Hey Girls~

To answer your question, I've never been on the pill, My husband and I pretty much use condoms or withdrawl.
And We've never used anything else.
I don't know what the deal is......I'm still spotting today, buts it's not really spotting its more like bleeding, and I am really tender down in my uterus and ovary.
I heard someone say that red raspberry tea is a natural form of estrogen, Is this true?
Maybe my estrogen levels are really high, and that is whats causing the bleeding.
But can't you have too much estrogen? I thought too much estrogen can cause cancer and stuff....I could be completely wrong, but I don't know Undecided
Raspberry tea is not a phytoestrogen that I'm aware of.  It contains many B vitamins that help your body to naturally restore it's own hormonal balances.

I've read that spotting during ovulation can be a good sign of fertility.  I researched it awhile ago, because I was having mid-month spotting around the time of ovulation for about 5 months and I wondered what was going on.  For me, it turned out that I had a uterine polyp that was causing the bleeding.  I don't know whether ovulation affected the timing of the bleeding or not, but it did seem rather predictable.  I had the polyp removed, and voila - no more mid-month bleeding!  My ob/gyn said that mid-month bleeding is usually caused by either a structural problem (fibroids, polyps), or wacky hormones.  I'd suggest asking a dr about your symptoms.  I know it is frustrating feeling like something just isn't right in there, but unsure about what is causing it.

I"ve had this too.  No structurall issues for me, but I did see my midwife and doctor.  They helped me as my hormones were outa wack.  I would think RRL tea would be helping get things into order, but sometimes you see symptoms in the process.  Maybe that is what you are noticing??  Just an uneducated guess Smiley  Mine took a few months to improve, and then has not been an issue in a long time.

Ugh. I am on CD 15 and STILL going! Normally, my cycles are 3-5 days long. Not excessively heavy either, usually mild cramping. This cycle started on day 26 (which is one day early) and (*WARNING**TMI**GROSS*) it was light and slimy-like mixed with cervical fluid. This went on for 3 days and then I finally started (normal bleeding) on around day 7 or 9 I started clotting fifty-cent size clots and then it went to quarter size clots. On day 12, I thought AF was over...only to find that night that I was spotting. Here it is day 15 and it is still here...now the bleeding has picked up again (not heavy) and I now am cramping...still clotting some (about the size of peas) and am just plain 'ole tired!!! I find that I want to nap in the afternoon and when I do I find that I 'sleep' hard. I am also very weepy!
I called the Dr this morning, but am told that they can't see me until Fri and what I am experiencing is very common and they will examine me, probably do some blood work and put me on birth control...I told her that I wasn't going to take birthcontrol and she (the nurse) told me that she didn't know what they would do then...Friday seems so far away...and I feel SO bad. I am 40 years old and NOT ready for menopause...we desperately would like to have more children. I have NEVER experienced anything like this before. My periods are always like clock work and I never have any problems with them...until now.
I have also lost 21 lbs...but that has been an on going process since the beginning of Janurary...the weight loss is only about a lb a week and at the most 2 lb a week...it hasn't affected me in all this time....I am dumbfounded at what can be wrong.

Interesting to find your post as I have been dealing with unusually heavy and frequent menstruation recently. HB is right to suggest uterine fibroids as they can cause excessively heavy and long lasting periods. One thing about fibroids, though, is that they generally take time to grow and begin causing symptoms more gradually. Is this something that just started suddenly or has it been going on for a while. I'm wondering about a couple of other things. Have you recently given birth and is your body trying to get back in gear? Also, what about stress since that can make the hormone cycles whacky.
A couple of thoughts regarding home remedy if you haven't already tried them are Cayenne and Yarrow.  They are both very good for menorrhagia (excessive menstruation).  Fritchey in "Practical Herbalism" notes that Yarrow is considered to be one of the best herbs for this and that both compliment each other quite well.

My only birth-child will be 4 in June...so, no recent deliveries. Haven't had any testing for fibroids....never really needed it before. Never had any problems until now. Had thyroid tested not too long ago and all came up normal (1.5 ? I  think). No stress really, except for daily stuff like homeschooling, housework, laundry and cooking-but, I love all those things. Guess I will just have to wait until Fri to find out what Dr says...
Although, something just occured to me...I have been taking something called 'Fruitful vine' from Mountainmeadowherbs....of course, I have been taking that for awhile, so I haven't had any problems with that either.
Hmmmmm...frustrating.

Hello!  I am new here. This is exciting.
OK- I went through the fibroid thing- severe bleeding out every month.  Iron level a 7, a blood transfusion (much prayer!), an embolization  (because I refused a hysterectomy at 28) and drank infusions.  I cannot remember what all was in them- at the time I thought I would never forget.  I drank shepard's purse, some kind of thistle and something else in a big glass of  water.  It worked almost immediately to stop heavy bleeding.  No really it stopped it.
But now here I am 5 years later and I am so tired this month.  I have been bleeding every two weeks (this month).  From reading the posts it sounds like the 'broids are back. Oh! Please pray for me.

I hope the fragmented tincture info helps someone out there.  I got the recipe from the ladies at the health food store.  I walked in and said hysterectomy, and they said OH NO! and gave me the tinctures. Those ladies truly saved my life.  Thank God for them!

Mid cycle spotting is a sign of ovulation. Estrogen builds up as you approach ovulation. Estrogen is also responsible for building up the blood lining of the uterus that will nourish a growing baby (if the released egg is fertilized  Wink.) Once you ovulate, estrogen levels drop and progesterone takes over. They almost overlap each other. But if progesterone levels take a little too long to build up, neither estrogen nor progesterone are present to sustain the blood lining of the uterus, so it starts slipping or leaking out. It's OK for this to happen. It's actually a great way to pinpoint ovulation. I would recommend a thorough reading of Taking Charge of Your Fertility, as was mentioned earlier in this thread. It's a great study! Smiley

I also have mid-month ovulation bleeding.  I normally only bleed lightly for like two days. But, for the last 3 months or so I have been bleeding in the middle of my cycle off and on.  Sometimes the blood is bright red, pink, or a brown color.  I think I may have a polyp(sp) or cyst on my ovary possibly.  I have been having tenderness on my left ovary even when it's not ovulation time.  My Dr. found a quarter sized polyp on the opening of my cervix during my second pregnancy.  I guess too much estrogen can cause cysts or polyps?  I was already thinking that my thyroid was underactive, maybe this is what's causing my irregular bleeding.  I have also noticed that my cycles are getting much shorter each month.  One month I will go 25 days between one period and the next will be like 22 days.  I used to be like right on time every month.  I would never be late or early, of course, unless I was pregnant.  I guess I need to make an appt to get this checked out.  Do they just do an ultrasound to find cysts on your ovary?  Just wondering how they check.  I have never had any problems with ovary pain before.

I believe a symptom of Estrogen dominance is long and "continual" menstruation. Basically a hormonal imbalance. I would suggest staying away from foods high in Estrogen, and increasing your intake of Progesterone to see if this makes a difference.

_Rebekah

I was just told that I have uterine polyps and last year I had fibroid surgery.  I am planning on having the procedure to remove the polyps but I was told if you ever had them you could get them again.  I am looking for possible links to prevent them for the future.  In my study I have read that it is more likely to get them in the childbearing years so I was thinking that it is related to hormones.  I am 36 years old and we want more children.  Maybe too much estrogen.  Maybe soy linked.  Any ideas or books to study?     -Connie

Have you charted yourself at all (cervical fluid and temp?) Doing this will help, not only you, but your doctor when you go for an apt. It's a lot of great info that can help you and your doctor narrow down the problem. For instance, knowing when you ovulate can tell you if your post-ovulation phase (the time after you ovulate) is what has shortened. If it has, that's very important info to know (and may easily be remedied), especially if you want to get pregnant w/o an early miscarriage.

I have heard that a shorter cycle is a sign of a healthier body.  That it's actually better if it's shorter.  Maybe your body is transitioning because you're healthier.  Just a thought.

question, for the longest time during midperiod, this thing happens, maybe it's normal, i have always thought it was......like day 3 or 4 my period stops, for almost 24hours, then comes back for a few days, not necessarily lighter. Is this nromal? i will admit that i am probably far from healthy!!LOL! like 35lbs overweight, not sick oftten, low blood pressure, no exercise, but have been drinking lots of water (water cure standards minus the salt)............... but this has been happening for YEARS!! so, am i to assume this is normal?

I think that this is the right place for this, but I have a question for you all.  My periods have always been every 27-28 days (usually following the lunar cycle) and have lasted for 3-4 days.  I have not been on hormonal birth control in about 15years (and only for a few months then) and my last child was born 5 years ago and he was nursed until he was 18 months.
I had a slightly lighter than normal period 30 days ago ( think of this as day 1)  at day 14 I started bleeding horribly.  There was a chance that I could have been pregnant though we are not actively trying.  This period lasted for 7 days and was incredibly heavy.  I was also an emotional basket case which is not quite my norm either.  I don't tend to get weepy and tearful, but I had several meltdowns during this period.
Well, I was thinking that things were just re-adjusting themselves when yesterday evening...wham!! on day 30 I start another period.  THis one really caught me by surprise!  It does seem to be more like my normal ones and I am not on the verge of hysteria as I had been with the long one that was so bad.
I don't track basal temps, but have usually been able to feel egg release physically, and I only ovulate every other month or so now.
The only additional variable is wild yam.  I brewed some in a tincture with some other things (per Dr Schultes women's formula) and made some salve of wild yam.  I didn't start to use them until I knew I wasn't pregnant on day 15, and I have only been using very small amount of just one, not both.   I thought that it might help to regulate things a bit.  Is this something ya'll have seen with wild yam.
I haven't been to a gyn in quite a while and am due to go so I will probably call for an appointment.   I did have a blood profile done at work and my hemoglobin is where it always is at 14.
I guess I am wondering is this a side effect of the wild yam or of just getting older?  Was the heavier period a miscarriage, and would I then start another period so soon after it stopped?

I can't answer the question about a possible miscarriage but I can give you some insight into wild yam.  If wild yam is not dosed correctly it can and will cause intermediate bleeding.  It will also cause wild hormone swings which will create serious emotional changes.  I am not a fan of non-specific dosing wild yam for this reason.  It is better to use a bio-identical wild yam cream that is dosed specifically for what your body is missing so you don't get too much or too little progesterone.  The "normal" dosing for wild yam cream is twice daily on days 15-28 (or 29 or 30 - whatever your normal cycle length is).  If you use wild yam any other time it will cause bleeding and can cause excessive bleeding.  If you use too little or not enough the same thing can happen.  I would recommend you stop using any wild yam for a month or so and let your body straigten out (if it will) and then try again on days 15-28 using it twice daily (AM and PM).   It sounds like you're using it on the right days but that the dosing might be off.  If you've had your progesterone checked via saliva test you might be able to try fooling with the dose to get you in the normal range but I think it might be really hard to do that without a ton of experimenting which means your body is going to go up and down during the whole experimenting process.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share my story.  I originally posted on here in October 2006.  I'm 21 years old and I've never had a normal period and have often had very heavy bleeding.  In April 2007, I started bleeding very heavily and it would not stop.  I had to be taken to the ER and my hemoglobin level was 4.7.  I had to have a transfusion of two units of blood.  After that, I was taking about 12 herbs a day and using progesterone cream.  It seemed to help for a while but I still never had a "regular" cycle.  In February of this year, the same thing happened and the bleeding wouldn't stop.  So, there I was back in the ER.  Now my doctor has me on the pill and I pray it will help get me straightened out.  It was pretty scary going through all that but God is faithful.

Hello ladies!
I will admit. I'm not a patient person.  I read most of the first page of this thread and thought, I should just ask!  So here goes:
I am 28, have 2 kids, have had pretty regular periods all my life with the exception of once or twice having 2 cycles in a month - during VERY stressful times in my life.  My baby is 19 months old and I just quit nursing 6 months ago.  I was not nursing exclusively that long, and my period came back well over a year ago and has been normal....till now.
On July 21, I started my period - on time.  However, it did not STOP till around Aug 2.  Just kept spotting.  Then, I went in for my normal annual on Aug 7 at the OB/GYN and hello!  started bleeding AGAIN.  Doc said I had had an antiovulatory cycle - didn't ovulate and my body was essentially flippin out.  She put me on provera - a progesterone supplement.  I took it for 7 days, including yesterday.  And let me tell you...no only did it NOT stop the bleeding, but now I am an emotional wreck - think pregnancy meets post partum depression kinda emotions!  Shocked  I feel crazy to be quite honest!  I talked to the nurse today, twice.  This was the conclusion:  stop the provera, let's put you on birth control for 3 months.  I asked about the bleeding - her reply, "Oh, if it doesn't stop soon, call us back."  What do I need to do for them to DO something besides shove hormones down my throat??  I'm quite frustrated with the doctor and especially her nurse.  Undecided  Does anyone here have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?  What I should be looking for?  What I should ask for them to do?  I'm seriously considering changing doctors, even though I really LOVE this doctor.  But something's gotta give....I can't just keep bleeding the rest of my life.  On a side note, she did a pap and pregnancy test.  Normal pap, not pregnant.  If anyone has ANY suggestions, please let me know!!!  TIA!

Try reading the book by Dr. John Lee called "What your doctor may not tell you about premenopause.  Balance your hormones and your life from ages thirty to fifty".

You aren't 30 yet, but it sounds just like a friend of mine going through the same thing.  This book has been eye opening to her and helpful to me as well.  I'd check your library for it first, as they may have it.

As strange as it seems low iron can cause irregular, prolonged menstruation and strange bleeding. A tough domino effect because the bleeding further lowers iron levels. This is something I am currently dealing with.

I am dealing with the spotting also and this past period it continue for about two weeks.  I had that problem before I got pregnant with my 1 year old and it seems to be coming back. I didn't know low iron had anything to do with it, so I may try something for that.  I just started back using progesterone cream, so hopefully that will help also.

Ladies,

I have had great results with hormonal imbalances by supplementing with Plus by Mannatech.  Plus gives support to your endocrine system (which controls everything within the body - weight, temperature, hormones, etc.).  Plus is NOT a hormone, but it gives your body what it needs to create its own hormones naturally.  It's also a modulator for all 80 hormones!  New research states that the heart and stomach are both responsible for creating a hormone!  Wow!

Start supporting the system, not the symptoms, and you will address the cause of the discomfort.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Created4Jeff,

There are many many posts throughout the forum relating to hormone imbalance.  I suggest you read through them and this thread and attempt to deduce the cause of your hormone imbalance so that you know how to proceed.

Estrogen Dominance & Other Hormone Imbances: Causes & Cures
Soy Bad, Soy Good: The Pluses of Fermented Soy
Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS)
Progesterone Cream: How, Why & When to Use
Wild Yam Root and hormones?
Homemade wild Yam Cream
What kind of progesterone supplement should I take?

Bleeding Between Normal Menstrual Cycles: Long & Irregular Cycles [Periods]
Irregular Bleeding [Spotting] Following Menstrual Cycle [Period]
Suddenly Irregular Menstral Cycles
Irregular/Difficult Menstrual Cycles & PMS: Cramps, Bloating/Water Gain, Nausea, Etc.

Also, if I were you, I'd stay away from the hormones the doc wants to give you.  They are synthetic and quite possibly the wrong hormone and will most likely make your condition worse in the long run.

I have asked a version of this question in other threads but really have found no help so I am wondering if a) no one understood my question, or b) no one knew how to help.
I want to try to balance my cycle naturally BUT I have NO starting point.  Ever since I have had my kids, when I am not on some artificial hormones, pregnant, or breastfeeding, I spot or bleed all the time.  I am reading through the threads on balancing hormones naturally and am totally lost because I don't know where I would start.  I have been bleeding/spotting for the last 6 weeks, every day; ever since I got my period back after weaning my baby.  It started as a 7 day period, stopped for a few days, and started up as spotting that has continued ever since.  I have found lots of advice for women who have some type of cycle to chart and can add progesterone, etc for a certain part of their cycle to make up for what they need.  But I don't even have that to start with.  My bleeding is pretty consistently the same every day--small amount of spotting that is not enough to have me too worried yet but obviously I can't do this forever.  I have polycystic ovary syndrome and the medical dr's either advise artificial hormones or (the scary ones) start making noises about having a hysterectomy by the time I'm 35 or 40.  I don't like that idea, obviously, and while the artificial hormones aren't my pick either, I have changed my diet drastically, and am treating for parasites, and still am bleeding.  Will my body heal itself enough to stop bleeding constantly before I get anemic enough to have to do something?  Not to mention my dh isn't real fond of the situation.  Can anybody help me?

I'm certainly not an expert on these things, but here is some research that may help:

Quote
I have been bleeding/spotting for the last 6 weeks, every day; ever since I got my period back after weaning my baby.  It started as a 7 day period, stopped for a few days, and started up as spotting that has continued ever since.  I have found lots of advice for women who have some type of cycle to chart and can add progesterone, etc for a certain part of their cycle to make up for what they need.  But I don't even have that to start with.  My bleeding is pretty consistently the same every day--small amount of spotting that is not enough to have me too worried yet but obviously I can't do this forever.  I have polycystic ovary syndrome

Your hormones definitely need some adjusting.  Here is some information I found on what roles the different hormones play in the cycle, as well as where they are produced:

"Bleeding occurs after estrogen and progesterone levels decrease at the end of the previous cycle. This decrease causes the top layers of thickened lining of the uterus (endometrium) to break down and be shed. Later, as the follicle-stimulating hormone level decreases, only one follicle continues to develop. This follicle produces estrogen."  So estrogen is produced in the follicle...or in the ovary.

(Non-bleeding phase) "The ruptured follicle closes after releasing the egg and forms a corpus luteum, which produces progesterone." progesterone=ovary production as well.

"During most of this (non-bleeding) phase, the estrogen level is high. Progesterone and estrogen cause the lining of the uterus to thicken more, to prepare for possible fertilization. If the egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum degenerates and no longer produces progesterone, the estrogen level decreases, the top layers of the lining break down and are shed, and a new menstrual cycle begins."

So it appears to me that your body needs a boost in the levels of estrogen and testosterone...I would guess that your ovaries/hormone levels are stuck in the beginning bleeding phase.  I know there are supplements out there that can help with this, but you may want to research under 'menopause'  (don't get upset Wink ...this is just where the market is for natural hormone therapy) ...my Mom uses herbals exclusively in managing her hormone fluxuations as she goes through menopause, and has found them to be very helpful.  Here is another very interesting article about the roles of the different hormones and the menstral cycle: http://www.drgaelriverz.com/Hormones_site.html

Ever since I have had my kids, when I am not on some artificial hormones, pregnant, or breastfeeding, I spot or bleed all the time.  I am reading through the threads on balancing hormones naturally and am totally lost because I don't know where I would start.

There are lots and lots of herbs that are specifically used to balance the female cycle/hormones...and you don't need to be on a specific day of your cycle to start many of them.

Are you drinking Red Rasberry Leaf tea?  It is supposed to be one of the best herbs for women out there.  "Red raspberry is a wonderful general women’s tonic.  It contains calcium, iron, manganese,
phosphorus, vitamins A, B, C, D, E, F, and G."
Look at the information at http://www.bulkherbstore.com to read a lot about what red raspberry leaf tea is good for.

I have changed my diet drastically, and am treating for parasites, and still am bleeding.   Will my body heal itself enough to stop bleeding constantly before I get anemic enough to have to do something?

Actually, I'd be more concerned about toxicity from not bleeding than a small amount of spotting every day.  Be sure to take good care of yourself with diet and rest, and avoid stressing.  Stress messes up hormone balance all by itself Smiley
Are you taking a good multi?

Here are a few other interesting tidbits that might apply to your situation:

http://www.drgaelriverz.com/Hormones_site.html
"Poor protein digestion, as well as not enough protein,  is probably the #1 reason forhormone imbalance. Protein is responsible for the composition of our enzymes, and enzymes are catalysts for absolutely everything happening in the body. Our hormones are made of protein and are carried by fat.  Among other things, protein provides antibody production, it balances pH of the blood, is responsible forgrowth and maintenance, and it balances our fluid and electrolytes.
If you are receiving an adequate amount of protein in your diet, the next place to look is at your digestion.  Here’s an easy way to discover about your personal ability to digest protein:  Rub the TMJ muscle; this is the muscle where your upper and lower jaw join, and just below and slightly in front of the ear lobe.  Rub this in a circular motion with a good amount of pressure, six or seven times.  If you feel a residual soreness, you can bet that you are not properly digesting proteins."

"Another common concern is nutrient deficiencies that are caused by birth control pills. This is especially important for those women who have been taking the pill for over seven years. Studies have shown that B vitamins are the most commonly depleted nutrients with birth control use, which are crucial to nerve health. Any women taking any form of birth control should simultaneously take a high-potency B-complex vitamin. Folic acid is important for nerves and brain, and also is necessary for cell repair and development. Another commonly depleted nutrient is magnesium, with symptoms including muscle cramps, weakness, insomnia, kidney stones, bone loss, depression, nervousness, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Zinc is another essential mineral, important for wound healing."

This is a fascinating article on phytoestrogens: http://www.cyst101.com/phyto.htm

I don't know much about polycystic ovary syndrome, but does it entail inflammation?  This might relate:
"For those women who experience asthma, asthma can be directly related to a hormone imbalance and natural anti-inflammatories are the key to reducing symptoms. However, they will not provide immediate short-term relief. The best anti-inflammatory is turmeric. Other deeply pigmented foods also contain natural anti-inflammatories, such as anthocyanadins and epicatechins. Be sure to eat foods with natural anti-inflammatories regularly."
HTH!

Thanks Healthy.  One thing's for sure - I really doubt I'm going to go with any other synthetic hormones after my recent experience with provera!!  I have felt SO much better in the past 48 hours having not taken it.  Cheesy I just wish I could convince the dr to do a sono.  I mean, how do we know it's not a miscarriage, cysts, or something else that might need a D&C to stop the bleeding?? I'm going to read thru those threads.  Thanks for the references!
