Yeah... I let it steap for, um, hours... That was also one of the reasons it was so strong.  I forgot about the pot when I went to church, then came home and strained it (I always get a few floaters from the cheesecloth).

Can someone tell me ...you'll know if you take too much or give too much Lobelia, right?   My daughter has croup enough times  to make me think about getting some Lobeila.  The way I understand it, I shouldnt worry about giving her too much, she'll throw up if she gets too much right?

So how much should I start out with ?  1/8-1/4 tsp and if that doesnt help then give her more right?

thanks so much!

The directions on our bottle for a child said 3 drops every 10 minutes until she throws up. We have the tincture though so it is stronger. It took my husband 20 drops (adult dose is 10) before he threw up.

I don't have kids yet so I am not familiar with what croup is but I am assuming it is what it sounds like, so much mucus in the throat lungs and stomach that they have a croupy cough and need to get that mucus out? If so I would use the recommended dosage on the bottle you have, If there is none, and you are using a tincture I would try the dosage I posted above. They can be given the lobelia in juice, or whatever they like, make sure you give them lots of peppermint tea before hand so that their stomach doesn't hurt and get sore.

Not very much mucous, alot of time is a seal barking cough. Her lungs are as clear as a bell, The croup is her upper respertory system is swollen ect. I thought the Lobelia would relax her airways to help breathing?  I will probably have to wait till next time for this one. Thanks

A mixture between lobelia and mullen in a powder form (mixed into a tea) would be really good. My husband gave me this when I had a very bad case of tonsilitis and it cleared up right away.
Right now my DH is coming down with something that has similar symptoms and I have on the stove right now warming until he gets home a tea made out of distilled water (to draw in as many of the nutrients from the herbs and then remove waste products from our bodies) apple cider vinegar, fresh chopped ginger, lime juice (I am out of lemon) and honey. This should really help him, as he has a sore throat and has been out street preaching and witnessing to the sodomites that gather in town for Memorial Day. It will also help him fight the cold or whatever it is.

I just bought a package of Lobelia seeds, but I dont know if they are the "herb" ones or not.  They are an annual, ground covering, trailing plant.  Is this the same as the herb "lobelia" or is it different all together.  There wasnt the Latin name on the package, so I cant go by that, just a picture of mixed colors (purple, white, pink) trailing.

Thanks

I have some lobelia growing in my herb bed.. what parts are used, the leaves, the flowers, the roots, I can't find my "Little Herb Encyclopedia" right now and it is what always tells me which parts of what plants are used.. Great book by the way.. But with my son having some horrible chest congestion and swollen tonsils I am thinking of trying to make a tincture of the lobelia and mullien growing outside..   PRAISES to GOD mullien just showed up this year out of nowhere.. we have never had it before, but now we do.. I looked it up to identify it and was amazed.. came running in to grab my dh and said, hey, hey, this weed out here is mullien and mullien is in my herb books and it is good for all kinds of things including yours and your dad's gout.. LOL   Cheesy
Anyway, would love to know more about what parts of lobelia is used.. mine is struggling but if it doesn't take much I could harvest a few leaves..  Wink

Lobelia Inflata is the medicinal variety. There are MANY hybrids that are for ornamental use only. The best advice I ever read in an herb manual is that if you are going to harvest herbs for your own use only buy seed with latin names. It does make a difference.

Thanks....I usually do get them with the latin names, but saw this and remembered Lobelia was an herb...it was also trailing and I had just gotten a hanging basket from my sister so thought it might be a perfect fit.   I will have some pretty flowers anyway!  Wink

I use Lobelia a lot in my family when we have any type of cough or congestion -- and one morning I gave our daughter too much and about 5 min after I gave it to her she said "mama, my tummy hurts' and then she heaved once and threw up the oatmeal she had in her tummy! Then she felt better! An hour later I gave her some more, but an obvious smaller dosage.  Lobelia has been an absolutely AMAZING herb for my family, I can't beleive there aren't more posts about it! It helps in record time clear up the cough and phlem and congestion -- it has saved us many times!

Yes! I have found what works best is a small serving several times a day. I made my lobelia very strong in an alcohol tincture so my kids only get a tiny amount and it works great! I add prob 1/16 to 1/8 of a tsp in a tablespoon of grape juice and then chase it with more juice. We do this several times a day and has them better in no time! A lot of people use glycerin and you can do this too, you just have use a bit more and bc Lobelia is a pretty potent herb - the smaller the amount is easier for my kids! A small amount goes a long way. A lot of people use the glycerin bc it tastes better too and they don't want to give alcohol to little ones. Lobelia is the main herb where I don't mind if it's alcohol just bc so little is used. Even if you gave them 6-8 doses, they would have still only had a total of 1/2 or a maybe full tsp of alcohol all day - so it's a pretty small amount!

Thanks so much Rikkichic! Can you share what ratio you make your Lobelia? Do you do the jar half or 2/3 full of Lobelia, then top it off with Vodka/achohol? I have made tinctures and glycerites before. Tinctures with acohol are pretty easy, just wondered exactly how you do it, what amounts ect. Thanks again!

According to the "ABC Herbal" book it says you can use Lobelia and Cayenne to rub on your head for headaches.  Has anyone tried this?  How did it work out for you?  I am making my first tincture of Lobelia now and I intend to try it on my headaches.

After reading and researching some of Dr. Shultz -- I started making my tinctures stronger -- so I cram the jar almost full and then add the vodka --
shake it daily for 2 weeks and strain! So it is def potent! My dad has heart disease and I make him hawthorne-ginger tinctures and always make them just as potent. HE does that with Cayenne daily and has had awesome results! .....anyway that is off subject --- sorry healthybratt!!  Grin

Wow! That does sound potent! You mean "cram" as in pack the jar as hard as you can, or just fill it nice and full. Sorry Im trying to be too exact! Grin

If you try this post your results.   I'm definitely interested.   I have a jar of Lobelia tincture in my pantry.   Haven't used it yet.   I do remember that Dr. Schulz said that Lobelia works better when made with alcohol and vinegar.  I was watching his video on U-Tube

My herbal book said that lobelia pulls mucus.  So we've been having cedar fever around here (itchy eyes, sore throats, full ears, I've had headache and major sinus pressure).  Is lobelia going to work on this?  I am getting the impression reading this thread that it's more lung related?

Thank you,

I read the lung cleansing thread and tried to help my 15 month old son get rid of his excess mucus by giving him lobelia.  Basically, you use lobelia to make them throw up the gunk.  The lobelia tincture I have is a glycerin/acv tincture.  I don't know if it isn't strong enough, so I didn't give him enough or what, but he didn't throw up.  After several doses I gave up.  He did seem to feel better and over the next couple of days he gagged up mucus a few times, but it didn't work quite like I expected.  Any suggestions?

Lobelia has worked on all kinds of congestion for our family. It is also called 'the 'find and seek' herb because it seeks out wht is wrong in your body and helps heal it. I love Lobelia!

also -- born-an-okie, your tincture must not be strong enough. I make mine so strong that my kiddos have thrown up after one dose of a tsp! I was only supposed to give them 1/4 tsp and accidently gave them a full tsp, and WOW! Up came their breakfast within a minute of taking the Lobelia! So either up his dosages or don't worry about him throwing up, I'm sure the Lobelia being in his system has helped with the mucus. I have never purposely given the kids Lobelia to make them throw up, I just give it to them every few hours to help get over whatever sickness they have and it is one of my most used herbs.
hope this helps!

Thank you Rikki!!

So, I guess we'll go on ahead and use the lobelia, along with other things.  Dh did use it for cough last night, and I do believe it helped, so I think I'll take it before bed as will a couple of my kids.

Blessings,

I am so hesitant to use Lobelia because it cautions you against use if you have any kind of irregular heart conditions.   As a child I had heart murmmur and even now sometimes I have irregular beating.   Does anyone have any insight into this area?

I personally like lobelia but one has to be careful not to overdo it.  Lobelia is a general corrector of the whole system, it seeks out what needs fixing.  It has a highly diffusible nature and works best in conjunction with a more permanent stimulant like peppermint or cayenne.  I have seen it used for earaches, rubbed on a baby's chest for congestion, taken internally for sever congestion of the lungs and for asthma.  One can also soak an injured body part, such as a thumb smashed by a hammer, in the tincture for pain relief.  I am currently using it for a hurt ankle.  Also, a midwife I know uses it for childbirth to ease pains.  This is one of my favorite herbs  Smiley

I agree with root doc it does seem to be a good herb for various uses. I have read and known ppl to use it for asma. It is in the Natures Sunshine pills I take called ANTI-GAS FORMULA pills. I know that sounds like a fart killing pill which it is but it also helps the digestive tract in other ways. If my digestive system is acting up I take those pills even if I don't have gas. it has been a miracle for me and took a lot of pain away from me. I always wondered why lobelia was in a gas pill for digestion when I know it to be popular for respiratory issues but it would appear to be one of those multi purpose miracle herbs.

Has anyone used lobelia to stop cramping early in pregnancy?  I know it is contraindicated in some books, and others say to use it to prevent miscarriage.  I've read that on here, too.  But I'm just needing to here from someone who has actually used it.  ~ Jeanne Carol
