  Hiatal hernia
« on: February 10, 2008, 12:55:08 PM » by sweetestday
My grandpa was just diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. He has had several bouts of vomiting black, coffee ground type stuff that may contain old blood, or bile that was backing up from his liver. The doctors weren't sure. He's been hospitalized twice for it, and has had to have his stomach pumped. He is living with my parents, and they are wondering what they can do to keep him from having these vomiting bouts. What would be the best foods that would be easily digested, and wouldn't relax those muscles that the stomach is protruding through?
Right now they have his head board raised to keep his head elevated... They are avoiding coffee, highly acidic foods, big meals, etc.
Right now Grandpa is having a lot of abdominal discomfort, and he has not had a bowel movement since the last hospitalization. (Last Tues.) He began vomiting again last night, but has been OK since this morning.
If there is anyone out there with experience with this problem, we'd really appreciate any advice on things that have helped.

These are interesting, but might be too crazy for someone to believe, but anyway read this thread replies #9 thru #14.

If he tries any of these methods, please let us know how it works out.  Wink

My grandpa's almost 90 years old, and has Alsheimer's pretty bad. I did read some of those posts when I was searching for a similar topic, but didn't think this would be a good idea for him.  Wink If it were me, I'd definitely try it!  Cheesy

That's a thought... I'll see what my folks think. I'm not sure how cooperative Grandpa would be with that. He's a mild mannered man, but with the Alzheimer's, he gets very agitated at the hospital and yanks out his tubes. I'm not sure how he'd handle a chiropractor.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... with the hernia, his stomach protrudes almost all the way through the muscle, into the chest cavity, and then has a twist to it. Doesn't sound comfortable!

My hubby was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. During some research we thought it would be good for him to take some super enzymes (i was getting some anyways) because there tends to be some problems with digestion. I gave him one before Thanksgiving (his first) and it seemed to work fine. Sat I gave him 2 AFTER he ate and complained about feeling real full. He soon developed some nasty heartburn. We were out and about and he was desperate so he stopped and bought some Pepto and that took care of that. I'm just wondering if maybe it had to do with the hernia? or that he took it on an already full stomach? not sure. any thoughts?

I think I am being blessed with this, I constantly feel as though I have a super-sized Supermom in my throat and can't lay down with out feeling like I'm going to puke, I am constantly backed up, and have off and on pains in gallbladder and sternum regions, I always feel full but get headaches and nauseous if I don't eat, and yes I do have Major back troubles (who wouldn't after a Tornado?) but we don't have the $ for a Chiropractor. Undecided
My first actions will be fast with Epsom Salt cleanse and ultra water push (I'm dehydrated as well- which is obvious because I'm backed up).
The jumping of a chair thing isn't working for me.
Any advice welcome!!!! Huh

Slippery Elm bark is supposed to work wonders on hiatal hernias, and I think it really does work, as I have made a tincture for my DH that he has taken (off and on) over the last 1-1/2 years to help with his.  Actually, I started out adding a 1/2 cup of SEB to the Jungle Juice recipe from Bulk Herb Store, b/c my DH needed help with other things also, and this just made it easier to take altogether.  Before this he was diagnosed w/ a sliding hiatal hernia (misdiagnosed, I believe, as his symptoms did not match the description for the sliding HH - #1 being pain every time you swallow, and that was not his problem.)  He actually has a paraesophagel HH (based upon the description and other issues we figured out).  His doctor put him on Prevacid for over a year, and according to the Pharmacology on Prevacid, a patient is not to be on that for more than 4-8 weeks.  I was livid with that doctor.   Shocked  When the other "problems" showed up with my husband, I took him off the Prevacid myself, and made the tincture for him.  Not to sound too haughty, but it was just ridiculous.

Anyway, I would look into slippery elm bark, esp. on BHS and in The How To Herb Book.

Hiatal Hernia - Prevention & Curing Protocol

There are natural cures for Hiatal Hernia that do not involve the use of pharmaceutical drugs. They involve restoring the biochemical balance of the body, and making dietary and lifestyle changes designed to improve one's general health.

Here's another article on diagnosing/treating a hiatal hernia (starting on page 2). It's quite thorough and complete with a fairly detailed explanation of how to self-treat the problem. It also follows up with how to find a health-care practitioner to help you if you choose to use a professional instead.

here's a thought to ponder...research. My husband has been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. He has discovered over the past few weeks that when he eats a big breakfast he ends up with pain in the evening from the hernia. We had noticed he was only getting "attacks" at night at the same times and then it became on certain days -the days we would eat a bigger breakfast. He would feel the pain begin in the afternoon but would be full blown in the evening and last until early mornings. Ibupofren is the only thing that  helps dull the pain by the way so he can sleep some. So he now avoids big breakfasts and sticks with yogurts and cereal. Big breakfast even being just an egg and tater burrito.
So he knows not to do it but it would be interesting to understand WHY that happens? any thoughts?
