Can someone give me some thoughts on this subject?  What to do for a hernia?

Don't know a whole lot about it. Mostly I have heard of folks try to binding them with soft rags to help with the pain and then eventually have surgery. One man said he wished he had had the surgery done much sooner as it gave him sooo much relief. My FIL is elderly and just wears a binding over them. It is a good thing he doesn't have to do heavy work anymore though because lifting really aggravates it.

I would get it surgically fixed.  It is unlikely to mend itself and will likely only become more painful, and depending on the type, could become dangerous if left untended.  I would seriously consider your options, and ask your physician if there would be any drawback to waiting....basically load them up with questions so you can make your best choice.

My dad and my sister have both had hernia surgery. All is well now with both of them. My sister just had this surgery 1 week ago. They were operating to repair one hernia and found another one. They were able to "repair" both. I was wondering if there was an alternative to surgery, but the surgery option worked for both of them. Both my dad and sister had been dealing with this nagging hernia pain for some time, so they were glad to be rid of it. My sister was even able to have her surgery done laproscopically (sp?), so there is minimal scarring. I agree with joyfullyhis - load the doctor up with questions and make the choice that's right for you.

From what we can tell now surgery is the only option. He has to have a surgery for another problem at the same time so might as well fix all of it. We saw a doctor about it today, its all set up. Thanks for the response.

Hubby just found out he has a hernia.  OK, I"m ignorant!  What is it?? What causes it??  I'm confused.  I thought it was intestines poking through the abdominal wall, or something like that, but then WHY would the doctor need to check....elsewhere....to feel a hernia??  Why the turning the head and coughing??

Here's a link.  You can look at several other article sections and get lots of answers.

I had hernias with all five of my pregnancies, esp towards the end when the baby is pushing up against the diaphragm.  My chiropractor was able to put the muscles back into place and that would help for awhile.  He even taught me how to do it.   It would help for awhile until I did something to aggravate it, like reaching over my head to grab something from a shelf.  I asked my chiropractor about other hernias in the groin area and he said he has one that he periodically  "fixes" on himself.
So maybe if your hernia is not too advanced you could check with the chiropractor.

I too have a hernia, and would love to know what restrictions if any were placed on those who had the surgery.  I realize there will be restrictions during the healing, but we live on a farm.  I have to lift heavy milk buckets to strain milk, etc.  Once I am healed, is all this going to be off limits?
