Krill Oil: What, When, Why & How Much?
« on: January 09, 2008, 12:05:15 PM » by rebeccahuff
This thread has been so informative for me. I have been taking the Carlsons and am not very happy with it. I am switching to the Blue ice, but I have a question.  Dr. Mercola recommends krill oil. What is the difference between cod liver oil, fish oil, and krill oil? Obviously, I understand there are different fish, but what is the other differences! I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I suffer from winter depression and I want to take the best stuff, plus being pregnant.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Does anyone on here take Krill oil?  If so, what brand and why do you prefer it over cod liver oil?  I've read Dr. Mercola's opinion on the two oils, but I also know he sells krill oil so I want to make sure I have unbiased opinions.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks!

I just Googled this and came across this info.  It comes from: http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/m217471.aspx#217471

NOTE ABOUT KRILL OIL:
WARNING: If you are allergic to shellfish, have a blood coagulation disorder, or are taking anticoagulants such as Warfarin (Coumadin), do not use. Also, Antarctic Pure Krill Oil is very stable and will last up to 3 years. However, do not store it in the freezer or refrigerator; temperatures higher than 100 degrees or lower than 50 degrees diminish effectiveness of the phosopholipid ingredients.

More on Krill Oil:

Krill oil, logically enough, comes from krill, which are small, shrimp like crustaceans that inhabit the cold ocean areas of the world, primarily the Antarctic and North Pacific Oceans. Despite their tiny size (one to five centimeters in length) krill are said to make up the largest animal biomass on the planet.

According to Neptune Technologies, the Canadian company that holds the patent for krill oil extraction, there are approximately 500 million tons of krill roaming around in these northern seas, 110,000 tons of which are harvested annually.

Krill oil, like fish oil, contains both of the omega-3 fats eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), but hooked together in a different form. In fish oil these omega-3 fatty acids are found in the triglyceride form whereas in krill oil they are hooked up in a double chain phospholipid structure. (The fats in our own cell walls are in the phospholipid form.) Attached to the EPA leg of the phospholipid is a molecule of astaxanthin, an extremely potent anti-oxidant. The phospholipid structure of the EPA and DHA in krill oil makes them much more absorbable and allows for a much easier entrance into the mitochondria and the cellular nucleus. In addition to EPA and DHA, krill oil contains a complex phospholipid profile including phosphatidylcholine, a potent source of reductive-stress-reducing choline, which also acts as a natural emulsifier.

Krill oil contains vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D and canthaxanthin, which is, like astaxanthin, a potent anti-oxidant. The anti-oxidant potency of krill oil is such that when compared to fish oil in tems of ORAC (Oxygen radical absorptance capacity) values it was found to be 48 times more potent than fish oil.

A number of studies have shown that krill oil is tremendously effective in reducing LDL-cholesterol, raising HDL-cholesterol, and lowering blood sugar. It has been shown to be effective in treating the pain and inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis and aches and pains in general. One large study showed that krill oil has tremendous benefits in terms of symptom reduction in PMS and dysmenorrhea. And it has been shown to be effective in the treatment of adult ADHD. In all these studies krill oil was tested against fish oil and a placebo.

My husband asked me to look into Krill oil.  So I was doing some research and then came here to see what everyone here said, too.

From what I have gathered so far, Krill Oil is good for the following (sorry couldn't figure out how to get the bullets to work correctly):
High in Antioxidants
High in Omega-3's
Anti-inflamatory
Lowers Blood Sugar
Has been effective in treating adult ADHD
One Antioxidant in it (astaxanthin) seems to be able to cross the blood brain barrier, providing even more protection for your brain
Can help relieve PMS symptoms
Can help relieve arthritis and joint pain
It also seems to naturally have a different structure to it than fish oils do.  This structure makes it much more absorbable and it does not perish as quickly as fish oil.

Here are some websites that I have read through on this subject.
http://altmedicine.about.com/od/herbsupplementguide/a/krilloil.htm
At the bottom it does say, "Krill oil should also be used with caution by people taking herbs and supplements that are thought to increase the risk of bleeding, such as ginkgo biloba and garlic."

In case anyone wants to read what Mercola says about it, here is the link.
http://krilloil.mercola.com/krill-oil.html
I do agree, though, that I want the research to be verified by someone not selling the supplement, also. Wink

Dr. Mercola also talks about the difference between CLO and Krill Oil.  The information was taken from this link down toward the bottom of the article.  This is what got us looking into Krill oil in the first place.
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/03/23/lawsuit-raises-fish-oil-supplement-concerns.aspx
He says this:
"Additional Problems Related to Cod Liver Oil
Certain cod liver oil products were also listed as severely contaminated. But as I’ve discussed on a couple of occasions recently, cod liver oil may not be a wise choice for other reasons as well.
Retinoic acid, a form of vitamin A found in cod liver oil, can block the activity of vitamin D by weakly activating the vitamin D response element on genes. Since vitamin D levels are crucial for human health, it is essential to have the proper ratio of vitamin D to vitamin A in your body.
I used to regularly recommend cod liver oil during colder months as it contains both vitamin A and vitamin D in addition to healthy omega-3 fats. These vitamins are essential for most everyone who cannot get regular sun exposure year-round.
But based on the more recent research into the interaction between these two vitamins I’ve changed my stance. I issued a revision of my long held recommendation for cod liver oil at the end of 2008. If you missed that important update, please take the time to review it now.
Since then, additional evidence points to the fact that the ratios of vitamin A and D may be of paramount importance in order to extract optimal health benefits, and most modern cod liver oil simply does not supply it in ideal amounts.
With both fish oil and cod liver oil facing a growing laundry list of problems, I believe there’s no better source of omega-3s than krill oil."

That being said, I did read on another site that Krill oil is a good source of Vitamin A, D and I think E.  So then wouldn't that also put Krill oil in the same boat?  It could just be that it is the form of Vitamin A (retinoic acid) that is in CLO that is the problem and that Krill Oil has a different form of Vitamin A?  That's another thing to look into.

Webmd has some information also.  They also state that Krill oil can slow down blood clotting.  They recommend that if you are going in for any surgery that you discontinue use at least 2 weeks prior to the surgery.
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-1172-KRILL+OIL.aspx?activeIngredientId=1172&activeIngredientName=KRILL+OIL&source=3

Here is a quote from this site:
http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2008/07/23/krill-oil-48x-better-than-fish-oil/
"A number of studies have shown that krill oil is tremendously effective in reducing LDL-cholesterol, raising HDL-cholesterol (up to 44% in some cases), and lowering blood sugar. In all these studies krill oil was tested against fish oil and not simply a placebo."

I have also read on a few different websites that Neptune Technologies (http://www.neptunebiotech.com/?cat=4&sub=1&lang=en) owns the patent for Krill Oil Extraction.  So it sounds like most of the Krill oil out there comes from this company.  However, I did find a manufacturer in China also.  Don't know - would need to do some more research on that one, too.

Well, I'm out of time for today.  Hope this helps!

Has anyone given consideration to the fact that krill are crustaceans and "unclean" whereas cod are "clean"?

Interesting point.  That is another thing I have recently been researching.  I am reading a book right now on the difference between the two and what it means for today.  There are some very good points in it.
