Mamatoto,

First off, I have not had any children with these exact symptoms, so don't know if I can offer you any worthwhile advice... but, for what it may be worth:

First, did he get overly warm or sunburned during the afternoon?

Obviously, the strawberries/watermelon would not have had anything to do with the fever - but could, potentially, have helped his "dire-rear" along a tad. Certain fruits (grapes come to mind) caused all our kids to get serious diarrhea (very green, and burned their bums almost instantly!) until they were much older.

At his age, and with teeth coming in as quickly as they are, the fever and runs would not be "unusual", and with his seeming to feel better now, my guess is that:

1. This was from teething.  OR
2. He might have gotten a bit too warm/sun-exposed and his body was having difficulty regulating his temperature, which could cause a bit of a fever, as well as the runs. (At least, I have seen similar situations, and it seemed to correlate with too much sun and/or heat.)  OR
3. He picked up a little summer virus.  OR
4. He might have had a fairly mild case of salmonella or ecoli. (Can be exposed from sources other than just raw meats).

Addressing the possibility of blood in his stool: Typically, dark blood indicates a problem higher in the GI tract, red indicates "fresh" blood that hasn't been partially "digested" -- unless there were a complete hemorrhage, which would be an entirely different story.

Red streaks of blood in diarrhea could be considered somewhat common, pretty much just indicating some serious irritation in the lining of his bowels. This could be from a virus/bacteria... or could be from something he has eaten, or is eating.

Continued blood over several days, increased bleeding, paleness, lethargy, etc would be a concern – but a small amount of reddish blood, found in slimy diarrhea is not necessarily “surprising” or “alarming” to me – especially since he is acting pretty normally otherwise.

If this were one of mine, I would breastfeed a bit more over the next couple days, and feed less solid food (easier on the tummy); when feeding solid food, I would only very bland, mild foods.  Probiotics would be a good addition, considering the irritation in his bowels.

Another thought I had...  Though I have seen it mentioned several times here on WTM, I am not familiar with the Maker's diet... so I may be way off base (??) but I, personally, would be somewhat concerned about feeding mostly fruits/whole grains to a little one of only 12 months.

I am guessing this WOE is a type of rotation, where you eat certain foods during certain times of year – when they are “naturally” available?  Again, I am not familiar with this, but if my assumption is correct, while it might work for many adults, this might not be the best way to feed a little one of 12 months, as most wee toddlers do not yet have molars for grinding grains -- that would seem to me that their bodies are not yet ready to process grain products – does that make sense?

Anyway, that is maybe neither here nor there, but if this wasn't just from teething or from a “bug”, he might have several things going on; the diarrhea could be from eating something that is beginning to cause a reaction or irritation to his digestive tract.  It can sometimes take a few weeks/month to develop allergies or sensitivities... ?
Just some thoughts anyway ~

Thanks for the info, RunAmokFarm!  Glad to know a little blood isn't necessarily alarming.  (Can you tell I'm a first time mom? Smiley)  He still has it today, but I'm trying to do as you suggested and for the next few days nurse as much as possible/feed him as little food as possible to give his digestive system a break.  I'm also trying to eat a bland diet myself so nothing aggravating can enter the milk.

Just to clear up my confusing post - the Maker's Diet is basically a no-sugar, no-processed foods, high saturated fats, eating food in as close to it's natural state as possible, high lacto-fermented foods/beverages eating plan (basically Nourishing Traditions minus the pork and shellfish).  The reason I'm eating mostly fruit and grains is because with the weather so hot right now and being constantly on the move, fresh fruit and bakery-bought whole grain sourdough bread are the easiest.  We are eating some veggies, meat, and dairy.  But they tend to require a bit more prep/cooking which I'm trying to avoid right now, so they're not as big a part of my diet right now as normal.  Never really thought about what would be easiest for DS to digest Shocked I'll definitely give it some more thought!

Mamatoto,

How is your little guy feeling this evening?  Is he acting "normal", with typical energy and play?  Any more fever?  Is he still having frequent, slimy bowel movements, or is that clearing up?  Still a bit of blood in his stool, or no?

I am glad you were more clear on the Maker's Diet (I really should have taken the time to research it, but my computer is struggling as it is, so have to be quick when I am on here - LOL)

Anyway, hoping he is back to normal - but if not, then soon!   Smiley

Mamatoto,How is your little guy feeling this evening?

The fever seems to be completely gone.  He was really fussy on and off throughout the day, but other than that seemed full of energy.  It seems like the gums where his last canine tooth would be are pretty hard, so I'm thinking he's teething and that might be the fussiness.  Unfortunately I'm out of teething tablets Sad  As far as the slimy bloody stool, at the beginning of the day it seemed to be the same as yesterday - bright red and very often, but he had one slimy mostly brown stool in the afternoon, and after that no bowel movements at all.  So it seems like things are clearing up - at least hoping so.  I guess tomorrow will tell.  I think his bum is hurting, though, because whenever I blot it with the wipe (not rubbing, just blotting) it feels really hot and I can tell he's really uncomfortable.  I'm going to try and glob some Eden salve on it regularly tomorrow and see if that doesn't help.

Well, that night I gave him half a clove of garlic minced in a spoonful of honey and thought the burn wouldn't be so bad since he just had some pizza.  But he had some horrible heartburn and after two glasses of water, a slice of bread and dry hurls in the bathroom, the burn stopped and he said his headache was gone.  I kept giving him tincture of elderberry flower, peppermint and yarrow and the fever stayed mild until the next day and today he seems fine, maybe a little tired.

My youngest (1.5 years old) started low grade fever and sleepiness yesterday and I gave him garlic soft gels and the same tincture.  Seemed fine all day and now has a 102.2 fever and is very tired.

What ever it is seems to only be a fever but I hate not knowing what kind of bug it is.  No other symptoms to go on.

My five year old son has problems hearing me lately. It all started when he got a cold, probably four or five months ago. During the cold, he drove me NUTS asking, "What? What? What did you say?" over and over again. I was a wee bit concerned until I got the same cold and MY hearing got messed up for a few days while the head cold did its thing. But it was totally temporary. It may have come back off and on for a couple of weeks, I'm not sure. But once the congestion was completely gone, so was the hearing problem.

But not for my son. He keeps going through phases of better and worse. There are days that I barely notice him having problems at all, and then other days, it is downright maddening because I can't say ANYTHING without him asking, "What did you say?" Today, I wasn't even saying anything, and he'd turn around and ask, "What?"

I was starting to get really concerned that he has permanent hearing damage, but then the other day he said, "Oh! I could hear better, but then I sneezed and now it's closed again." Like it's something that DOES get better and worse.

He has no problems pronouncing any sounds, and he speaks perfectly fine. He hasn't had an ear infection in a long time, and he's never been on any prescription meds, antibiotics, etc. He is partially vaccinated, but it's been years since his last shot. He never complains about his ears hurting.

Today was terribly frustrating; he just couldn't seem to hear me at all. I don't know if it matters, but he's been swimming a lot lately, and it seems like it's been really bad lately, too. I can't decide if the two are connected or not.

I'm pretty much resigned to taking him to the doctor, but we don't have insurance and it'll probably be at least a month before we can go. Does anybody have any ideas about what's going on?

I went through a period of about 2 months when I couldn't hear well at all - occasionally it would clear up, then sneezing or blowing my nose or laying on my side or something else really small would clog it up for a while again.  Every time I showered I would try and blast water into it, and FINALLY I pulled out a huge disgusting chunk of wax.  Things have been great ever since.  So I would guess it might be as simple as plugged with wax.  The swimming might be affecting the ears normal "flushing" process.  Whatever you do, don't let a Q-tip near any part of the non-outer ear, as it is really easy to accidentally push wax further in when trying to get it out - at least that's what happened with me.  I've never tried to clean out someone else's ear before but I'm sure if you don't know how to do it you could probably find a thread somewhere on here with tips.  Hoping it's as simple as that!!

I second the ear wax.  My son had the same issue and we used peroxide and warm water for over an hour of flushing before the wax finally started coming out.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm pretty stressed right now trying to figure out what's going on with my dd who's almost four. She has had quite a few digestive problems from the time she was born. We're pretty sure she has reflux, though it hasn't been confirmed. When she would finished nursing, she would shoot milk out her mouth and nose pretty regularly. I started supplementing with formula and she finally seemed to "grow" out of it. There was also an issue of really yucky smelling stools. The doctor and I discussed the possibility that she was having malabsorption problems. We never officially did anything to deal with it. As she got a little older, she would go from being constipated and having such hard stools that she ended up with hemorrhoids to very loose light-colored stools (sorry for the not so pretty details). She regularly complains of her belly hurting halfway through a meal and will tell me she feels like she's going to"frew up." She also tells me that it feels like there's something stuck in her throat.
Well, there's more for anyone who's still reading! Undecided From the time she was just a few months old she has been at about 0% for her height and weight. Our doctor was going to put her on the "failure to thrive" list but because she seemed to be eating well and pretty healthy we just ruled it out as the possibility that she's just tiny. Her daddy is very slender. Okay, he's just plain skinny. But he's also really tall. There's a lot of shortness on my side of the family, so we came to the "tiny" conclusion.
However, now all these other things are going on and she itches all the time and complains of hurting all the time. She has scratched her head so much that she now has two sores that bleed. She's also very emotional and quick to "fall apart" and has trouble recovering. I thought maybe this was a "to get my way" thing but with all the other issues she's got going on, I don't know.
I said all this to say, my midwife has told me to take her off gluten and dairy for 30 days and to keep a log of everything she eats. My midwife, who is gluten and dairy intolerant, thinks we may be dealing with gluten or dairy problems or worse yet, celiac disease.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I've looked at some threads and may have missed it somewhere but taking care of four little ones limits how many threads I can look at. Smiley
I trust my midwife and believe she is probably right, but I would also like to hear if anyone in WTM land has experienced the same with a child. Thanks so much for reading this way too long post!

Amanda,

Your dd has severe food allergies and poor digestion.  If you can, read through the GAPS thread where I detailed my son's struggles with this and how we went about diagnosing it and treating it.  If you need help, PM me.  I will try and get the GAPS info in one place for easier reading soon.   I have it from someone who went to the work of putting it all together for me.  I just need to post it.  In the meantime, hit the GAPS thread.  I do not believe GAPS is what your dd needs, but you will glean lots of info to start with.

god bless,

patti

p.s.  absolutely pull gluten and dairy for good right now until you can test and gather more info.  it is a start.

Thanks for the info patti. My midwife told me to stop all gluten and dairy as well, so we're working on eating pretty much meats, veggies, and fruit. This is all so new and overwhelming right now! We just met with the midwife Saturday about the itching and sores on dd's head, then it progressed to this whole food allergy problem. I didn't realize that gluten and dairy are in so many foods! I'll check out the info you gave. Thanks again so much!

Amanda,
I helped a friend of mine research gluten free cooking & grains.  Rice and corn are gluten free, and there are some good great threads on here for gluten free recipes.  HTH!

I strongly second Patti's suggestion for reading through the GAPS thread.  Her story is so fascinating, and taught me tons about how digestion works and how it can go wrong.

Thanks Gwen! We went grocery shopping today and got lots of vegetables, meat, fruit, rice, beans, etc. We even had a good chicken and vegetable stir fry for supper. I'm thinking this isn't going to be too hard to deal with now. At least the whole family will have to eat healthier now as well! I'm still checking out all the info. Thanks again.  Smiley

This sounds like text-book Celiacs disease. To get an accurate diagnosis do NOT take her off gluten. They can do a blood test, but she needs to be eating gluten.

My DD would get them at that age when her blood sugar got low and she needed to eat (even if she didn't feel hungry).  Generally children don't get headaches, but they can and that doesn't mean anything out of the ordinary is wrong with them.  Could be she needed to eat, got hit in the head, jarred her body somehow that caused it, has clogged sinuses from a weather change from where you live to where you are now, etc. etc. etc.  It could be any number of things.  As long as it doesn't persist, I wouldn't worry about it.  If it persisted day in and day out then you might get it checked.

My almost 5 year old daughter complains about her head hurting every now and then- a few times it has been blood sugar related, but she will also point to the center of her forehead right above her nose when she is congested- I'm guessing sinus pain? Don't know if that is normal either.

Ok I think I may have already posted something but I just need some more ideas for my tired brain. My baby (10 weeks old) has been congested for over a week now. It's not chest congestion and she isn't sick. She has deep sinus congestion so it makes it hard to clear out. It drains to the back and she chokes and coughs. I spray saline spray and hold her face down for a bit and then try to suck out what I can. she's miserable- nights are miserable-nursings hard- mommas wore out. Do babies get seasonal allergies? Is it what I am eating? What could it be?

My nursing baby (although she's 1 yr. now) does this SAME THING (mucous that can't be sucked out but goes straight down her throat, often choking her) when I eat peanut butter and/or peanuts. Sometimes there is so much mucous that she throws up. HTH.

KN,

Baby is allergic to something.  Dairy tends to be the biggest mucous offender.  I'd start removing it and see if the stuffiness goes away.

I took her and had her adjusted, and she stopped spitting up!  So it's definitely worth a shot!

I have a little boy, almost 18 months old, who has the chicken pox.  The chicken pox isn't what I'm wondering about though.  He has had the pox for about 1 1/2 weeks but the last three days I've noticed that his scrotum is red.  It doesn't seem to bother him too much except that last night in the bath he was pushing up on it.  I'm not sure that it is related to the pox or not.
I've been googling it and have found some vague info.  There is something they call red scrotum syndrome but that is about all I know.  Does anyone know anything about something like this or what I could try?  I have found entries in my searches by men who say most anything they put on it does not help and some things make it worst(it is a sensitive area Roll Eyes)
I have thought of trying ACV in the tub tonight.  Also thought of trying coconut oil topically.  Apprehensive about trying GOOT because of the area.
I appreciate any responses.  Susan

My little 16mo daughter was born w partially closed tear ducts, they have mostly opened but when she gets stuffy sometimes they leak tears.  The last 3 days she has been intermittently oozing white and yellow puss... It does not look like pink eye, her eye is clear in color but is very goopey. She seems otherwise happy. I am considering calling the Dr. today but I hate taking them (twins) there because they always end up with something worse a few days later. I gave her garlic ear drops on the same side as the oozing eye thinking that its all connected. I am eagerly awaiting some momma wisdom!! Thanks!

Hi~ I'm just looking for a little direction on where to begin with my son.

2 1/2 yr old DS:
-has an eczema-like, red, raised rash behind his knees and a patch on the back of his thigh. The ones behind his knees have been there since he was about 18 mo - they flare up now and then and itch and he says they hurt.

-occasional "tummy sick", as he says... which I'm not sure about... I think it could be a made-up thing, since it doesn't affect his activity at all, except an occasional laying on the couch for a minute and he's up and off again.

-nighttime wetting, after being trained and dry for about 2 months. I asked about this on another thread, and kind of attributed it to just a growth thing. But now he can't stay dry even for his 2 1/2 hr nap.

Ok, I think that's about it for unexplained symptoms... I'm wondering about a food allergy... But to what? Or is it something else, or all thing unrelated to each other?
