This diet is very simple.  Eat smaller portions.  No seconds.  No snacks.  No sugar (not including natural sugars, like fruits).  There you go.  On weekends you're allowed to have slightly larger portions, or a snack or two, or some sugar--don't go overboard.  I lost 26 pounds a few years back, doing basically this diet, except I didn't allow myself the weekend treats.  That way, you don't have to monitor calories or fat.  Both will be naturally reduced because you're eating less, overall.  The guy who promotes the diet says the weekend treats give your metabolism a boost.  I have no idea.  But I'm sure the plan would work, because I know it worked for me, doing almost the same thing.

I laughed out loud several times while reading the website! On a serious note, I had a huge "aha!" moment, realizing that no matter what kinds of foods I eat (low carb, all natural, whatever...), the reason I've not been able to lose is because I still eat too much!!!

Here's something I wrote about it elsewhere:

Over the years, I've learned enough about nutrition, diet, metabolism, insulin response, fitness, and exercise, that I could honestly write my own book! While it may sound as if I'm boasting, believe me: I'm NOT. All this knowledge has only done one thing for me: it's kept me overweight.

Even though I grind my own flour and bake our bread, right down to tortillas and pita; even though we eat mostly whole foods; even though margarine and/or vegetable oils haven't darkened the door of my home in years; even though I milk a  goat once a day so we can have fresh, raw milk (it really is yummy); and even though I lift weights three times a week...I still take up too much space.

So what's the deal? Well, all the time, focus and attention I have given to diet over the last 10+ years has turned me into a Obsessive, Compulsive Eater. I have become obsessed with food. Every edible thing is either good or evil. It's feast or famine. I'm either "doing good" or binging. You know the drill; I'm not the Lone Ranger, here.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I took my kids to see my grandmother. We were there around lunch time, and long story short: there was pizza. Immediately I started to go through the mental exercise: "do I eat now and just have salad for snack and dinner? No, then what will I do for protein? I could wait and eat when I get home, but it's been almost four hours since I ate, and I should've already eaten something by now..."

It was right then and there that I saw what I'd become. Are you kidding me??? I couldn't decide whether to be mad at myself for being such an idiot, or just laugh. In the end, I ate two small pieces of pizza and allowed myself no feelings about it one way or the other.

So I started to research (b/c that's just what I do), looking for something different, something that I could do long term. The first thing I came across that appealed to me was fasting one or two days a week, not all day, just from, say, one dinner to the next. It appealed to me because I was so sick of eating!!! I did it twice, several days apart, and I can't tell you how refreshing it was to simply not have to think about food.

It was during reading about the intermittent fasting that I stumbled across the No-S diet. I was first and foremost impressed that I wasn't required to cough up $39.95 to be let in on the secret. Then, when I read the ebook, I was floored.

I simply cannot believe that with over 10 years of research, and countless diets and exercise programs, it never occurred to me that the reason I'm overweight is that I EAT TOO MUCH!

It's like my house was flooding, and everyone is trying to tell me where water comes from, how the water got into the faucet, how the faucet works, how the water will damage the woodwork inside the house...but no one says, "turn off the water, moron."

---------------------------------------------------------

So here's what I'm doing: I follow No-s (even bought the coffee mug & fridge magnet) Tuesday through Sunday. The only thing I change is that if I'm not particularly hungry at breakfast, I wait till lunch to eat. So far I've only done it a few times.

What usually happens is that on Sunday, I overdo it. So on Monday, I pull out the Eat Stop Eat, and fast until dinner. It makes me feel so much better after a weekend of eating more of "what I want".

Things I've noticed:
  • I remember what it feels like to be actually hungry.
I don't look for food when I'm bored.
I now know when I'm full, and I'm able to simply stop.
I DON'T THINK ABOUT FOOD ALL DAY EVERY DAY ANYMORE!!
I can take my jeans off without unbuttoning them.
The scale is moving down for the first time in months (and I've been "dieting" the whole time with NO results).
Did I mention I'm not obsessed with food?

It's amazing how something so simple can be so completely life changing, but that's what it's been for me.

Last night, dh was bringing dinner home. He had to work late and I was SO hungry when he got here. He got us Chicken Sandwiches (the fried kind) and fries as a treat. It all fit on a plate, so I was good! Hungry as I was, I left a third of the sandwich and at least a third of the fries. That would've NEVER happened before. I would've been thinking "eat it all now b/c tomorrow you'll be restricted again".

I'm amazed at how I never knew what it was to feel full. I can now recognize the feeling and allow myself to be done.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience. Glad there's some more interest. I had thought about starting a thread, but you'll get some flack for this way of eating (also with Eat Stop Eat) because so many people actually believe you HAVE to eat LOTS and OFTEN.

Have a great S-day!

I found your post interesting with a lot of truth. I have a sil that struggled with her weight for years and then read a simple book about how we eat too much. Long story short, she started skipping lunch, ate a good breakfast and supper, lost all her weight and has never gained it back in 6 1/2 years including the time through 2 pregnancies . I don't think she skips lunch anymore but she literally had to retrain her mind. She said she would convince herself that she really needed that leftover pudding etc. in the fridge and actually didn't realize how much she was eating. For her it was a self control/spiritual issue. I'm not here to say that will be the case with everyone, i KNOW some people lose weight much easier than others, i just think as americans we obsess about food one way or another and the whole thing turns into a vicious cycle, kwim?

I just eat a plate of food! I don't obsess (or even think) about whether it's a small meal or a big meal. It's just a meal. I put what I want on my plate, eat till I'm full or till the plate is empty, whichever comes first. Then I'm done. Some days I eat three meals. Some days I eat only two, depending on if I'm hungry or not at breakfast. Weekends I'm more free. For example, as I'm writing this, I have a Starbucks Espresso Truffle sitting next to me.

The whole point was to get OFF the (should I eat three big meals or six small meals? Or maybe three small meals and a snack. Or maybe no snack...) roller coaster! To stop over thinking every bite and just eat at meal time. I'm relearning to listen to my body's cues. To understand what hungry feels like. And better yet, to realize that when I'm eating, and I instinctively have to take that deep breath...to know that means I'm FULL, not loosen the belt to make room for more!!

If you haven't already, the no-s website explains things way better than I can. If you're like me, it will be a huge "Aha!" moment.

I am doing it as well. I can get my wedding rings on for the first time in about two years! Cheesy

I agree that a big part of the point of the No S Diet is to quit overthinking. As for the question posted about thinking six small meals were better for you, I was told by my veterinarian (of all things) that that is very hard on your pancreas because it doesn't get the break between meals God designed it to get. I thought that was very interesting, and it helped me to slow down on the snacking knowing that.

Do you  mind letting us know how you're doing? As in, do you find it easy to follow? anything you're noticing? that kind of thing...

I hit the lowest weight I've seen since before I got preg with my 17 month old yesterday.

Just want to hear others' experiences.

Thanks! It's a wonderful feeling. I admit it's hard. I am used to snacking a LOT. -and I eat way too much sugar. Sometimes, I fail. But I keep trying and I am not going to give up. This is a common sense diet, it's just that sense isn't so common!  Cheesy I find that I am craving veggies and feeling nausiated at the very thought of sweets, which has NEVER happened in my entire life until now! (the nausea at the thought of sweets part - I've always been a veggie lover)

Congratulations on your new low, too!  Smiley

This makes a lot of sense.  I am wanting to do this as well.  Is there any exercise program that you are doing in conjunction - moderate or extreme?  I am still having a difficult time hammering a routine out that will alot me some time to exercise.  As it is I already have to get up before the sun to get some personal prayer/devotional time ya' know? Which "profiteth much" more than physical exercise but the sad sad sad tag size in my jeans begs to differ...

LOL! I do know exactly what you mean! The past couple of weeks, I've done no exercise at all. But even when I am exercising, I only do about 15 minutes of weights, three times a week, and intervals on my bike, or tabatas (google for more info). I don't do anything that takes me over about 15 min. at a time.

I am still losing, though. I haven't weighed this week, but I went shopping today, and the whole day, my jeans were slipping too far down on my hips! I consider this a good problem to have!

Are any of you guys still doing this? I'm sort of doing it again. I changed it a little becasue I prefer to have my sweets on Friday and Saturday. Kind of messes up the name of the diet though.

I'd love to hear results from you ladies that have been doing it a while.

This sounds alot like the weigh down diet....dont over eat ...eat smaller amts....and do not snack...I did that yrs ago and it worked great the first time...but since I have a whole food issue...sometimes quantity control and sugar are issues for me!
I am going to try this though and add exercise back into my life...Looking for others responses on how they are doing too....Beth in Idaho

I'd like to know too if any of y'all have lost weight doing this.  I've been sort of half-heartedly trying it, cheating a little ok, a lot, but feel my clothes getting a little looser.

I think you're right about it being sort of like Weigh Down.....its all about getting used to your tummy emptying out, which is a weird feeling of self-control when you're one that ran for a snack every 2 hours.   Undecided

Hypothetically, of course....I would never do something like that, myself....

The difference between this and the Weigh Down diet is that, with WD, nothing is off-limits.  You can eat any food, including sugar, whenever you're hungry.  The point of it is to recognize when you are truly hungry, eat whenever that is, and stop when you're satisfied.  That eliminates emotional eating, or any other reason for eating besides hunger.  You naturally eat less, so you lose weight.

No S Diet restricts eating to three meals a day (or if you're hypoglycemic, you eat however many times you're supposed to), but no more than that.  You eat one portion of food, no seconds.  No snacking.  And no sugar, except on the weekends and special holidays.  You lose weight for basically the same reason:  you're naturally eating less.  And limiting sweets is a big help.

Yes.  I lose weight when I follow the No S diet.  My problem is that if I do have sweets on the weekend/special day, I get to craving it and end up breaking the diet and gaining back what I've lost.  So, for me, I have to restrict sweets all the time, with few exceptions.  In theory, allowing yourself those treats on the weekend helps you stay in line on the weekdays, since you know you can have a little treat in a few days.  But if you have a problem with sweets, as I do, you may need to tweak the diet.

Hi, its_me518.  I think you and I are alike in some ways.  I too get excited about new diets, but don't do well because I eat too much.  In fact, I eat enough for two people.  For me it is an addiction.  I don't use that term lightly--it really is.  But I keep re-starting, and I know that one day I will make it, with God's help.

The one time I lost a significant amount of weight it was through a diet similar to this one.  Eating less=weight loss.  Duh, I know.  It's not even a "diet."  It's a change in attitude toward food and learning temperance.

Keep working at it.  Even if you have days where you eat too much, get right back with the program the next day, and don't give up.  Food is not the enemy.  Food is meant to be enjoyed.  I just enjoy it too much, kwim?  Roll Eyes

Well.... you know what my problem is??  Roll Eyes I don't even enjoy the food!  Shocked I am actually always worried that once the food is gone, there will be no more. Or if its dinner time, I'm not hungry, I eat anyways, cuz I worry that I will get hungry later on.  Shocked I don't know what thats all about. Thank God I have NEVER experienced not having food.. so I don't know why I'm always worried about there not being food. Its like I'm trying to store it up.. except I don't want to!
