  Favorite Baby/Kids'/Children's Names
« on: August 10, 2006, 06:42:09 PM » by Youthful One
Okay, it's odd for me to post this here, but I'm kind of struggling as to where else to go...

Baby #5 is due within the next week, and I'm still looking for a name for her.  That in and of itself doesn't bother me, as a couple of my kids didn't have names until a few days after they were born.

To give a bit of background, my normal process for selecting a name for a child is to pray about the child and what God would say about him/her.  I then take that 'definition' or meaning, and look for a name with that meaning.  The majority of my kids (3 of 4 so far) have names that have come from Strong's Concordance - not exactly 'names', but words that came from the scriptures that correspond to the child's meaning.

Here's my problem/question:
I have a scripture that I really feel God has led me to regarding this girl.  The key word in it (in English) has tremendous meaning, and so I was very excited about it.  However, when I looked up the Greek word, it is spelled like (and IS, essentially) thesaurus.  Not only is thesaurus a common English word with a different meaning, but it is a masculine noun.  There is another Hebrew word that has a similar meaning, and sounds lovely, but it is used as a masculine name[/i] as well!  My hubby really likes the Hebrew one, but I'm concerned about naming my girl a masculine name - particularly if she goes to minister (like a missionary) to anybody who is familiar with Hebrew/Jewish culture!

Any thoughts/suggestions?
Anybody familiar with Jewish/Hebrew culture that could verify that she might raise some eyebrows if named a masculine name?

(While this is more common for modern-day Americans to switch genders on a name, I am more concerned for my children's future in ministry than doing something in fashion today.  Particularly in this society.)

Thanks!

Have you tried some baby names links on the internet.  There is one that I will try to post: http://www.babynamenetwork.com/
It has a section for each ethnic group and you could type in the name or just look in the Hebrew section.  It may help you with the name and spelling.  I know that in Hebrew the name Michael is male or female.  So, perhaps it would depend on the spelling or something.  Good luck! Wink

I LOVE baby names and meaning and combinations, and I thought it would be neat to make a thread of baby names where you can post your thoughts, whether they're names you have already named your children, or something you would like to name your future children, or someone else's name you thought sounded neat...just whatever!!!

Hubby and I are prophecy buffs.  So, we named our second son Isaiah 53 (prophecy about the death of Jesus).  Our first son is Micah Daniel "Who is like God. God is my Judge", but we are considering changing it to Micah 5:2 (prophecy about the birth of Jesus).  That leaves our next child to be named after the second coming Shocked.  Thessalonians Huh Huh Huh  Funny, my grandpa's name was Lonie (pronounced LOW-NEE). My husband and I have chosen to name our kids with their first name being a Bible name and their middle name being a family member who is a strong Christian.
I love to have a story to tell them about why they have the name and what admirable qualities that person possessed
Choosing a name is fun!

I never really gave much thought to name meanings with my first two children...Ashley and Veronica.  With Veronica we just wanted something you didn't hear very often.

Our third is Ethan...steady...Gary...named after dh's uncle who was killed in a car accident.

Our fourth, who came after we were POSITIVE that we were done is Moriah...the Lord will provide...Grace...unmerited favor.  The Lord gave us that name before we knew that we were having a girl.  She is definitely a gift and blessing from the Lord!

Maybe we'll be blessed with more...I'm really into name meanings now.

After naming my first two with some familiar traditional names, I think if I have  another one it will be a little bit different.  My next will be my third, so if it a girl, I like Trinity.  Also, a family that I once knew had a daughter named Treasure.  I thought that was so beautiful.
I like the thought of naming children after themes.  Such as:
Precious stones and metals:  Diamond, Pearl, Sterling
Flowers and Herbs:  Rosemary, Lily, Lavender, Sage
Americana:  Justice, Liberty, Faith
I sound like I am decorating a kitchen more than naming a child!!  But it is fun to think of it!

I like one Bible name with each of ours, but I also like odd names and family names.  We my in-laws help us choose with our first, now they think they can pick all of them.  Undecided  We don't share any more either.  Here's ours:

Jared Kelly (middle is after his dad)
Alena (uh-LAY-nuh) Faith (not technically a Bible name, but it's in there)
Elizabeth Carolyn (our mom's names jammed together)

If this one is a boy his middle name will be either Robert after our dads or Clifton after our grandfathers.  Other than that....I'm lost.   Cheesy

hi We have three children..... Tanner Lee, Selah(See-luh)Dawn, and a baby, Lane Edward.
I especially always liked Selah because The Psalms was my favorite book in the Bible and the word selah is at the end of some Psalms.  Poeple compliment me on her name and say they've never heard of it.  I actually have seen it in a baby name book though!! I am all for DIFFERENT names!!

Wow, those are some awesome names.  I really love our names too, Our first son, my husband had his name picked out before we were even married, Joseph wayne.  But since there were already 3 or 4 Joseph's that we knew, I asked if we could change the "ph" to an "f" So we have Josef Wayne(my husband's name)  With our second, I had a dream that we named him Jafeth David, Jafeth after the biblical character, and David after my dad.  My hubby didn't like it too much at first, but it grew on him.  We also substituted the "ph" to an "f" with his name.  It fits him so well.  I did get alot of negative though, mostly like, "Why would you want to do that your child, What kind of a name is that...." Well, I looked it up on the internet to find the meaning and one of the variations is Yaphet, which means Handsome.  And that he is....SO....for more kids?  We really want a daughter...but have no clue on what to name her, I have this feeling I'll have to look at her for a day or so before I know what to call her.  SO, this thread is great, maybe i'll find the name I'm looking for after all.  My husband wants to continue with the "J" theme, but I kinda want to break off, since it really wasn't a planned thing...
But our next boy's name will either be---Jonathan Adam, or Levi Adam.  WE both agree on the middle name...hee-hee...Whenever he comes, he already has a name...Our daughter on the other hand, well,,,I'll just have to wait and see....Smiley

When we were trying to decide on a name, my parents asked what names we were thinking about. My husband said Mckayla. I said, what? We are? He said yes you suggested it when you were reading the baby name book.  Well I didn't remember even thinking about that name, but I did like it. I looked in my name book later, and it is not even in my book! But we both liked it, so thats her  name. The cool thing is we wanted a name with a biblical meaning and Mckayla means "who is like God". Pretty cool! So her nam is Mckayla Jeanne (pronounced like Jeannine) And her sister is Cassandra Lianne.

My oldest girl's name is Marcail (pronounced "Mar Kale").  I chose it from a book and my husband wanted the name Mark after an uncle that died suddenly but was concerned about causing grief with his family if he named the baby Mark.  So when our little girl was born we decided that Marcail would be perfect.
It took quite a long time of searching baby name books and then on the internet for the meaning but we finally discovered that it is an Old Scottish version of Margaret and means 'pearl'.
We also have Alexandra Emily and Joel Stephen John.

Has anyone noticed that some  names most definitely have a personality attached to them?
I've noticed it especially with some boys names ...Daniel, Joshua and John to name a few.   Eg.  Every Daniel I know - wether they are young or old are quiet/a bit shy, intelligent - esp. at Science, more interested in reading a book than playing outside and great with computers.  Any others that people have noticed?

Lol, Annie, my brother Nathan married a girl named Zephyr Zycheck, and her sisters/brother names are Zorena, Zelina, Zina, and Zared.

Mama Sita: I love the name "Jubilee"!

My children are: Joseph Courage, Ryshoni Joy, and Hannah Sunshine. The next will be Elijah Music.

Joseph Courage: Joseph = God will prosper (Gabe's middle name). We felt like God promised us we would prosper, and so named him that in faith.

Ryshoni Joy: Ryshoni is the Hebrew word for "first, initial, primary, that which is given to God." It is the word used to describe the "first fruits tithe." Again we felt like God was promising us that He was about to bless us above the norm, and that Ryshoni was the first fruits of that blessing. Shortly after she was born we lost our business as a bookstore, almost going bankrupt, and took an entirely new direction which led us... here...

Hannah Sunshine: Grace and Light. Gabe felt like we were to give her name fitting for a queen because she will be a queen someday. I don't know what that means, but he felt like Hannah Sunshine was the right name. Her nickname is "Honey Sunny." Or Honey Bunny, Honey Funny...

And Elijah Music: My God is THE God. An arrogant, defiant statement in the face of world full of false prophets and sin-induced drought. We believe that Elijah will be a handful, to say the least - a fighter.

After Joe Courage (the 1st) was born, I had a dream in which I saw four of our children, half grown, playing/performing together on a stage. I saw personality, hair and eye color, birth order... I felt like I knew each one of them. Joseph was playing a keyboard - a song he had written - and looked about 17 years old. Dark headed/eyed Ryshoni was wearing a red dress and was stunningly beautiful - she was singing in a deep startling voice that filled the room. Hannah Sunshine was tall and golden brown, wearing blue to match her eyes, and playing a violin so sweet as to make you cry. Elijah Music was behind a drum set, and his wild head of blond-streaked hair was flying all over the place as he played, nearly hidden (about 11 years) behind the drum set.

So... we don't know for sure Elijah Music is going to be Elijah Music, but it'd be hard to convince me otherwise.  Grin

Here is mine, copied basically verbatim from 7xSunday:

Ok, I am going to prove once and for all how strange my husband and I are, and expose our weakness for pop culture.   Tongue

We tend to pick the names first, and then find out the meanings later.

Before our first child was a "twinkle in our eye" my husband woke up and told me that he dreamed we had a son whose middle name was "Danger." I laughed it off but he said "No really, I like it...I think we should do it." I had to admit I liked it too even though most people would think it's nuts. I had always liked the name "Jarvis" (found in an Anne of Green Gables book) and I told him that I thought Jarvis sounded good with Danger. So we kind of settled on it, knowing that most people would find it strange, but that our friends would probably love it (and of course, they do!) .  Now here is where it gets interesting. After I got pregnant I found out that Jarvis means "Skilled with a Spear." We kind of laughed about that..."Skilled with a spear...dangerous!" And then my MIL caught wind of what we were going to name our child and told us she looked it up in the dictionary and that Danger meant "exposure to evil" and did we really want to name our child something that meant exposure to evil? I practically shouted with joy YES! Suddenly I realized that our son's name was about spiritual warfare...he would be skilled with a spear when exposed to evil!! What I love about his name is that it sounds strange and even a little scary but we are very comforted knowing that in our strange and scary world our son is being equipped. Who is not exposed to evil? It's a fact of life. But I am confident that our son will be skilled against it. And the name has truly grown on our family, especially my father who loves 60s spy shows Cool He has a hard time admitting it, but I can tell he loves it. So, son number one is Jarvis Danger, and he's now 3 and a half.

While Jarvis was still in utero my husband and I were watching the Charlie Brown Christmas special. When Charlie cries out "Can anyone tell me what Christmas is all about?" Linus takes the stage and begins to quote from the book of Luke, King James version and tells them the story of Jesus born in Bethlehem. I have seen it many times before but it still brought tears to my eyes...and we knew we wanted a Linus. We love that character because while he is insecure he is also precocious and sensitive. He really reminds me of my brother, Edward.  Linus means "flax" so the meaning isn't that special but Linus was also the name of a first century church leader. We chose Kaspar for his middle name because we just liked it, but it is also a traditional name of one of the Magi. We liked the German spelling best. It means "Keeper of the Treasure." Linus Kaspar is 18 months.

My husband says the Holy Spirit named our first two children. I think God must have such a great sense of humor!

I have the name Alice Magdalene picked out for a girl, for my grandmother and for Mary Magdalene. Alice means noble or truth. I beleive this is name for this next one!

I also have the name Felix picked out for the next boy. Felix is also a biblical name and it means "Happy." I have Sebastian or Theophilus picked out for a middle name. Sebastian means "revered" but Theophilus means "Friend of God" and I think "Happy Friend of God" is such a cool name! But hubby doesn't care for it, so it will probably be Sebastian.

We have 5 kids.  The first two are family names.  We have a Carl Alexander after my husband.  Our second is Willaim Parker.  William after father in law and Parker after my grandfather.  Next we have a Nathan Philip.  Bible names.  Then we had a girl!!!  Esther Mary.  My grandmother's name is Hester but I wanted a bible name. I got the best of both worlds.  Mary after grandmother-in-law and my great granmother and the Biblical Mary.  Our last was concieved when my husband was home for R and R with the military.  I wanted a way to honor my husband's military service.  My husband's best friend in college was killed in a car accident in Germany while on active duty several years ago.  His name was Daniel Abell.  We named our son after him.  His name is Daniel Abell Trautman.
I recently met a little girl named Hadassah like in the book of Esther. I also love the name Josiah but my husband doesn't like that name.  My husband is of German heritage and wants to name a child Gustaf. I told child number 20 can be named Gustaf.  I don't think we will come close so I am okay. Grin
My sisiter loves the name Paige for a girl but her last name is Turner so that is out. Grin
If I ever have another girl Wink I like the name Tabitha Baccus.  Baccus was my grandmothers maiden name.  My sister's kids have great names  Samantha Grace,  Bailey Noel,  Isaiah Paul, and Abigail Laurel.

Here are ours:

Jolene Catherine

Jared William

Chelsea Lynne

Seth Forrest

Ethan Lee

Huh  Hannah Huh Ruth (due in October)

Everyone has a family name, always the middle name.

I like names that aren't run of the mill but not too "out there" that the child will regret having to live with.  :-)))  My husband is a bit more traditional than me.  I wanted something different than Hannah but will probably have to settle with being able to spell it differently.  :-)

Some of our "stories".  :-)  The first three we were lost or backslidden so meanings and that whole idea didn't occur to us.  But even with that God had some providential working going on.  Jared means descender and he is just like his Dad in personality and life events so far.  Chelsea means port of ships and she is called to a life of missions somehow (initially as a single lady to train and help other missionaries but hopefully longterm as a wife).  Seth was our first reversal baby and even before we knew we were pregnant my husband was reading his Bible and felt like God told him that we would be "starting over" sort of like Adam and Eve.  Ethan means strong, or bold, or steady and Ethan is a bold, beefy boy - no wimpiness.  And he has his Dad's middle name and looks JUST like Daddy.  No particular story about Jolene's name.  This next baby's middle name is Ruth after a grandmother and means "friend" and she is due very close to a very good friends's b-day - I am sort of hoping that God would allow her to be born that day just as a bit of "confirmation".  We'll see.  :-)

Lots of our names have a "nature" connotation but that is not fully consistent.  Lynne means waterfall, Forrest obviously means forest, Lee means meadow, my names (Lori Ellen) mean laurel (leaves) and moon, Jim's middle name is also Lee (meadow).

So that's our deal.  :-)  I guess one would have to have LOTS of children to satisfy all the names they like.  :-)

We have one baby named Samuel Justice.  We had the name picked out even before we were married...and it stuck!  My husband's name is Justin, so we thought Justice was a great spin off of his name.  And Samuel, means "asked of God" (I'm pretty sure)  We're praying for more babies to name and waiting. Grin I would agree that I SO many girl names I like, but not as many boy names.  Hmm...

I love baby names too!

We've chosen each of our children's names because of their meanings.  I like manly boy names and very feminine girl names.

Anthony Joseph 4th (AJ) was named thus for obvious reasons.  But, I always loved the name Anthony even before I knew my husband.
Anthony: worthy of praise
Joseph: may Jehovah add another child Cheesy
We pray that he will always be worthy of praise and honor

Gideon Joel was supposed to be a girl.  Smiley  Or so I thought.  The funny thing was two weeks before he was born I came up with this name and sure enough he was a boy! Shocked
Gideon: mighty warrior
Joel: the Lord is God
We pray that he will be a mighty warrior for Christ

Our daughter Halle Joy was actually supposed to be Hallelujah Joy.  I also liked the name Celia for her, but I was afraid to name her this because it meant "Heaven"  I had a fear that the Lord would take her from me if we gave her that name. Little did I know that the Lord was preparing our hearts because He was going to take her home.  After she passed away at 13 days old I looked up her name...
Halle: home
Joy:  Joyful in God
Amazing what God does, isn't it?

Caleb Joshua (Josh) was a name my husband always wanted.  It's a great "Manly" name. Cheesy
Caleb: bold
Joshua: Jehovah is Salvation
We pray that he will boldly proclaim the salvation of the Lord.

My children's names are

Zane Joseph

Corban Isaiah

both boys and very difficult to pick out.  My husband and I always agreed on a girls name from the get go, but no girl.  Infact, if able to choose I would choose 2 more boys!!!!

Girls name we like
