What is his temp, and how old is he?
102 or under we usually let it go.  If it is higher, or interfering with sleep, then we might do a dose of Tylenol.  You could try to reduce it with tepid bath.
Do you have garlic and olive oil around?  You could make a paste for his feet.  If you have coconut oil, with the other two you could make goot.

Hi CountryCork,

I just found a fevers thread and posted there.  I've just tried the egg white thing.  I can have hubby get garlic on his way home, I only have minced garlic in my fridge and I don't know how long that can be in there - it might not be so good.  He's been at 103 all day now.  He's sleeping fine, just lays on my bed without any fuss.  I've been next to him all day and I'm just trying to get him to drink water when he opens his eyes.  Do you think this could be the flu?

Girly,
It sounds like he really needs to get hydrated.  Can you get him in a warm bath for 20 minutes?  you can do that several times a day.  Adding ground ginger will help him sweat and bring down the fever.  A catnip enema would work very well to hydrate some and bring the fever down, too.  Push fluids in any way you can.

Might this be what my little guy has - he is feverish and a bit croupy.  He's not coughing often but some and it sounds awful.  He's been going through periods of labored breathing all day.  I wanted to get to the HFS for some items but he's not been out of my bed and he has wanted me here right next to him all day.  He's roasting and I've avoided meds all day (one doseage in the middle of the night).  I have nothing to give him right now though because I haven't been able to leave the house.  Should I give him ibuprofen or just let him be as he is - totally miserable Sad  I suspect it is about to get worse as evening is upon us - and when my dh comes home he's probably going to want to give him some syrup or another if he continues to look terrible.  I'm at a loss as to what I should do right now.  Is it bad to let his fever just run like it is?

I gave my 21 mos old tylenol when she got above 102 degree fever.  I tried the egg whites with the 105, and it just did not come down.  I will let her go with nothing and run the fever below 102.  She broke her fever yesterday, and another important thing for her is I am having to keep her down.  Yesterday, I let her get up for a wee bit and she relapsed really quick.  You know how kids are, though, break the fever, run around.

Oh, and also, Dara posted a very helpful article in the Adenovirus thread.  I connected this discussion over there. I apologize, but I had no idea this Adenovirus was what it was, and I didn't know there was a thread until late yesterday.  Here is the link, and the Adenovirus thread is still on the front page:

I need some suggestions on hydrating my 7mo. old. He has been very sick for over a week. I have been trying to get him to take fluid and he refuses, he will not nurse. I have given him tepid baths w/ epsom salts and either eucalyptus or cinnimon oil; enenemas made w/ red rasp. leaf or a drop of garlic oil. I only give him a little fluid at a time so he doesn't "dump". I rubbed him down w/castor oil aftrer his tepid bath last night,, that seemed helpful. How often should I bath him? Are epsom salts dehydrating? How often should I give him an enenema? Any other suggestions for coaxing a nursed only baby to take fluids (he is even refusing the breast now, and will not take a bottle or cup)?

He's battled w/ear infections (I have had to give hime 5 doses of garlic oil drops -out of 5 kidos I've never had to do this). Now his lymphatic system is not drainig. He has knots behind his ears and down his neck. I have been rubbing garlic oil, tiger balm and a castor oil/ cinnimon oil mix onto his lymph nodes at different times. His backed up lymphs prob. have a lot to do with being dehydrated; but, I was hoping for a thought on what else I could do to help w/drainage.

Thanks for the help-
A very worried mommy  Huh

FYI: After writing all this I realized I had not given him an an enema AND a bath with rub down. I did both and walla seems to be hydrating! He decided to nurse, though not vigorously. Still would like some guide on how often to give enenemas if any one has an idea. Also lymphs still swollen.- thanks!

How is your little guy now?

A couple of suggestions:

Baths - Skip the epsom salts, sea salt and baking soda.  Those are for detox and aches and pains, and can be dehydrating.  Use plain warm water plus essential oils or herbs and spices.  Ginger promotes sweating so a ginger bath can help break a fever.  Eucalyptus for respiratory congestion (just a drop! he is so young).  Lavendar for calming.  Oatmeal for soothing the skin.  Look on www.mountainroseherbs.com for a comprehensive lsit of actions and contraindications for herbs and essential oils.

Use hydrating baths several times a day!  It always makes mine feel better.  DO NOT let him get chilled as that will drive a fever up.

A cool mist humidifier may help by keeping the air moist.  Dry air and a fever will really dry out the body.

Fever - I have had good luck with a catnip enema to empty the bowel (very important) and reduce fever, followed by a plain or ginger bath.  You may also use catnip tea by mouth.

Drinking - small frequent sips are absorbed better than a large amount.  Since you are looking at possible dehydration, you might want to add a pinch of good quality sea salt to whatever he is taking by mouth.  For a recipe look here:
http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,5496.msg57784.html#msg57784

Enemas - these can be helpful.  In adults in serious disease states enemas can be given 3 or 4 times a day.  I would not use them that frequently with an infant, though.  Maybe once a day for a couple of days.

I found this on www.gentlebirth.org/archives/nausea.html  and similar advice on other midwifery sites:
Some might need a cleansing enema first; then a slightly sweet- slightly salty liquid is given. Pedialyte will work.. so will one tablespoon of sugar to one teaspoon salt to one quart of water (rough home equivalent for rehydration solution), some would advise weak raspberryl eaf tea and a little honey (and perhaps a pinch of salt). Give it warm, SLOWLY; you will probably be surprised at how well this is absorbed and tolerated. [note: do not use honey with infants under 1 year.]

For shock and collapse due to hemorrhage or any other cause, the patient may be given an enema of saline solution. the enema is prepared by mixing a heaped teaspoonful of common salt in a pint of boiling water. About a teacupful of this, cooled to a temperature of 100 deg F., which is warmish but not hot, should be injected slowly into the rectum and repeated at intervals of three to four hours.

Swollen lymph nodes - these may take quite a while to regress.  Gentle lymph massage once or twice a day would be fine.  No vigorous rubbing!  You should not actually move the skin, just a light stroking motion.  Castor oil massage can be helpful for draining the nodes.

Does this sound like the flu?  I'm exhausted, have a dull headache, an earache in the making, sinus pressure but barely any runny nose and generally feel miserable.  Also, it stings to have my eyes open too much so I am actually typing htis with my eyes closed... what advice can you offer me?  I'm too tired and miserable to read too much.  Thanks.

I think it's low grade fever now but I'm too miserable to go downstairs and get the thermometer.  Last night I was freezing and I'm currently tucked in under my electric blanket surrounded by all my kiddos - not too cold right now but I was last night - even with the blanket on high.

Okay this is way out there but I wonder if anyone might know something about this.
I'm reading a book called "Beyond Antibiotics - 50 or so Ways to Boost Immunity and Avoid Antibiotics" by Michael A. Schmidt, Lendon H. Smith & Keith W. Sehnert.
In chapter 2, on page 35 it says the following;
"...elderly persons who take fish oils (EPA) for inflammatory or circulatory problems may be at risk to decreased immunity.  The solution is to take extra vitamin E"
This book was copyright 1993.  I asume back then the majority of people taking fish oils were the elderly.  Maybe I'm wrong our family never thought of taking fish oils until this year but my grandma has always taken them.
Have any of you heard of Fish Oils decreasing immunity?  Is there anything to that?  Everything else in the book seems really good but they give no explanation of this claim.
anyways, this is the first year that our family has taken fish oils and our immunity has stunk!  And I was thinking about how so many other healthy families have been hit hard this year and I know that many WTMers use CLO....?
Any thoughts on this?

I have read a couple of things by Drs. Schmidt and Smith that have been well researched and founded on good, healthy principles.    "Back then" was only 15 years ago.   Cheesy  That may seem like a long, long time to some.  However, I had already been taking CLO and eating healthy, organic foods for 15 years at that time and our oldest child was in the double digits.

Seems like there may be a reason for them recommending additional vitamin E other than age.  Probably a dietary lack or absorbsion problem.

Oh, I meant waaaaaaaaaay back then. Grin
Don't you think, though, that that sentence makes it sound like the fish oils are to blame for the decreased immunity?

Help/Advice! My dad has been diagnosed with the Flu B strain (I guess one of this year's flu strains??) today. I'm getting ready to re-read this thread more intentionally for advice to send him (the dr. prescribed Cypro and PamaFlu (?), but I'm going to see what else I can come up with for him). But here's the clincher...29 week pregnant me is supposed to fly in tomorrow for my last pre-baby visit home. I'm really torn as to what to do. I don't want the cost of the ticket to be a factor, but it would kill me to not use the plane ticket. Bad reason to expose myself to the flu, I know. And if I don't go this week, I won't be able to go before the baby due to scheduling, both on their end and ours.

Is there anything any of you did for any non-sick family members when others were sick that you think helped prevent infection? My sister had two roommates come down with the flu, and she took airborne and didn't get sick. Not the best, I know, but I'm definitely willing to try it. The other problem is, I'm coming off a recent cold...feel fine, just congested. But I know my immune system is not up to par because of that.

If anyone has advice or suggestions, please let me know! I'm taking garlic, and using Goot anyway to help with my congestion prior to the plane ride. I'm just taking a B supplement and cal/mag right now for vitamins, but eating a good amount of raw veggies/fruit. Maybe it's time to place a beeyoutiful order!  Roll Eyes

Thank you thank you thank you!!

Everybody in our house got the flu this winter except my husband.  These were his "strategies":

He took Emergen-C with, I think, 5 drops of GSE in it several times a day.

He tried to keep some distance betwen himself & us sickies... as much as possible with 5 of us in a smallish house!

He did not touch his face!

He washed his hands obsessively!

We all prayed lots that God would allow him to stay well.

It worked!  One evening he was feeling a little extra fatigued & had a mild sore throat so he went to bed & the next day he was fine.

Hope that helps.

I agree with the GSE.  I took 2-3 drops in a glass of juice twice daily (you could probably take it 3-4 times per day) for 3 days and that knocked it out.  That was all I did.

My oldest dd ate raw garlic a couple of times a day and she only got a mild "cold", which is surprising because she has asthma and things tend to settle in her chest.

My other 2 older children took probiotics and charcoal and never got it.

I assume you have the respitory flu, not stomach.

If that's the case, then my personal favorite is garlic, garlic, garlic!

Raw if you can handle it.

Plus apple cider vinegar.  Elderberry syrup.  Lots of fluids.  Lots of rest.  Some people swear by oregano oil.

Is fever a major issue?  I personally use Tylenol for high fevers when they get miserable, but there is some good info here about using ginger baths and egg whites.

You poor thing.  It's all over the place here, too.  We have colds, but thankfully have been spared the flu so far.

The concoction I used this week for our sore throats and colds was:  raw honey, raw garlic, raw apple cider vinegar and some cayenne pepper.  Mix it up and take by spoon, for whomever can handle it.  Leave out the cayenne for the weaker little people.

Here is some more info that may be of interest to any readers....

Vitamin D3 levels are important for protection against the flu...

http://homefirst.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=375:h1n1-vitamin-d&catid=1&Itemid=19

There is also some evidence that taking any antipyretic medication (medication used to lower fevers) can significantly contribute to the death rate associated with the flu.  These medications would include aspirin (Excedrin, Bufferin, Bayer), acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Midol, Motrin, Nuprin, Genpril, Ibu), and naproxen (Aleve).
