A couple to a few drops every once in a while should do the trick. Yes, too much Lobelia is a emetic. A little bit works the opposite: calms the stomach, like in cases of dry heaving (flu), etc. A VERY safe herb. Won't harm you or the kids, perfectly safe. You can give them it in juice.

Any one think I could make a massage lotion to bring to the hospital for DH to use to rub my back during contractions?
Wonderful! No, it's not dumb. I know of someone who did this and it helped, and smelled good too! There was beeswax and infused arnica oil  in it, along with some I.O. of calendula. Lobelia is a great pain reliever, works great as a partner with arnica too.

she's coughing a lot still.  I've given her everything I can think of and have been rubbing her neck when I apply the lobelia.    I thought she'd be much better by now, so I'm getting a bit discouraged.  I've given her things that have helped me tremendously when I was sick, but they're seeming to have little effect on her.  Very frustrating!
I have just the best recipe for natural, easy cough syrup that works every time, better even than the Elderberry syrup.
 Okay:

-one onion
-about 1 cup of raw honey
-pot with lid
*Dice up the onion, add to pan, pour honey over. Turn on LOW heat, cover, let it simmer for an hour. Your goal here is to draw the wonderful properties of the onion into the honey, not cook it to death. Strain off onion, store in fridge in a jar.

Use whenever needed...no more coughing all night! Gave this to dm who had pneumonia and she could finally sleep through the night.

Hope this helps and brings relief!

Thanks so much for the cough syrup recipe.  I will try it tomorrow as my two oldest are now coughing their heads off.  It seems to drag on forever.  I only have small onions, so maybe I should use two instead of one?

Sure, two would be fine. Just stronger, but sounds like you need at this point! Nothing really needs to be precise as far as proportions. Oh, poor kids. Coughing does tire you out. Sad

HTH, I would love to know how it works!

Lobelia is my new favorite herb.  My daughter had pleurisy a couple weeks ago and it not only helped her lungs it helped immensely with the pain.  Has anyone ever used it for intensive pain relief?  I'm having a tonsillectomy day after Christmas and I dread taking narcotics.

The Lobelia Tincture is GREAT for teething kids. When my little brother was having molars come in, we gave it to him all the time! Also, any kind of pain.  HTH, bettagurl3 Smiley

I have a question about the lobelia for tinctures.  Do you use the whole herb or the seeds or what.  Pacific Botanicals has the herb, the herb in seed stage and the seeds. The seeds are very expensive.  Dr. Schulze's formula calls for lobelia seed pods.  I am not sure what that is.  Any ideas?  Thanks, Tammy

I can't help you with the seed pod question, but I've always used the whole herb from bulkherbstore.com and it works great for us.

We used it in combo w/Mullein and we didn't put it in juice just under the tongue for quick absorbtion.  It's bitter but we chased it with juice to get rid of the taste.  I don't know how old your kids are but my dd that I used it on is 13 and I used approx. 7 drops.  I also had her breathing some essential oils that helped clear up the lungs and sinuses.

Tammy, I recall from his video saying that the strongest part (medicinally) of the plant was the seed pods.  The other parts are still useful, but he recommends the pods.

Thanks also to whoever recommended rubbing it on gums for teething.  I think it's helping my 7 month old.  Grin

There is a story on another thread about Dr. Christopher using Lobelia and peppermint tea to cure someone's asthma. According to the story, he dosed the patient with peppermint tea, a teaspoon of lobelia, waited ten minutes, another teaspoon of lobelia, another ten minutes, another teaspoon of lobelia. At this point, as the story goes, the patient began vomiting profusely and expelled tons of mucous. After it was all over, the patient was able to breathe and function normally again.

Has anybody actually tried this for asthma? I don't want to sound like a skeptic, but it's such a dramatic story... I guess I'd like to hear from a "real" person that this has actually worked for them.

There is a person in my life that could probably greatly benefit from the use of lobelia, but I hesitate to recommend it to them because (1) they've already tried lots of natural things that haven't worked, so they're a little burned out, and (2) I worry that somehow it will hurt them, and it will have been my idea.  Roll Eyes I know that vomiting isn't the end of the world, but what if he starts and can't stop or something?

Does anyone know if you rub enough lobelia into your skin, if it will still make you throw up?

The person I know has asthma... very bad. For years they've struggled with many respiratory problems, including blocked sinuses (polyps). Right now, they are coughing up green mucous (sorry, TMI!), and they think they have an infection settled in their lungs.

Conventional treatments have not helped. They've tried steroids, meds, had surgery to have the polyps removed... pretty much everything that doctors can offer.

Does anyone think lobelia could be helpful in this situation?

Jade--

I tend to believe the dramatic stories about lobelia--it IS a powerful herb, and the first one I'd reach for in treating asthma/anything respiratory.  We used it successfully w/ croup last winter, and we enjoy (I use that term loosely, as it tastes like dirt to us) it as a pain reliever, too.

I do think it would be helpful in this situation, personally, and the manner of taking a little at a time is pretty typical for using lobelia.  Have you searched this site for lobelia AND asthma?  It seems like I recall another success story...maybe it's on this thread.   Cheesy

I too agree, a little and add to it if need be, dd 9yo had croup last year and although I had no intention of giving her enough to cause vomiting I did and she did(in the night) but the next morning she showed no signs of croup and was 100% well, Lobilia is wonderful stuff.

My limited experience with Lobelia is that even as an infusion it is potent.
Not being quite as cautious as I should have I gave my ds about a half cup which came up about 10 minutes later. It did help some with the symptoms of wheezing. I did give him more later but only a teaspoon at a time. I was using the book "Practical Herbalism" as a guide for the first dose. I found, however, that I had to be more conservative than Fritchey with Lobelia.

I have given a teaspoon of lobelia every three to four hours to my asthmatic 9 yr.-old daughter and it really helps.  She's never thrown up but has told me once or twice that her stomach feels funny.  If I give it to her at the first sign of a cough I can often stop the asthma attack in its tracks (she has viral-induced asthma so the attacks are not short and severe, but last several days to weeks and make her miserable).  Yucky stuff, but worth its weight in gold!  It is the most effective herb I've found for asthma.

Okay. I recommended the lobelia to my friend. (biting nails anxiously) I know LOTS of other people take it and turn out fine... but I just have this horrible picture in my head of my poor friend with asthma trustingly taking the lobelia, throwing up wildly 'til they end up in the emergency room, and then telling the doctor, "You see, this crazy girl I know told me it was safe."  Roll Eyes

But after reading all of these reassuring posts, I'm thinking, how bad can it be just to try it? I mean, after all, my friend has tried SO many other things that are far more "dangerous" than lobelia.

I did try searching the site for lobelia and asthma and didn't stumble across the success story that you mentioned... but I might have missed it. I'm a little sleep-deprived these days, so it's very possible!  Roll Eyes

Thanks so much to everyone who replied. If my friend tries it, I'll be sure to post the results!  Smiley

I have to share my excitement with the discovery of this herb!!!!

After reading this entire thread (thank you, BTW) and doing some of my own research, hubby went out and got some for our sick 11 month old.  She had a cough we weren't too fond of and some nasty congestion which was making for sleepless nights for all of us.

Garlic and echinacea are mainstays in the house.  I had run out of garlic and have used echinacea to boost her immune system from the stress of teething and felt that we needed to try something new (just incase I was making her system immune) cuz what we usually do was not cutting it.

Within 24 hours, mucous was coming from everyplace possible..including her BMs.  I also rubbed it on her gums and she fell asleep one night in a matter of minutes after I applied it.

I have used it topically for a pinched nerve on the base of my neck.  It helped mr relax to the point of sleep in a matter of a few mins.  My dh has exerienced pain relief and great results in the front part of his sore shoulder/arm muscle (which was sore from cutting trres down for 16 hrs a day for 3 weeks straight at an ice storn).  He has me rub it on him when he gets home and before bed and is so thankful for this herb of the land Smiley

Lobelia has been a life saver for my 2 year old dd. She gets severe asthma when she gets a head cold. She used to have at least three night of being up ALL night with scary weezing and gasping everytime she caught a cold. I gave her lobelia tea as soon as her symptoms started the last two times she caught a cold. With both colds she had one night of mild asthma and that was it. She was able to sleep most of the night and only woke up a few times having trouble breathing. I would give her a little more tea and she would sleep for several hours breathing just fine. I am truly amazed at how well lobelia works for her. I intend to make a tincture so it is easier and faster to give to her.

We always have tincture on hand for my 9 yr. old daughter who has asthma.  It's easier to take than tea, in my opinion, since the flavor isn't all that great.  I just make it with glycerin and slow simmer it in the crockpot for about 3 hours.

My husband has been using an inhaler for the last 5 yrs. In very cold weather he had to use way more than his dosage called for & it just barely kept him breathing--it did not give relief. After hearing about Lobelia we decided to give it a try. I bought Lobelia tincture from iherbs.com. He puts several drops in a cup of tea & takes it that way. Almost from the first day he has had relief. He hasn't had to use his inhaler in months & he experiences true relief not just a stop-gap. We are so thrilled w/ this herb we reccommend it to everyone!

Yes - I bought the herb from bulkherbstore.com and a gallon of glycerin from azurestandard.com.  You can also find food-grade glycerin in smaller amounts at Whole Foods.

I put about 1/8 to 1/4 cup of lobelia dried herb in a pint-sized mason jar, then fill 60% of the jar with glycerin and 40% with filtered water, leaving about an inch at the top.  I take the ceramic pot out of my crockpot and just use the "shell" of the crockpot to simmer it (you could probably use a dutch oven on the stove just as easily, but my gas stove gets too hot).  I fill the crockpot about 2/3 of the way with water and stick a cloth on on the bottom so the glass doesn't break, put the lid on the jar, then simmer it for 3 hours or so, adding water to the crockpot as needed so it stays about 2/3 of the way up the jar.  Once it is done, I strain the liquid with cheescloth into a clean mason jar and let it cool.  I give my daughter a teaspoon every few hours when she has symptoms.

Hope that helps!

I think this is the medicinal one:  Lobelia inflata

 ---Other Species---
L. Dortmanna. This is indigenous toGreat Britain, and is rather similar in action to L. inflata. A tincture of the fresh plant cures headaches and noises in the ears.

L. Erinus. A tincture of the plant has been used in cancer and has produced absolute freedom from pain; is also used as a remedy in syphilis.

LOBELIA, BLUE (L. Syphilitica) and LOBELIA RED (L. Cardinalia). Both used in homeopathy. The first is diaphoretic, emetic and cathartic and has been used in dropsy, diarrhoea, syphilis and dysentery, the root being the part used. The Red Lobelia is said to be anthelmintic, nervine and antispasmodic.

L. Kalmit. Said to be used by the Indians in the cure of syphilis.

L. purpurascens. A tincture of the whole plant is used in paralysis of the lungs and tongue.

After reading and researching some of Dr. Shultz -- I started making my tinctures stronger -- so I cram the jar almost full and then add the vodka -- shake it daily for 2 weeks and strain! So it is def potent! ...
