Soy sauce: is Bragg's actually healthy?
« on: May 14, 2008, 02:03:26 PM » by marksgirl
I have purchased Bragg's Liquid Aminos for years, because I was under the impression that it's healthier for you than regular soy sauce.  (No wheat, less salt, etc.)  Now I'm reading that soy needs to be fermented to eliminate the "bad" things about it and make it healthy, and when I went to the Bragg's site, it says it is NOT fermented.  Will it matter, since soy sauce is generally not consumed every day (or even every week), and in such small portions?

I am in the (slow) process of reading The Whole Soy Story.  In it, the assertion is made tha Braggs is NOT a healthy alternative to Soy Sauce.  You can imagine my cry of disappointment!  Now, don't ask me WHY it isn't good (even though I read it.)  Something about being unfermented (like you said) along with "free MSG"....

*sigh*  All I can say is GRRRRR!

Don't you hate it when you think you're doing something healthy and find out later it was "bad"?!!  That has happened to me many times through the years and it's very frustrating!

I consider soy sauce junk food.  So, we eat it a couple of times each year when salt won't do (like stir-fry), and I choose Bragg's over the regular stuff because I consider it a "less-guilt" soy sauce - not guilt-free, but better than the really bad ones.
I don't feel any worse than when my son's coach treats the team to a hot dog after a big win.  It's a rare thing, so live it up, 'cause it won't happen again for a while.   Cheesy  My philosophy is that I should do what I can to give my family a healthy lifestyle without it being a burden to anyone.
Now, if I ever come across a better brand I would switch, but I still wouldn't be a fan of soy.   Tongue     ~L

The soy sauce I have now says "Naturally Brewed".  Do you think that might mean it's been fermented?  It is the Marukin Low Salt, and the ingr. are water, soybeans, wheat and sea salt.  Contains no preservative.

That's the kind that Sally Fallon, writer of "Nourishing Traditions," recommends we buy so it must be fermented.  I buy the Kikoman Naturally Brewed when I can find it.

We aren't as health-conscious as we should be in our eating, but I try to make small changes when I can.  Well, on some things, anyway!  I've been working a clothing road show at Costco, and an employee's comment about their food court got me thinking.  I've been a "regular" at Costco since 1984 when they opened up in Portland, Oregon (I think their second warehouse?), and I've eaten plenty of polish dogs, at least 10 per year, probably more on average, so in 24 years I figure I've eated anywhere from 250-500+ Costco dogs! Shocked  They're soooo yummy with the sauerkraut, too! Cheesy
We don't "eat" enough soy sauce to worry about, really (esp me), but since Bragg's costs a lot more than "regular", if I can't be healthy, at least I can be more frugal!

Thanks, HB!  I appreciate the link.  I'd looked under the dif. subject headings, but hadn't read all the threads.  I guess when this bottle is gone, we'll be going a different route!

Bragg's contains MSG!??!  Wow, thanks for the warning.

I've noticed that the last couple of times I've done stir-fry, my kids have a strange, almost musty odor to their urine and body.  Could this have something to do with MSG or maybe an inability to deal with all of the aminos in the Braggs (?)

If I understand the process correctly...It looks something like this.  All soy sauce contains msg (I think)...natural soy sauce is fermented and the msg is naturally created by the process of fermentation.  MSG is a preservative and is most likely what gives soy sauce it's characteristic salty flavor...so if Bragg's doesn't ferment their soy sauce, then A) it wouldn't be salty unless they added salt or msg and B) it wouldn't have any form of natural preservative and therefore would have a very limited shelf life.    this is pure speculation based on everything I've read in WTM, but it sounds logical to me.   Grin

I am going to add to HB's speculation and say that the MSG that (we think) is  used in Bragg's is probably naturally derived and not the chemically formulated.  Now, I don't know enough about MSG to know if that means it's okay to eat in small amounts, or if it's just as bad.  I try to avoid it altogether because I am unsure.   ~Layla
