I finally got to try lobelia. My 2 year old suddenly started with heavy congestion (no previous cold) and goop in the lungs, and runny nose. Barky sounding cough, and even coughing to the point of gagging at times. Im not sure if he has RSV, Croup, or Whooping cough, but I am treating it agressivly. I gave him about 6 drops of Herb Pharm Lobelia tincture. He is breathing easy and went to sleep now! What a powerful herb! I am glad to have it on hand, and it did not cost very much really. I should have had this years ago--it would have saved us some ER trips probably!! (I am also giving him Sambucol, Oregon Grape Root, and Herbal Respiratory)

Did you use a glycerine extract or does it have alcohol?  I have some Dr. Christopher's lobelia extract and have used it myself many times.  I've wanted to use it for the children, but didn't know if I could with the alcohol in it.

The amount of alcohol is insignificant, imo.  I have always used alcohol tinctures with no problem other than child making a bad face.   Tongue   If it makes you feel better, there's about the same amount of alcohol in a ripe banana as a children's tincture dose.

Thank you.   I've always been hesitant about the alcohol, but I'm glad to know it is so small really.  There are many herbs like lobelia I can't find in glycerine anyway, so now I feel better about using them.

If it helps, putting it in hot tea gets rid of about 50% of the alcohol (supposedly)...lobelia is so worth it, IMO.  Smiley

We've been using it w/ anything respiratory...w/ good success.

Lobelia is sensitive to heat, so the alcohol is the best way to extract it cuz you just shake it.  Glycerine is usually heated to extract.  I LOVE my lobelia.  Bescht schtuff! Smiley

Can someone help me with dosing for my one year old? I just bought a tincture (alcohol) today, and it says that 7 drops (not droppers)  is = to 1/4 ml. They suggest this dosage 3x daily.

I'm assuming this is adult dosage. How much would you give a croupy one year old to keep him off Pulmicort?  Cheesy Wink

Thanks, y'all!

I just gave mine about 3 drops in a baby sippy cup of OJ.  We just got over that!  I did this twice a day.  If you give them too much, they'll throw up.  You might can give more, but I was scared to.
Mine had this about 5 days.  I gave him lobelia, garlic, yogurt, and probiotics.

Poor little guy.  I hope he feels better soon. Cry

I got the herb pharm acohol/vinegar Lobelia tincture and gave my 2 year old son (30+ lbs) an average of 5-6 drops 1-2x daily, but I could have given him more. You will be able to tell if you give him too much, it will make him vomit, ect. My son had a tight congested cough, and he got over his cold very well. I used Herbs for kids, Oregon grape root and Mountain Meadow herbs Herbal Respiratory for 10 days, and Sambucol and Lobelia just a few days. It was nice, those things just dried his cold right up. Within 4-5 days you could hardly tell he had a cold at all. I do the antibiotic herbs, and Herbal Respiratory for 10 days to make sure it is completley gone.

Thanks Flo & Herbs Girl!

I'm starting Lobelia & Sambucol this evening, along w/ vitamin C. He doesn't feel bad, just has this come & go nasty cough and snotty nose. Allergy induced, just like the rest of our family.  Undecided  We're usually healthier in the winter when the pollen is all gone!

Enteresting thread ladies...
Question:
I bought Lobelia Essence (Nature's Sunshine liquid herbs, contains 44-47% alcohol) the other day at my local herb shop. The herbalist there said to rub it several times a day on my 2yo's feet to help him with his "touch of croup" the Dr said he had and she said for me to use it to, b/c I have sinus issues going on.... Does this product sound like the same thing as a tincture?? The directions say: Add to baths, relaxing poultices, or other external preparations.

I have had my sinus stuff almost completely clear up in 2 days (but I am taking other herbs for other issues too) so I am not sure it was the lobelia essence or not. My son still has a cough (2.5 days of treatment) but I am noticing improvement.

Sounds just like a tincture to me.
What are the other ingredients?   If it is only lobelia and alcohol, then it can be taken internally.  They cannot legally recommend it, most likely.  There is a LOT of controversy about using lobelia internally, so read up on it and decide for yourself.

Here are some sites with some information, for a start;

I use dried Lobelia. I have given my kids too much Lobelie twice and abotu a minute after taking the dosage they said "Mama, I don't feel good" - and then they immedietly threw up everything in their belly! It was a clean, easy throw up, and it was all up! Crazy! Both times I did this was right after I made my tinctre and it was stronger than my first batch. Strange how some of my batches turn out way stronger than another! So I just adjusted their doses and they are fine now. Sometimes they complain that it burns their throat, Lobelia kinda tingles. Not quite hot like Cayenne but it has a very distinct tingly burn in your throat if not taken with enough juice.
We love Lobelia and always use it for respritory problems or coughs. We used it successfully with whooping cough and it definately helped. When combined with Lobelia it is a great relaxant at night, especially if you are suffering with a non stop cough because it relaxes your bronchial muscles and stops the cough.
 We love it!

How much lobelia do you give your kids? My 11 yo right now has a cough and swollen glands very badly behind her left ear.  I've been giving her a lot of stuff today, but I forgot about the lobelia.  I have some of Dr. Christopher's in an alcohol base that I could use.  I gave her some of it back in Sept. when she had a cough and it didn't seem to help much.  I don't believe I gave her enough though as I was afraid to due to the vomiting side effect.  Smiley

Depends on how potent it is- any where for 1/4 to 1/2 a tsp is what I give my kids.

Oh, and lobelia is also used externally. Add it to a mixture of essential oils in a base of coconut or olive or jojoba and it works wonders. My naturopath doesn't ever recommend using internally and swears it works just as well externally! I use it both ways! Wink

I did actually rub some lobelia on her swollen glands last night and this morning.  I didn't mix it with anything, but probably should have.  Would it work better mixed with oil?

no I bet it would be fine alone, sometimes it can be sticky by itself, but it will still work!

The side of my dd's neck is still swollen, but not as bad as it was the other day.  She's coughing a lot still.  I've given her everything I can think of and have been rubbing her neck when I apply the lobelia.    I thought she'd be much better by now, so I'm getting a bit discouraged.  I've given her things that have helped me tremendously when I was sick, but they're seeming to have little effect on her.  Very frustrating!

You just never know what is going to work! When I first started natural it took a few sicknesses under our belt before we started seeing results. Every sickness they kick without using meds boost their immune systems that much more for next time.
If I was you, I would try and get as much superfood in her daily as possible, and do the Lobelia every couple of hours. You never know how strong herbs are that you buy from the store either, it is definately always best to buy from someone you know or make it yourself. I am NOT saying what you have won't work, I'm just saying it might not be as potent as what I use because I make my own. KWIM?
And how old is she? Continue massaging her lymph nodes, chest, back and under her arms as much as possile. I will quote from The ABC Herbal:
"The volatile oils penetrate right through the skin into the blood and lymph where they strengthen the body's ablity to fight infection and clean out the debris. .................we mix cajuput or tea tree oil, with lemon, lavender oil, clove oil, and myrrh oil in a base of olive.................."

Stay strong and be consistent!! You will get through it!

i bought the lobelia (1/4 lb.)  a couple weeks ago and haven't done anything yet.  kinda wishing i'd used 1/2 glycerin for the valerian root tincture, cuz it looks really gross!  so i also have glycerin now, should i put the lobelia in it?  is it better used internally or only externally?  i see you talking about rubbing it on.  when used on the outside does it still work for coughing, or breathing stuff?  i am totally new to this, so i hope these aren't silly questions.  thanks!

I personally prefer to use it internally, but when the kids are bad congested I will rub it on their backs, etc.  It penetrates the skin and goes into the bloodstream pretty fast. You can make 2 seperate tinctures, one glycerin adn one alchohol. The valerian is kinda yucky, but add to grape juice and it's no big deal! when made in alchohol you don't have to take as much as when you make it with glycerin. But if you are going to rub it on the skin, the tinctures work better than glycerins bc they aren't sticky.

Some people have said they used Lobelia during labor and delivery for pain relief... I had really bad back pain in labor with my first birth(actually through most of the last part of pg #1 and now #2 also). I got desperate the other night and rubbed the lobelia essence on my lower back while I was waiting forsome Tylenol to kick it and it really helped the pain and my muscles to relax.

Any one think I could make a massage lotion to bring to the hospital for DH to use to rub my back during contractions?

I am going to have a water birth, but will not be in the tub the whole time (this is the hospitals 1st experience with a tub, I am bringing my own tub) I am sure they will make me get out to be monitored sometimes and I will need a lotion for DH to use anyway.... might as well use some ting that helps with pain!

Any suggestions?? Also if it sounds like a dumb idea please tell me!! I know very little about all pf this.

how much lobelia for a 24lb 8 month old? Do i mix it in anything or can i give straight drops? In case of overdoing, is the vomiting harmful or just a side effect??

I believe vomiting is just a side effect of taking too much.  I'm not sure about the dosage for an 8 month old, I've given it to my 1yo, but I cannot remember how much.  I believe I only gave her a few drops to start with and watched to see if there was any side effects or improvement.

I have made both my kiddos throw up by giving them too much and it was just a quick, throw up everything in their bellies! NO big deal! Not that I suggest overdosing them, I'm just saying if you do then  yes, it has a 'built in' protector by making you throw up - so the vominting is acually protecting you from overdosing --- make sense?
