We paid $75 each for 4 day old nubians from the dairy where we were getting our milk (goats in lactation are considerably more).  The milk was around $10 a gallon so the goats have paid for themselves many times over.  I've never (knock on wood) had a case of mastitis with either goat and I've been milking them 3 years.  We worm regularly for parasites and it isn't that big of a deal.  Also, my nubian girls love me so much I can't imagine not having a pair of sweet milk goats.  Also, as far as time and effort, I can milk both goats out and have the milk back to the house in about 30 minutes.  It really isn't overwhelming and the abundance of milk is so nice.

It can be slightly overwhelming for the first little bit - just getting the hang of it...We have had goats for almost 5 years, and have Never had the vet out once. We have called the vet to ask Q, but that is it.
As far as buying them, you can probably find a family milker anywhere from free to $200. Ours are MUCH more expensive because we are working on show quaility, but I won't get into that right now Wink
Trust me, it's very easy, and my whole family LOVES it. Wouldn't trade it! This Summer, we were getting pretty good at milking each doe in less than 2 minutes:) Goats are very simple to care for too.

Thanks for the encouragement!  As I was reading stuff, it started to seem like so much to remember and do.  I was thinking "no way can we afford to have goats!"  I need to start asking around to see where I could buy some.  I discovered we are zoned "residential" even though we are not in town limits, so not sure how that works out for having animals.  So, just as an estimate, between food (what do you feed them, alfalfa?) and dewormer, how much do they cost per month?

We give our does good free choice alfalfa. Don't use dusty, moldy junk! I've seen people do this, and it is awful Tongue We also believe in giving grain...some people are no grain and grassfed, but for us we do grain! Our goats are producers, we show them, and our raw milk people are all very happy with it. You will have to choose.

dewormer,
For the wormer, it depends on how natural you want to be. Again, people fall on differant sides of the fence, and for us we use commercial wormer. Cydectin is what we are using right now (from Jeffers). We do that about 4x a year, and it doesn't cost much...haven't figured it out for sure though.

Our goats pay for themselves, and all of our other large smattering of animals - we just have 2 goats that we do milk shares on right now, but they pay for all of the above plus extra. Again, haven't figured out the details on how much they cost, but they are cheap!

My family likes milk...we probably drink a lot compared to most families our size. Plus having babies requires more of a need for milk. Anyway, I personally don't care for how goat milk tastes unless I'm drinking it fresh...as in the day it's milked! I am just picky about it I guess. I don't have a problem with cows milk. Anyway, I'm wondering if goats milk is an aquired taste or is it that you just like it or you don't??

Thank you for the suggestion.  I have tried several sources, both raw and pasteurized (and canned once, which was a much stronger taste).  I've also tasted raw cheddar-style cheese sold at the health food store.  It all had the same strong after-taste, though some were stronger than others.  I think it may just be me.  Maybe I just need to keep trying it until I get used to it.
yeah - some of us just DON'T like that goaty taste!  Grin I have had ppl tell me- 'try MINE'! but I have never had any that i liked... I will say that if its milked onto ice (as in: ice pack in the bucket) I can tolerate it on cereal, but just barely!. Oh well... my babies dont seem to mind, so thats the main thing!  Wink

Yeah, I agree. My son doesn't mind the taste either. I guess he doesn't know to dislike it because he's never really had anything else. My MIL is getting ready to take the last baby off one of the mama goats, so there's getting ready to be even more milk, and I'm gonna start doing the night milking and taking some fresh milk each evening for the next day. We'll see how that goes as far as taste. I'm gonna try making yogurt and kefir too and see if I like it that was as well.
