The words Natural Childbirth bring to mind all sorts of ideas, memories and emotions. Childbirth is and can be a wonderful experience for many women. One thing we all would like is for it to be just a little more bearable. I met a women last year shortly before the birth of my 6th child, who started asking me if I had ever used essential oils to help with my labors. I had never heard of using them before, but from what she was saying I was interested. So I got out all my books and went to the Library for more. WOW! I was sold! So I quickly ordered some essential oils to try and see for myself. For the last three weeks of my pregnancy I used Nutmeg essential oil in an almond oil base. I rubbed it on my lower belly once every night. Then during labor I used the Nutmeg and Jasmine essential oils. The aroma was wonderful alone, but they actually had a major positive effect on the labor and birth. They helped to speed up the process and helped with the pain! Yea! I was very thankful for having met that lady and trying it for myself. I won't have another birth without them. Yes, we do hope for more! They are Blessings! Anyway, I can't promise anything but it worked for me and I wanted to make it available for others as well. So do some research and or ask your doctor or midwife. Blessings Cory! Made with almond oil, essential oils of : jasmine, clary-sage, lavender and geranium. Use during labor. Apply externally to abdomen, lower back and up and down spine. To ease pain and hasten childbirth. Do not use during pregnancy, only for labor. (1 oz.)(As with all natural products, please consult your doctor before use)

Perceived benefits experienced by 100 Gentle Birth Formula Users include:
70% said they had less pain during labor and delivery
Not true for me.

72% experienced advanced dilation before discomfort was felt
Not true for me either, I was hurting from a 3.

83% said they had shorter and easier labor
My labor this time was much longer- nearly 12 hours, but hard labor was 2 hours.

87% experienced very little to moderate blood loss
Very little blood loss, but I've never been a bleeder, so who knows?

85% reported a shorter recovery time

Terrible afterpains, as usual, but otherwise I feel pretty good.  Smiley

It seemed to do nothing for me. If I had to do it again, I would just stick with the RRL and EPO and skip Gentle Birth. That's just my experience though!  Cool

We think that If humans lived now as we evolved, even very pregnant women would still be doing a lot of walking around, foraging for food or moving about by foot instead of by car.

I've just read through the entire thread as I was having the same issues with what labor prep herbs to get.  I'm from New Zealand and 31 weeks pregnant with number 3.  My first birth in Canada was an induction after my water breaking and I ended up having an epidural and got torn to shreds.  I had to have an operation here in NZ 18 months later to fix the scarring.  I was a bit nervous about no. 2 but had him naturally in the water which was fantastic and only one tiny tear but oh boy I screamed in agony, if the last hour of contractions wasn't bad enough the pushing phase was excruciating.  Needless to say I'm determined to do anything to help.  After a lot of research into the different products available I have ordered the Gentle Birth without the blue cohosh (not convinced it is entirely safe - do some googling) and decided it probably wasn't necessary in my situation anyway (never gone over and contractions are effective).  So if anyone is interested I'd just like to say that I'll be posting my results in late August as I found it helpful to read others results.

OK, to continue from the above post.  Have given birth a week ago to our third wee boy - 9lb 10oz so not that wee.  I went to 41 weeks (with the other two went to 40 and 39) and didn't want to face a medical induction so had an acupuncture induced labor which worked very well for me.  I think it also relaxed me as I was getting 'beside myself'.  I gave birth the night after the second session.  I highly recommend it as a natural way to get into labor - provided your body and the baby are ready, I don't think it works if you're simply not ready.  I had 12 hours or so of early labor that was totally manageable.  Then I had 5 hours or so of active labor of which the last two were pretty difficult.  I seem to do this thing where I only dilate in the last hour or two and it suddenly pings open.  My midwife checked me about 3 hours before birth and couldn't even reach my cervix.  I went home and then it really got cranking so we met at the hospital again and I was 8-9 cm.  Just made it.  I kept telling my husband to drive faster too, I knew it was close!  This happened with our second son too.  Anyway as far as the herbs go (Gentle Birth) I really felt that for the second stage it was more manageable than my last one.  My second son was excruciating all the way through the pushing with no let up in between contractions.  This time I had huge pressure in between but I got relief.  I felt overall it was better (OK it was my third but I still think they helped).  I am a very heavy bleeder and was really hoping for some improvement here and I got it.  No gushing afterwards and the bleeding has been much better than normal over the last week.  I even had disposable nappies/diapers to use at night so I didn't make such a mess but haven't had to use them!  After pains too have been mild, they kept asking me in the hospital if I wanted pain relief for them but it wasn't necessary.  My uterus too contracted very quickly and anyone that checked me commented on how well it had gone down.  Also I have felt a much shorter recovery time and after the initial 3-4 days I have been buzzing about the house like normal and feel great.  I would highly recommend Gentle Birth and would certainly use it again if in the highly unlikely event we have a fourth!

these oil rubs sound interesting.  Anyone know of any reasons why they would be harmful during prengancy and labor?  If they can only help and not hurt, I will try them.  Thanks

This is my first time using GB.  I have a question.  Does it cause diarrhea?  Tmi, I know.  But I've been taking it since about 35 wks. 3 days and all of a sudden this week (37 wks)  I have had diarrhea.  It's the fourth day of it now and I'm wondering what's up.  Am I having prelabor symptoms or a reaction to GB building up in my system?

The ingredients and their actions are listed here: http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,15472.msg167505.html#msg167505 (reply #41, I think).

I don't think it's related...could be pre-labor clean out, but that's a big long.  Huh

Just curious, has anyone thought of taking half the normal dose of Gentle Birth and half the normal dose of the 5W to get the benefits of both?
In other words once one reached the full dosage they would be taking both 1/8 tsp of the Gentle Birth and 1 capsule of the 5W three times a day.

Just wondering. Wink

Just a random thought on the subject... I took a Gentle Birth formula that had Squaw Vine in it for all 3 of my babies, and they were all very late. My midwife began to suspect (after having a mom who's labor completely stopped with Squaw Vine- not good during labor in that case) that Squaw Vine was too effective in relaxing me for labor to start. With baby number three, I stopped taking the Formula at my due date because this theory occurred to us, and that baby was only 2 days late (compared to 2-3 weeks). I'm not going to take a formula with Squaw Vine in it again, just in case!   Just a thought...

I took 5W with my first baby and he was 42 weeks. I took Gentle Birth with my second baby and he was 41 weeks. I'm sure the squaw vine effects people differently. I don't think it had anything to do with me being late though...that's just me. Also, I was not impressed with 5W, but I was definitly impressed with Gentle Birth. My first labor was loooong, and I wouldn't dilate, plus I pushed for 3.5 hrs...he was posterior though. My second labor (GB baby) was 4 hrs. and I pushed like 4 times...he was anterior. So whether the labor prep herbs helped or my body was just ready being my second baby, I don't know...either way, I'm definitly going with GB again next time!
