Can you tell your baby's gender before birth?
« on: July 21, 2006, 08:42:33 PM » by a_new_creation
I am 20 weeks pg w/ #3.  I already have a boy and a girl so I have gone thru both "kinds" of pregnancies.  W/ my ds I was quite sick but not too tired, but w/ my dd (and this pg) I was not very sick but OH SO TIRED.  I also could not tolerate my beloved raw milk for a few weeks w/ my dd and this pg.

So I'm thinking this is a girl.  We do homebirth w/ no u/s, so we'll have to wait to find out, but I was wondering if anyone can consistently guess the baby's gender before birth based on pg symptoms.  I realize symptoms are different from woman to woman, but do you know YOUR symptoms for a boy/girl?

The only other thing I can think of that is different between my known boy/girl pg is that my diet is waaaaaay better now than it was w/ my ds (#1).

Well, Carla, if you were part of our family, it is CERTAIN you would have a boy. We don't know how to make girls or curls over here -- but we've had fun trying! Shocked Grin Wink

Well, I had dreams of both of my children and was right with them.  Not that it really mattered, but was neat that it came true both times.  Did you keep track of your basal body temps?  If so, they say this is almost 100% accurate.  If you have intercourse on the day of ovulation, then it will be a boy.  If you have intercourse, a few days before you ovulate, then it will be a girl.  Perhaps, you could try the next time and let us know if it works. Sounds like a wives tale to me.  The father determines the sex which would have nothing to do with the day of ovulation.  Wink

All three of my pregnancies were totally different from one another.  I was very sick with my son, not sick at all with my first daughter, and went through half my pregnancy sick with my second daughter.  I gained less weight with my third (14 lbs.), more weight with my second (24), and lost 30 lbs then gained 14 back with my first (my son).  I "knew" what my first two were before we found out by sonogram.  With my third, in the first 6 months I just "knew" it was a boy, in the last 3 months I insisted it was a girl.  We were surprised with a girl.  I think it's hard to tell no matter what, but I've always done great guessing the gender of other's babies, so I think you are having......a GIRL!  Congratulations!!!   Wink

Yeah, but maybe girl sperm survives longer than boy sperm? There might be something about the ph or something...

I got that from the Taking Charge of your Fertility book, by Toni Weschler.  HB and KatieMac are right.  The man determines the sex of the baby, but more that one sperm comes out of the ejaculatory.  While many swim the race for the win, only one will make it.  It says that the "girl" sperm are more heartier swimmers than the male ones.  The female sperm can live longer(supposedly, this is science, doesn't mean it is true) than the male sperms.  Hence the reasoning for boy babies being conceived on ovulation day(the day when you have the cervical fluid there to carry it straight to the egg, isn't that just like a man? Grin) and why the female sperm can survive in the walls for days.  I don't believe in old wives fables.  The Bible says not to.(Hope that wasn't illegal to say, now Smiley )

Well, I got on to give an explination of how this works, according to several different sources that I have read, but HealthyinOhio, you beat me!

We didn't plan it this way, but since I keep up with things, I happen to know that it did work out that way with both my daughters, the sperm were waiting a couple of days before the egg arrived.

I wouldn't completely depend on this method, but I do believe that scientifically, It does GREATLY increase the "chances" of what you will have.

I like to try to guess the gender of friends' babies based on the speed of the heartbeat. I have my own doppler, so it's sort of fun. Sometimes, it even works. :-)

Slower heartbeats, 120-140 beats per minute, is a boy and a faster one, 140-160, is a girl. If it's exactly 140....you just have to guess. :-)

My last 5 children were born at home with a midwife.  The first 4 the midwife was POSITVE were girls because they all had heart rates of 140-160 beats (just as MissusLeata says.)  The 3rd and 4th WE were positive were boys because, like numbers 1 and 2, the midwife said they would be girls.  Even our older children would say, "we know it's a boy cause Sue says it's a girl!"  The 5th child had a heartrate betweeen 120-140 and the midwife was POSITIVE it was a boy.  And you guessed it, it was a girl (just like we suspected!! Grin Grin Grin)

My daughter-in-law uses a key suspended from a string held in front of your stomach to determine the sex of the child.  If it swings in a cirlce it is a girl, back and forth or sideways, it is a boy.  2 woman in our Bible study are pregnant, both have been told after ultrasounds it is a boy.  One swings in a circle, one goes back and forth.  Both are due the end of Sept.  I'll tell you how it works!!! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy  Oh, and with each unpregnant woman in the group the key swings in a cirlce, and with the man of the house where we meet it swings sideways .....

This one never worked either.  I can't decide if it's "witchy" or just plain silly.  Huh  I have a book full of these tho.  I can't find it, but I remember it had something in it about putting salt in your shoes to determine the gender.  Then there are the Chinese zodiac birthing charts, etc, etc.  None of these things (the ones I tried Wink ) told me anything...except there was this one thing...oh yeah..an ultrasound.  *snicker*  Grin

Has anyone heard of the pee in draino?  Depending on the color it changes it "will" tell the sex.

My husband is the great predictor of the sex of our children...he told me our first child would be a boy, and the second one too. I'm hoping that if/when I get pregnant again he'll tell me it's a girl...

My husband has always known ours right away, too.  I've only been right 2 out of 5 times.  With our first three babies, we didn't find out ahead of time.  But we have found out for babies 4 and 5.  It's fun both ways.

We were able to predict according to ovulation charts too, HB. Of course we didn't "bet" on it, but the timing thing was true in our case. We didn't plan it out, but we "knew" after I was prego. I didn't think I'd ever have a girl, but she surprized me- literally. So much for the Planning in Natural Family Planning!

My SIL did this and it didn't work. She was really disappointed. My husband told me not to even think of it (not that I was Roll Eyes Cheesy ), because he said those fumes were too dangerous for me to be messing around with while pregnant. Good advice, I think. Grin My MIL has guessed all of her grandbabies just by looking at our bellies. I don't know how she did it, but she was right everytime. I was actually upset at her for continually saying "It's a girl", because I wanted another boy so bad. Angry LOL!

This is fun.
I have heard that what you crave helps tell if it is a boy or girl.
Our heartbeats have all been high and we have all 5 girls.  We are expecting again and this baby is bigger and I crave totally different things this time.
Our timing for ovulation has always been that we will take anything because we just want a baby so we have sperm swimming even before ovulation so maybe that is why we have all girls.  Or maybe that Lord just knows best that we needed girls!

I've had pretty good luck guessing with mine and others with this method.  I don't know if there's any science to this, but if the weight is out front, like a basketball under you shirt, then it's a boy and if you look like you just inflated all over, it's a girl.  This was true with all three of mine.  If you are one of those that gains very little weight then this works really well, but if you're like me and balloon up, it's a little harder to tell where the weight is distributed. I carried both my babies out front like a basketball, and I have two girls.  My mom carried all nine of her all over (she was jelous of me, and I was glad that I took after her sister Wink).  She had 7 boys!  I guess that it works differently for everybody.

I've never heard of the key.  My sil used a needle & thread held over the expectant mommy's wrist by a VERY steady hand in a non-breezy area.  Supposedly it'll swing in a circle or line slowly, then stop, then do it again, until it has gone through all of your children.  I think you can do it pregnant or not pregnant.  Huh  It sorta worked for her.  She has...
girl boy boy boy girl boy boy (the last two are twins)  the needle trick said she'd have
girl boy boy boy girl boy girl

I did it before I ever got pregnant and it went something like
girl boy boy girl        and I have a two boys, but miscarried before either of them.  Who knows, sounds sorta creepy to me.  I don't know how something like that could tell you what you have or will have.  It's fun to do it as long as you don't put much stock into it.

I'd like to try the draino thing, just for fun.
