Dark, White, Spotted & Otherwise Discolored Teeth [Tooth]
« on: January 11, 2008, 10:10:42 PM » by newcreature
I just noticed one of my three year old daughter's front teeth is discolored.  It had one or two white spots on it before, but it seems suddenly to have darkened, not to black, but just darker than it was before.

Have any of you experienced anything like this?  What do you suggest that I do to help my daughter have healthy teeth?

I have a discoloration on one of my front tooth as well!! I don't remember what the dentist said it was, calcium buildup or something maybe  Undecided  but they did say it'd go away in a couple years... well, they musta been wrong becuz, it's still there and that was probably at LEAST 10 years ago!!! Sorry I can't help you Sad

Have you ever done floride treatments with her? Do you have city water with floride in it? Floride has been proven to "mottle" the teeth. Could it be a cavity? I do have a friend who had a dentist tell her she had calcium buildup and she has to have it "scraped" off when she goes in for her cleaning.

She's never been to the dentist, but I know our water does have fluoride in it.  Also, it's the whole tooth that appears to be discolored now, in just a day or two, because for some reason I looked closely at her teeth yesterday or the day before and it was not like this then. Undecided

I had a daughter with a darkened tooth after she had injured the gum tissue around the tooth. Essentially, the blood from the gums seeped in and "stained" the tooth. Could she have fallen and bumped that area? This was really nothing to worry about--it was a baby tooth.

If the whole tooth turns brown or black, it is considered a "dead" tooth. CJ

I Google searched "dead tooth" and this link came up:
http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/health/babytooth.html

It seems that a tooth can discolor and have the same appearance as a dead tooth, but recover after a time.

There is a possibility that she could have bumped it.  We'll just keep an eye on it for now.

Thanks for the responses.

I wanted to add to this......

keep an eye on the permanent tooth that grows in.  I had trauma to a baby tooth as a child and the perm. tooth came in just fine, so i never thought more about it.  But, it was only ever so slightly discolored and a dentist noticed it when i was 23 Shocked.  The permanent tooth had died at some point and i needed a root canal to save the tooth....thankfully he did notice!

i know this isn't usually the case in these situations, but just be aware it can happen.

I was in a bike wreck when I was 5 and my 2 front teeth both died 00 one was yellow, one was gray! EEEECCCKKK! Shocked Shocked
The dentist told my mom we couldn't pull them because they have to save the place for the permanent tooth. So I was stuck with 2 HIDEOUS teeth until almost 2nd grade! Those bad boys hung in as long as they could.... Wink
On another note, our city water growing up had flouride as well and partially stained my big teeth. I tried to have them whitened but the dentist told me bc the stains were caused by the chemicals in our water there's nothing we can do except get veneers. (I'd love to but they're a little pricey! Grin) So to prevent it with my dd and ds I make sure we always have a bottled water by our sink when brushing teeth and we never drink the sink water. Just a little tip!

I smiled at myself real big in the mirror this morning, something I guess I haven't done in a while because I totally freaked out!! My front teeth have always been fairly nice and white and suddenly they look almost transparent and you can see brownish spots in them. Huh I should have the nicest looking teeth around according to all the things I've read here or in Weston A Prices's stuff. We eat healthy animal fats, no fluoride in our water or toothpaste, in fact I haven't used a boughten toothpaste in ages. I had brushed with baking soda for a short time before I started making our own stuff: coconut oil with peppermint EO. So I'm really, really stumped. What do teeth look like if the enamel is off? Mine don't hurt at all nor are they sensitive to hot and cold, but they were when I brushed with bs. Since that's been months ago, why would my teeth look like this only now? Undecided I'm planning to start guzzling Bone Ami, but if anyone else has any ideas, PLEASE let me know!

I know you probably don't drink pop, so a lot of what these sites say isn't applicable to you. I know you drink kombucha, right? I wonder what the acidity of kombucha is?  Do you think the problem may be acid wear? HTH  Smiley

Thanks for those thots, Seeker. Smiley I hadn't thought of kombucha, but according to the links you gave it does make sense. I drink one glass a day at dinner because I'm trying to not drink too much water with meals and because I really like the stuff. Cool

I did some searching and reading about kombucha and teeth and all I can find is how bucha is suppose to protect teeth from cavities...

The thing I'm confused about though is that what is recommended for correcting acidic wear are things that I do already like lots of milk, brushing with a soft brush and mild paste, and drinking lots of water (I could up that some more I suppose).

So, since it makes sense, I will abstain from kombucha for a while Cry, take Bone Ami  and see if I notice an improvement. My man drinks as much as I do and he doesn't show any wear, but maybe that's because he's never been pg and isn't nursing a baby. Wink

If all you drink is one glass a day, then maybe it's something else.   Huh

Hmmm... again, maybe it's something else causing the transparent look?

This makes sense to me. I do notice that my teeth tend to be "less white", esp. if I'm PG or nursing. Let us know how the experiment goes. I hope you're able to go back to the kombucha! Maybe just the extra Bone Ami will do the trick.

Mine did this once when I was really using up all my nutrients. I started taking more multi vitamins and sleeping a little bit more. It didn't last long.  Water was also increased which I believe helped.

(My teeth were kinda transparent - no spots)

Hmm, I recently started taking more CLO and extra Supermoms...  I could up my water intake though...

Oh, ok thanks. My man has been skeptical of my homemade toothpaste and maybe he had a good reason- he usually does. Roll Eyes Cheesy

OK, what my man and I have decided is that I'll continue the kombucha cuz I wasn't drinking a huge amount a day, and take calcium and brush with something different- not sure what yet. Probably a natural toothpaste. Welcoming any other thoughts. Smiley

Just reporting that my teeth are getting whiter! In fact, whiter than they were before!!! I started taking 6 spoons of Bone Ami a day and in a few days could tell a big difference! Now a month later the brownish look is almost gone!!!! I'm really, really relieved as you can tell. Cheesy

Oh, and I also upped my CLO at about the same time. And continued to drink my beloved kombucha. Wink

I continued using my homemade CO/peppermint EO stuff. A couple times I used some Tom's of Maine.

I think the enamel was getting real thin- it had a wore-through look. Undecided

Just an FYI if you have taken any of the tetracycline antibiotics before pregnancy (more than 3 times), there is a risk of future children having discolored teeth. However, healthy bone/teeth supporting vitamins and nutrition can minimize this effect.  Wink

Hmm interesting, because while I never received any myself that reminds me of our one son who, during a long hospital stay, received all kinds of antibiotics and has one discolored tooth. However it is improving as I give him a calcium supplement.

I smiled at myself real big in the mirror this morning, something I guess I haven't done in a while because I totally freaked out!! My front teeth have always been fairly nice and white and suddenly they look almost transparent and you can see brownish spots in them. Huh

OK, after taking extra cal-mag and getting my teeth nice and white, I recently freaked out again when I looked in the mirror at brown teeth AGAIN. I had gradually stopped taking the cal-mag after they whitened up so I did start that again. After 2-3 weeks and NO improvement, in fact slowly getting worse, it occurred to my slow brain that I had also stopped taking CLO this summer. So, I'm taking plenty of that (as of 3 days or so) and am hoping that'll do it. Its just frustrating to have conquered it once and then have it happen again.

If anyone has any info on WHY this happens, I'd appreciate it. We eat a good NT/WAP diet (could be improved upon though) and I'm not pg or nursing right now. I have no pain or discomfort in my teeth, just transparent and ugly-looking. And its ONLY my 4 front teeth. Angry Undecided

Do you breathe through your mouth when you sleep?  A dry mouth causes an acidic environment which helps the bad bacteria to thrive...which errodes enamel.  You also may still be brushing too hard.  You don't want to bare down or brush aggressively...just gentle circles to remove the gook.

Here are some more thoughts on things that could contribute to an acidic mouth (I have learned a lot from this site):
http://www.zellies.com/store.asp?pid=9842
Quote
Damage in a dry mouth
Anyone with a dry mouth will be at greater risk of tooth damage. Without saliva there is no natural response to wash away the acids. People with blocked noses or who breathe through their mouths have less saliva. Allergies, sinus problems, exercise or even sleep can put you at risk for acid damage.

Tooth enamel dissolves when the acidity is less than pH 5.5.

In a healthy mouth, resting saliva pH should be 6.5 or higher.
Certain foods will raise the pH of your saliva.(e.g. Potatoes, milk, bananas, curry.) Zellies will make your mouth neutral (pH 7.0)
Water varies in pH. Evian water (pH 7.2). http://www.mineralwaters.org/
Hormonal imbalance may make a mouth acidic.
A dry mouth will be more acidic.
Gastric acids will make a mouth acidic.
Germs on dirty teeth produce acids and can make a mouth as low as pH 5.5.
After an acid attack in a clean mouth, it normally takes saliva about 20 minutes to return your pH to normal. In a mouth where teeth are coated with “acid-producing” germs, it may take an hour or more.

Imagine the continuous damage of sipping acidic drinks or eating acidic snacks every 10-15 minutes. If your saliva cannot neutralize your mouth, your teeth will stay at “cavity forming” acidic levels.

During the last trimester of pregnancy, saliva loses the ability to neutralize acids.

Obviously, this site is selling stuff...so take it with a grain of commercialism Smiley  but what it says makes some sense to me.  Dr. Eli's blog site is also full of info...and most of the items that she suggests for her brushing routine are available in a regular pharmacy/store.  Her suggested brushing and rinsing routine is something that she developed over her years of practice as a dentist, observing what did and didn't work for her patients.

This is mere speculation based on my other research, but my guess is the teeth need the calcium, but without the fatty acids, vit's A & D, you're not absorbing it without taking the Cod Liver Oil.

This is exactly my conclusion. When funds are tight and I'm not pg or nursing, I tend to not take care of myself as I ought. Tongue

Thanks for what you shared, hi_itsgwen. I'm doing some thinking on that.

OK, this is an overdue update, but the CLO and cal-mag did the trick! And I've been super faithful meanwhile with CLO but not as much with the cal-mag since I'm dealing with morning sickness...

Anyhow, I'm also thinking that regular toothpaste leaves enough residue on teeth that the brown doesn't show very quickly and once we use natural toothpaste it cleans up the residue and if the teeth are anything but perfectly white, it shows. Now, that's only my surmising based on our own experience (my man had the same thing happen to him) and some things I've heard from other folks on the issue.

And btw, we use a homemade toothpaste of coconut oil, olive oil, and essential oils. Love how it leaves our teeth feeling so clean.
