I have been breastfeeding my baby for a little over a year & have not had a monthly cycle yet.  We would like more children, & wondered if using a natural progesterone cream would help.  Any advice?

The lady I purchase my different things from (like progesterone cream, flax seed oil, evening primrose oil etc.) told me when I was breastfeeding that the progesterone cream should not be used.  She own's a store in Duluth, MN called  Essence of Health.  http://www.essenceofhealthduluth.com/

She is very helpful in answering questions.  I'm sure she wouldn't mind you calling and asking.

This confuses me! I was wondering about this. I was having problems with a bit of depression and my doctor had me start taking the pc 2x per day (am and pm) ON for 3 weeks and then OFF for 1 week. I am breastfeeding and I have not started my cycle back again, so I always take a Pregnancy test BEFORE my week off, just in case I happened to be pregnant, even though I'm not cycling.  I have heard a lot about using PC for sustaining pregnancy if you are prone to miscarriage, and I thought I had read in Dr. Lee's book that PC was good for the baby?? Am I wrong? I am doing it since my doctor (who is very natural type...has never prescribed us antibiotics, promotes herbs, etc.) wanted me to take it. He also has me on B-12/Folic Acid Shots 3x per week. It has all helped tremendously, but I am wondering about why not to use the PC while breastfeeding?
Sorry so long.

Just a warning  that progesterone can COMPLETELY change your cycle. My mom gave me progesterone tablets per instruction of a naturpathic DR  for my PMS symptoms (moodiness) and to get me regular and right from the start I started getting cramps (I had NEVER had cramps before) and they were so bad I would curl up in a ball and stay that way most of the first and second day of my period, and my normal period was pretty heavy the first and second days, and really light the next 4 to 5 days, after taking progesterone I had really heavy bleeding for all but the last day. Finally I begged my mom to let me come off of it and she let me because the cramps were so bad (it worked for the moodiness and timing though lol) and if I can help it I will never touch the stuff again! Everything has returned to normal and with age and RRL tea I was able to conquer the moodiness, the only thing that stayed was that I still get cramps not as bad definatley and not as long, but I am still pretty useless on my first day if I haven't been eating properly and haven't been drinking RRL tea.

I would try to find an herbal remedy before taking anything like progesterone. Dr. Christopher has some great ones, and as soon as possible I will buy them, and I am 100% confident they will work.

Any opinions on the Arbonne version of progesterone cream?  It's the one the lady at the HFS recommended when I told her I thought I miscarried because of low progesterone.  It's called Prolief Natural Balancing Cream.  It recommends 1/4 tsp. to 1/2 tsp. per day.  And if I'm understanding right, you don't take it until after ovulations is over, right?  I'm kind of on my own, because my ND told me to take black cohosh for hormone balancing during pregnancy.  Thankfully I know better!

I just wanted to share that when I was trying to get pg a few yrs ago I tried the progesterone cream...it made my whole moods just awful...I cried all the time and just had a awful reaction to it....but since that time....I have found out thru hormone testing I am low on prog. and cortisol My ND put me on a bio identical pill form instead and I gotta tell you it is like night and day....None of the reactions I had before and I feel like it has helped alot this month...so if anyone can not take the cream I just want you to know that a bio identical pill form may help as well.....or better in my case! I never did get pg after my two sons now 20 and 19 but I sure feel alot better taking the pill form and my husband even said...wow what a noticeable difference this month! So after 5 yrs I am starting to feel normal again! Beth in idaho

Hi Morningglory,

Two things - yes, you want to use progesterone from day 15 to day 28 (or however long your normal cycle is - 29, 30, etc).  Once your cycle starts you stop the progesterone again until day 15 again.  If you get pregnant you will want to continue the progesterone throughout your pregnancy and it will likely have to increase a little bit mid-pregnancy to prevent premature labor.  You would stop the progesterone or greatly lower the dose after you've gone full term to allow labor to start.

As for the brand - if you are taking this because you miscarried from low progesterone I would not use OTC progesterone.  You are probably much lower then OTC progesterone could bring you up.  You would be much better finding a doc that will prescribe bio-identical progesterone that is exactly the amount you need.  Otherwise, you may still be too low with the OTC dosing.  If it's not possible to do this then you could start with the OTC and see how you do but keep in the back of your mind that you may need to be tested and given exactly what you need.  I am not a fan of self-precribing progesterone.  It's too delicate of a balance in the body and unfortunately the symptoms of too much progesterone are the same as too little so without testing it you would have no way of knowing where you're at.

I really believe each person's body reacts differently to the different forms of progesterone.  I tried the bio pills and they were awful.  I ran back to the cream as fast as I could.  So I would say you're just going to have to try it and see what happens with your body in particular.  But as the other ladies experience shows, we are all just so different you'll have to see what works for you.

I just had one last thought- since your ND tested you and said you were low, you could try the OTC and have her retest you in 60 days to see if it's brought you up enough.  If not, you could increase a tiny bit at a time and keep retesting every 30-60 days to see if you've hit normal range.  It is very important that you test between days 20 and 23 of your cycle as that is when your progesterone is at it's highest.  That is the number that matters when figuring out how high or low someone is.

I am 33 weeks pregnant and have been using progesterone cream this whole pregnancy.  I have seen conflicting advice on how long to keep using it during pregnancy, some say stop a few weeks before delivery and stay off of it a month, others have said to keep on it up to the day of delivery and then go off for one month, still others have said that you should NOT discontinue it after birth as it could be a factor with post partum depression with the sudden drop of progesterone.  Does anyone have any experience with using it throughout and after pregnancy?

My ND didn't actually test me for progesterone levels.  My midwife did at the beginning of my miscarriage, and she said I was on the low end of normal.  I'm suspecting low progesterone, because I didn't even have a positive pregnancy test until 5 weeks.  I had no pregnancy symptoms at all.  I didn't feel tired, or sick, or anything, except maybe a little weepy.  I also had a really high fever for about a week, and I realize that may have played a part.

BUT I've had two previous pregnancies with no hormone problems at all.  Every time we've tried to conceive, we have with the first try.  I carried my first fullterm; he was fine.  I carried my second to 36 weeks; we lost him to preeclampsia.  We lost our third at 6 weeks due to Huh  We could go get tested for low progesterone, but I'm reluctant to start the endless testing all over again.  Would I have to go to a perintaologist, or could my midwife do the testing?  We're going to try to conceive as soon as possible, and I know testing would throw a wrench ino our plans.

Hi Morningglory,

Your midwife can run a blood test.  The difference between being low or normal will depend on if she uses AMA numbers or naturopathic numbers for what is a good progesterone level.

It's entirely possible to not have your hormones messed up until the 3rd pregnancy.  I know that's how it was for me.  I had two very normal, no hormone problem pregnancies until I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks (2nd trimester) after my second baby.  I was far enough into my pregnancy that it just threw my body for a total whack.  I'm thinking since you lost your baby and there's no real answer as to why (also the recent miscarriage) that it's likely your hormones are all over the place right now.  Both from physical changes and emotional stress.

I would really stress the importance of you taking a *short* break (several months maybe) and really getting your body healthier before getting pregnant again.  I got pregnant 3 mos. after my miscarriage and it was a very difficult pregnancy.  Partly I'm sure because of scarring from a D&C I wish I'd never had and partly because my hormones were still messed up from the previous miscarriage.  Baby was fine and all is well but it's been several years and I'm still healing my body naturally.  Depending on your husbands stand (do what he says), I would encourage you to take a few months, take the progesterone, if you're going to, and give your body a chance to breathe.  I think if we had done this my hub would have allowed us to have more babies because my pregnancy wouldn't have been so difficult.  But only God knows.

Actually, we lost our second one in May, so we waited a full 6 months before trying to conceive again.  I've done several cleanses, gone GF/CF, and several other things.  So I really feel like I had done what I could to correct any underlying problems.  But we still lost the third baby at 6 weeks.  It was very gentle, as far as miscarriages go.  I felt a little tired, but not much else.

I know I should probably get the testing done before we try to conceive again.  I'm assuming that my midwife would probably use AMA guidelines, but I'm not sure what my ND would use.  He doesn't do blood testing, but he's always had me bring him my test results from other doctors.  He mentioned a few herbs he wants to put me on to correct any hormonal imbalances.  Black cohosh (which I won't take) and false unicorn, and a few others I don't remember.  I really do value his input, because he practiced as an MD for a long time, so I feel that he has a veyr balanced view of healing.

I just get so impatient. Undecided  We wanted to have our children close, and now my firstborn will never have a sibling close in age.  I know in my head that one or two months won't make a difference, but I want a baby so badly.  I guess I'll call my midwife next week and see what she says.  DH is a great decision-maker, but he relies on me to do the research.  Big responsibility!

Hi Morningglory,

I remember when you lost your babies and I'm thinking it might be the recent miscarriage that sent your body overboard.  A lot of times it has to do with the adrenals.  The adrenals are the bodies stress gland and your body has had a lot of stress (and emotional too!) this past year.  And because they are connected to the hormone system it throws everything out of whack.  It sounds like you've done a lot of good stuff to fix your body already.

I think if you do an adrenal diet (no sugar, no white flour), the progesterone and take some hormone balancing herbs your body will work itself out.  I used to take my blood test results from my regular MD to my ND too so it sounds like a good idea to take them to your midwife.  Especially if she has experience with progesterone prescribing.

I'm trying to think of specific supplements I took to fix my hormones.  Some of them I think would have be to be web ordered.  I'm not sure.  The one that seems to be the best and covers every gland is called Symplex F.  If that was the only supplement you took I think it would do a lot.  You can take EPO (evening primrose oil) but I'm not sure if you can take that during pregnancy.  Someone else may be able to chime in on that one.  A good multi (supermom is good) and a good probiotic would be worthwhile for healing.  I would chat with your midwife about the progesterone and get her take.  I would highly recommend it but she may be more help with dosing if you're not going to use a bio one.

I so understand wanting your babies close.  All of mine are.  I'm just now getting to a point where my body could probably have another one okay (except my adrenal function) but now my youngest is 6 1/2.   Sad  Too big of a gap for us and my hub is almost 50 so he says he's done.   Cry  I really believe that when the bible says the barren womb is never satisfied that it's not just those who have never had babies but those who are "done" or not having anymore.

God bless,

Just wanted to thank you for all of your input, patti.  I talked to DH last night and told him what you said, and he agreed that we need to wait, and get the progesterone testing done.  Good thing he's so patient; he balances me out.

I believe my underlying problem is autoimmune, which is capable of messing up every system of the body, including the hormones.  I was reading last night how autoimmune disease causes low progesterone and recurrent miscarriage.  As soon as I get my liver flush done, I'll be yeast cleansing for the third time.  I really think I can kick it this time, because I've got some killer herbs and probiotics to help.  That should go a long way towards evening out my hormones.  Once the yeast is gone, I intend to stay very low-carb, no refined foods.  I suppose I ought to go read the adrenal threads.

I just had to chuckle when you said the 6.5 yr gap was too big for you to have more children! Our sons were 15 and 16 when we brought our daughter home at 9.5 months and my husband was 51ish.....I never thought we would have anymore either....yet thru the yrs...he got on board to adopt and we did....He is thrilled that we revisited this area of our life...and it is totally starting over but in a whole new way! It also has helped us stay connected to a *younger* group of parents which is a nice mix too.....There are some days even now at 47 that I think just one more! So I believe you are right...it doesn get less and less but I think most women always long for just one more.....It has been a huge blessing to watch our sons be big brothers to a little sister....they have learned so much and there is such a special bond between them....A big gap is also nice because then you have helpers when you need to run to the store really quick! You can just leave the baby home for that time with very capable loving help!

We know a couple who our sons grew up with....so they are all in college now too....and yet....our daughters are together in a preschool program! They waited and had another one too and are just as thrilled as we are to have gone down that road again! So....we just never know what doors and hearts God will open over time!!!

I do think having helpers would be nice!  Especially after having three so close together.  It was hard when they were tiny, but how easy would it be now with so many little hands to help?!  I think I still hold out hope somewhere in my heart that God will override my hub someday.  Fortunately, he doesn't believe in doing anything permanent.   Grin  Given that, if anything were to happen it would be God alone and he wouldn't argue with that!

momofkings,

I can't give you anything concrete on this.  My thought is you might not want to stop the progesterone but half the dose a week before you're due so your body will go into labor.  If you still don't go into labor you could stop it altogether.  But yes, it isn't good to not have it at all after the birth because of the risk of PPD (especially if you're prone to it - I was).  As soon as you birth you should be able to use it regularly on days 15-28 like normal (you may have to guess on this if you're nursing).  Are you taking it right now to prevent premature labor?   Unfortunately, I wasn't on progesterone during my pregnancies so I don't have a good answer for you.  Do you have a doctor or MD that prescribes it or are you self-prescribing?  You might need to consult with a naturapath on this one.

Thanks Patti,
I am totally self prescribing.  My md does not believe that the natural progesterone is effective, doesn't think it will help or hurt me one way or another.  I had researched after my miscarriages, plus had some bloodwork done and he had even mentioned that it was a little low, but didn't do anything about it.  I have also had an issue with exhausted adrenals and remember reading this was connected with progesterone also.  So, I took it during the last part of my cycles, then got pregnant and basically was afraid to stop.  I was told by someone that I could have a miscarriage if I stopped.  I had originally only planned to take it through the first trimester because I understood that the placenta took over producing progesterone around that time.  But, I just kept using it, like I said, mostly because I had just had 2 miscarriages, and didn't want to risk doing anything on my part that could cause another one.  Then I read all this conflicting advice on line about when to stop and start.  I do not have a history of premature labor.  Do you think if I stopped taking it it would put me into labor?  I had thought I would taper off, I took only a dose in the morning yesterday, instead of morning and evening.  Thanks again for any help from anyone, and for your reply Patti. momofkings,

If your progesterone was low to begin with and you've had miscarriages, then yes, it is likely preventing pre-term labor.  You don't have to have a history of pre-term labor for low progesterone to cause pre-term labor with this one.  Pray, seek God's wisdom and your husband's direction.   I think it's reasonable to taper off when you're within two weeks of your due date.  I would start up again as soon as you give birth based on what your cycles were prior to getting pregnant.  OR, you could wait a few weeks to see what your body does and respond to it accordingly.  Sorry I'm not much help.

I used progesterone cream for two months before getting pregnant with my 3rd.  My OB didn't believe it had anything to do with it either (but we'd been trying for years with no luck)  I know it had everything to do with it. I also had a miscarriage a few years ago, very possibly from low progesterone.
I was told I could stop using it also after the first trimester, but an herbalist I know said I could and probably should stay on it the whole pregnancy; that it certainly wouldn't hurt.  I stayed on it almost the whole 9 months.  I tapered down to using it once a day instead of two during the last month or so, but I was too nervous to just stop using it.  I can't remember exactly now (even though this was just last June!), but I don't believe I used it the last week or two before my dd was born.  If I did, it was just once a day.  Everything was fine.  I plan to use it again when we're ready to try for another baby.  My family doctor already said I'd probably have to go back on it.  I plan to nurse until I'm pregnant again, so I hope it'll be fine to use while nursing.  My doctor seemed to think it would be.  Hope this helps knowing someone else was too afraid to stop using it too!   Wink

I have had my 2 dd early(32 weeks and 35 weeks) and I asked my midwife about taking progesterone and here is what she said:

"I had not heard about the connection between progesterone and preterm labor, but there seems to be one.  I think it would be worth a try for you.  The timing needs to be from the second trimester through 36 or 37 weeks of pregnancy, when it is safe for the baby to be born.  Once you start using it, you must continue, not missing any doses.  A sudden drop in levels (from missing doses) may cause your baby to miscarry.   In fact, some early miscarriages appear to be the result of not enough progesterone, which does help to support the pregnancy.  I would suggest a natural progesterone cream from the health food store, ¼ tsp twice a day applied on your torso, arms or face, but not your legs, and changing locations with each dose.  Many brands are available.  Find one which specifies natural progesterone, not progestin which is a synthetic form.  It should not contain PABA or other herbs.  I believe Emerita brand has a cream which will work.
I don’t think that a blood test for progesterone level is necessary.  Women with low levels usually miscarry by about 16 weeks and you have not done so before.
Other studies from Europe have shown that supplementing omega 3 oils (fish oils) may also help prevent premature labor and birth.  This would be good to add to your diet if you have not already done so. "

Why did she say not to apply it to your legs?  I bought my natural progesterone cream from a compounding pharmacist who makes his own over the counter cream.  They said apply it on the inner legs & the tummy, once a day on each.

Would there be any problems with taking progesterone cream if someone has low estrogen?  My mom has symptoms of low estrogen, and has even talked with her doctor about getting a prescription for estrogen.  She's been taking progesterone cream for a few months.  At first it helped with somethings, but now she's dealing with others.  She's right in the middle of menopause.  I was telling her that if her estrogen was low she could try drinking a little soy milk everyday instead of synthetic hormones.  Also I was thinking that if she's low on estrogen and then adding extra progesterone, wouldn't that be making her symptoms worse???  I'm still learing alot about all of this, so any info would be helpful!  Thanks!

Thanks!

Yes, this could cause problems.  There is a very delicate balance between the two and when one is going through menopause it's even more important to keep the balance or you get worse menopausal symptoms.  The soy is an excellent suggestion.   Menopause is the ONLY time I think it's okay to use soy.  She either needs to bring her estrogen up (naturally preferably) or she should cut back/stop the progesterone.  But it sounds like she needs both so it'd be good if she could do that.

I would research this a bit more.  I'm not sure, but I think it might be able to help.  It might depend on exactly what she's low on.  Progesterone is a trigger that causes one type of estrogen to be converted into another.  So if she's low on one, she may need progesterone to help her body make the conversions.  If she's low on the other type, then she may be converting too much.  It might stand to reason that she needs to supplement both.  Clear as mud??

Here's the names of the estrogens to research.

estrone (E1),
estradiol (E2),
and estriol (E3)

how would i know if i needed to supplement for either of these?  i read the book What your dr. may NOT tell you about premenopause, and it seemed like i needed to supp. but not really sure.

also, if i just felt my ovulation, does that mean all this time i haven't been ovulating?  i have always been a very fertile person, (the if he "sneezes" on me kind) so i would have a hard time thinking i have not been ovulating.  i always think i have increased mucous, but am not good at remembering to stretch it or whatever.  my cycle is considered a bit short at 22-26 days.  i would love for it to be 28, but not sure if there's a good reason to try the progesterone, other than i get sick of having periods what seems like too often!   Tongue

Hello everyone. I have a few questions.

Some background: my sister is having trouble getting pregnant. It looks like she might have low progesterone levels and maybe some thyroid problems. Her basal body temps are usually in 96 degree levels. She has never really had a "normal" cycle. She had one miscarriage and one healthy pregnancy/baby. She is now trying to get pregnant again, and can't seem to ovulate. She was on Provera for like a week, that gave her a "period". She started charting and is already on cycle day 37. It looks like her body is try to ovulate, but for some reason, can't.

So here are my questions:

1: Would it be wise to start using Wild Yam Progesterone Cream?
2: Will it help her get pregnant?
3: Since she doesn't have normal cycles, when should she start using it & when should she stop?
4: Where should she apply the cream? (some suggested the inner thighs, some right on the belly where the ovaries are)
5: While using progesteron cream, should she continue her thyroid capsules (not prescription, just something to help with the thyroid) and her Don Quai (which has chasteberry in it). Will they work together or against each other?

And last of all, any other suggestions??

Thanks so much ladies!
