Rules of the road... er, forum.
« on: July 20, 2006, 10:37:30 PM » by Gabriel Anast
1) Don't Proselytize - Proselytizing is making any definite statement in lieu of evidence, personal experience, or personal theory in an effort to lead others to your conclusion. To avoid this, just preface any absolute statements with, "I believe..." or "In my opinion..." or better yet, "It has been my experience that..." Instead of saying, "American cars are the best, and foreign cars are unpatriotic" say something like, "I grew up in the midwest and saw firsthand the devastation of the wholesale move to Japanese cars in the 80's. My personal opinion is that the American mentality of 'me first' lost us as a country a great opportunity to nurture native industry back to health and contributed to our current infatuation with products made in communist China."

2) Don't Call Names - "Name Calling" is putting any group of people or beliefs or whatever into a defensive position by giving them a label. Instead of saying, "Homosexuals are perverts" say something like, "I believe there is significant evidence that homosexuals are 13 to 39 times more likely to molest children than are heterosexuals." Name Calling can also include deprecating someone for lack of experience. Believe me when I say that we all lack experience in some area... learning is the objective, and sometimes some of us (except for me, of course  Roll Eyes) will come across as pretty unintelligent in one area or another.

3) Search First Post Later - Always search the forum first to see if there is an answer to your question. There is a search bar at the top of every page, and you can also use google to search this site by typing something like this into the google.com search page: "kefir site:welltellme.com" This will search WellTellMe for the word kefir.

4) No FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) - We want real stories, real examples, real stuff. If you are not sure about something... anything... just say, "I am not sure this is safe, but..." or "My mom who is no real authority, thinks this is not healthy." That is sufficient. If you just have a gut feeling, that is fine... say, "My gut feeling is that..."

5) No Bible Debate - If a part of a Bible text is in dispute in an issue, please post the question/comment on 7xSunday.net or a similar forum and continue the discussion there. Keep topics on WellTellMe fairly limited to practical as opposed to doctrinal discussions. And please, please don't sermonize... bleh.

Always keep in mind that you are human and can be wrong, that your experiences are limited, and that if you really are right then your objective is to convince and woo your audience, not drive them into depression and remorse. I'll try to keep this in mind as well...

6) Don't Create Conspirators - If you are having legal difficulties or problems with any government agency, please do not post any details about your situation in this forum.  If you need to speak to someone or need help concerning your situation, please keep these matters in private messages or emails.  Sharing this information could potentially make co-conspirators out of the forum members that might be sympathetic to your situation.  This rule is also to protect the poster from any possible ramifications that might come about by advertising private information to government officials, attorneys, or opposing parties. ~added 2008 0121~

Feel free to talk about any topic that you are willing to learn about.

Thank you,

WellTellMe Staff

Is there a technical way to keep this post at the top of the index page for a couple days? ...Besides just us "bumping" it up?

I was wondering the same thing. Like maybe putting it (or something like it) right on the front page permanently?? Just a thought. Smiley

This is actually a very good idea and I believe it's in the works.   Grin

We are working on getting the rules in a more permanent location, but just to keep the newer members updated, I would truly appreciate you attempting to search for your question before you post.  Topics can be merged after they are created; however this tends to mess up cross links and it adds loads to my work pile.  I love my job, but I only have so much time and so many members have already contributed their wealth of wisdom and knowledge in many of the questions that have been asked over and over again.

Please be considerate and attempt a search before you start another thread.  You might be surprised how much information you'll be able to find in seconds rather than waiting for someone to answer again.

If you have trouble, try using a different word or combination of words (ie instead of the word "start" you might try "begin" or instead of "baby", you might try "infant".  I make every attempt to correct spelling whenever prudent to help your searching capabilities.   The search engine is also up for improvement, but in the mean time, make sure you are on the home page when you do your search to improve your chances of getting a hit.

Thanks for your understanding.

HB,

What would you suggest that we do if someone asks a question that we know has already been asked before?  Should we go ahead and help the person, or would you like it if we just redirected them to the answer if we know where it is?  I ask because I think I am guilty of answering someone's question, knowing that I had answered it before under something else, which probably leads to a bigger mess. Wink  Should we then refrain from things like this?  Just wanted to know.  Thanks!

Good question.   If you know the topic has been covered somewhere else and you're willing to point this person in the right direction, be my guest.   As far as I'm concerned, that's what "community" is all about.

Thanks for asking.

There should be a way to make it a "sticky" or "thumbtack" at the top of the forum.

If someone types a post in ALL CAPS, it is considered in internet etiquette as shouting.  In most circles it is not considered polite to shout, so please only use ALL CAPS for emphasis when needed.

I thought I'd just give any newbies a headsup in case you didn't know.

I would like to remind everyone to follow this rule.  This board is just full of information on everything from headaches to toenails and everything in between.  There may be a few subjects that have not yet been covered, but I would say very few.  Please do a little search work before you decide to post.  Merging topics is a lot of extra work for the moderators and shouldn't be necessary in many cases.  Once a topic has reached a certain size, merging is also not a good option as a larger topic usually has links in other threads which reference it.  Merging a topic will create link errors as the location of the topic changes everytime it is merged with another thread.

The larger this forum becomes, the more important it becomes to try to keep topics refined and in the right place for the members to be able to navigate more efficiently.

If you're having trouble using the search function, make sure you start from the home page.  The search function is limited by the topic folder in which you are located when you initiate the search.  Also, if you're having trouble, you might have better luck using the advanced search function in the right hand column.

If you're still having trouble, try using less words.  Make sure your words are as unique and descriptive as possible.  For instance, if you'd like to know "How do I keep my hair from falling out", try using "Hair Loss" as your key search words.  If you want to know "How do I cure a cold with a cough".  You would type "Cough Sore Throat" in the search box for the best results.  If this search turned up poor results, use less words.  Try typing just "cough" and see what you get.  If after you've tried these strategies to find something to answer your question, and you still haven't found what you're looking for, start a new thread and we'll try to your question answered for you.

If you find the thread you are looking for but the answer to your question is not in the thread and the question is related to the existing topic, please do not start another thread.  For instance if you want to know if echinacea is good for coughs, don't start a new topic called "echinacea for coughs".  Instead, go to the "Cold, Cough, Phlegm, Congestion & Sore Throat Remedies" thread and reply to this thread and type your question in the reply.  This will make it much easier for the next person to benefit both from your question and the answers received.

If you would like to know what the benefits of echinacea are and not limited to coughs, then starting a new topic/thread would be a better choice if one is not already found.
In most cases these types of topics look something like this "Echinacea:  Benefits, Usage & Dosage" or "The Benefits & Uses of Echinacea".

If you have any questions or need help with this, please don't hesitate to send me a note.  I'll do the best I can to get your questions answered on how best to navigate in the forum.

Thanks for your understanding.

Is there any issue or legality with printing out a post to give to someone else?
My question specifically involves HB's post on the treatment of candida in the step by step form.  I want to give it to a friend as it is so consise and covers all points so well.  I have left the post in its original format with the exception of the posted links (as when printed they have little value).  I have also sited the info as being from WTM.com and written that it is not mine, nor was it created by me.
I feel that this is different from someone posting a recipe for dish soap as these are her words and her time was taken in writing this.
I wasn't sure if this subject had been covered before, and I didn't come across any results for it in a seach.

So sorry for creating a new thread when all I had to do was open my eyes:o and the answer to my question could have been found.  Thanks for not kicking me out of the forum. Roll Eyes  I'll try to do better next time. Wink
Next time it will be 40 lashes with a spagetti noodle (whole wheat of course).  3rd offense, you'll be dipped in Grade B Maple syrup and feathered with organic chicken feathers.  4th offense, we'll make you eat Little Debbies and Potato Chips containing soy and trans fats.  Shocked

Roll Eyes If the search wont work then what am i supposed to do? Its getting to where i never ask anything because I'm afraid i will get in trouble. Its very frustrating!!! Then there was the time i asked a ? and i got the old rules of the road reply but in the links that HB put up still didnt answer my question. What could i do? My thread was locked. I was very upset because i had a very sick baby and didnt have time to dig into 10 pages worth of stuff. Sorry but this has just been something thats bugging me. I will shut up now. Embarrassed

Have you read the links on searching?

How do I know if someone already asked the same question?

I went to the homepage and type "Serum C" in the search box at the top of the page and the thread you were looking for was the first in the list of searches.

My guess is that you either a) spelled it wrong or b) were not on the home page.  I typed this in as well and worked just fine.
