This red font is the updated info.

After much research I find this tree to be a hawthorn tree. I do not know which variety of hawthorn it is tho. But it is amazing to discover the wonderful medicinal qualities of hawthorn berries.

The rest of this post below is the original post.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm thinking these are either crabapple or hawthorn berries?

Anyone know what they are?

It is a tree with thorns. Pictures were taken this month ( august 2008)

Do you have any close pics of the thorns? If I remember right, hawthorn has some pretty scarey looking thorns on it.

Here's a picture I found while on a search.
I just remember it's a tree that shrikes like to impale their victims on.

I took some pics of the thorns today but cant post them till hubby gets them out of the camera for me.

There were like maybe 2-3 inch long thorns growing on the trunk and limbs. But Im still having trouble telling if it is hawthorn or crabapple since they look a like in the pics online. I read somewhere that crabapples also have thorns so I'm kind of confused.

OK more pics. I dont know why this tree has spots on its leaves. It is an old tree. The younger trees like this one dont seem to have spots.

Is this a hawthorn tree?

Well hog dog and marshmallows! Finally the ID of this tree is ID'd! LOL.

I figured yall were correct about it being a hawthorn but since I will be eating those berries and giving them to others to eat I wanted  to be extra sure.

I don't know which kind of hawthorn this is but I do know I can use the berries safely.

The research I found on hawthorn berries is amazing. They are wonderful for cardiovascular health. Something I could use since heart desease runs in both sides of my family.

Thanks for the pix and discussion, BJ.   Smiley

I just saw a tree like this in our area, and was able to ID it as hawthorn.  Those thorns sure are amazing!   Shocked

Yopper- were the hawthorn berries you saw red and ripe yet?

The berries in the above pics are all gone now, I'm trying to dry the ones I was able to pick. But some of the other hawthorn trees around here still have hard green berries. I'm not sure how many varieties of hawthorn there is.

An interesting tid bit about hawthorns:

It has always been rumored that it was the thorns of a hawthorn tree used to make the crown of thorns that they painfully put on Jesus head  and the dog wood is said to be the wood the cross was made of.

They were seen on 9/6...we're in Zone 4, and if I recall correctly, they were similar to the ones you photographed...a mottled reddish-orange/yellow.  Everything's been peaking about 2 weeks later than usual here this summer.

I've heard that about hawthorn and dogwood, too.  Smiley  Neat legends...but those thorns would HURT.   Cry

Can the hawthorn berry leaves also be used?

If so how and for what?

I have been using the hawthorn berries for hearthealth but if I can also use the leaves that would be cool also.

I'm pretty sure the answer to my question is "YES" but here it goes:

Can any and all types of hawthorn berries be used medicinally?  Is one type better than others?

And now for a question that I don't know the answer to:

When do you pick them?  When they are red?  Any suggestions on the best way to dry them?

(We have SO MANY trees around here that I feel obliged to harvest them!)

Pick them in late summer early fall when they are no longer real hard. They will be a redish color.

I dried mine on newspaper for a month probably. This year I'd like to dry them in a food dehydrater.

After I dried them I saw some kind of maggot crawing out of them. The creature must have lived inside them when we picked them.
