When one of my babies had it while nursing, we went through the nystatin which he promptly vomited back up on me, then GV which I hated the purple mouth, I don't know maybe I used too much.  I had gone through my OB for both of those I was fighting it too, but then I was talking to our pediatrician and he said to just clean his mouth with hydrogen peroxide after feedings with a Q-tip.  Within a week, it cleared up.

I'm glad I found this thread...but a search wouldn't pull it up Huh
My 8mo has white all over his lips and tongue, but I have no symptoms (yet).  I'm going to try olive oil with tummy tuneup, since that is what's in my house.  How much is safe?  I have the kind with a little #6 in the title.

I tried it and it worked fine.  My guess is that you were not on the "HOME" page.  If you navigate away from home when using the simple search, you've limited your search to whatever board you are currently in.   Grin

This might be a stupid question but......my mother has had thrush for quite some time, now.  Can my children get it from giving her kisses?  Is yeast that transferable?

If they are healthy they might not, probably won't, but it is contagious. (Look at post#2 on this thread)

Gentian Violet is basically a violet tincture & you can get it at a pharmacy. If your reg. pharmacy doesn't have it, try a compounding pharmacy-just look in the phone book.

Gentian Violet is a purple dye that is used to treat vaginal yeast infections and thrush. The dye is "painted" on the infection and kills the fungus. It can stain clothing.

I was only able to find it for purchase on Ebay.  I never buy the stuff, so maybe someone else can help you in that area.

Is it ok to use more than one tummy tune-up in a day?  Is grapefruit seed crush (diluted) ok to mix in the concoction, or should I apply it seperately (suspended in water? oil?)  Thanks for your input.  Or maybe the hydrogen peroxide.  I eat tons of garlic, so I'm discouraged that he has an infection at all.  At least I'm still symptom-free.

I did the gentian violet too but it only took it away for a short time, I then started using a strong bay leaf tea on his bottom and mouth and on my breasts. fixed the problem immediatly, Smiley

How did you fix the bay leaf tea and how did you apply it.  My son (almost 10 mths old) has had thrush off and on since he was 5 1/2 mths old.  I have noticed that he gets it each time he is teething.  Also use the GV, but while he's teething, it doesn't matter.  He has been teething(and breaking through the gums) for 1 mth now and he has had thrush in his mouth off and on the whole month.

Could I ask how many of you that have thrushy babies, were on anitbiotics during labor and delievery?

My hubby and I are doin g some indepth research on this to present tomy O.B. and he didn't believe me when I suggested there was a link.  He has since found some research by two doctors that says there is a direct connection.  I'm VERY curious!

I was given very strong antibiotics the day before my c-section and not only did she struggle with thrush, but she came home from the hospital with a vaginal yeast infection! She battled yeast infections 'til she was about two years old and don't think it ever really went away, it just moved to her digestive tract.

I would LOVE to hear all about your research when you're done. As for me, you know my story (I had them).  You're brave to try to present this stuff to your OB. I had midwives who still didn't want to listen to my findings.

I had to decide recently whether or not to use that "purple stuff" on my girl's rashes around her mouth and thought I'd better research it.

"Gentian Violet" sounded innocent enough (like a flower or something), but it seems to be a chemical dye that happens to be antiseptic (but I'm not sure):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentian_violet

Decided to try natural antiseptics like black walnut hull & GOOT. I then went back to exclusively breastfeeding and it went away.

Smearing Kefir all over her face at dinnertime helped some. (Decided not to try the purple stuff).

OH, and I also started brushing her gums gently with my finger before bed to keep her mouth cleaner & the conditions in there less friendly to microorganisms.

I have had the most negative response form my OB about this!  She will never listen to any of this, but here's my plan.  I'm due any day, I'm praying that I will go into labor before my next appointment on Wed.  I just want to be able to show her and anyone else that asks, that hubby and I have done LOADS of research, interviewed everyone we could think of  that has had antibiotics for GBS during labor and pooled all our info in a folder to take to the hospital.  It's MY body, MY baby, andMY decision. Hubby and I have prayed contiuously about it, we have tried to be open to what the statitstics say etc..., but just have this "gut feelin'" that we don't need to accept these.   It's amazing the moms I've talked too, when asked " did you have antibiotics while in labor and if so, did you baby have thrush afterwards?" and they reply " Wow, yeah, I guess I never really put it together abou the antibiotics and the yeast?"

I usually don't go into all the other stuff we've discovered about antibiotics during labor and delivery, because I know they either won't listen or they will put a huge guilt trip on themselves perhaps.

It's amazing what the docs DON'T tell you.

Anyone else have a thrushy baby after the IV antibiotics?  Pleas post here! or start another thread.

thanks

I hate to crush the antibiotic/thrush link (because IMO I'm sure there is one), but I had a homebirth with no antibiotics and my son has thrush.  I never took any antibiotics during pregnancy and opted out of being tested for GBS so at the recommendation of my midwife, I took vit C, garlic and probiotics as a preventative in case I did have it.
This is my fourth and the only baby that has had thrush and hope that the probiotics and stuff I took didn't aid in this.  Isn't yeast due to the imbalance of good/bad bacteria?  Could it have happened because I killed off too much bad bacteria??
Also, does anyone know if thrush is painful for the baby?  My son is such a good baby with no colic problems or anything and he's a great burper but every now and then (usually not long after I apply the GV) he just starts screaming out of the blue, then settles down again like something was hurting him.  I was just wondering if the thrush itself or the yeast kill off was painful.

Hmm.  I've looked it up on Wikipedia, but I'm still not sure what the Gentian Violet stuff is. It is a dye, but is it natural? I have some, but I haven't used it yet.

Hi!  Thought I might throw in a few comments about thrush.  I've battled it with my 3rd daughter while we nursing.  Firstly, the suspected pain could be from the gentian violet itself.  If the strength is too strong, it can cause a burn, so use it with caution.  When I had thrush, I had mistakenly used the Rx I was prescribed, but I would use it for a few days, her mouth would clear up, my pain would dissapate, I'd finish the two weeks, then a few days later it would be right back.  I tried three rounds when I finally realized that the main ingredient in the Rx was sugar...exactly the food that yeast feeds on.  Shocked I eliminated all sugar in any form from my diet and within a month it was gone for good.  No processed foods, sweets, milk (lactose), breads with yeast, or even fruit.  I also increased my probiotics and made sure I cleaned counters and bathrooms well, also.  Use paper towels in the bathroom for a while, as yeast can travel through a house and take on different symptoms in different people. So...my suggestion would be to look at your diet (and baby if he's eating solids yet).  Hey, I lost about 10 pounds that month!  A great bonus! Cheesy
With Blessings,
Lisa

My adopted daughter, 7 weeks old, has been receiving breastmilk from another woman through a bottle.  I noticed my daughter's tongue was white, but didn't see any other symptom so I had dismissed it, but I'm pretty sure it is thrush since it is still here.
It seems, from this post that Gentian Violet is the way to go.  Should I just put a little on her tongue, twice a day for three days?  And, sterilize bottles?
Also, all the breastmilk I have is in the freezer and should last us another 2 months.  I can't imagine throwing it out, but there is obviously nothing i can do about the milk already being contaminated by yeast.  So, is it okay to continue giving the milk even if it may continue to give her thrush??
Thanks!!

You might want to make sure it is thrush.  My DD (7 months now) has thin white stuff on her tongue all the time. My other DD always had a small white spot on the inside of her cheek. The one time I;m sure she had thrush, she was getting thick white stuff on her tongue, white patches on her cheeks and bottom lip.  I did treat with Gentian Violet (bought it at Wal-mart)
I thought this was the thrush coming  back but it didn't go away with the GV, I took her for a baby visit last week and she didn't think she had thrush.  So just an FYI, if you don't have any other symptoms you might want to google what thrush looks like or ask your pediatrican next time you go.

thanks so much!  i'm not sure if it is thrush either, now.  But, i started the GV and it looks much better, so does that mean it was thrush??  Regardless, GV has been an easy remedy and most of the work has come from sterilizing everything and keeping the GV from staining everything!
Thanks!

Hello everyone - this is my first time posting.  I'm hoping to get some help!
I am nursing a 4 week old baby and think we may have a yeast infection/thrush.  Her tongue stays coated pretty white, she has a very red diaper rash, and has begun nursing differently this week - pulling off and fussing some, making that clicking sound.... I have shooting pains in both breasts, but no visible symptoms.  Neither one of us are severe, but I don't want to get there!  This is my fourth baby; I've never had a yeast infection of any kind.
A little more background - I started taking the Supermom vitamins two weeks ago, building up to the recommended dosage . The past several days I'd been taking just one a day.  I think I may have started experiencing some detox... I had a fever one night and hurt all over, now I have a sore throat and am very hoarse.  I've never taken any probiotics except a few Tummy Tune Ups here or there preventitively.  I completed the Master Cleanse last year just prior to getting pregnant with this baby.  Thought some of that info may help.
Again, my main concern is not letting this possible thrush get out of hand.
Any thoughts or recommendations??
Thanks so much!

Bless your heart, that has to be rough.  Okay, have you had any antibiotics at all recently?  I was prescribed some when nursing, but didn't take them because they can cause thrush (or so I was told).  I'm on Supermom right now (pregnant with 2nd baby).  I don't have any useful info for you, but will pray for you.  Good for you, by the way in catching this thing before it gets any worse.

hi there!  well, what i am thinking is the yeast inf. could be possible yeast die off/detox.  i had one as a detox symptom which i treated with warm garlic water.  you might be able to find treatments for thrush on here, just use the search on the first page.  i think it might be genetian violet that is recommended, but not sure.  hope you find some relief.

Wow!  I was always told not to detox when nursing or pregnant due to the toxins spreading to the baby.

Sounds like you need to get the thrush under control.  I would make sure to take a minimum 3-4 T. of coconut oil orally put it on my breasts/nipple/nursing area topically.  For Baby, I'd also spread a mixture of coconut oil and cornstarch (to the the consistency of cinnamon roll frosting) on their bottom as well as feed it (pure virgin coconut oil) to baby, making sure I spread it on his/her tongue.  I learned the coconut oil / cornstarch idea from Vange from Above Rubies.

Serene from Above Rubies writes about the powerful properties of coconut oil here:
http://rubies.articledirectoree.com/articles/health/nothing-but-the-best-2.html

My friends have tried the g.violet and it's very messy.  Stains clothes.  The coconut oil seemed easier and we always have it on hand.

Help, her thrush is back AGAIN!!  We've been throught the topical Nystatin and the oral Nystatin.  Neither cleared it up completely.  Then I ran across this site and tried Beka's tea tree/lavendar oil mix (but only half strength).  Finally, I used the Gentian Violet for 3 days.  The GV seemed to clear it up finally, but now only 2 weeks later, it's back again.  My baby is only three months old and I had a Diflucan (one-time pill for yeast infection) a few days before her birth.  Does it sound like I could be the problem?  I have had no signs of yeast in my own body since then, and I have not had any refined sugar since her birth, but I'm wondering if I might be at the point where it is necessary for me to go on the Candida diet.  I haven't researched it to any great extent.  I also plan to try the tea tree/lavendar oil one more time at full strength.  Any opinions or starting links?

I have heard someone mention on here before that they had success with a product called Threelac. The mom took it and she gave 1/4 packet to the baby. I think her baby was about your baby's age. It is very expensive, but it is safe to use during pregancy and nursing, and the people who have tried it say it works. And it says it's not necesary to go on a strict candida diet while using it, although it is good to stay away from refined sugars. You might try that first before going on the diet. For some reason, when I went on the diet and was nursing, it decreased my milk supply. This may not happen with you, that was just my experience. HTH

I need to come up with an overall plan to rid my baby of thrush.  I asked my husband about Threelac, but he would rather I try a less expensive route for now.  Although I don't have yeast symptoms myself, my little one has had recurring thrush for her first three months, so here is my plan:

For me:
A yeast-free, dairy-free, fruit-free, and sugar-free diet (for four weeks) along with Tummy Tune-Up and garlic tablets.  Do I need Yeast Assassin too?

For my baby, I would like to try the tea tree/lavendar oil combo full strength for awhile.  I do have Nystatin if it doesn't work.  Should I go with the oral and topical together for awhile?  Or can I put Tummy Tune-Up on her tongue?

I've been skimming a lot of material, but have a lot to learn yet.  Could someone with Candida know-how advise me on this?

Thanks so much!

My 2 1/2 week old has a yeast infection in his diaper area.  I had to take antibiotics during the last three weeks of my pregnancy.  Can I sprinkle TTU directly on the rash, or would that help?  I'm already giving TTU to him directly, taking it myself, and cutting out sugar.  TIA for your help.
