  Respiratory/Seasonal Allergies
« on: April 26, 2006, 09:25:10 AM » by emb2x2
Does anyone out there know how to treat stuffy noses caused by allergies?  My husband and 9y old son suffer so much this time of year and it leads to much difficulty with lack of sleep and distractibility.  It makes my husband tired all the time and my son has so much trouble concentrating and doing his school work.  It's like he has ADD for 3 months.  It's not funny when every spring it gets so bad you don't know how you can keep homeschooling.  Antihistimines over the counter do NOT work and have too many side effects.  Help!

Short term, I would try chamomile tea.  It's listed as a natural antihistamine.  Long term, I would try diet moderation.  Check around the board.  Topics relating to dairy, soy, wheat, SLS, etc.

My husband and brother are really helped by 3 things-

-1000 mg of vit. C once to 3 times a day,
-bee pollen as a suppliment, (possibly royal jelly, tho we haven't tried that),
-taking alfalfa as a suppliment

I can get back to you more later on recomended dosages, if you want, but we usually go by the info. on the back of the bottle of capped suppliments at the health food store. Let us know if you find something that helps!

Since I've moved to the amazingly dry climate of NM about a year ago I've had sinus problems/congestion almost constantly.  I've tried tons of stuff, unfortunately most of it very inconsistently.  As soon as it starts working I stop taking it.  Roll Eyes

I have recently however found an AMAZING product that totally wiped out a full blown sinus infection I had been having a losing battle with for three months.  It was so bad I was running a low grade fever and was seriously thinking of giving in an going to the Dr. for an antibiotic.  In desperation I went to our local health food store and asked the clerk if they had anything, anything at all that would help.  She pointed me to a product called "Xlear" a Xylitol nasal spray.  It's description says that it is "Soothing & moisturizing."  The ingredients are Purified water, Xylitol, Saline and Grapefruit seed extract.  This stuff works.  Sooooo well.  I used it three times a day for about four days.  The infection was gone and if I use it in the morning it keeps me from getting congested through the course of the day.   WAY better than any traditional over the counter or prescription nose spray I've ever tried before!   Cheesy

Allergies are a result of a dysfunctional immune system.  Ambrotose (a patented glyconutritional product by Mannatech) and Manna-C is what I use as preventative measures for warding off allergies and sinus infections.  Ambrotose is the blend of 8 essential sugars that are REQUIRED and used by the body for proper cell to cell communication.

We have truly experienced optimal health as a result of adding these UNIQUE products to our diet three years ago for our family of 9!  Manna-C is composed of Ambrotose, an herbal blend and a natural source of vitamin C.  It is designed to support nasal and sinus health by nutritionally supporting the body's natural ability to regulate histamine.  It's safe and effective to take daily!

Steph recommended the Xlear nasal spray which has a derivative of one of the 8 essential sugars -xylose - in the form of xylitol.  I'm so glad she experienced great results with that product!  Trust you will get the results you are looking for in a nutritional route!  Allergies can be so annoying!  If you would like to order, please contact us.  We'll help you set up your own wholesale account with Mannatech, and they will ship your products directly to your home.  We're here to help!

Our two oldest tikes are having trouble with seasonal allergies.  I'm absolutely sure God has a remedy out there for them...He's healed our 5 y.o. son of acute bronchitis already.  So now we are down to this.  Our son gets itchy eyes that swell on the outside and inside (the clear coating on the eyeball), then he gets all stuffy and has to blow his nose a Lot especially at night.

Our 9 y.o. daughter also has the seasonal allergies.  She gets the itchy eyes that don't swell as much (I think she's taught herself not to scratch so much).  But her throat itches, too.  And she says her throat throbs.  I've looked in there and a little ball at either side of her throat are swollen (I'm not sure if its her sinuses, tonsils or adenoids...I'm not familiar with these parts).  I also suspect that she doesn't have a lot of trouble with nasal stuffiness anymore b/c she's learned to keep herself propped up on pillows when she sleeps, if she's having drainage problems.  We went to our annual hmschl field day activities this year (the kids participate in all kinds of outdoor sporting activities...lots of grass).  We had to come home early b/c she got so itchy and began to get hives on the back of her neck.  (By the way we live in Mississippi, too...lots of all the seasonal triggers everywhere!)

Now to my question...Will you suggest some natural remedies for this or at least a way that I can keep them more comfortable with these things flare up?  I'm really trying to avoid Benedryl and all these pharmaceutical meds.  I've started all my kids on spirulina.  I've read that its supposed to help allergies over a period of time.  Any help will be welcomed.

Thanks,
Sanya

Try taking green barley or barley greens- I think one is supposed to be better than the other....  Huh  My friend has a zoo in her house with an African Grey, cockateels, and a parrot, also 4 dogs.  Her house is very small.  She was taking around 9 a day and doing fine.  A couple of months ago she got an air purifier and has been able to cut back on the barley green- I think she is down to 6 a day.   I might be wrong on the amounts, but basically you would just start taking a couple a day and then work up to the amount that works for you.

Locally produced raw honey and local fresh raw milk are great for reducing seasonal allergies, although they can be hard to find.  Ask around and eventually you will probably come up with something, especially if you live near a farm/farmers' market.  I have found that feed supply stores seem to know who keeps different types of animals and often for what purposes, too so it may be a good starting place.             ~L

I’ve used Phytofed from Wonder Laboratories

Despite the name it is homeopathic.  It seems to work well.
Hope this helps.   I hope I'm not double posting.

I'm back.  I was blessed to stumble upon a solution, I think.   Undecided  I live 30 minutes from the nearest store so I couldn't run out and buy any of the recommendations that I'm sure would have worked great...and I was getting desperate for all the itchies to stop!!  I gave both of my kids vit C (btwn 500 and 1000mg) and spirulina (1/2 - 1 whole tablet) at the same time.  It seemed to stop allergic symptoms within minutes.  I've only had a chance to do this about 3 days...so I'm not sure if it worked of if it was just time for the itchies to stop anyway.  It's been raining the past 2 days so I don't think we'd have any seasonal allergy problems anyway i.e. they haven't had any itchies.  I'll let you know if this is really working once things get dry and polleney (OK, I made another word up. Grin)  I hope it doesn't sound like I want the problems back again...I really would rather them not have allergies of any type.  Smiley

Hi.  I know nothing about allergies and am not sure where to post it on this board.  My dh has been having some mild, but annoying problems with allergies in the Spring time for the last 2 years.  It seems to be environmental, possible pollen, since it's that time of year.
Any suggestions?  Does anything in the store here help with that?  Or any good sites to help me figure out what to do that might help him?   He's been having watery eyes & a stuffy nose.
Thanks.  Holly

My dh has always struggled with allergies during this season of the year.  Pollen really gets to him.  He works outdoors a lot, so it is really a problem.  He has started taking Clariton when he is going to be outdoors.  That is practically the only medicine he will take.  He would so much rather take natural, but this is the only thing he has found that he can feel a difference with.  Any other suggestions.

I am not only looking for alternative herbs, but any lifestyle changes or anything that could possibility help reduce the allergys.  Our diet is not perfect, but we don't eat anything like the SAD diet, most of the time.  (except for the McDonald's $1 menu when we aren't at home....., but that would onlt be 1-3 times a month)

I have read that consuming raw locally produced honey can help keep pollen/outdoors allergies at bay.  Also, chamomile tea seems to act like an antihistimine from my research.

Yes!!!  I've heard the same thing about local honey!  My father in law has done this for several years - he eats a tablespoon of the most local honey he can find every day.  He stopped taking prescription allergy meds altogether after this and finds the honey to be much more effective in reducing the annoyances of his allergies.  This is more of a long term solution, and it may take a little while to really take effect, but I am sure it is worth it!

I'm glad to hear that local honey can help allergies!  Thanks for recommending it.  I have a neighbor who makes honey.  (well, actually I think the bees do most of the 'making') Wink  Seriously though, they live right around the corner from us.  I have really bad allergies.  The itchy, swollen eyes and itchy throat.  I cannot count how many times a day I sneeze.  And, Sanya, I feel for your little ones.  It is NO FUN!  I get really frustrated sometimes.
I will try the tablespoon of local raw honey for a week or two and repost on this thread so you all will know if it worked for me.
And, if anyone is interested in buying honey, if you cannot find it locally, I'd be happy to send you some.  I think he has quite a supply.  Just e-mail me.  And, if I haven't posted my results in a week or two, someone please let me know.  Sometimes I get severe 'mommy-brain' and forget.  Does the honey help with that?   Wink

Help.  LAST Sunday night we had a bakeathon thingy and I baked a pie and we went out there and TOTALLY overdosed on sugar.  So, I have been sick ever since.  First it was a throat thing, then noseish and now I have a wicked sinus headache.   Sad  Guess it wasn't worth it ALTHOUGH I did win a blue ribbon for my pie.   Grin First blue I have EVER gotten for anything.  Shocked Anyway, I had some garlic tea and I am taking vit c but the tea I thought it would relieve pressure and cause things to come out but it didn't.  Any suggestions for the headache part?

I do the hot tea thing (holding the tea in my mouth longer than normal drinking) and then hold hot water/wrung out towels against my forehead, eyes/eyebrows, cheek bones & wherever else the sinus pressure is worst. I go as hot as I can tolerate.  Seems to warm up the sinus area with both of these methods, get the gunk moving and relieve the pressure.

Actually this is the only thing I ever do since I've been pregnant/nursing for awhile now.

i feel really bad for him...
he is on zyrtec, which is not helping. i was hoping for some thing natural we could try. if anyone has suggestions, please let me know

Hello.  I hope you get help soon.  I know how painful it can be seeing your child suffer Cry.  My first 2 boys have/had allergies.  After we took whole milk away from my first and ripped up the carpet in the living room we saw dramatic results. He also had a bad case of acid reflux, which this is the main reason we took the milk away, but looking back and knowing what a milk allergy can do to a little one, such as reflux, I belive it was  allergies all along.  My second boy is autistic.  Autism comes with all sorts of food sensitivities. I'm not saying your little one is autistic,  but the food allergy thing is something that  my little one has struggled with and maybe I can help with what I've learned.    I have read lots about the leaky gut syndrome and a lowered immune causing bodies (especially little, already vulnerable ones) to develop an allergy. Most diets are the underlying problem of all allergies.  We have been doing an elimination diet with boy num. 2.  You simply take away a food for 5 days, reintroduce it, and wait for a reaction.  You can be 100% sure by doing the same food twice.  For example,  we did egg yolks a couple of weeks ago.  I only put egg white in all his food.  After 5 days I reintroed yolks and I could see a defanant change in his manner and he felt bad all day.  I again did 5 day yolk free.  I then put yolk in his corn bread and saw the same result.  A diet elimination is more accurate and less painful than the shots are at the allergist.  Not to mension the price!  It is more accurate because you are only taking one thing away and keeping your focus on that food.  The typical food allergies are egg yolks, cows milk, soy, tree nuts, and corn.  Some even have allergies to beef, tomatoes, oranges, and red grapes.  My Noah had a huge reaction to the soy.  Soy is such an overrated food.  It is so highly processed it isn't good for any one to eat!!  One thing to consider is the cause of leaky gut syndrome.  It is the reaction from the inability to break down gluten; protein in wheat, rye, oat, barley and whey, and caisen; proten in dairy.  The body of those with this inability have depleated enzymes caused from a compomised immune system.  Without these enzymes one can't break down the proteins, gluten and caisen.  The only way to take care of this is to also eliminate all forms of wheat and dairy.  It does sound overwhelming,  but I am here to say God will give you knowleged and grace.  I will be happy to help.  Take care. I had my 9 yo son allergy tested on yesterday..He is allergic to every growing thing out doors. Trees, grass, weeds, as well as two kinds of dust mites.. Roll Eyes I have suspected most of this for a long time. My son has never slept well through the night, and he nearly sleeps sitting up in his bed. He also has severe eczema. Of course the doctor did what most doctors do, he prescribed him 5 different medications. I will not be using them, I want to find an alternative to them.. Grin He prescribed nasonex, dioxepin, singulair, patenol, and loratidine. This is all mind boggling..It seems to me that it would be an over kill by far. Any suggestions for a natural alternative would be welcomed. I need to do something aggressive before blooming seasons rolls back around. Thanks so much for any help you give.  Grin

Tanya, I had allergy testing years ago and was basically determined to be allergic to breathing. No, really, I was allergic to all sorts of pollen, dust, molds, mildew, indoor, outdoor, you name it. The Dr. said it was of no use for me to purchase an air filter, because I was allergic to so many things, it wouldn't help unless I never left the room. Then, I asked him a question that stumped him. "Why is it that I have these allergies now when I never had them before? Where did they come from?" He muttered about these things developing in adulthood, but he had no real answers. I had to either find some answers or resign myself to a lifetime of allergy shots and medications.

I no longer have those allergies. I no longer take shots. I don't take decongestants. I changed my diet, removing processed foods, processed sugars and anything with coloring agents, nitrates, nitrites, etc. I started learning how to cook from scratch, and I identified which foods cause me trouble when I consume them regularly. For me, non-fermented milk products and too many baked breads were the culprit. Lots of fresh/frozen vegetables and regular meats were the answer.

I used to get so congested that I could feel the pressure building inside my sinuses like my head would explode. At one point, I no longer remembered what it was like to have an open passage. Now, I don't have to live from one dose to the next, and it is wonderful.

For me, the allergies were a reaction my body was having to too many toxins. When I stopped ingesting so many substances that weren't foods, I eliminated the overload and my immune system could settle down and not overreact to everything in the environment.

Congratulations on being willing to seek out answers. Your little guy is blessed to have such a caring mama like you.

My six year old and I were tested for allergies this morning, too.  We are allergic to cats, dust mites, ragweed, and mold.  I just have sinus problems, but it had developed into asthma in my dd.  They subscribed a bunch of medicine (Singulair, Xenopen, and an albuterol inhaler along with a steroid shot) and want to begin allergy shots.  I am against allopathic treatments and know they do not offer a cure and end up causing more trouble in the long run.

So now I too am on a quest for a cure.  I have been chanding diet for a while, but have yet to address the dairy issue...we love it in our house and raw/organic is very expensive.  Looks like it is time.

So keep us updated on any breakthroughs or things you come across to help address these issues.

And thanks SC for your testimony.  It is great to know that this can be overcome without drugs.

Our oldest son will get an occassional seasonal reaction. Before we started home schooling, he came home from school one day and the whites of his eyes were all swollen and jelly-like.  It really freaked me out big time!!!  Basically, he rubbed his eyes so much that day at school that he aggravated the whites to the point of swelling.

At any rate, we have found if we allow him only glass of milk in the morning, he sails through the 'allergy' season (which for him is actually 2x a year) just fine.  No other changes in diet are necessary with him.  (Well, some changes are probably necessary for optimal health...and we're learning...but for his allergies...just cutting out the milk overload was enough to do the trick).  That boy would drink a gallon a day if we let him!!

Keep up the good work on looking for a natural cure!
