  Friable Cervix
« on: January 18, 2008, 10:26:18 AM » by mommie
HI ladies...hoping someone might be able to help me. My midwife just did an exam and said that I have a friable cervix and vaginal tissue. She did a pap so we'll get the results soon, but normally friable cervix is from hpv and my husband and I were both virgins when we got married and hpv is an std so that is not likely the cause...any help or ideas would be great.

Hi, I have dicussed this with a doctor before and she said that she has treated NUNS with hpv! She said anyone can get this, in many different ways even being a virgin. She said you can even get hpv from hot-tubs! Yikes!

any more ideas ladies...i just went back at my babies 6 month mark hoping it was just "friable" from having the baby ... although I figured it was NOT that  But yeah, it was red, bumpy, swollen and irratated (the cervix) and the v*aginal walls were irratated looking as well...one of the midwives in training recommended a phyto estrogen cream ... but I'm nervous about the estrogen therapy cancer stuff...

Owie! I've never heard about this before. Can a friable cervixe be cured  Huh I wonder if a soothing product would help the inflamed tissue during, um, intimate times. I use this product for hubby and I when I have a yeast infection (these get painful for me).

Praying for ya. Keep us posted.

O.kay so the midwife got the test results back and no abnormal cells. All good in that department but it also noted that there was atrophic cellular structure...which from what I can gather is deteriating cell structure? She was gonna look into more since she had never seen that before...any ideas on that ladies? I'm gonna keep posting in here and at the very least if someone else has this problem in the future maybe they can benefit from my research like I have  benefited from so many others on this site

From Varney's Midwifery:

"Friability of the cervix, as evidenced by its bleeding easily after obtaining the Pap smear... frequently accompanies cervicitis."

"Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix usually caused by and infection...but which may also be caused by irritation from injury, obstetric lacerations, mechanical devices, foreign objects, or allergic reactions."

What I could find on atrophic changes was under changes of perimenopause and aging.  A decrease in estrogen (long-term) causes changes in the female reproductive tract, including "thinning of the epithelium of the vagina and cervix."

I think I would ask your midwife to check for an infection, and then try using a product called Replens to help ease discomfort.  The phytoestrogen cream (I'm assuming this would be soy-based if you go looking for a natural alternative) might actually be just what you need.

Hope this is helpful...

thank you fair flowers...so you are the 2nd person who has mentioned replens to me...so I finally checked it out...but its more about adding moisture/lube it seems than anything else...is that right? I decided against an estrogen cream for now. I am eating a lot of flax seed since that is high in esrogen...gonna try to fix it w/ foods...wouldn't she  have seen an infection or say a cervical tear from previous birth, etc? thx again for looking into that 4 me

I believe it also has something to do with maintaining the proper, natural pH of the vagina.  Can't hurt to try it...

Found a little more information.  The website that this came from (I will NOT link to it) was specifically talking about vaginal dryness:

  *  Polycarbophil, the active ingredient in Replens™ pulls water into vaginal cells to restore and maintain healthy lubrication. It also increases alkalinity in the vagina, reducing vaginal infections.

    * Estrogen creams really do revitalize vaginal tissue, but may increase risk of endometrial cancer more than oral estrogen. Occasional, rather than regular, use minimizes risk.

Is this correct? I don't mean to question you Fairwinds, just want to know the truth. In my comments to more allopathic minded people regarding the ridiculous of Gardisil, I often say HPV is clearly an STD - therfore, not an issue if you're a virgin. If this is incorrect, I definitely want to know.

THANKS!

click on fact #11.  (sorry I can't copy & paste it)  ~L
http://www.hpv.com/index.html?WT.mc_id=GR06K

It quite frankly states that genital-to-genital contact (even if intercourse does not occur) is the only way to get HPV.  (However the CDC web page does say that it can rarely be passed from a mother to her infant during childbirth, sometimes infecting the infant's throat.)
For the record, nuns don't always have spotless pasts.  I have known many and some are reformed rebels, some are widows, some are victims of forced intimacy, etc., just like anyone else.          ~L

My midwife ASSURED me there was no way of getting HPV w/o sexual contact...I told her I lived w/ lots of girls who had TONS of STDS (we took teen preggo moms into our home) so I was a little paranoid despite me and hubby being virgins and she said there was NO WAY of getting it by drinking from them, sharing a toilet, etc, etc...to emphasize her point she explained I would have had to share a tampon with them! Shocked I know there are several different types of HPV...google HPV...skin and genital warts included...so maybe Fairwinds doc meant something else?
As to the Replens I bought some but never wound up using them cause the reviews seemed horrible, like tons of nasty yucky discharge! So I was a little nervous about that. I do seem to have some sort of yeast infection maybe (no discharge, just itch, but I've tried 1 and 3 day monistat w/ no results...getting some results w/ natural methods) BUT I think the replens would help my ph and probably resolve this issue. I do have pee sticks and can test my PH...I know I'm showing some luekocytes, trace...and my ph I think is 6.5, does anyone know where it is "suppose" to be

Hi mommie,

I found out recently that I have a friable cervix and my Pap came back clean also, so STIs or HPV nothing. My boyfriend and I were also virgins so I don't know what else it could be. I see a specialist in May, but can I ask if your issue was ever resolved??
Thanks!

Never resolved. I do believe it is a hormonal issue (lack of estrogen due to preggo/nursing for 5 years straight) (did I post that my midwife found atrophic cells although still being normal) I never tried any estrogen or phyto estrogen. I have had about 5 cycles now (more then I've had in a long time) and I was hoping that alone would balance me out, but I don't seem to be getting much better yet! YIKES! I'm thinking of trying a cleanse. I've also been told a shot of B vits would help with estrogen. Haven't done that yet either. Please keep me posted on your info.

I have had the same symptoms for years & my OBGYN told me I had a friable cervix.  During my most recent exam I asked her exactly what that meant.  She explained that the cervix is made up of 2 types of cells, skin cells & gland cells.  She said that my gland cells were more exposed than the average person (apparently the skin cells form a barrier over the gland cells) and with irritation from intercourse or papsmears it causes the bleeding.  She said it's nothing to worry about.   Hope this helps!

well, the weird thing is she said it was friable...but it doesn't bleed very often.
S*x is just painful...inserting a tampon or anything for that matter hurts. I also feel like I have a constant yeast infection, but no discharge...just irritation. I got my hormone levels back and nothing seems TOO bad, but I'm going to see someone tomorrow...so hopefully something is gonna fix this!
thanks!

Me too.  I wonder if you have vestibulitis.  I was just recently diagnosed with this.  Does sex hurt at entry too?  That's my problem, plus it burns and hurts everywhere during and after. Basically, you take a q tip and touch south east, south west, and the south part of the vestibule (entry).  It usually hurts the worst at the south or bottom part.  I don't have it that bad actually, which only me makes me feel badly for those who have severe cases.

Dr. Perry: "Let's talk about that Q-tip test for just a minute because I think that probably is the most neglected part of the physical examination in these women in causes of diagnosis of vestibulitis to be missed more often. Could you give us a little idea about where the examination should be taken?"

Dr. Gibbons: "Of course, the area that is in question here is known as the vulvar vestibule; vestibule is a familiar term - the entry way. This area of the body is demarcated by a line between the labia majora - the larger lips, and running down the base of the labia minora - the smaller lips, so that the tissue inside those smaller vaginal lips extending upward toward the hymen and including the hymen is what we refer to as the "vestibule." That area of the body also includes the urinary meatus - the outlet from the bladder and various glands that surround those structures. The physician then in examining that area uses a cotton tipped applicator, which is simply a Q-tip. Some physicians prefer that it be wet and others just take it dry. The secret though, is very, very light pressure along specific points in that area and where there is tenderness, asking the patient to characterize the tenderness on a scale of 0-10, whether it's no pain or exquisite pain and then plotting that on a diagram. Most physicians will find that in women with vestibulitis, the tenderness is most pronounced just below the hymenal margin and around the orifices of the so-called "Bartholin" gland ducts."

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yes, entry and then its fine and then after a few minutes it starts to hurt again. Weird...sigh...I'm wondering if its a combination of things...that is interesting mama Jen, cause we do perinial massage when I'm preggo and it always hurts more then I think it should an I have this weird thing my hubby calls my "4speed bump" Wink like a flap type piece of skin that keeps him from being able to do a smooth U shape when doing the massage (I'm guessing you're familiar w/ perienial massage?) They were mentioning a surgery remoing some skin in there...Hmmm...I'm wondering now if I have some entry issues and then some atrophy issues that are causing the pain after a few minutes...good gosh and I was thinking it was one and the same...but now I am thinking maybe its two. I'm so concerned about going to an OB cause I hear of how ladies with these issues goes to all these docs w/ all these tests and meds and no answers....sigh sigh sigh...I try not to think about it, cause I just start crying when I do...Def like black and blue in that lower entry area...well, thanks for another idea. maybe if I go to a doc with a bunch of idea myself we'll get somewhere. I keep thinking...God can just heal me and that would make everything MUCH easier and cheaper!! Smiley
