I am on it, wouldnt go without!!!   my doctor put me on, I think you can be careful if you self diagnos but I love it, it makes my hormones balanced and hopefully in a couple of months will make that i can be pregnant again, I have had 3 miscarrieges because of low progestrone i think, I know if you are low it is perfect to use at least the first 3 months, but after that I dont know.  when women have luteal phase defect (not enough progestrone)  OBs  usually put them on progestrone suppositories, but my doc is giving me the natuaral compounded formula that is a cream. much healthier and much nicer to use, Smiley

I feel a little silly asking this since so many people have mentioned this, but what is progesterone cream, and what exactly is it used for?  I've never heard of this before.

Is there one progesterone cream that is better than another?  Prescription or over the counter?  Some folks say wild yam won't do anything for you, some say it has to have actual "progesterone" on the label.  My blood progesterone test was normal, but by all symptoms I have low progesterone.  I've been taking extra B6 for several months, but so far haven't noticed any difference in my symptoms.  I'm thinking to try a progesterone cream, but am wary because of all the differences in opinions.  I've also read Dr. John Lee's book.  I did try Arbonne's cream last winter and didn't notice any difference with that, except maybe more painful cycles.  I think I only used it about 3-4 months though.  Maybe that's not long enough to notice a real difference? More pain could also just be coincidence since sometimes that happens anyway.   If anyone who is using progesterone cream could share their experiences, I'd appreciate it!

I used natural progesterone cream by Rexell bout at walmart.. i think it was titled "menopause formula"  I used it because after i ovulated my progesterone wasnt working right and my temps would go back down and i coudln't conceive.  The first month of taking the cream, my temps shot up and stayed up and i ended up conceiving my 12 month old.  Pregnancy symptoms intensified with it and I believe it really worked..

Progesterone cream is supposed to be really great for pregnancy.  According to a tape I have by Dr. John Lee, it's great to use throughout the entire pregnancy.   During the first 3 months it can help prevent miscarriages.  There are progesterone creams out there that are not as effective as others.  Dr. Lee suggests buying one that has 480 mg of progesterone per ounce.  I've purchased mine at vitamin world "Progesterone Cream Menopause Formula" (of course you don't have to be experiencing menopause to use it!!) when they have their buy one get one free sale.  They may even have those sales on line. And, I highly recommend any of you young ladies to read Dr. Lee's book about premenopause - very informative if you're looking for info on progesterone cream.

After my last baby my hormones whigged out really bad.  It took me 4yrs to find progesterone cream and I'm not sure who was happier, me or my husband.   I know a lot of ladies using it and half are using prescription (natural) and the other half using OTC.  The one brand I know that is a good OTC is Natures Sunshine Wild Yam cream.  I know two people who used it for birth control.  I have another friend who had 4 pregnancies with preterm labor and bedrest for all four.  With the 5th she used the cream and had no trouble with preterm labor or bedrest until she stopped using it a few weeks ago.  Now she's having preterm labor again.   Embarrassed  It can be used throughout pregnancy but I would be really hesitant to suggest that to someone unless they are being followed by a practioner of some sort that understands progesterone cream, dosages, etc.  But in general, can't recommend it highly enough!  One of my natural docs says that PMS is NOT normal and is almost always the result of low progesterone.  I have no trouble with that now and I've been on it for just over a year.  Grin

patti - when you say two friends are 'using it for birth control' - do you mean that the progesterone cream suppresses ovulation so that an egg is not released OR that the cream thins the lining of the uterus so that implantation does not occur. Huh?

After a ton of research on natural progesterone cream, I thought it'd be interesting to try it for BC when the need arose, but I'd never heard of anyone actually doing it.

As for how it works, the presence of high progesterone level tells the body that it has already ovulated, and doesn't need to again. Progesterone is actually required to sustain early pregnancy, and we recommend to to numerous moms who are threatening to miscarry. From all of my research, I don't believe that natural progesterone cream causes rejection of the already-fertilized egg.

If you're going to use progesterone cream, I would strongly recommend finding a high-quality natural source. I got mine mail-order from Nutri-Choice (W 1683 Starks Rd Unity , WI 54488; 715-223-3941).

Hi Bethany,

Progesterone cream suppresses ovulation because your body thinks it's pregnant already.  I can understand your concern about implantation.  It's still a baby even prior to implantation as far as I'm concerned.

Just a heads up.  This one contains chamomile extract.  I'm allergic to chamomile and although it's a rare allergy, if you have pollen allergies (ragweed, etc), you may have a problem with this as well.

Hello, I recently had my hormones tested.  The tests came back with low progesterone.  My GP who is very alternative had suggested for me to take pregnenolone  which is a precurser to hormones.  Something to look into..... That has helped me a lot.  Using the progesterone cream has also helped me tremendously.  I use Arbonne Hormone Balancing Cream Prolief which has 20 mg USP. This can be used 1 or twice a day depending on the person's needs.   I have had to adjust the days a take it since I have a short cycle.  I apply the cream in the evening starting on the 7th day to the 26th day of my cycle.  This has worked very well for me.  I feel more balanced with my emotions, I crave less foods.  Bottom line is I like myself much more.  I know many people who have had great success with this cream.  Please feel free to email me if you need more info.

Does this give anyone headaches? I took some today and about an hour later I started getting the worse headache....and as the day went on it got worse and worse and felt just like those bad headaches migraine type right before my period...which is more than a couple weeks away...I am wondering if this is a sign of taking too much cream? Anyone know?Huh Thanks! Beth in Idaho

Bump you up....as far as I know the progestrone cream should be used after ovulation. Like from after your temp goes up until you get your period. Are you using it on the right days?  Can anyone else help her?

This is a great article on progesterone cream.  It definitely needs to be used with caution.  I have been having pretty bad headaches the past 2 weeks and I never associated with the cream but I think that is what is cause it.  Read this article if interested...http://heartspring.net/progesterone_cream.html

I just started using this same brand, but it has not given me headaches. I'm very careful about not using too much, though. Since I haven't had my hormone levels tested, I use even less than the directions say, and only in the second half of the "month". It makes sense, though, that too much could bring on a headache. Especially if you get headaches on a cyclical basis.

I find it interesting all the ways ladies are using the progesterone cream.  My prescription from my doc is natural wild yam cream and I use it on days 15-29 of my cycle.  As soon as my cycle starts I stop using it for 7 days.  I'm thinking it's not a good thing to be fooling around with when and how long you take it.  This would cause all kinds of physical symptoms.  I got no headaches when I started using the cream but when I stopped for awhile to take another saliva test, oh my gosh!  The headaches were severe for about a week.  Eeeks.

Hope this helps.

One of the effects of progesterone during pregnancy is to prevent uterine contractions, one of the things that are known to "start" labor is the natural drop in progesterone at the end of pregnancy. I wouldn't recommend using it for birth control because ovulation can still occur while using the cream, so, if a pregnancy occurs you may never know it and stop the creme to have your period and possibly cause the pregnancy to end with the sudden drop in progesterone. I use the cream and love it for hormone balancing, but, I'm very careful to use a back up method of B.C. when needed.

HTH,

One of the chemical forms of BC available is an all progesterone pill.  It works by supressing ovulation because it is taken all the time with no stop for one's cycle.  It's the same principle when using progesterone cream over the ovaries for BC.  You have to use it everyday with no stop for a cycle in order to prevent ovulation.  Ovulation will only happen if the cream is stopped at anytime.  For ladies who use it for hormone balance and not BC it would not be used over the ovaries and it should be used from days 15-28 (or 29 or 30 - whatever your normal cycle length is).  This method for hormone balance will NOT prevent ovulation or pregnancy and one should use backup BC if desired.

Hope this clarifies.

If you use this stuff, how do you know if it's working?  I made the stuff with the wild yam root and I have no idea how to measure the results of my efforts.  Any ideas?  I put some one yesterday and today and I don't notice anything.  Am I supposed to?  Does it take longer?

I was supposed to start my cycle today and I'm having ovary twinges (ovulating I think) instead.  I shouldn't be having ovary pains for another 10 days according to my normal schedule.  I'm on day 8 of my progesterone cream (wild yam).  Do you suppose that the cream has changed (sped up) my cycle, or do you think that the cyst is just flaring up?  Any ideas from those of you with experience using this stuff.  I think it's definately doing something, but it's taken a bit of adjustment.  I had what I thought were PMS mood swings on Monday and a bit more severe than usual.  I've learned to better control my mood swings over the years but on Monday, they came a bit by surprise.  Just not sure, but any input would be appreciated while I get it all figured out.

Hi HB,

When I started progesterone cream I noticed a difference within 24 - 48hrs.  Keep in mind though that I am using a cream formulated for exactly how much progesterone I need (I was very very low).  I am not a big fan of OTC or homemade progesterones because you have no way of dosing how much progest. you're actually getting.  One thing about progesterone is that the symptoms of low progest. are also the same as if it's too high.  So that makes it lovely, doesn't it?  The best way to tell is if you're having PMS type symptoms and  you just started using it you're probably not getting enough.  Also, you CANNOT start progesterone cream in the middle of a cycle.  It will screw things up.  You really need to start on Day 15 of your cycle (days 1-7 being your period).  The only time it's okay to start in the middle of a cycle is if one is really irregular.  In which case the body will go through a month or so of adjustment.  I highly recommend you go off the cream until you start your period.  On day 15 you can start the cream and use it until day 28 (or 29 or 30 - however long your normal cycle is).

IFFFFF you're using it for birth control you still need to wait until day 1 of your cycle and then just continue using it twice daily (AM and PM) over your ovaries for ALL days of your cycle.  Do not take a 7 day break for your period or it will not suppress ovulation.  I believe it takes several months of daily use to suppress ovulation.

Hope this helps.

Ah!  Cute, SC.   Grin  My husband got a kick out of that.  I really enjoy learning this stuff.  Just wish I didn't have to do it so personally!  But if it helps others then I'm glad to pass on the info.

Yes, I was going to do a book review and I have the book sitting here next to my computer waiting patiently for me to let you all know what I thought.  It's already after 11:30pm so I won't do it tonight because there is soooo much to say about it.  I promise I will try and get to it by the end of the weekend.  I'll put it under the heading "book review."

You have a good memory!  Smiley
