Yes, cloves are safe to take during pregnancy, if taken in responsible doses.   Grin
If you search you will find (as usual) Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.  Do not take if you are pregnant or nursing......
On the other hand, I know that many midwives recommend clove tea to help reduce nausea and relax a mother. Or, chew clove buds to take care of pain due to a toothache if you are pregnant and wish to avoid pain medications.
During different phases of pregnancy hormones can cause many women to have trouble relaxing and going to sleep.  You may or may not have success with using clove tea because this is very hormone related, but it is worth a try.  I would recommend 1/4 - 1/2 cup rather than a full cup.  Or a shorter brewing time (hence less strength) and see if that works first rather than the Big dose I listed above.
Caution:  Do NOT cloves take if you are taking medication for blood clotting disorder!

I just took two clove balls, then I was reading what else they are good for and it says not if preg or nursing.  I am nursing. IF there was a problem do you know what it would be?  I wish things would say why not instead of just not. Smiley  I already took them so.....I don't exclusively breastfeed anymore. She is 10 months so just curious. Thanks.

For anyone who takes DG licorice - yes, deglycerinized licorice is excellent for the adrenal glands BUT you have to take breaks from it.  It is recommended that DG licorice be taken for no more then 7 days at a time every few weeks.  For someone will severe adrenal fatigue (see the adrenal fatigue thread) I would highly recommend an adrenal glandular that can be taken daily instead.

Patti,
Do you have any idea WHY you are supposed to take breaks? Is there a particular book I can get more info about this from? I have more than 2 doz. herbal books & don't recall having ever ran across anything about taking breaks from licorice. I would appreciate more info. Thanks. Blessings ~herbalmom

Yep I read  Dr. Richard Bernstein book several years ago. He certainly is one smart dude, it was nice reading it because he has went threw some of the same things and suffers with diabetes like me so he understands the life long struggle.

I have put some of his teachings to use. But I must admit that I have not been a good girl this year at all when it comes to food. Of course Im not piggen out and going over board but still I need to control myself more. Embarrassed

The only troubles I have with Dr. Richard Bernstein teachings is the way he does not even eat fruit. I consider fruit to be Gods candy and I love it so much. We have black raspberries, backberries, wild strawberries, wild plums, apple trees, mullberrie trees, pear tree, wild grapes all growing on our land so  summer time is full of lots of fresh fruit eating
for us. In the summer me and the kids go outside and eat our breakfast right off the trees and vines.  But thats something that can be controlled.

Its been maybe 3 years since i read his book and this year I have been so overwlemed I forgot about his book and teachings. I had best dig his book back out and get busy re-reading it.

I really could use prayer on this issue because having carbs all around me is not easy. My family wants carbs, my hubby freaks if he dont have carbs and carbs are everywhere I go. Carbs are at church, in town,at friends and family homes, my home, its like carbs  have over taken and are planning to kill me slowly. Undecided LOL. those blasted carbs anyways ways, LOL.

But really carb addiction seems to be a real problem for a lot of diabetics and for those on the road to becoming a diabetic.

Hey I know what my cure should be! I need to singe off my taste buds and rip off my nose so I cant smell or taste  carbs anymore. Roll Eyes Then and only then will I be hole again! Just joking.  Cheesy
Why did Adam and Eve have to go and sin anyways? If they had not sinned then we would be disease free right now. Well im going to give them a peice of my mind when I get to heaven. LOL. Cheesy just joking. I know when I get to heaven I will not longer care about that.

By the way did you know heaven is home sweet home? The home we have never been to but will be  some day? Home sweet home is where Jesus is, where I long to be some day. By the way I have already asked God to please fix me up a giant buffet full of fruit and ice cream in heaven, ya think He will do that for me?  Cheesy  Wink  Grin  Huh  Smiley

Hi Herbalmom,

Here's a blurb from one of my natural healing books:

"Licorice derivatives have been recommended as a standard support for ulcer sufferers in Europe.  Caution:  should not be used during pregnancy, nor by persons with diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, severe mentrual problems or a history of stroke.  Should not be used on a daily basis for more then seven days in a row as this can result in high blood pressure in persons with previously normal blood pressure.  Extended use can cause high blood pressure, water retention, and low potassium levels."

pg. 102 Prescription for Nutritional Healing"

I actually fall into the category of diabetes (pre-diabetic), menstrual problems, and I did have it cause higher blood pressure (which I didn't mind for my normal 95/60 is just a little too low for feeling good), and major water retention.  Most of those symptoms I saw after two weeks of straight use.  I think that as long as a week or two is given between weeks taking it then it's an excellent herb for adrenal support, etc.  Just need to use it wisely and properly.  For folks with severe adrenal fatigue (needing daily support) I would recommend something like Isocort which is a glandular.  I can't have a week or two without the cortisol but for those who just need to strengthen their adrenals but they are still functioning, I'd recommend the licorice root on a week, off a week, etc. etc.

It's true that you are not supposed to take licorice more than two weeks in a row, because it raises blood pressure.  In fact, mine says it right on the side of the licorice box.  Try that first.  But I am not sure if it is for everyone or just people with high blood pressure.

HIO,

It actually applies to everyone.  My blood pressure is normally 95/60 and it went up to 120/80 when I was taking it continuously.  I actually felt better with a higher blood pressure but for people who would be a normal 120/80 a rise as large as mine would put them too high.  I don't know if mine would have continued to rising because I stopped the licorice pretty quick when I saw that.

I'm asking a question for my mom.  She's 60 years old.  Anyway for several years now she has had trouble sleeping at night.  She wakes up often and sometimes can't get back to sleep, etc.

Does anyone know of a good starting point in trying to figure out what the problem might be?

Her diet isn't terrible, but not great.  She cooks from scratch, etc.  But uses lots of white potatoes, white flour, etc.
I really want to help her....I'm just not sure how to go about it.

Thanks

I think before you look at food related issues, you may want to have her think about her schedule.  For instance, is she watching TV, etc. right before bed?  This can be very stimulating.  How much caffeine does she consume and at what times?  Does she nap at all throughout the day and when?  Is she under a great deal of stress?

I know that sometimes it helps me a lot to take a hot bath and then drink a cup of tea to relax me enough to go to bed.  For instance Sleepytime Tea always is really great.

This may not be your mom's reason for sleeplessness, but it is always easier to approach these sorts of issues before you approach ones to do with nutrition, etc.

DH had a major problem with getting good sleep, and these are some of the issues we made sure were taken care of first.

Hope you find what you are looking for for your Mom.

my mom is the same age and has had this same problem for a long time.  she has also had menopausal problems for a long time, hot flashes etc.  she doesn't consume any caffiene, but has the same type of diet.  although she doesn't eat much bread at all or potatoes, because she cut them out to keep weight off.  she does watch TV religiously every night though.  hmmmm...........

I'll check out that thread.

She (and my Dad) do watch TV every night.  Usually she falls asleep in front of the TV and then goes to bed.  (probably problem number 1)
She does drink coffe...but I don't think she drinks it at night.  I can't remember for sure.
Thanks for the tips.

She HAS had antibiotics in the past, not recently.  She's not on medication.

I'll have to ask her some of these things.

Anyone who's EVER had antibiotics is at high risk of Candida overgrowth.  Initially, symptoms may be non-existent or limited to small outbreaks normally associated with yeast, but after weeks or months without treatment or supplementation of probiotics to replenish what the antibiotics destroyed, other symptoms can begin to appear sometimes very gradually.  This causes many to believe that their symptoms are somehow not related to each other or to the most probable cause.  I recommend you look into her symptoms closely and read the information in this forum on Candida over-growth and possibly leaky gut syndrome as insomnia is on the list of probable symptoms of both.

I am also five weeks away from delivery and have a hard time sleeping most nights but I know it's because I sleep in too late and then I'm not ready for bed at night. If I could make myself get up earlier in the morning say around 7 or even 8 a.m. I would sleep better because I did it a few times and it works, lol. But also I found when I can't sleep at night, I get up, stretch my legs, arms, and the whole body real good and go right to sleep, WORKS!!! It's worth a try, I know what you'r going through, I get the RLS also, but now less often. Good luck, let us know if this works for you!

My husband takes 1 mg of Melatonin every night 20 min. before bed time and he has no trouble falling asleep and no longer wakes up in the middle of the night.
You can find Melatonin at almost any drug store even Wal-Mart sells it in the vitamin section. Melatonin is something your body produces so I don't think there would be any harm taking it in pregnancy, but I would research it just in case.
I've never had a problem with falling asleep thankfully nor waking up, but I have taken it a time or 2 when I was all worked up over a situation and didn't need to lay there and mull it over and over and over  Wink It works great and doesn't give off an "effect" except sleep...

I've been looking into melatonin for my 7 yo who has developed insomnia.  He used to be out as soon as he hit the pillow, but for the last few months he lays there wide awake until 11pm or so.  Anyway, another person posted this on the GFCF kids forum and I thought it may be helpful to someone else too.   Smiley

Melatonin - The Sleep Master An emerging role for this over-the-counter supplement in the treatment of autism.
Jaak Panksepp, Ph.D.
Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green, OH One of the most common and most troubling times we experience is when we or our children cannot fall asleep effectively. Autistic children appear to be especially prone to this problem, and in has been estimated that more than half exhibit some disturbance in sleep patterns. This suggests some form of deficit in the brain systems that normally promote sleep. During the past decade there has been great progress in understanding the normal brain mechanisms which sustain restful sleep. Since a great number of sleep promoting substances exist in the brain and body, any of them might be deficient in neurological condition we call autism. Here we will focus on one of the major factors, melatonin, which is presently proving to be a remarkably effective natural sleeping aid not only for restless autistic children but also their often bedraggled parents. As many parents have already discovered, this natural sleep molecule is presently available over-the-counter
at many health food stores and distributors (although the ever present danger exists that special-interests will succeed in coaxing the FDA into taking this safe and effective aid off the shelves, as has already been done for several other important supplements, most notably tryptophan). Of course, as with any powerful and effective substance, there are certain guidelines that one should follow to maximize benefits and avoid problems. Although there are sound theoretical reasons for believing that autistic children may be manufacturing either too much melatonin (see Chamberlain & Herman, 1990) or too little, our own viewpoint has been that many kids do not secrete enough (see Panksepp, Lensing, Leboyer & Bouvard, 1991). Unfortunately, there presently is simply not enough good data to decide which viewpoint is correct. However, the fact that melatonin can stabilize and promote normal sleep and daily bodily rhythms is presently certain. However, it is important to learn
how to use this remarkably safe and powerful substance wisely. After briefly summarizing how melatonin works in the brain, we will share some important advice in the proper use of melatonin (including when it should be given, how much should be given, and what to do if melatonin stops working, as sometimes does happen). The first thing that is important to know is that our brains contain a wonderful clock-like mechanisms that normally keeps time with about a 24 Hr. period, but its accuracy is controlled by many factors such as light (i.e.,.., day-night cycles) and various brain chemicals, especially melatonin. This clock-like control center is situated in two small clusters of neurons at the base of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) which, as the name implies, are situated directly above the optic chiasm, the place where half the nerves from each of our eyes cross over to the opposite halves of our brains. The many output pathways from the SCN control
practically all behavioral rhythms that have been studied, from feeding to sleep. When both nuclei are destroyed, animals scatter their behavior haphazardly throughout the day instead of maintaining a well-patterned routine of daily activities. Our own natural melatonin secretions, which normally occur during the early morning hours when we have our deepest sleep, coordinates the accuracy of the SCN clock. People who have lost their sight, and hence are unable to coordinate their bodily clock via the influence of natural day-night cycles, are able to stabilize their rhythms by taking small amounts of melatonin at exactly the same time each day. And that is really the secret to proper melatonin use--it should be given only once a day in small amounts, and the proper time is about half an hour before one's normal sleep-time. Within our bodies, melatonin is naturally produced within the pineal gland, a glandular organ nestled between the cerebral hemispheres, that the great
French philosopher Descartes once proposed to be the "seat of the soul." In that gland, melatonin is synthesized in two steps from the precursor neurotransmitter serotonin. Pineal stores of melatonin are typically released into the circulation when illumination diminishes, and may help explain why most of us sleep better when the lights are off. During those morning hours when melatonin levels begin to diminish, birds begin to sing and we also tend to wake up, restored, to start our daily activities. It is easy to understand why lack of sleep might increase behavioral and psychological problems during the day. In addition, melatonin does a remarkable number of beneficial tasks in the body: Not only is it a powerful inducer of sleep, but it also regulates a variety of other bodily processes ranging from brain maturation to the vigor of our immune responses. It has been found to retard the growth of some cancers, and quite independently of that beneficial effect, it can also
alleviate certain forms of anxiety and depression. Most remarkably, given in the drinking water, it has increased life-span in various experimental animals by about 20%. It also helps control the onset of puberty during adolescence. In short, melatonin exerts many beneficial effect on the brain and body, but parents are well advised to follow certain guidelines in its use as a sleep-promoting agent:
WHEN? It should be given only once a day, about half an hour before the regular sleep-time. Supplementing with additional melatonin in the middle of the night may be effective, but it is not a smart policy, for that can shift the biological clock in chaotic and undesirable ways.

HOW MUCH? Although melatonin is very safe (people have consumed grams each day for many day with no ill effects), very small amount can go a long way. Commercially available preparations usually come in 2.5 or 3 milligram (mg) tablets, and a young child should do well on a third of this amount. The higher amounts will produce deeper sleep, but the hormone may still be circulating at quite high levels in the morning, and there are reasons to believe that is undesirable.

POTENCY CHANGE? Melatonin usually does not diminish in its effects even with prolong use, but for unknown reasons, this is not the case in all individuals. If a low dose of melatonin that has been effective for some time seems to be losing its effect (i.e., tolerance is setting in), one is wiser to stop giving the supplement for a while rather than increasing the dose. Some parents seek to restore the desired effects by increasing the doses, but that only seems to intensify the tolerance process. It is better to take a week to a month off, and then see whether sensitivity has returned. In our experience, sensitivity is usually restored in this way. Many autistic children that have been receiving melatonin on a regular schedule appear to exhibit benefits above and beyond the improvements in sleep. They are more "with it" during the day. These may be the side-benefits of the still mysterious restorative processes that sleep provides for all of us. Additional benefits may
arise from the stabilization of body rhythms that may have been out of synch before the melatonin supplementation.

Although we do know that melatonin and sleep have many bodily benefits, we do not have adequate evidence about the many "hows and whys." Our knowledge of such matters has not progressed much beyond Shakespeare's speculation that the function of sleep is "to knit up the raveled sleeve of care" even though modern thinkers are more likely to suggest that "sleep restores brain neurochemistries and other bodily resources that have been depleted by waking activities." Melatonin appears to be a prime guardian of such restorative processes, and without it, our lives become raveled indeed. It is likely that the for presently unknown reasons, the brains of some autistic children are deficient in this important chemistry. If so, early supplementation with this hormone may be essential for normalizing development. Unfortunately we know little about such matters, and only future research can give us the answers that we desperately need now.

I'm having trouble staying asleep.  I take 5htp with melatonin (150 mg of 5htp) and also take 5htp during the day to try and help my "fight or flight" thing my body seems to be doing all the time.  I wake up at about 12-1 am and have trouble getting back to sleep.  Last night, my restless legs started up again.  Anti-anxiety pills helped, but I stopped taking them wanting to find a more natural solution.  Any suggestions?  I'm tired!

Hello! I have been struggling with this question, and have asked my pharmacist, as well as a helpful woman at our local health food store. I can't seem to get an answer. Would someone be able to help with this question? How long can you take 5htp? I have read that it shouldn't be taken long term...like more than a month. Then, I have also read that it's ok to take long term. Also, if you take the 5htp at night with the melatonin, can this combination be used long term to help with sleep? Lastly, for those of you who have taken 5htp(without the melatonin) during the day, did it make you sleepy?

I have been on a drug called Elavil for almost three years, and have tried unsuccesfully to get off of it four times. I get up to three weeks off, and my body and sleep goes crazy, then I jump back on the Elavil. This time, My husband wants us to have a game plan to jump into when I go off the ELavil. (Elavil is an anti depressant that was prescribed to me for fibro. type symptoms, and insomnia. What I didn't know when I started taking it, was that it is so hard to stop taking it. Does anyone know how long the Elavil should be out of my system before I would start, taking something like the 5htp? Should I piggyback it together?

I am sorry I have rambled... I am kind of desperate about getting some advice. Thank you in advance for anyone who can help me out.

God's blessings on you, Denise Smiley

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a good experience with valerian root. My sister just asked me if there is an herb she can take to help her sleep and relax during the day while she adjusts to night shift. Being new to herbs i found a few things in  the How to Herb Book but was wondering how well the mixture using valerian root, wild lettuce and capsicum worked and if the valerian root would be enough to work on it's own. Or perhaps there is another combination that works better altogether? She is currently drinking camomile tea and it is not relaxing her enough to sleep. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

After my son passed away I had trouble sleeping, cried myself to sleep mostly.  The doctor prescribed Ambien.  I took it but when it was gone I wanted the natural alternative.  I took Valerian Root capsules (found at Shopko).  They worked just as good as the prescription without the side effect of being groggy the next day.  Maybe it was the placebo effect, but I still take them if I am over-tired and can't shut my brain down.

There is a "nitey night" tea for kids she could try I think by traditional medicinals. I could check.  It doesn't have Valerian but it has other calming herbs.

I make a tincture with valerian root, passion flower, and St. Johns wort.  It is very relaxing, nonaddictive, and it works like a charm!  I like the tincture delivery as it is fast, easily available and transportable, and takes only a half a dropperful.  I only use it occasionally, but a couple of the folks that get it from me use it on a regular basis and are extremely pleased with the blend.

Another good relaxing herb is skullcap.  My herbal pregnancy book suggests it for calming during labor.  It also works well to settle you down.  It only takes about 20 drops of tincture in a glass of water.

The Chinese used a combination of herbs that included Fushen and Dragon Bone, Ginger, Licorice, Ginseng, Cinnamon, Oyster Shells and a few other things that are not so well known to Western Herbalists. I think the oyster shells are just in there for calcium which has a calming effect on the body. Speaking of which, warm milk works but not strongly.

I have had trouble with falling asleep.  Taking the evening primrose oil has helped tremendously.  I think I am/was hormanally imbalanced therefore causing the insomnia and the EPO is great fix for that.

What is the ratio of herbs you use?

I use them in equal portions.  I advise starting with 5 to 10 drops in a small glass of water and work up to what works for you.  I have a couple of friends with insomnia that are using this with great results.

Varlerian root tea works for me.  Puts me out as well as Xanex but with no hangover.

For the past several weeks I have been falling asleep just fine, but I wake up and am up for hours. I started drinking coffee again (only in the morning) just to survive. I bought a valerian tincture but I am still waking. This is wearing me down. Can anybody help me? I am getting ready to resort to Tyelnol PM just so I can sleep a full night. I know this works because I took 2 by accident at my mohters house. I slept for 14 hours! This is not ideal though.
