in the last few weeks that really improved my hypoglycemic symptoms.  I do eat meat, but not a lot--about once a day.  We do a lot of marinades which give the meat great flavor.  Maybe you could experiment with different spices and marinades?  For me, eating stuff low on the glycemic index was more helpful to eliminate my low blood sugar symptoms than loading up on protein.  I am still learning and experimenting, so I am not a wealth of info, but if you have questions feel free to pm me--I may be able to answer them.  hth.

If you haven't eaten animal proteins for awhile you will probably need to supplement with some enzymes for awhile to help your body adjust. Make sure the enzymes you choose include protease and lipase.

In the meantime, eating beans in diff. form can help you get extra protein. I like to make hummus, re-fried pinto beans (both scooped with chips or something), add black beans to my salsa, etc. A little goes a long way for me- I am always surprised at how long a little beans will hold me.

Enzymes might help with the digestion/tummy upset.  I can't really give any advice on vegetarian replacements, because in all of my research, I've not found any evidence that there is a healthy replacement for adequate portions of healthy meats in the diet.

Regarding non-meat/animal protein suggestions and ways to deal with upset stomach upon eating animal protein...THANK YOU for all the suggestions.  I'd totally forgotten about the protein in beans (duh!).  I will also try the enzymes when I do consume dairy.  You all are like a huge storehouse of information here!   Smiley

When I almost passed out one time in Russia, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. My mother had it so I was not surprised, but very disappointed. Nutrition is not the goal of Russian cuisine so I think that brought on the severe symptoms. We had a very amazing doctor come over and he helped with the diagnosis. He said that hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hypothyroid (low thyroid) and hypotension (low blood pressure) all go together. It is easy to test hypotension of course. My BP used to be 90/60. It is also easy to test for hypothyroid by taking the basal body temp before getting out of bed in the morning. If it is low, thyroid is low. I just stuck a thermometer under my arm for a few minutes before getting up. It was cold out, so I didn't mind an extra few minutes huddled under the covers.

Now, I don't have the problems that I used to. My BP is 115-125/60-80. Whenever anybody takes my BP, I always ask them how it looks. The regular response is, "Good. I wish mine were that good." I can eat sugar on a daily basis with no more problems than anybody else might have, (although I'm not a big sugar person, so I rarely get too much). So, what made the change?

Fasting. Complete water fast.

Hello--  I have posted many many times about my symptoms....stress, shakiness, hunger, etc.  I finally got diagnosed as hypoglycemic ... big surprise!  So yesterday evening I started a water fast.  Lord willing I will go three days ( I would like to go longer....) .  I am so hopeful that it will help with my low blood sugar and low blood pressure.  I had read Steve Talent's post, partially quoted above, and I have a friend who got rid of her hypoglycemia while doing a juice fast for cancer.  I am anticipating that I may have to do more than one fast but I am really praying to see results! Smiley  Please pray for me and I will let you know how it goes!

InEverything,  Did you do the fast? Did it cure your hypoglycemia? What was your experience like? I have it and sometimes can't even get our of bed in the a.m. until DH has brought me eggs......... It is awful. I had been doing so much better and now am getting bad again and I don't know why. I have 3 kids 5 and under and am not sure how I could do a fast. It seems like I would spend the 3 days in a coma! I am scared that I would not be able to function at all.

I would love to hear from anyone who has tried this.

Also, I have heard that Chromium is good to take for Hypoglycemia. Anyone know if that is true?

Hello-- thanks for reminding me to check in.  The fast was good but it did not cure my hypoglycemia.  A longer fast may be required. I was not in the position to do a more intense fast either.
My plan now is to avoid sugar as much as possible, eat more good fats, etc.  I do feel better eating this way. I still think there could be a link between candida and my hypoglycemia, thus avoiding sugar helps.  I have read that going extreme low carb could help also, but I am not ready for that either.
Chromium did not help me.  I really like milk thistle, keeping the liver healthy is important for hypoglycemia.
What are your eating habits now?  Try not to eat any sugar or too many carbs in the evening.
Sorry to not have any answers!  Undecided Smiley

I eat GF, mostly CF (for the kids but sometimes I can't stand it and I eat cheese and/or butter Roll Eyes). We also don't eat any corn or oats. I eat very little sugar and, because of the dietary restrictions, very little refined foods. I eat a high protein diet. Yesterday was particularily bad because I made the mistake of drinking some coffee. I was soooo tired and needed a little pick me up because of all the things I had to accomplish. Anyhow, I usually use my DH's coffee grounds after he has used them so my coffee is pretty weak but yesterday I accidently drank the first pot. Tongue Anytime this happens I am toast for the rest of the day.  Roll Eyes Needless to say I didn't get all of the things done that the coffee was supposed to help me get done. Angry

I take milk thistle, chromium, Super Moms, CLO, Cal/Mag and vitex. We have been under a HUGE amount of stress lately and I am thinking that might be why it is so much harder to control right now. Undecided Huh

Stress is hard for me too.  I will be praying for the situations you are facing.  I have been focusing on taking deep breaths more during stressful times and really focusing on God's promises.  He always sees me through hard times.  I just got done teaching God's promises to my Good News Club.  Hebrews 13: 5-6.  You take your fingers on one hand and one finger at a time say "God will never leave beppjo" and the other hand "  The Lord is my helper"  You put your hands together and that is God's promise to you!!  Smiley Smiley

I don't have hypoglycemia (thankfully!!) but I do have a question about low blood sugar. I fasted breakfast yesterday, and thought I did fine until today. I woke up feeling shaky and whoozy, and even after I'd eaten breakfast (rice) I still didn't feel normal. I felt dizzy if I bent down, or even lowered my upper body a little, plus I was still shaky. I ate a lot of lunch, eating 2 pieces of whole grain toast with PB or ham/cheese. Plus I had an apple with PB. After that, I felt hot all afternoon. Not exactly feverish, but something like that. Anyway, for me, that particular symptom means that my blood sugar is dipping, as do the other symptoms, from what I can tell. Wink Anyway...I was just wondering what I should do about this? I want to keep fasting once a week, as it's a "prayer and fasting" thing, but don't want to have trouble the next day. So, should I just gradually work up, or what? TIA!!! If I didn't provide enough info, let me know. Smiley
