She is 8 and we have never cut her hair. Conditioner is our best friend too  Wink
LKS

What kind of conditioner do you use? My 4.5 yo dd had VERY thick, beautiful, curly hair (daddy gets all the credit as you could braid all of my hair and it wouldn't be nearly 1/2 as thick as your daughters braid, at least by the look of the pic), my 3yo dd's hair is a bit thinner and easier to manage. I have been trying to find a nice natural conditioner but have been having a hard time finding one that we like. I always though I would just let my daughters hair grow and never cut it but I just can't seem to manage it.......... We keep hers mid back and I still struggle with all of the tangles and such. We don't use shampoo anymore so that helps.  Anyways, I would love to hear any good suggestions! Thanks!!!

B
I have to admit, we use Pantene. I would like to find something more natural but haven't yet.We did get the Hairshine spray from Beeyoutiful and that does help.
LKS
Oh! And keeping it braided or in a bun is the ONLY way to go. If she wears it down we pretty much have to wash and condition it to get the tangles out  Roll Eyes

Are you thinking of something like this: http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/lace.htm
What a great website!  It's now been bookmarked.  Wink  The twist braid is what I tried to describe long ago on this thread, but I had never seen it done before (that I could remember).  I thought I'd made it up!  Grin

I was just wondering if anyone can give me any tips on teaching my 4 yo daughter to get her hair done without having to fight a battle over it every time. She has always hated getting it combed and hated having barrettes and rubber bands in it. On church days I just make her sit still but I usually don't bother trying to put it up on other days. Is it purely a discipline/attitude issue or do you think it really hurts her as much as she claims? Has anyone tried anything creative in this area? She wants to do it herself - at what age can they do a good job of doing their own hair? How much say do you give them on what should be done with their hair? She is usually pretty obedient in most other areas of life, by the way.

It could be hurting her if you aren't combing her hair enough.  In other words her scalp needs a work out.  If her hair is not used to being combed/brushed, her scalp could be tender, but once you get it used to being combed/brushed her scalp will toughen up.  This has been my experience with all my sisters and from what I can remember of being a young girl.  I would comb/brush her hair daily.  I make my daughter let  me do her hair and I tell her to leave her "pretties" in her hair.  I feel it is purely an attitude problem and I am going to win.  I do let her comb/brush her own hair before I do her hair.  She needs to learn how to do this.  I do not do her hair every day, as I don't always like to have my hair up.  Sometimes I let her pick out which "pretties" she wants in her hair.  I also tell her how nice her hair looks and that princesses like to do their hair.  My dh always makes over her accomplishments and tells her how she is learning to be a big girl like "princess" mommy. Smiley  This seems to work for us.  She rarely fights me when I go to do her hair now.  She is going to be 3 next month.

I also have a little girl. When I brush her hair out, two different things seem to help.

1. We talk about what we are going to do next this morning. Even if the discussion is simply about what is going to go on her toast (butter or jelly?). Sometimes I make these discussions much more involved than I would if just asking in passing. Meaning -->"Oh, you want butter? butter comes from what? A cow? Cows say ...? moo!" If that conversation wans, pick something else mundane.

2. I don't like barbie's in general, but I gave my daughter a very basic barbie head for her to play with.  She does not spend a great deal of time playing with it on a daily basis. What is does help with is her brushing, spraying detangler, and fixing the doll's hair, while I do her own hair.  It is a great distractor.

Here is a link for a pic of my corn rowed hair but it is not a very good pic. I have not got all my disposable camera pics developed yet and they have some pics on them of all sides of my hair. I miss my corn rows but I'm sure glad to be able to scrub my scalp clean at least.

I lost a ton of hair when my niece and I took the corn rows out. it fried my hair in places making it broke off and sorter in certain spots. but I would still do it again if I had the chance.

A beautician said corn rows are not the healthiest thing for anglo hair because of the consistency of the hair.

below is 2 more pics of my hair. 1 with the beads in it from the front and one after we took the corn rows out. Pardon my swollen plain jane makeupless face in the one pic.

Ok, I was on here a few months ago and I found a link to a a website that had detailed instructions for updos on long hair.  I have searched both WTM and googled and I cannot find it!  Can anyone help?  I was on a different computer so I could not save it in my favorites and now I cannot look it up on history.  I would love to get back to that website.  Thanks!

Any ideas for growing out bangs? My 6 yr.old's bangs are in her eyes and they won't stay pinned back. They're still too short to put in the braid. I have been known to just pigtail them on her forehead so it looks like she has a horn sticking out of the front of her head, but I only do that when we're not going anywhere.  Roll Eyes  She's having a hard time seeing with the hair in her face. Thanks! (BTW, the scaly sores on her head went away... they just vanished!)

When I grew out my bangs, I started parting my hair on the side and then combing my bangs towards the side opposite the part.  Does that make sense?  After a few days, they started to be trained to stay over out of my eyes.

Stretchy headbands work real well for this.  My girls and I have gone through bangs/no-bangs so many times, and this is one of our favorite solutions for that difficult stage.

I did this with my daughter, too.  It only lasted a couple of weeks.  She just looked like she had a pineapple top on her head.   Wink

Any ideas for growing out bangs?

When doing this for my 5 yr. old I always had her wear a headband which worked great with most ways I did her hair. As they grew longer I would sometimes do a high bun held in place with those tiny plastic hair clamps and that would also catch the long bangs and keep them back outta her hair.

Also you can use lots of those little barrettes like the gymnastics girls wore at the olympics with a bun or ponytail

French braids will often catch the bangs that are long enough to be in the eyes.  You just have to start the braid a bit higher than normal.

Help! My sister is getting married, and I'm a bridesmaid (gulp!). She hasn't figured out how for us too do our hair. We all have long hair. One bridesmaid has hair around her waist, the others hair is to her knees, and my hair is about half way between my waist and my knees and its thick. I think all of us have fine hair too. If you have any suggestions on how we can comb it, PLEASE tell us. We have a while to decide. Her wedding is June 6th.
 Thanks Grin

Something that is pretty is when you make a crown out of a braid around her head and still have long hair hanging down.  You could put little flowers in the braid too.  I wish I had a link to a picture.  I just know my friends and I had a braid book or magazine when we were kids and this one was one of my favorites.

Thanks. That crown style sounds pretty, we'll have to look in to it. The photo on that last link lovingmomof2posted is really pretty.

P.S.You might think I'm a little silly for asking about hair styles this far in advance, but the last wedding I was in I didn't know how I was going to comb or WHO was going to comb my hair till like a few minutes before! Shocked Serious.

Well, depending on the style(s) of the dresses you ladies will have, here's a few ideas:

http://imaginary-styles.iwarp.com/ - Mostly updos and half updos from the Lord of the Rings movies and one or two from Pirates of the Caribbean and Lion in Winter.

http://intimelyfashion.com/main/?cat=10 - Regency and Gibson Girl (think Anne of Green Gables) style updos.

http://www.frannyslonghairstyles.com/ - Lots and lots of photos of everything from braids to french twists.

http://www.haarkram.e-something.de/start.html - A tribute to the french twist with a few other updos thrown in for good measure.

http://www.melissasbraids.com/index.html - More braids!

As mention previously in this thread, Dreamweaver Braiding has excellent braiding (and twisting) instructions and examples.

These hair sites with instructions are great, but I STILL can't seem to do a single one right.  Is anyone else having problems braiding and cascading hair even with on-line directions?  I think I do much better seeing it done in person. No fair.  Grin

For me, once I learned the basic stuff (French and Dutch braids) everything else came fairly easily. Also, lots and lots of practice with many rereadings of instructions and studying of the pictures.  It helps when you have 3 or 4 sisters to practice on. Wink

I just got an octopus clip for my 10 yo sis, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how I can use it on her? I know you can do a bun and just clip it in with the octopus, but was looking for other options...

In case it helps, she has pretty thick, medium length hair.
