How to Garden books ????

We are wanting to start gardening, but really don't know where to begin. We have a lot to learn. There are so many gardening books out there; I don't want to waste my time reading books that aren't going to help me that much or only confuse me. I thought I would ask for recommendations from fellow WTMers. We have sandy soil, so if you know of any books that specifically deal with this that would be great. I know its late for this year, but I want to start reading so hopefully I can be prepared for next year. Undecided

It's a whole gardening philosophy, but we really like the book "Square Food Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew.

Have you had success with this? We are now building 8 inch deep beds to try again.

Yes, we really like SFG. We're doing a 10x10 this year and find it much more manageable to plant and weed and harvest 1 foot blocks. I look at some people's gardens with rows and I see a lot of wasted space. I also like knowing that we can plant tomatoes every foot when I see other people with 2-3 feet between their tomato plants.

There are a million books out there! Organic gardens, vegetables only, raised beds, vertical gardens, pots, patios, etc. Decide how much space you have, what all you want to plant, and how much work you want to do.

PLANT ONLY WHAT YOU LIKE TO EAT! That is so key!

I have been doing Sqaure Foot gardening for years now, with not great success so that's why I was wondering. It all makes sense, but I think the beds need to be deeper. Or I just do not have a green thumb, lol. Some things I have success with and some not, but as the years go by it gets worse. Just doesn't make sense, but we will try with deeper beds this time. I know his philosophy about only needing shallow beds, but when you have it on top of red clay, maybe that's why. Anyway, going to try again...

I am reading a new gardening/homesteading book that would be extremely beneficial to those that either live in the city or have very little property/acreage. It's called The Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan. It shares how you can have fruit, veggies, grains, chickens, bees, etc. all on 1/4 of an acre!
