  Food Poisioning
« on: June 13, 2008, 11:03:15 PM » by Wing
Hi, I have not yet seen a thread dedicated to food poisoning, so I am starting one.  I believe my 3 and 4 year olds have food poisoning.  They have been complaining of tummy aches for two days, and have had diahrrea (sometimes with blood) non-stop, to the point where they are messing their underwear, which they never do.  My questions are, how long should this last?  What can I do to help?  When should I get worried?  Is this what food poisoning looks like?

I know taking charcoal can help with food poisining. I mix some of the powder from a capsule with applesauce and my kids will eat it that way.

Charcoal does work.  You may have to give it after each bout of diarrhea.

I have also used TTU for this.  I also give this after each visit to the bathroom.

The BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet will probably be the best until this is over.  A Dr. once told me to give plain yogurt along with this and as a treat they could have plain Pringles chips.  Neither of these things should upset their tummies and the yogurt will deliver some needed probiotics.

Hope they are feeling better soon!

What is TTU?  Thank you so much for your replies.  I have wanted to give them charcoal since it started, but I certainly didn't know how to get a big ol capsule down their gullet.  Applesauce is such a great idea!  Can you guys tell me, is what I described what food poisoning looks like?

Wing - TTU is Tummy Tune Up, a probiotic supplement in capsule form available from a company called Beeyoutiful.  Internet.  But any good bacteria you can get in them will be helpful.

Food poisoning is usually abrupt, violent, and then subsides.  Depending upon what they ate, and when, could help determine.  Another question is, have they been to a swimming pool recently?  It's major bacteria season now with summer, and pools are live petrie dishes, if you ask me!  Lots of kids get the poops after being in a public pool, esp an outdoor one.

Do they have virus symptoms?  Lethargy?  Fever?  Aches?  Headache?

Are they interested in eating?  And drinking?

If everything they eat and drink is still going through them, it may be something other than food poisoning.  Usually the food thing goes through a person and comes to an end.  Maybe their little guts are weakened and just not handling the food and drink thing yet.

Good bacteria will be your best bet.  Don't give any sugar at all, or even fruit juice.  Blueberries are good.  Bananas.  That BRAT diet is the way to go if they feel like eating.  Black tea in small amounts.

Keep us posted!

My ds had food poisoning when he was 2. It was pretty scarey~~ he woke up in the morning and couldn't even walk-- he crawled. I had a 2 wk old baby at the time. He looked very sick, so i wanted him to take a drink of water-- vitro tox, and i don't know what else I was trying to give him-- he refused to take anything, so I forced it down his throat-- he puked it right back up after he had it swallowed! We took him to a lady that is no Dr, but has a lot of wisdom-- she just started rubbing his feet and hands, becuz they were cold, my dh jumped on the rebounder with him for a whole hr solid, she put carrot juice up his rectum,. he was better in a days time, but he was very very sick! I'm not sure if food poisoning works like that with everyone, but I agree with CC, that it may be something else?  My nephew had some of the same symptoms that your children have (they live in East Africa) and he had stomach parasites! I know it sounds really gross, but there is ways of getting rid of them. If I remember correctly he had tummy aches, and they noticed his tummy was hard! God bless you with wisdom, mamma!

The kids are doing much better.  They only went #2 once this morning and have been happily playing all day.  For the last couple of days they were bent over in pain, so this is quite a difference.  I did not get a chance to try the charcoal, but I have been giving them probiotics, and also gave the 3 year old (who had it the worst) some cider vinegar in apple juice last night.   The only thing that I can think of that may be the culprit is some pork ribs we BBQd a few nights ago.  But since we have a lot going on I can't really remember the timeline of when we had the pork, and when the diahrrea started, so I can't say for sure.  That was the only thing that they have eaten lately that is not part of our usual diet.  Thanks again to everyone for your help!  Seeing blood in the toilet sets off major alarms in a mother's head of course.  Having this forum has been such a blessing to our family!

I know this is two days late but I felt it an important Q & A so acording to all the info I've read on the web it is safe to nurse.
http://www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_asklc_ans35.html

But this one says to Pump & Dump til you find out if you truly have food poisoning.
http://parenting.ivillage.com/newborn/nbreastfeed/0,,40w8,00.html
"Usually food poisoning stays localized in the intestinal tract and doesn't pass into breastmilk. Rarely, it can become systemic. If a bloodculture shows a systemic infection, breastfeeding will need to be stopped until tests are negative."

A friend of mine had Food poisoning while Prego and everything turned out OK so I would feed... with caution.

Does anyone know if some people are more susceptible to food poisoning than others?

My mom seems to get it a little too frequently.  Well, more than anyone else in the family.  She seems to always get it from a restaurant.  The last two times has been after eating seafood.  Once in Argentina.  This weekend she and Dad were in Florida and she ate shrimp and she was very ill all night and the next day. The thing is, she and Dad shared a plate, so it could have been something else, I suppose.  There were some others in the party that weren't feeling well, but didn't get full blown SICK, like Mom did.  She is fine today.  Good thing, because they flew back home this morning.  Puking on a plane is not my idea of fun! That's a good question, Gwen.  My three-year-old throws up every time she eats fish, and we're just assuming it's an allergy as well.

A large percentage of food poisoning is from shellfish.  Just a bit old, or a bit "off" and even proper cooking can't kill all the gunk.  My husband got sick twice from shellfish, when we ate the same thing, and he's stayed away ever since, except for a bite here and there.  We don't know if he has an actual allergy or what.  I do know that food poisoning doesn't affect everyone the same - some can become violently ill while others feel icky and maybe have a bit of poo.  Depends upon your GI tract and your good bacteria.

Most restaurant menus print warnings now about shellfish, meats, eggs, etc.  Some people think it's the nature of what the shellfish eat - they are bottom feeders and filters for toxins in the sea.  But then again, I grew up eating TONS of shellfish and I never once got sick from it.  Not until a nasty round of calamari in college - I could puke thinking of it.

If I were your mama, I'd stay off the restaurant shellfish, and only eat freshly bought, freshly caught, freshly prepared at home.  And take a good round of Tummy Tune Up before she eats it  Wink

Just a related thought... whenever my dad feels ill, he likes to drink tea and eat saltine crackers. This bland combination is a great thing to munch when you're "testing the waters" after a bout with a stomach bug.

Also, if you're particularly dehydrated, it can be helpful to replenish your body with electrolytes (will I get thrown out for suggesting Gatorade under the circumstances?  Grin) not just plain water.

I asked Mom what she thought about a possible allergy.  She really doesn't think so.  She did mention that she also got sick on the fake crab once.  Maybe it is just the gunk that can grow in seafood that makes her sick.  If it isn't the freshest, maybe her system can't handle it.  Huh  We did have crab and shrimp in sandwiches during Thanksgiving week.  She did not get sick off of it.  We bought it at Safeway.

I am just thankful that she is doing great, now.

If different enzymes digest different components of foods, then it could be that her 'mix' of digestive enzymes is not as hardy when it comes to seafood.  I would call that more of a 'sensitivity' to seafood.

Seafood does grow bacteria much more quickly, as fish are cold blooded animals...so their bacterias grow at much cooler temps than warm blooded meats.  Also, in restaurants and such, they are probably more apt to pass around bacteria just from using the same utensils/cutting boards, etc. for too long and not washing hands frequently enough.  Tongue

I would stick to purchasing fresh smelling seafood and doing home prep on it.
