Patterns don't bug me much, but Dumbo's dream sequence has always bothered me a lot.  Also Winnie the Pooh's hephalump (sp?) dream sequence and in Beauty and the Beast, the "Be Our Guest" song.
Anyone else creeped out by those?

I guess it is my turn to jump right in here.  Smiley I have always been creeped out by feet.  Toes mainly.  My husband and children tease me terribly.  The thought of toes wiggling will give me the same sensation as dragging nails across a chalkboard.  My oldest daughter thinks feet are cute... Huh...and does not understand this in me at all.  She thought that I needed someone (her) to constantly put their feet on me so that I would get over it.  It didn't work.  I couldn't take it.  I can still feel the hair on my neck standing up.  The only time I loved feet was when my babies were little.  As soon as they hit about 5 years of age, it was over.  I always remember feeling this way, even as a child.

My husband cannot touch a paper napkin or paper towel.  If he does, he grabs his eyes.  He says he gets the sensation that someone is trying to rub the paper towel under his eyelids.  His eyes get very red and tear up at the sight of one.  Sometimes our wrestling matches end up with him wiggling his toes and me dancing with paper towels.  The kids really get a kick out of it.  Tongue

Yes, Dumbo and also Pinnochio scared me very, very much as a child.  You are not alone, and if you are a freak at least you aren't alone  Cheesy  I will not let my kids watch most "children's" programming for the very reason that those movies gave me serious nightmares as a kid.

I've always had a vivid imagination, and can see scarey faces in certain patterns. When I was younger I was too scared to look at certain wallpapers, knot holes in hardwood walls and ceilings, etc. I thought I'd gorw out of it, but I still see creepy faces in my lacey curtains, my mother-in-law's wedding dress I have hanging up as decoration, and other similar things. It doesn't scare me like it used to, but makes me feel like I'm weird. I've wondered if it's spiritual, and when scared have always cried out to Jesus.

I had the same problem as a child.  I would lay awake at night and see faces in the curtain ruffles.  There was just enough light from outside for me to see them, and to cast shadows.  I would also see scary faces in the clouds, wallpaper, all sorts of things.  I never knew anyone else had the same problem!  I still can see faces in things, but they no longer scare me.  If I see one now, I just use it as a trigger to pray.   Smiley

Yes! I've always been bothered by these (especially the heffalump dream). I still don't watch that part of any movie. I hated the "dream" in 'Fiddler on the Roof', too.

Oh my gosh, this was so interesting to read!  My husband calls me "Monk" because of my quirks....as in the OCD detective on the tv show, 'Monk.'...  I also have to make up the bed, anybody in it or not, if there is so much as a wrinkle or the sheets aren't lined up exactly parallel....

This is all very interesting... so much so that I hope I don't develop those phobias myself.  I have to admit, visualizing some of them kind of made me uncomfortable.   I have a terrible reaction to moisture.  I think that seems pretty much out in left field.  I don't like moist things or things that appear wet to me.  I have a horrible reaction to slugs.  I am complelled to try to kill them with salt and one time a slug got in my house and I wanted to move.  I had a baby slug on my nose once - YIKES!  I know that sounds absurd but I can't hardly go outside at night.  Except, sometimes I have to go out slug hunting with a big thing of salt and that drives my husband crazy.  I actually pay my oldest son and his friend per slug for each one they get rid of for me.  My husband thinks he can fix it by making me sit next to him on the porch at night and I do it because he tells me to but I am just freaking out inside.  I am constantly looking around me and afraid they will get on me.  This has really just come about in the past 5 or 6 years.  I suppose I was always a little like this but it wasn't a big deal when I was younger.  For instance, my husband asked me if I would let a slug crawl across my face for a million dollars, no question - couldn't do it.  I reason that God just must not want me to have the money if that is hte only way I could get it.  I also like my husband to dry every inch of his body really well after a shower before he touches me.  That is sometimes a problem.  So, moisture is my thing.  I just can't stand it and I wish I could make it go away.  Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed

Wow!!! This was EXtremely interesting to me. For the most part I don't have any of these phobias at all. But, after reading the first few replies about patterns freaking people out, I just thought I'd throw my .02 in, because I'm actually drawn to patterns like that. I love the sight of honeycombs and other things like that. They just interest me and I love to stare at them.....weird eh? Kind of the opposite side of the spectrum. Oh, and there's actually a movie about this. I don't remember the name of it, but it's really old and stars Gregory Peck. He's afraid of black and white patterns.... His was because of a childhood trauma they figured out later. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I DO NOT like the "fantasia" "dumbo" and other such movies with the weird dream sequences. Those are highly annoying to me.
I did have dreams as a child of something like rocks starting out small and moving toward me they would shift into bigger and bigger boulders. I haven't had that dream in forever, but it used to plague me. I actually mentioned it to my brother a while back and he said he thinks he had the exact same dream  Huh I kind of associate it with spiritual problems in our house...
I can't stand looking in mirrors when it's dark or very dimly lit. Some "wonderful friend" of mine told me the "bloody mary" chant thing... *shudder* and since then I just hate looking in darkened mirrors. I force myself sometimes, but always expect to see the devil or something else horrible. Also can't stand having someone breathing right in my mix. I get that feeling of not being able to breath. I always thought I was just being a jerk to my dh, but after reading other posts here, maybe it's actually a fear I have. I eventually have to pull away and breath very very deeply.
Ok, there's my list  Grin

I have that same issue, I can't stand sleeping face to face with my husband because I feel like I can't breathe and feel the need to turn away and take a deep breath.  Another thing I can't stand is the cotton that comes inside medicine bottles, the sound it makes causes my teeth to hurt.  I usually make DH take it out of the bottle.  I also like to have similar colors together.  Like when I put the dishes away all the blue cups have to go together etc.

I don't remember that dream being as much scary to me as being irritating. It was like I was semi-conscious and couldn't get past the dream to go to sleep sleep, but also couldn't wake up easily. And when I did wake up, I knew when I closed my eyes the "rocks" or whatever it was were going to come bother me again. It was more unsettling than anything.....
Other than that though it sounds very similar to what I had. Strange!
I also remember having one when we were staying at my grandmother's house that had these weird ape people in it.... something like planet of the apes, although I don't think I'd seen that movie (I was like 4). The dream scared me badly (obviously since I still remember it 21 years later) and when I woke up it was because my Dad was shaking me. I guess I was screaming or writhing or something in my sleep. BUT>>> for some reason my mind interposed the face of one of the ape things on my Dad, so when I opened my eyes I FREAKED.... one of the ape things was shaking me and talking to me with my Dad's voice!!! He finally got me to snap out of it, but that one scared the beheemies out of me!!!

Me too, Nexis! I actually like patterns like that. What bothers me are patterns that are messed up, however slightly. If a pattern has unexpected things in it, it needs to be BALANCED by the EXACT SAME deviation on the corresponding side. I have always been one to line things up and make perfect patterns. My 6yo is the same way.

Along the same lines, my biggest horror throughout childhood (and even now, I hate to admit) was seeing a distorted reflection, most especially in the tiled walls of a shower/tub. And if the shower was darkened (by a dark curtain or poor light in the bathroom), it was intolerable. I developed a fear of the shower head, and even worse, of the reflection of the shower head in the wall it was attached to, the wall next to it, and also the opposite wall. To this day, I will go to the trouble to wash my long hair in a hotel room sink if I don't feel comfortable with the shower reflection/lighting situation.

I also can't look in mirrors in the dark. I'm sure that's related to the above, as well as something a friend of mine told me in high school about a friend of a friend who knew someone who was sucked into a dark mirror by demons or something like that ... I don't fear that happening to me, because I am a child of God, but can't shake the feeling I get from it.

The paper towel thing is also a huge issue for me, as well as sandpaper (eek!) and anything dry and scrapey on my skin.

Slugs! Oh! I completely understand that one! In the summer, they were hiding in my cabbages and covering the whole inside of the compost bin. I had to ask my son to carry out the compost each day. Ack!

I could go on, but you get the idea. My husband is sure I'm an Aspie, but why bother getting diagnosed? I don't spend a lot of time thinking about this and more or less instinctively avoid the things that bother me. As a teenager, I was controlled by these fears, but as an adult, I know how to stay away from the triggers.

I've only ever told my husband and kids (oh, and the DAN doctor :-) ) about these things before.

Very, very interesting Linguist.... I'm glad to know someone else LIKES the pattern thing. I don't really like them to be out of order either, but it's not something that truly bother-bothers me.
I can also be a little weird about shower things. Distorted images don't really bother me so much, but I like there to be a LOT of light in the shower (or anywhere for that matter). I remember our first house had only one bathroom and no window in it at all. My shower curtain was dark green and the only light was on the other end of the room and was just one of those over the vanity lights. Pretty much NO light came through to the shower. I promptly got a clear shower curtain!! Even now at our new house we have shower doors. They are  that clouded glass stuff or whatever, but I hate to take a bath in the tub, because the doors of course only move halfway over, so you only get half a tub of decent light.

I scanned some of this, I've had a few rambling thoughts:

Some of what is talked about could be adrenal stress, big time.  When your endocrine system goes on overload, sensitivity to light is a symptom.  Well, some of these symptoms look like sensitivity to pattern, light, etc.

As to the movies, I personally believe that may be spiritual in nature.  I'll not say more, though, because I'd get creepy  Smiley.  I threw out one or two of the movies mentioned in this thread, and one of them I knew not to watch because of the sensitivity I would have, spiritually, to them.

I can't go into movie rental places.  The bad images are enough to really alter my emotions.  I don't consider that, again, a physical thing.

I have had the creeps in a crowded room.  I go on overload and start acting weird.  That did not start until my adrenal issues started, so that is why I am wondering if some of these phobias might be adrenal overload related.  But I tend to agree that toxic overload could be a culprit, also.  Vitamin B deficiencies are also related to some mental issues, as well.  And then there's the fatty acids issue that is related, possibly.

We Americans go way too fast for way too long.  We don't know how to truly "rest" in silence.  Our kids are uncomfortable with it, too.  I wonder if we don't all just over load our bodies with too many things that are seen and heard, thereby causing spillovers like what is spoken about here.  Some of these things may be our bodies' way of calling out for some quiet, some sensory rest.   Undecided

Okay, I really don't have this problem. No "true" phobias that I can think of at the moment. But I was reading cecac's comment about how we as human beings don't really take the time to truly rest and getting overloaded.

On that train of thought, I thought I'd mention this link:

http://www.essentialfloatation.com/Daily-Express.htm

It's called floatation therapy, and it's supposed to be extremely relaxing. I have no idea if it's good or bad or even helpful; I've never tried it myself. It just struck me as a possible "therapy" for someone who was struggling with some of these things. Any thoughts?

Maybe this is just a coincidence, but when I was a kid we saw Fantasia and my friend threw up right after one of the weird dreamy parts.

My son who gets carsick and such threw up after watching Alice in Wonderland and all the strange things in it.  My kids all acted rather disturbed after that movie in general, but my sensitive guy actually threw up.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.  Think of car sick, motion sick, light and image sick - must be related to some sort of visual and brain thing.  Ick.

I, too, hate the heffalump part of Pooh.  I even dislike the dreamy stuff in musicals like Singing in the Rain - all that "modern opera and modern dance" stuff.

What on earth are we doing to ourselves?Huh?

Welllll...I don't have any phobias, really.  But I do have a fear of bumper cars.  Yep.  Bumper cars.  Because of a bad experience on them when I was really little.  It's the only time I've ever ridden them, and despite the fact that I'm, oh, 26 or so years older now, I have a hard time watching people ride them.  And I would have a really hard time getting on one again.

And, when I was little I saw a movie on TV that made me afraid of mirrors for quite a while.  I don't have that fear anymore, but I remember being really scared to look in one.  And it's not like my parents knowingly exposed me to horrible movies.  I think this one was on the Disney channel or something harmless like that.  Which may be partly why I'm so cautious to screen movies before our daughters watch; you never can tell.

And, I also see faces in carpets, curtains, fabric patterns, shower heads...  But, for me they're always harmless or funny faces.  And I always study them carefully, wondering if I could draw them.  And I'm often disappointed if I look away for a while, and then try to find the face again, and can't find it.  They're always so interesting.

I can't think of any phobias I have that are on a level with some of those mentioned here... but I know there are certain things that really bother me. Like, I can't sleep with the blankets up close around my face (although my neck is okay) because I feel like I'm going to suffocate. I especially feel that way if I'm breathing "used air", like my face is very close to my husband's when we're going to sleep.

There are certain noises that people make while eating that drive me CRAZY. They make me feel unreasonably angry and emotional. (The funny thing is that usually it doesn't bother me unless it is a family member.) Like slurping a drink or hot soup. Or (this is a huge one) crunching quickly through a bunch of chips.

It also bothers me if I'm trying to watch a movie and I cannot hear the sound clearly, either because of the volume or because people are making too much noise. Perhaps this is a "being task-oriented, not people-oriented" issue because I feel irritated that they are preventing me from hearing the sound.

That's about all I can think of for the time being.

This is such a great post!!! I'm not alone!!!!  Cheesy
Believe it or not I'm afraid of the dark!!!  Shocked
I always have been! When my husband and I were first married it would drive him crazy at night to have a light on in the room. He's since gotten used to it. And I've gotten better since. But he works nights and when he is not home I sleep with a light on still.
I've been like this ever since I can remember. I can picture things in the shadows just like some of the posts said they can picture things in lace. It frightens me to no end. I sleep better during the day. I don't even like looking out the window at night.
We just had our first baby and I really don't want this to rub off on my children. Does anyone know how to fix this before my little on is old enough to be scared also? How do I teach a child to not be afraid when I am myself?
Growing up I used to be terrified of storms also. But just at night. During the day I loved them. But at night I would throw my covers over my head and scream until my parents came and got me. Even up until I was like 12 or 13. I'm better now but my nights are worse when it is storming out.
Sometimes I just sit there under my covers now and cry out to Jesus when I'm really scared. I've tried to turn off the light this past week when my husband is at work to try to battle this. Sometimes I can sleep and sometimes I can't.
Any ideas?

My therapist suggested the following for healing....

Go to a room by yourself where there are no distractions. Sit down, and peacefully, try to remember a recent situation where you felt that fear, almost relive it. (This exercise should last only 20 minutes)  Then, give God permission to release memories from your mind. Ask him to "shed his light and his truth". You must give him permission, and you must not "think". Don't try to "remember" stuff, God has to be the one to bring it up. Try to imagine a blank wall. Somehere in your past, probably when you were a child, you had a bad experience, so much so that perhaps you blocked it out. The Lord may give you just one memory or he may give you ten. The trick is to be patient. When you start to receive the memories, and they might be bad memories, say thank you Lord, thank you. Even if the memories make you cry, still "thank you Lord". Then, ask Him to replace the "lie" with His "truth" and ask him to heal you.

Try this ... let me know if you have questions.

this has been a great thread, to know that we are not alone Smiley

Certain patterns, tv shows/commericials with wild and flashy patterns or writing, can throw me into a anxiety attack.

I don't think its (my problem) a technical phobia, because over the past few years, I noticed that I get overstimulated really easy. Even as a young child, if I got overstimulated, I just wanted to sleep or cry and just be left alone. Personally, I'd rather be at home than out anywhere, but at the same time that makes it hard to make new friends Sad Its tough when you have 5 children running around, and I just want to yell "STOP! BE QUIET!!!" at the slightest sound.

I have a huge aversion to "social" situations and calling folks on the phone (even family and friends, but I am ok when they call me) It drives hubby batty, because if I can have him make a call, I will make him LOL. The mention of Asperger's makes me want to look into it more, as my oldest son seems to have some issues too. I have read a little about it, and I look at the symptoms, and its like "a-ha! that's it!" but I try to caution myself not to diagnose myself, since several ailments/symptoms could be pointing at other directions  Roll Eyes

I LOVE patterns...they are so rational to me.  When I put my dishes in the cabinets, everything has to be facing the same direction and exactly the same distance apart.  If I see a pattern that attracts my attention, I have to forcibly keep it out of my mind or I will spend hours repeating it in my head.

As far as phobias are concerned, belly buttons almost make me panic.  Mine actually hurts to touch...I tell my husband it feels like something was dropped in there when they tied off my umbilical cord as a baby...like a needle.  I have actually thrown up before when my husand was teasing me and kept messing with it.  I never minded taking care of my babies cords before they fell off but once gone, I just avoid looking at their belly buttons.

I have to look away from flashing lights...whether from an emergency vehicle or the sun through trees driving down the road.

Someone mentioned noises while eating...I can't stand that either.  It makes me feel like I'm going to cry...weird, I know.
