Hi, is there any product you could recommend for a very persistant case of thrush in a two month old baby?

Actually the Tummy Tune-Up given in yogurt or whatever other food you are feeding the child will help take the place of the Thrush, however you might go to your health food store and buy an ounce each of Lavender and Tea Tree Oil.

Take about 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil in a small bowl or other container and add about 8 drops each of Lavender and Tea Tree Oil.

Mix thoroughly.

Using a Q-Tip, swab *a little* of the oil on the raw places in your childs mouth. Remember, this is not pure oil that you are swabbing... it is diluted oil. The Pure oil will burn the mouth. It must be diluted oil!

You might do this two times a day for about three days. You should see a difference in this time.

At the same time, the Tummy Tune-Up will greatly help take the place of the Thrush.

You can also treat your nipples with the same oil to keep them free of the yeast that causes the Thrush. You might also "paint" them with a little Tummy Tune-Up mixed with a little of your milk just before your baby nurses.

OK... so why does your baby have Thrush in the first place? Well probably you have a lot of yeast. I am working on an article about Yeast, and it will appear on Beeyoutiful and WellTellMe in about a month.

I've never been one to sterilize bottles or use filtered water for my babies.  I've just always been a believer in building the immune system; however when my middle girl got a bad recurring case of thrush, the doc recommended sterilizing all of the nipples and binkies.  Within a couple of weeks, the problem went away.

I posted the above earlier, and then later it occurred to me, you might not have a bottle baby.  Thrush, as you probably know, is another fungal/yeast infection.  If you are breast feeding and the baby continues to get thrush, she may be getting it from you (it's contagious).  Not to be alarmed, I gave my son a diaper yeast infection just from skin contact.  I posted a lot of information on this type of thing on another thread http://welltellme.com/discuss/index.php?PHPSESSID=1305e42e0be5bda2c387f4ba0b0341cf&topic=39.0 if you're interested.  If you are in fact passing it to the baby, there are a lot of healthy ways to heal your skin for your sake and baby's too.

Here's a site that can offer some more helpful facts on yeast and it's problems.  http://www.yeastconnection.com/  I read the book from this site.  Very informative.  Roll Eyes

hi my second boy had thrush and i had a yeast infection with both my pregnancies and in turn both boys had it as well.  with my 2nd i had to use genshun violet for his mouth and my nipples.  i have since found out that i had candida which was causing this so i went to our our doc (natural med) and he rid it for us all <allertouch.com>.  i tried the olive oil and garlic but i did not try the tea tree oil, and genshun was what worked for me.  got it at walgreens.

My son had thrush and I tried prescriptions for weeks... like almost 4 weeks I think and it didnt do a darn thing.. then I tried gentian violet and in a day and a half it was gone... I would try to avoid all yeast and sugar in your diet as well... He's maybe a little young to eat yogurt but if you do try that make sure it is plain, non sugar kind.. There's my 2 cents. Smiley

I did the gentian violet too but it only took it away for a short time, I then started using a strong bay leaf tea on his bottom and mouth and on my breasts. fixed the problem immediatly, Smiley

Can someone describe what thrush looks like?  My 2 1/2 mos son has bits of white on his tongue and on the insidea of his lips.  No diaper rash, though.  This doesn't disappear between feedings. It isn't "bad" but it isn't going away.  The whitish area is growing slightly (over 2 wk. period)

thanks.

It looks like a white coating on the tongue, throat and insides of the mouth.  It can be patchy or it can cover completely. CHECK THese IMAGEs.

If you're nursing and he has thrush, he probably got it from you.  You might want to cut down on your sugars slowly and take some Tummy Tuneup or other probiotics (yogurt, kefir, etc) to try and kill the yeast in your body and try one of the various topical treatments recommended by the other moms.  At least one person has recommended sprinkling the contents of Tummy Tuneup on the nipples and some other herbal treatments are mentioned earlier in the thread.  Once you stop nursing, you may want to try Yeast Assassin or some other internal yeast killer to make sure you've kicked it completely.  Check the thread on Candida for more info.

I never had any symptoms vaginally or on my breasts during the long time my son had thrush.. He never had it badly.. only small patches on the insides of his cheeks... He was never around other kids either, so I don't know how he got it... But I'm sure that's what it was... Anyway.. that gentian violet took care of the problem in less than 2 days after about 3 frusterating weeks of nystatin and no results.. Tongue

I definitely second the Gentian Violet!  It's cheap and effective--costs maybe $3 at any pharmacy.  With my first child, I treated her for thrush for four weeks with Nystatin.  It still didn't go away.  I was about to start a third round of Nystatin, when I mentioned it to my midwife.  She suggested the Gentian Violet.  All you do is put a little on your nipples before a feeding, and nurse as normal.  Do this twice a day for up to three days.  You're both treated, and it works very well!  Be careful, though because it will stain clothing.  It will also leave a bright purple color on your skin and baby's mouth, but that goes away.  HTH!

None of my kids ever had thrush until this last one.  I got it too it was SO painful.  I needed my precocet for when I nursed not for my incision. ha. I never did that actually.  My midwife suggested boric acid.  One teaspoon in 4 oz of distilled water.  I had been putting cocnut oil on us before that but it wasn't working. I don't know why, I thought that would have worked.  BUT I did have to rounds of antibitics one when we thought I was going to have her at home and then another on during the "section" so we didn't have a lot of good going on at the time.  Fortunately I take probiotics pretty much all the time so hopefully that helped.

I think my little guy might have thrush.  My breasts are very itchy, I'm past all the soreness and felt great for a few days.  Also, I noticed on the roof of his mouth he has about 4 or 5 little white dots, (kinda look like tiny pimples).  That's it for symptoms.  Should I look for anything else to verify that he/we have it?  Is is safe to do the Gentian Violet even if he doesn't have it?

My babies never have had thrush, but what you are describing rings a little bell in my memory.  Way back when I used to take my babies to the well baby check up, I remember the doc always pointing out the dot on the top of his mouth.  The only thing is that I don't remember if it was dot or dots.  One dot at least is norm and it might be dots, but I don't know!!!!
Ask someone else who has a newborn how many dots their baby has on the top of his mouth. Smiley

The only time "we" had thrush was this time and it sounds exactly what you are describing.  I am not sure who had it first but my breasts were very itchy. What is weird is the ped. didn't say she had it at two weeks but a few days after that visit it started to "grow" more and I got SO itchy and then it got VERY painful. I wanted to pass out every time she latched on and it seemed to take forever to get well once it got to that point. (for me, I don't think she suffered at all  Smiley) I first tried coconut oil in her mouth but I guess that wasn't strong enough for what we had.  We never did do violet though. My midwife recommended diluted boric acid on both of us after every time she nursed

Julie G,

Definitely sounds like thrush.  Especially since you are itchy.  You want to treat it fairly early, because if you have it for a while it can get into your milk ducts and cause a lot (A LOT) of pain.  I can't think of a reason why the Gentian Violet wouldn't be okay, but you could always ask a midwife if you know or see one.  They usually have a lot of knowledge about this kind of thing.

Thank you everyone!  I got the Gentian Violet yesterday, figured better safe than sorry so I started it right away...it started getting painful to nurse very quickly.  Poor little guy looks like he's got 5 o' clock shadow with all the purple on his face Cheesy.  Am I applying too much?  I've just been putting it on my breasts, should I also put it in his mouth?  Already I feel much much better....how long should I do this for?  It sure is messy stuff!

In my experience, you only need a couple of drops on each nipple, then breastfeed as usual.  You do it twice a day for three days.  It worked like a charm for me.  It can be irritating to the skin, so if it doesn't work in three days, you're supposed to try something different.

When I used it, I thought it looked like my 6-week-old baby had been eating grape popsicles!!  Cute!  I'm glad you're feeling better.  Grin

Thanks, everyone!

I never did get itchy nipples, and Phinehas hasn't had a diaper rash, but...
I did start puting a mixture of Olive Oil (2T) and Tea Tree Oil (3-4 drops) and Lavender Oil (3-4 drops) on his mouth2-3 times a day (except when I've forgotten Sad) and the white stuff on his lips and tongue is clearing right up!  He actually seemed to like the tasts of the oil  Smiley

Thanks again!

My baby boy is 9 weeks old and I breast feed. For the past week or so, my breast have been extremely sensitive. Especially when he's latching on. They also burn alot between feedings.
He doesn't have any symptoms.A light white coating on his tongue, but none on his lips or cheeks. I don't know if the coating on his tongue is normal or not.
Does this sound like thrush or just some other nursing problem?

Sounds like it to me....you can always treat for thrush and if the pain subsides you'll know that's what it was.

When I used Genitian Violet it took a few hours and much of the burning was gone.  My little guy only had like 3 or 4 little pimples on the roof of his mouth...my biggest symptom was the pain and burning during nursing.  HTH

I just noticed that my 5 mo. old's mouth is covered w/  thrush.   Now what am I suppossed to do?  What can I give  him to rid him of the obvious yeast?    What can I do to keep my breasts from getting sore while he has this?  Futhermore,  what can I   as a nursing Mom take to rid myself of the yeast? Advice would most surely be appreciated....  the sooner the better!

HB is much better at this than I am... Cheesy

Here is one of a couple of threads addressing thrush on this forum.  Go to the "search" option on the righthand side and type in the search word "thrush" and it will pull up all the threads.

Hmmmm,  should've found this topic before I wrote my previous post.   I still have a few questions though.....   how much tummy tuneup can I/should I give him?  Is there something like an overdose of tummy tuneup?  Also I ordered the Yeast X from Mountain Meadow Herbs for myself.  Is it all right to do this while nursing?

I noticed mentions of coconut oil, what does that do?  Also, how much of the boric acid would I use?  I don't really want to use the GV.  I don't have any Tummy Tuneup, but I will see if I can get some probiotics.

Thanks!!

I didn't get an answer on my previous question but I have been using olive oil and TTO mixed together (didn't have any lavendar oil to add) and just swabbing that on her lip and tongue several times a day and it is better.  The thrush is completely gone off her lower lip and her tongue looks much better, AND it isn't purple!!

I did buy some GV to have on hand incase it did get worse and I am taking probiotics.
