It's been almost 20 years since I did OB, but we used to routinely wrap mothers after delivery with an elastic "binder" that fastened with velcro... especially those following c-sections.  For vag deliveries I don't think we recommended using it too long... a week or so depending upon how many deliveries you had, but the sections were encouraged to use them longer.
The rationale was that while do want your organs/ligaments to get strong, but they need recovery following the stress of the birth.  The "binder" or wrap helped to support the organs.
Again, this is doesn't seem like it is done in hospitals anymore, but I do remember it at the few places I had to do OB...

I had it done in 2 hospitals The things dug into my ribs but helped me not have so much pain. At least in the scar area.

I am thinking the things that Shabby Chic posted from target would be more comfortable. I will be buying one of those before  the baby comes.

If you have a diastasis, this is really helpful for holding it closed.  I spent the day without my wrap today and I miss it.  But my wrap from ezywrap.com seems to be giving up, so I bought one of those pull up ones from the underwear section in walmart.  It would have been great, but I got a small (I'm a size 4/6 and 115 lb- but still got the "mummy tummy"), and it was too small- I could hardly pull it over my hips.  I guess I just got a little too ambitious!  Now I know and I'm going to try the next size or two up.  The boning in it wasnt too stiff, but stiffer than the ezywrap one which I liked- because the ezywrap bunched and rolled on me after wearing it for about a month.

Also check out www.maternalfitness.com- great site!  I just ordered the "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" DVD.  I'll let you know how I like it.  She takes a physical thearapy approach and teaches you about the anatomy of the abdominals, how to treat a diastasis at home (and cure it!), and other stuff.  She gives special excersizes.  There's a great testimonial on the site from mommys who have used her program.  She sells splints for diastasis, but it's not a full wrap for the whole belly.

Dear Hollyyolly123,

I read your post about your wrap you received from www.ezywrap.com and would like to offer a replacement or a refund. In addition, I wanted you to know that our HUG bariatric binders are ideal for postpartum support and abdominal support. It is the only binder that can be customized (cut with scissors to your body shape). It is also made with an anti-microbrial, breathable, and non-migrating material. It really is the best on the market, but it is expensive. If you would rather have the HUG as a replacement, I will be glad to send you one without charge, since your original binder didn't pan out for you. Here is the link (http://www.ezywrap.com/p-1006-12-inch-health-utility-garment.aspx. Give me your order number and I will look up your contact info and email you directly.

Best regards,

So here's my review on the post-partum belly wrapping. Totally love it! I cannot believe I ever recuperated from birth w/o doing it. On the first day, I used a binder that is actually made to be worn while PG, though I never did use it while PG. It is made of material similar to support stockings and is not as tight as the waist cincher from Target. I used the 1st binder for a day or two while my tummy was still pretty big. It was comfy enough to sleep in. After that I started using the binder from Target. It felt good, except that the "boning" in it kind of dug into my hips and/or ribs. I know it's probably just b/c I am very short-waisted. The tightness of it felt good, though. I alternated btwn. the two binders. I would go w/o one sometimes, but I didn't want to go w/o one for too long, b/c I have had a hernia during PG, as well as diastasis of the abdominal muscles. Anyway, IMO, it's a GREAT thing. I think it might have even helped a tiny bit w/the after pains - just having some support there.

She sells splints for diastasis, but it's not a full wrap for the whole belly.

hollyolly123, how do you like "Lose Your Mummy Tummy"? I have diastatis, so I'm wondering what you thought about this DVD.

Question for those of you who have purchased some sort of waist cincher/belly wrap...I need to get one to have on hand before baby arrives, but the ones I've found at our local stores vary drastically. Did any of yours have some sort of boning in them? If so, where? All the way around? Just at the back? Did any of you have just a tight waist cincher type band without boning?

Our Target carries nil in the way of belly wraps, but I did find a couple at some other stores, but I didn't want to buy the wrong thing so I thought I'd ask. The boning all the way around seems like it'd be really uncomfortable unless you're standing up all the time (the corset thing under my wedding dress was the same...miserable! good thing I was just standing in the receiving line the whole time!)...but the one without boning seems like it might not do much in the way of support.

Thoughts?

I got mine at easywrap.com.  It didn't have any boning in it, and after a while of continious wear it started to bunch up in back.  It did really help at the time. The one I got was $10 + shipping and I liked it. Could have gotten something at wm too.

@ 3 months PP, my biggest problem is that I need to stick to walking daily to lose the rest of the baby belly ,& not eat the junk that taste so good.  Sad HTH

I have tried the Target Hanes waist cincher mentioned in previous posts--think Shabby suggested it.  It has vertical "bones" that bother me a little when I sit.  I wear it for a few hours at a time and really "enjoy" it--boneless would feel better, as long as it still gave good support.  I bought my pre-PG size and it fits just right.

Polyethelene stays reinforce the latex free single panel elastic for terrific support. This breathable binder contours well and fits both male and female patients. All ezywrap binders are washable and close with our ezywrap® Velcro® closure.

The tummy wraps at EZYWRAP.com are a litle tricky to locate.

I was just told that it might be an idea to post here about Curves Trimming waist support.  It looks like it might be similar to what everyone is describing here.  I wish I would have had this info when I was recovering from my last delivery.  Here is the link, and the coupon code for free shipping is CLEARANCE       http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.aspx?pf_id=31030&from=search&find_spec=curves%20waist%20trimmer&camp=200902&dir_delivery=1&rep_delivery=1

Hope that link works.  The trimming waist support is supposed to help you lose weight in the waist and give support.  I use the thigh trimmers and really like them.  The price for the Curves Trimming waist support is $12.99 and free shipping through Jan 10.

I have a friend who was thrilled with her belly wrapping results. I can't review this product, but I did just see an advertisement for something called the "Belly Bandit". It looks expensive, but there are probably similar alternatives that are cheaper.

I think you gals are on the right track here.   Wish I had known this years ago when I had my children.   Sad    When I was nursing 35 years ago it was common to wrap after delivery.   They used a belly binder---------it was flat cloth and reinforced in the back with separated sections (maybe ties would be a better word) on either side.   We would take one section from each side and alternately wrap, crisscrossing from the bottom up. ( Patient was always lying down.)  The tie from one side would overlap and sort of tuck in the ones from the other side holding everything in place.  These reached from about the pubic bone to just under the breasts.    I think like everything else in the medical field---------as women took more interest in their pregnancies and doing things more natural this practice went by the way side.   To bad really because I think it was probably a good practice.   Just a little history.   Wink

I found this in an old book and thought it should be added to the discussion....

Quote
After the tenth day, the abdominal binder may be pinned as tightly as the patient desires, but prior to the tenth day many physicians believe the exceedingly tight binder causes misplacements of the enlarged, softened, and boggy uterus. It should be pinned snugly; but not drawn as tight as possible with the idea of keeping the uterus from relaxing, for at best, it does not do it; while tight constriction may produce a serious turning or flexion of the uterus.

THis is just an opinion, but I did bellywrapping until my ds (#3) was 7 months old (I was in really bad shape because I had to rest a lot during pregnancy).  Then, all of a sudden, my abdominal muscles felt really tired not long after putting my wrap on in the morning.  It was like my muscles were saying "ok, we don't need that help anymore."

I would really reccomend "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" by Julie Tuppler- and I'd reccomend the dvd over the book.  She takes a physical therapy approach to healing your diastasis (the cause of mummy tummy that doesn't heal from diet and regular excersize alone).  It works great great great and I have a flat tummy again!  I'm super strong now around my midde to, which helps my previously weak back.  PM me if you have any ?s

I had my baby girl on the 20th and I ordered a bellybandit www.bellybandit.com a couple days later.  I have been wearing it for just 4 or 5 days and I have lost 4" around my waist at the belly button.  I'm not sure if this is a normal or not because I've never really noticed it before but I can see a huge difference from a week ago.  I feel like I'm 3 months pregnant, instead of 6!  They have some on ebay that are a little less $ than the website (or they did).  I find it very comfortable, except it can feel a little hot.  I hate feeling restricted in my clothing so I thought I might not like it but I really enjoy the feeling of support.  I have been taking it off when I get on the treadmill because I didn't want to get all sweaty in it but today I decided to try it with it on and I did get too sweaty but the support felt much better.  They have some more expensive ones that are made out of bamboo, maybe they breathe better?  I don't know but I just wanted to share a positive testimony about this and thank you all for the idea.

Yeah, I'd reccomend doing the tuppler technique excersizes when your healed enough (a month or two maybe?), in addition to belly wrapping.  I think it makes the process go much more quickly, pulls together the diastasis (split down the middle), strengthens your back (and who doesn't hurt their back once or twice after having a baby?), and makes you feel so pretty.

I still really like mine.   There is a wide band of velcro on it and when I ordered it I was right between medium and large so I ordered the Medium.  The first time I tried it on (only about a week ago) I had to pull it tight to make it just fit.  I am now able to tighten it completely.  I am very pleased.  My husband doesn't know I'm using it but he made a comment this morning about how flat my stomach is beginning to look, and that was without it on.  My baby is only 2 weeks old yesterday.
The only complaint I have is that it kind of wrinkles and the wrinkles are hard to straighten out.  If I was wearing anything very fitted I think you would be able to see the wrinkles through it.  I suppose that would be one advantage to having one with boning in it.

Yeah, I don't think I could go that extreme.  I wasn't even sure I had the term right but it seems like some in this thread have used wraps with 'ribs' in them.  Does that make you more comfortable? Smiley

I have a thing (I'm notsure what you would call it...not a girdle, but not a bellywrap either) that has "ribs" in it that I was considering using post partum, but I don't know if I will after reading this thread.  I got it at Wal-Mart.  You step into it, and pull it up over your hips to your belly.  I wore it after abdominal surgery, and it did feel good to hold the scar, but the "ribs" poked me in my own ribs quite a bit.  I think something that would wrap around me, rather than me stepping into, would be better.  Mellie, Does the Bellywrap come down around your hips somewhat?  I want my surgery scar to be supported after the birth.  And do you know what your waist measurement was before birth?  I was wondering if I should order a medium.  If we are about the same, then I will know what to get.

I have a longish waist and I'm tall so I can either pull it to right under my breasts or down so it's over the top of my hips.  I feel more comfy with it over the top of my hips but then I have a little fat that pooches a bit over the top and I DON'T like that Tongue!  But I'm not wearing anything tight enough to show through anyways so I pull it down so that I feel like my uterus and ovary area area really supported.
I don't know what I measured before birth because I didn't consider it until about 3 or 4 days after.  At that point I was 44" and last time I measured I was down to 38".  That might not be helpful?  I don't know how you'd do an accurate measurement right after birth.  I always look still prenant for quite a while.
